This article presents the results of near-resonant Raman scattering measurements on GaAs/AlAs superlattices at room temperature. A strong enhancement of GaAs LO phonon-even modes resulted owing to a dipole-allowed Frohlich interaction in superlattices. Similar to the previous results, the LO phonon-even modes in a polarized configuration are observed. In contrast to previous work, however, what we observed in depolarized configurations is the LO phonon-odd modes instead of even modes. It is confirmed that the selection rules for near-resonant Raman scattering from LO phonons in this kind of superlattices are the same as those for off-resonant scattering. From the second-order Raman scattering, it is confirmed that polarized second-order Raman scattering spectra consist of overtones and combinations of two even modes, and depolarized second-order Raman scattering spectra consist of combinations of an even mode and an odd mode. Our experimental results coincide with the predictions using the recently developed Huang-Zhu model. A brief discussion on interface modes and their combination with confined modes is also presented.

The LO phonon modes in the barrier layers of a GaInAs/AlInAs multiple quantum well structure are investigated by resonance Raman scattering (RRS), the excitation laser photon energy tuned to resonate with the above barrier interband transition energy. The resonance enhancement of LO phonon peaks are shown to be caused by Frohlich electron-phonon interaction. The pressure-dependent profiles for both AlAs-like (LO(2) mode) and InAs-like (LO(1) mode) Raman peak intensities are well fitted by the Gaussian lineshape. The shift between these two profiles can be explained by the outgoing RRS mechanism, providing information on the pressure-induced shift of the excitonic transition energy. The amplitude ratios of the two profiles are close to 1, showing a well defined two-mode behavior and the nearly equal polarizability for Al-As and In-As bonds in AlInAs alloy.

Distributed Bragg reflectors (DBR) with different reflection wavelengths were designed, and were used to fabricate microcavity organic light-emitting diodes (OLEDs) based on tris(8-hydroxyquinoline)-aluminum (Alq(3)) as the emitter and N, N'-di(naphthalene-1-yl)-N, N'-diphenyl-benzidine (NPB) as the hole-transporting layer. The microcavity was composed of DBR dielectric mirror and metal electrode aluminum (Al) mirror. Some effects of vertical optical Fabry-Perot microcavity on spontaneous emission in OLEDs were investigated. Spectral narrowing, enhancement of emitting intensity and anglular dependence of emission were observed due to the microcavity effect. It was found experimentally that the utilization of DBR is a better method to adjust the emissive mode in the resonant cavity in OLEDs well. Thus the realization of different color light emission becomes possible by the combination of carefully designed microcavity and electroluminescent organic semiconductors in a single LED.

Organic white-light-emitting devices ( OLEDs) based on a multimode resonant microcavity defined by a pair of dielectric mirrors and metal mirrors were presented. By selective effects of the quarter-wave dielectric stack mirror on mode, white light emission containing three individual narrow peaks of red, green and blue was achieved, and showed weak dependence on the viewing angle. The Commission Internationale De L'Eclairage ( CIE) chromaticity coordinates changed from ( 0.29, 0.37) at 0 degrees to ( 0.31, 0.33) at 40 degrees. Furthermore, the brightness and electroluminescence efficiency of the microcavity OLEDs were enhanced compared with noncavity OLEDs. The maximum brightness reached 1940 cd m(-2) at a current density of 200 mA cm(-2), and the maximum current efficiency and power efficiency are 1.6 cd A(-1) at a current density of 12 mA cm(-2) and 0.41 1m W-1 at a current density of 1.6 mA cm(-2), which are over 1.6 times higher than that of a noncavity OLED.

This thesis is concerned with inductive charging of electric vehicle batteries. Rectified power form the 50/60 Hz utility feeds a dc-ac converter which delivers high-frequency ac power to the electric vehicle inductive coupling inlet. The inlet configuration has been defined by the Society of Automotive Engineers in Recommended Practice J-1773. This thesis studies converter topologies related to the series resonant converter. When coupled to the vehicle inlet, the frequency-controlled series-resonant converter results in a capacitively-filtered series-parallel LCLC (SP-LCLC) resonant converter topology with zero voltage switching and many other desirable features. A novel time-domain transformation analysis, termed Modal Analysis, is developed, using a state variable transformation, to analyze and characterize this multi-resonant fourth-orderconverter. Next, Fundamental Mode Approximation (FMA) Analysis, based on a voltage-source model of the load, and its novel extension, Rectifier-Compensated FMA (RCFMA) Analysis, are developed and applied to the SP-LCLC converter. The RCFMA Analysis is a simpler and more intuitive analysis than the Modal Analysis, and provides a relatively accurate closed-form solution for the converter behavior. Phase control of the SP-LCLC converter is investigated as a control option. FMA and RCFMA Analyses are used for detailed characterization. The analyses identify areas of operation, which are also validated experimentally, where it is advantageous to phase control the converter. A novel hybrid control scheme is proposed which integrates frequency and phase control and achieves reduced operating frequency range and improved partial-load efficiency. The phase-controlled SP-LCLC converter can also be configured with a parallel load and is an excellent option for the application. The resulting topology implements soft-switching over the entire load range and has high full-load and partial-load efficiencies. RCFMA Analysis is used to analyze and characterize the new converter topology, and good correlation is shown with experimental results. Finally, a novel single-stage power-factor-corrected ac-dc converter is introduced, which uses the current-source characteristic of the SP-LCLC topology to provide power factor correction over a wide output power range from zero to full load. This converter exhibits all the advantageous characteristics of its dc-dc counterpart, with a reduced parts count and cost. Simulation and experimental results verify the operation of the new converter.

This thesis is centred on two experimental fields of optical micro- and nanofibre research; higher mode generation/excitation and evanescent field optical manipulation. Standard, commercial, single-mode silica fibre is used throughout most of the experiments; this generally produces high-quality, single-mode, micro- or nanofibres when tapered in a flame-heated, pulling rig in the laboratory. Single mode fibre can also support higher transverse modes, when transmitting wavelengths below that of their defined single-mode regime cut-off. To investigate this, a first-order Laguerre-Gaussian beam, LG01 of 1064 nm wavelength and doughnut-shaped intensity profile is generated free space via spatial light modulation. This technique facilitates coupling to the LP11 fibre mode in two-mode fibre, and convenient, fast switching to the fundamental mode via computer-generated hologram modulation. Following LP11 mode loss when exponentially tapering 125μm diameter fibre, two mode fibre with a cladding diameter of 80μm is selected fir testing since it is more suitable for satisfying the adiabatic criteria for fibre tapering. Proving a fruitful endeavour, experiments show a transmission of 55% of the original LP11 mode set (comprising TE01, TM01, HE21e,o true modes) in submicron fibres. Furthermore, by observing pulling dynamics and progressive mode-lass behaviour, it is possible to produce a nanofibre which supports only the TE01 and TM01 modes, while suppressing the HE21e,o elements of the LP11 group. This result provides a basis for experimental studies of atom trapping via mode-interference, and offers a new set of evanescent field geometries for sensing and particle manipulation applications. The thesis highlights the experimental results of the research unit’s Cold Atom subgroup, who successfully integrated one such higher-mode nanofibre into a cloud of cold Rubidium atoms. This led to the detection of stronger signals of resonance fluorescence coupling into the nanofibre and for light absorption by the atoms due to the presence of higher guided modes within the fibre. Theoretical work on the impact of the curved nanofibre surface on the atomic-surface van der Waals interaction is also presented, showing a clear deviation of the potential from the commonly-used flat-surface approximation. Optical micro- and nanofibres are also useful tools for evanescent-field mediated optical manipulation – this includes propulsion, defect-induced trapping, mass migration and size-sorting of micron-scale particles in dispersion. Similar early trapping experiments are described in this thesis, and resulting motivations for developing a targeted, site-specific particle induction method are given. The integration of optical nanofibres into an optical tweezers is presented, facilitating individual and group isolation of selected particles, and their controlled positioning and conveyance in the evanescent field. The effects of particle size and nanofibre diameter on pronounced scattering is experimentally investigated in this systems, as are optical binding effects between adjacent particles in the evanescent field. Such inter-particle interactions lead to regulated self-positioning and particle-chain speed enhancements.

Thermal-optical analysis is a conventional method for classifying carbonaceous aerosols as organic carbon (OC) and elemental carbon (EC). This article examines the effects of three different temperature protocols on the measured EC. For analyses of parallel punches from the same ambient sample, the protocol with the highest peak helium-mode temperature (870°C) gives the smallest amount of EC, while the protocol with the lowest peak helium-mode temperature (550°C) gives the largest amount of EC. These differences are observed when either sample transmission or reflectance is used to define the OC/EC split. An important issue is the effect of the peak helium-mode temperature on the relative rate at which different types of carbon with different optical properties evolve from the filter. Analyses of solvent-extracted samples are used to demonstrate that high temperatures (870°C) lead to premature EC evolution in the helium-mode. For samples collected in Pittsburgh, this causes the measured EC to be biased low because the attenuation coefficient of pyrolyzed carbon is consistently higher than that of EC. While this problem can be avoided by lowering the peak helium-mode temperature, analyses of wood smoke dominated ambient samples and levoglucosan-spiked filters indicate that too low helium-mode peak temperatures (550°C) allow non-light absorbing carbon to slip into the oxidizing mode of the analysis. If this carbon evolves after the OC/EC split, it biases the EC measurements high. Given the complexity of ambient aerosols, there is unlikely to be a single peak helium-mode temperature at which both of these biases can be avoided. Dispersion relations are obtained for the propagation of symmetric and antisymmetric modes in a free transversely isotropic plate. Dispersion curves are plotted for the first four symmetric modes for a magnesium plate immersed in water. The first mode is highly damped and switches over to the second mode when the normalized frequency exceeds 12.

A side-fed bifilar helix antenna can be integrated with a quadrifilar helix antenna in a piggy back configuration in order to achieve a dual-mode radiating structure. The overall length of the structure is 0.44 lambda at the resonant frequency (1.54 GHz) of the space mode antenna and 0.39 lambda at the resonant frequency (1.34 GHz) of the terrestrial mode antenna. A ridged-waveguide diplexer incorporating integrated compact ridged-waveguide filters and a ridged-waveguide T-junction is presented. The compact size of the filter is achieved by integrating of bandpass periodic filter, and a low-pass structure is used in order to suppress spurious responses. Simulation using the mode-matching method has been carried out for ridge-waveguide filters and T junctions and the results are presented. The measured results are in good agreement with the simulated results. (C) 2004 Wiley Periodicals, Inc.

This article presents an overview of current understanding of the interaction of low-energy positrons with molecules with emphasis on resonances, positron attachment, and annihilation. Measurements of annihilation rates resolved as a function of positron energy reveal the presence of vibrational Feshbach resonances (VFRs) for many polyatomic molecules. These resonances lead to strong enhancement of the annihilation rates. They also provide evidence that positrons bind to many molecular species. A quantitative theory of VFR-mediated attachment to small molecules is presented. It is tested successfully for selected molecule (e.g., methyl halides and methanol) where all modes couple to the positron continuum. Combination and overtone resonances are observed and their role is elucidated. Molecules that do not bind positrons and hence do not exhibit such resonances are discussed. In larger molecules, annihilation rates from VFR far exceed those explicable on the basis of single-mode resonances. These enhancements increase rapidly with the number of vibrational degrees of freedom, approximately as the fourth power of the number of atoms in the molecule. While the details are as yet unclear, intramolecular vibrational energy redistributio (IVR) to states that do not couple directly to the positron continuum appears to be responsible for these enhanced annihilation rates. In connection with IVR, experimental evidence indicates that inelastic positron escape channels are relatively rare. Downshifts of the VFR from the vibrational mode energies, obtained by measuring annihilate rates as a function of incident positron energy, have provided binding energies for 30 species. Their dependence upon molecular parameters and their relationship to positron-atom and positron-molecule binding-energy calculations are discussed. Feshbach resonances and positron binding to molecules are compared with the analogous electron-molecul (negative-ion) cases. The relationship of VFR-mediated annihilation to other phenomena such as Doppler broadening of the gamma-ray annihilation spectra, annihilation of thermalized positrons in gases, and annihilation-induced fragmentation of molecules is discussed. Possible areas for future theoretical and experimental investigation are also discussed.

The efficient resonant nonlinear coupling between localized surface plasmon modes is demonstrated in a simple and intuitive way using boundary integral formulation and utilizing second-order optical nonlinearity. The nonlinearity is derived from the hydrodynamic description of electron plasma and originates from the presence of material interfaces in the case of small metal particles. The coupling between fundamental and second-harmonic modes is shown to be symmetry selective and proportional to the spatial overlap between polarization dipole density of the second-harmonic mode and the square of the polarization charge density of the fundamental mode. Particles with high geometrical symmetry will convert a far-field illumination into dark nonradiating second-harmonic modes, such as quadrupoles. Effective second-harmonic susceptibilities are proportional to the surface-to-volume ratio of a particle, emphasizing the nanoscale enhancement of the effect.

This paper presents an optically reconfigurable E-plane waveguide resonator and filter. N-type silicon dice doped with phosphorus is used as the switching element and is connected to the edge of a metallic fin. Illumination of the silicon dice allows realization of a different length of the fin, thus creating a shift in resonant frequency of the structure. Frequency tuning range up to about 5.2% is achieved for the resonator as well as the filter. Measurements on a fabricated optically reconfigurable resonator confirm the accuracy of the design procedure. Measured responses show good agreement with simulation.

A microwave dielectric ceramic resonator based on BaCe2Ti5O15 and Ba5Nb4O15 have been prepared by conventional solid state ceramic route. The dielectric resonators (DRs) have high dielectric constant 32 and 40 for BaCe2Ti5O15 and Ba5Nb4O15, respectively. The whispering gallery mode (WGM) technique was employed for the accurate determination of the dielectric properties in the microwave frequency range. The BaCe2Ti5O15 and Ba5Nb4O15 have quality factors (Q X F) of 30,600 and 53,000 respectively. The quality factor is found to depend on the azimuthal mode numbers. The temperature coefficient of resonant frequency (Tr) of BaCe2Ti5O15 and Ba5Nb4O15 have been measured accurately using different resonant modes and are + 41 and + 78 ppm/K, respectively
