The human auditory system is comprised of specialized but interacting anatomic and functional pathways encoding object, spatial, and temporal information. We review how learning-induced plasticity manifests along these pathways and to what extent there are common mechanisms subserving such plasticity. A first series of experiments establishes a temporal hierarchy along which sounds of objects are discriminated along basic to fine-grained categorical boundaries and learned representations. A widespread network of temporal and (pre)frontal brain regions contributes to object discrimination via recursive processing. Learning-induced plasticity typically manifested as repetition suppression within a common set of brain regions. A second series considered how the temporal sequence of sound sources is represented. We show that lateralized responsiveness during the initial encoding phase of pairs of auditory spatial stimuli is critical for their accurate ordered perception. Finally, we consider how spatial representations are formed and modified through training-induced learning. A population-based model of spatial processing is supported wherein temporal and parietal structures interact in the encoding of relative and absolute spatial information over the initial ∼300ms post-stimulus onset. Collectively, these data provide insights into the functional organization of human audition and open directions for new developments in targeted diagnostic and neurorehabilitation strategies.

QUESTION UNDER STUDY: To assess which high-risk acute coronary syndrome (ACS) patient characteristics played a role in prioritising access to intensive care unit (ICU), and whether introducing clinical practice guidelines (CPG) explicitly stating ICU admission criteria altered this practice. PATIENTS AND METHODS: All consecutive patients with ACS admitted to our medical emergency centre over 3 months before and after CPG implementation were prospectively assessed. The impact of demographic and clinical characteristics (age, gender, cardiovascular risk factors, and clinical parameters upon admission) on ICU hospitalisation of high-risk patients (defined as retrosternal pain of prolonged duration with ECG changes and/or positive troponin blood level) was studied by logistic regression. RESULTS: Before and after CPG implementation, 328 and 364 patients, respectively, were assessed for suspicion of ACS. Before CPG implementation, 36 of the 81 high-risk patients (44.4%) were admitted to ICU. After CPG implementation, 35 of the 90 high-risk patients (38.9%) were admitted to ICU. Male patients were more frequently admitted to ICU before CPG implementation (OR=7.45, 95% CI 2.10-26.44), but not after (OR=0.73, 95% CI 0.20-2.66). Age played a significant role in both periods (OR=1.57, 95% CI 1.24-1.99), both young and advanced ages significantly reducing ICU admission, but to a lesser extent after CPG implementation. CONCLUSION: Prioritisation of access to ICU for high-risk ACS patients was age-dependent, but focused on the cardiovascular risk factor profile. CPG implementation explicitly stating ICU admission criteria decreased discrimination against women, but other factors are likely to play a role in bed allocation.

Dissecting drivers of plant defence investment remains central for understanding the assemblage of communities across different habitats. There is increasing evidence that direct defence strategies against herbivores, including secondary metabolites production, differ along ecological gradients in response to variation in biotic and abiotic conditions. In contrast, intraspecific variation in indirect defences remains unexplored. Here, we investigated variation in herbivory rate, resistance to herbivores, and indirect defences in ant-attracting Vicia species along the elevation gradient of the Alps. Specifically, we compared volatile organic compounds (VOCs) and ant attraction in high and low elevation ecotypes. Consistent with adaptation to the lower herbivory conditions that we detected at higher elevations in the field, high elevation plants were visited by fewer ants and were more susceptible to herbivore attack. In parallel, constitutive volatile organic compound production and subsequent ant attraction were lower in the high elevation ecotypes. We observed an elevation-driven trade-off between constitutive and inducible production of VOCs and ant attraction along the environmental cline. At higher elevations, inducible defences increased, while constitutive defence decreased, suggesting that the high elevation ecotypes compensate for lower indirect constitutive defences only after herbivore attack. Synthesis. Overall, direct and indirect defences of plants vary along elevation gradients. Our findings show that plant allocation to defences are subject to trade-offs depending on local conditions, and point to a feedback mechanism linking local herbivore pressure, predator abundance and the defence investment of plants.

Plants are notoriously variable in gender, ranging in sex allocation from purely male through hermaphrodite to purely female. This variation can have both a genetic and an adaptive plastic component. In gynodioecious species, where females co-occur with hermaphrodites, hermaphrodites tend to shift their allocation towards greater maleness when growing under low-resource conditions, either as a result of hermaphrodites shifting away from an expensive female function, or because of enhanced siring advantages in the presence of females. Similarly, in the androdioecious plant Mercurialis annua, where hermaphrodites co-exist with males, hermaphrodites also tend to enhance their relative male allocation under low-resource conditions. Here, we ask whether this response differs between hermaphrodites that have been evolving in the presence of males, in a situation analogous to that supposed for gynodioecious populations, vs. those that have been evolving in their absence. We grew hermaphrodites of M. annua from populations in which males were either present or absent under different levels of nutrient availability and compared their reaction norms. We found that, overall, hermaphrodites from populations with males tended to be more female than those from populations lacking males. Importantly, hermaphrodites' investment in pollen and seed production was more plastic when they came from populations with males than without them, reducing their pollen production at low resource availability and increasing their seed production at high resource availability. These results are consistent with the hypothesis that plasticity in sex allocation is enhanced in hermaphrodites that have likely been exposed to variation in mating opportunities due to fluctuations in the frequency of co-occurring males.

SOUND OBJECTS IN TIME, SPACE AND ACTIONThe term "sound object" describes an auditory experience that is associated with an acoustic event produced by a sound source. At cortical level, sound objects are represented by temporo-spatial activity patterns within distributed neural networks. This investigation concerns temporal, spatial and action aspects as assessed in normal subjects using electrical imaging or measurement of motor activity induced by transcranial magnetic stimulation (TMS).Hearing the same sound again has been shown to facilitate behavioral responses (repetition priming) and to modulate neural activity (repetition suppression). In natural settings the same source is often heard again and again, with variations in spectro-temporal and spatial characteristics. I have investigated how such repeats influence response times in a living vs. non-living categorization task and the associated spatio-temporal patterns of brain activity in humans. Dynamic analysis of distributed source estimations revealed differential sound object representations within the auditory cortex as a function of the temporal history of exposure to these objects. Often heard sounds are coded by a modulation in a bilateral network. Recently heard sounds, independently of the number of previous exposures, are coded by a modulation of a left-sided network.With sound objects which carry spatial information, I have investigated how spatial aspects of the repeats influence neural representations. Dynamics analyses of distributed source estimations revealed an ultra rapid discrimination of sound objects which are characterized by spatial cues. This discrimination involved two temporo-spatially distinct cortical representations, one associated with position-independent and the other with position-linked representations within the auditory ventral/what stream.Action-related sounds were shown to increase the excitability of motoneurons within the primary motor cortex, possibly via an input from the mirror neuron system. The role of motor representations remains unclear. I have investigated repetition priming-induced plasticity of the motor representations of action sounds with the measurement of motor activity induced by TMS pulses applied on the hand motor cortex. TMS delivered to the hand area within the primary motor cortex yielded larger magnetic evoked potentials (MEPs) while the subject was listening to sounds associated with manual than non- manual actions. Repetition suppression was observed at motoneuron level, since during a repeated exposure to the same manual action sound the MEPs were smaller. I discuss these results in terms of specialized neural network involved in sound processing, which is characterized by repetition-induced plasticity.Thus, neural networks which underlie sound object representations are characterized by modulations which keep track of the temporal and spatial history of the sound and, in case of action related sounds, also of the way in which the sound is produced.LES OBJETS SONORES AU TRAVERS DU TEMPS, DE L'ESPACE ET DES ACTIONSLe terme "objet sonore" décrit une expérience auditive associée avec un événement acoustique produit par une source sonore. Au niveau cortical, les objets sonores sont représentés par des patterns d'activités dans des réseaux neuronaux distribués. Ce travail traite les aspects temporels, spatiaux et liés aux actions, évalués à l'aide de l'imagerie électrique ou par des mesures de l'activité motrice induite par stimulation magnétique trans-crânienne (SMT) chez des sujets sains. Entendre le même son de façon répétitive facilite la réponse comportementale (amorçage de répétition) et module l'activité neuronale (suppression liée à la répétition). Dans un cadre naturel, la même source est souvent entendue plusieurs fois, avec des variations spectro-temporelles et de ses caractéristiques spatiales. J'ai étudié la façon dont ces répétitions influencent le temps de réponse lors d'une tâche de catégorisation vivant vs. non-vivant, et les patterns d'activité cérébrale qui lui sont associés. Des analyses dynamiques d'estimations de sources ont révélé des représentations différenciées des objets sonores au niveau du cortex auditif en fonction de l'historique d'exposition à ces objets. Les sons souvent entendus sont codés par des modulations d'un réseau bilatéral. Les sons récemment entendus sont codé par des modulations d'un réseau du côté gauche, indépendamment du nombre d'expositions. Avec des objets sonores véhiculant de l'information spatiale, j'ai étudié la façon dont les aspects spatiaux des sons répétés influencent les représentations neuronales. Des analyses dynamiques d'estimations de sources ont révélé une discrimination ultra rapide des objets sonores caractérisés par des indices spatiaux. Cette discrimination implique deux représentations corticales temporellement et spatialement distinctes, l'une associée à des représentations indépendantes de la position et l'autre à des représentations liées à la position. Ces représentations sont localisées dans la voie auditive ventrale du "quoi".Des sons d'actions augmentent l'excitabilité des motoneurones dans le cortex moteur primaire, possiblement par une afférence du system des neurones miroir. Le rôle des représentations motrices des sons d'actions reste peu clair. J'ai étudié la plasticité des représentations motrices induites par l'amorçage de répétition à l'aide de mesures de potentiels moteurs évoqués (PMEs) induits par des pulsations de SMT sur le cortex moteur de la main. La SMT appliquée sur le cortex moteur primaire de la main produit de plus grands PMEs alors que les sujets écoutent des sons associée à des actions manuelles en comparaison avec des sons d'actions non manuelles. Une suppression liée à la répétition a été observée au niveau des motoneurones, étant donné que lors de l'exposition répétée au son de la même action manuelle les PMEs étaient plus petits. Ces résultats sont discuté en termes de réseaux neuronaux spécialisés impliqués dans le traitement des sons et caractérisés par de la plasticité induite par la répétition. Ainsi, les réseaux neuronaux qui sous-tendent les représentations des objets sonores sont caractérisés par des modulations qui gardent une trace de l'histoire temporelle et spatiale du son ainsi que de la manière dont le son a été produit, en cas de sons d'actions.

Sex allocation data in eusocial Hymenoptera (ants, bees and wasps) provide an excellent opportunity to assess the effectiveness of kin selection, because queens and workers differ in their relatedness to females and males. The first studies on sex allocation in eusocial Hymenoptera compared population sex investment ratios across species. Female-biased investment in monogyne (= with single-queen colonies) populations of ants suggested that workers manipulate sex allocation according to their higher relatedness to females than males (relatedness asymmetry). However, several factors may confound these comparisons across species. First, variation in relatedness asymmetry is typically associated with major changes in breeding system and life history that may also affect sex allocation. Secondly, the relative cost of females and males is difficult to estimate across sexually dimorphic taxa, such as ants. Thirdly, each species in the comparison may not represent an independent data point, because of phylogenetic relationships among species. Recently, stronger evidence that workers control sex allocation has been provided by intraspecific studies of sex ratio variation across colonies. In several species of eusocial Hymenoptera, colonies with high relatedness asymmetry produced mostly females, in contrast to colonies with low relatedness asymmetry which produced mostly males. Additional signs of worker control were found by investigating proximate mechanisms of sex ratio manipulation in ants and wasps. However, worker control is not always effective, and further manipulative experiments will be needed to disentangle the multiple evolutionary factors and processes affecting sex allocation in eusocial Hymenoptera.

This report is a Value for Money (VFM) evaluation, conducted by the National Hospitals Office (NHO) of the Health Service Executive (HSE) on the allocation and utilisation of funding for expenditure in the Southern Hospitals Group (SHG) in 2006. The SHG consists of nine hospitals in the HSE South region. The 2006 expenditure for the SHG covered by the evaluation was 590.1 million. Performance trends were studied over the period 2004 to 2006. In androdioecious metapopulations, where males co-occur with hermaphrodites, the absence of males from certain populations or regions may be explained by locally high selfing rates, high hermaphrodite outcross siring success (e.g. due to high pollen production by hermaphrodites), or to stochastic processes (e.g. the failure of males to invade populations or regions following colonization or range expansion by hermaphrodites). In the Iberian Peninsula and Morocco, the presence of males with hermaphrodites in the wind-pollinated androdioecious plant Mercurialis annua (Euphorbiaceae) varies both among populations within relatively small regions and among regions, with some regions lacking males from all populations. The species is known to have expanded its range into the Iberian Peninsula from a southern refugium. To account for variation in male presence in M. annua, we test the following hypotheses: (1) that males are absent in areas where plant densities are lower, because selfing rates should be correspondingly higher; (2) that males are absent in areas where hermaphrodites produce more pollen; and (3) that males are absent in areas where there is an elevated proportion of populations in which plant density and hermaphrodite pollen production disfavour their invasion. We found support for predictions two and three in Morocco (the putative Pleistocene refugium for M. annua) but no support for any hypothesis in Iberia (the expanded range). Our results are partially consistent with a hypothesis of sex-allocation equilibrium for populations in Morocco; in Iberia, the absence of males from large geographical regions is more consistent with a model of sex-ratio evolution in a metapopulation with recurrent population turnover. Our study points to the role of both frequency-dependent selection and contingencies imposed by colonization during range expansions and in metapopulations.

The allocation of additional teaching resources to schools under the terms of the General Allocation Model (GAM) was intended to make possible the development of inclusive primary schools; ensure that primary schools have a means of providing additional teaching support to pupils with learning difficulties and special educational needs arising from high incidence disabilities without recourse to making applications on behalf of individual pupils and included additional teaching time that was previously allocated for learning-support teaching as well as an allocation of additional teaching time for what was termed resource teaching for pupils with special educational needs arising from high incidence disabilities.

(Résumé de l'ouvrage) Die Verteilung knapper menschlicher Organe wirft schwierige Fragen der Verteilungsgerechtigkeit und der Organisation auf. Rein medizinische Aussagen etwa über die Überlebenschance eines Organs in einem bestimmten Empfänger sind vorausgesetzt, bestimmen aber nie allein die Entscheidung. Effizienzüberlegungen sprechen zwar häufig für die primäre Berücksichtigung des Empfängers mit der grössten Lebenserwartung. Schon der Einbezug qualitativer Kriterien für die Überlebensphase kompliziert die Materie, erst recht aber die Berücksichtigung auch der Wartezeit als Element der Gleichbehandlung, der Dringlichkeit für den Empfänger oder gar von Marktkriterien. Auch die Frage einer Priorität für den seinerseits Spendewilligen wird kontrovers diskutiert. Und selbst dann, wenn man sich über die Gewichtung der unterschiedlichen Kriterien von Verteilungsgerechtigkeit einig wäre, bliebe immer noch die optimale organisatorische Durchsetzung dieser Entscheidung zu klären: soll man zum Beispiel mit regionalen, nationalen oder übernationalen Pools arbeiten? Die zweite Tagung im Tagungszyklus zu Grundsatzfragen der Transplantationsmedizin erörterte Themen rund um die Allokationproblematik bei Organen. Referenten aus verschiedenen Ländern, Sprachregionen und Disziplinen sprachen über medizinische, ethische, juristische, aber auch ökonomische Aspekte der Verteilung von Organen.
