La mémoire n’est pas un processus unitaire et est souvent divisée en deux catégories majeures: la mémoire déclarative (pour les faits) et procédurale (pour les habitudes et habiletés motrices). Pour perdurer, une trace mnésique doit passer par la consolidation, un processus par lequel elle devient plus robuste et moins susceptible à l’interférence. Le sommeil est connu comme jouant un rôle clé pour permettre le processus de consolidation, particulièrement pour la mémoire déclarative. Depuis plusieurs années cependant, son rôle est aussi reconnu pour la mémoire procédurale. Il est par contre intéressant de noter que ce ne sont pas tous les types de mémoire procédurale qui requiert le sommeil afin d’être consolidée. Entre autres, le sommeil semble nécessaire pour consolider un apprentissage de séquences motrices (s’apparentant à l’apprentissage du piano), mais pas un apprentissage d’adaptation visuomotrice (tel qu’apprendre à rouler à bicyclette). Parallèlement, l’apprentissage à long terme de ces deux types d’habiletés semble également sous-tendu par des circuits neuronaux distincts; c’est-à-dire un réseau cortico-striatal et cortico-cérébelleux respectivement. Toutefois, l’implication de ces réseaux dans le processus de consolidation comme tel demeure incertain. Le but de cette thèse est donc de mieux comprendre le rôle du sommeil, en contrôlant pour le simple passage du temps, dans la consolidation de ces deux types d’apprentissage, à l’aide de l’imagerie par résonnance magnétique fonctionnelle et d’analyses de connectivité cérébrale. Nos résultats comportementaux supportent l’idée que seul l’apprentissage séquentiel requiert le sommeil pour déclencher le processus de consolidation. Nous suggérons de plus que le putamen est fortement associé à ce processus. En revanche, les performances d’un apprentissage visuomoteur s’améliorent indépendamment du sommeil et sont de plus corrélées à une plus grande activation du cervelet. Finalement, en explorant l’effet du sommeil sur la connectivité cérébrale, nos résultats démontrent qu’en fait, un système cortico-striatal semble être plus intégré suite à la consolidation. C’est-à-dire que l’interaction au sein des régions du système est plus forte lorsque la consolidation a eu lieu, après une nuit de sommeil. En opposition, le simple passage du temps semble nuire à l’intégration de ce réseau cortico-striatal. En somme, nous avons pu élargir les connaissances quant au rôle du sommeil pour la mémoire procédurale, notamment en démontrant que ce ne sont pas tous les types d’apprentissages qui requièrent le sommeil pour amorcer le processus de consolidation. D’ailleurs, nous avons également démontré que cette dissociation de l’effet du sommeil est également reflétée par l’implication de deux réseaux cérébraux distincts. À savoir, un réseau cortico-striatal et un réseau cortico-cérébelleux pour la consolidation respective de l’apprentissage de séquence et d’adaptation visuomotrice. Enfin, nous suggérons que la consolidation durant le sommeil permet de protéger et favoriser une meilleure cohésion au sein du réseau cortico-striatal associé à notre tâche; un phénomène qui, s’il est retrouvé avec d’autres types d’apprentissage, pourrait être considéré comme un nouveau marqueur de la consolidation.

The combination of radar and lidar in space offers the unique potential to retrieve vertical profiles of ice water content and particle size globally, and two algorithms developed recently claim to have overcome the principal difficulty with this approach-that of correcting the lidar signal for extinction. In this paper "blind tests" of these algorithms are carried out, using realistic 94-GHz radar and 355-nm lidar backscatter profiles simulated from aircraft-measured size spectra, and including the effects of molecular scattering, multiple scattering, and instrument noise. Radiation calculations are performed on the true and retrieved microphysical profiles to estimate the accuracy with which radiative flux profiles could be inferred remotely. It is found that the visible extinction profile can be retrieved independent of assumptions on the nature of the size distribution, the habit of the particles, the mean extinction-to-backscatter ratio, or errors in instrument calibration. Local errors in retrieved extinction can occur in proportion to local fluctuations in the extinction-to-backscatter ratio, but down to 400 m above the height of the lowest lidar return, optical depth is typically retrieved to better than 0.2. Retrieval uncertainties are greater at the far end of the profile, and errors in total optical depth can exceed 1, which changes the shortwave radiative effect of the cloud by around 20%. Longwave fluxes are much less sensitive to errors in total optical depth, and may generally be calculated to better than 2 W m(-2) throughout the profile. It is important for retrieval algorithms to account for the effects of lidar multiple scattering, because if this is neglected, then optical depth is underestimated by approximately 35%, resulting in cloud radiative effects being underestimated by around 30% in the shortwave and 15% in the longwave. Unlike the extinction coefficient, the inferred ice water content and particle size can vary by 30%, depending on the assumed mass-size relationship (a problem common to all remote retrieval algorithms). However, radiative fluxes are almost completely determined by the extinction profile, and if this is correct, then errors in these other parameters have only a small effect in the shortwave (around 6%, compared to that of clear sky) and a negligible effect in the longwave.

The interaction of the chemokine receptor, CCR5, expressed in recombinant cells, with different G proteins was investigated and CCR5 was found to interact with G(i), G(o) and G(q) species. Interaction with Gi leads to G protein activation, whereas G. does not seem to be activated. Additionally, CCR5 activation also leads to phosphorylation of Janus kinase 2 (JAK2). Activation of JAK2 is independent of Gi or Gq activation. Gi protein activation was not prevented by inhibition of JAK, showing that heterotrimeric G protein activation and activation of the JAK/signal transducer and activator of transcription (STAT) pathway are independent of each other. This article aims to create intellectual space in which issues of social inequality and education can be analyzed and discussed in relation to the multifaceted and multi-levelled complexities of the modern world. It is divided into three sections. Section One locates the concept of social class in the context of the modern nation state during the period after the Second World War. Focusing particularly on the impact of 'Fordism' on social organization and cultural relations, it revisits the articulation of social justice issues in the United Kingdom, and the structures put into place at the time to alleviate educational and social inequalities. Section Two problematizes the traditional concept of social class in relation to economic, technological and sociocultural changes that have taken place around the world since the mid-1980s. In particular, it charts some of the changes to the international labour market and global patterns of consumption, and their collective impact on the re-constitution of class boundaries in 'developed countries'. This is juxtaposed with some of the major social effects of neo-classical economic policies in recent years on the sociocultural base in developing countries. It discusses some of the ways these inequalities are reflected in education. Section Three explores tensions between the educational ideals of the 'knowledge economy' and the discursive range of social inequalities that are emerging within and beyond the nation state. Drawing on key motifs identified throughout, the article concludes with a reassessment of the concept of social class within the global cultural economy. This is discussed in relation to some of the major equity and human rights issues in education today.

Amphiphilic chitosan-based polymers (M-w < 20 kDa) self-assemble in aqueous media at low micromolar concentrations to give previously unknown micellar clusters of 100-300 nm in size. Micellar clusters comprise smaller 10-30 nm aggregates, and the nanopolarity/drug incorporation efficiency of their hydrophobic domains can be tailored by varying the degree of lipidic derivatization and molecular weight of the carbohydrate. The extent of drug incorporation by these novel micellar clusters is 1 order of magnitude higher than is seen with triblock copolymers, with molar polymer/drug ratios of 1:48 to 1:67. On intravenous injection, the pharmacodynamic activity of a carbohydrate propofol formulation is increased by 1 order of magnitude when compared to a commercial emulsion formulation, and on topical ocular application of a carbohydrate prednisolone formulation, initial drug aqueous humor levels are similar to those found with a 10-fold dose of prednisolone suspension.
