Bulk Ge15Te85-xInx (1 <= x <= 11) series of glasses have been found to exhibit a threshold switching behaviour for an input current of 2 mA. An initial decrease is seen in the switching voltages (V-T) with the addition of indium, which is due to the higher metallicity of indium. An increase is seen in V-T above 3 at.% of indium, which proceeds until 8 at.%, with a change in slope (lower to higher) seen around 7 at.%. Beyond x = 8, a reversal in trend is exhibited in the variation of V-T, with a well-defined minimum around x = 9 at.%. Based on the composition dependence of V-T, it is proposed that Ge15Te85-xInx glasses exhibit an extended rigidity percolation threshold. The composition, x = 3, at which the V-T starts to increase and the composition, x = 7, at which a slope change is exhibited correspond to the onset and completion, respectively, of the extended stiffness transition. Thermal studies and photoconductivity e85-xInx glasses. In addition, the minimum seen in V-T at x = 9 is associated with the chemical threshold (CT) of this glassy system.

The aim of the study was to examine the influence of school smoking policy and school smoking prevention programs on the smoking behaviour of students in high schools in Prince Edward Island using the School Health Action Planning Evaluation System (SHAPES). A total sample included 13,131 observations of students in grades 10-12 in ten high schools in Prince Edward Island over three waves of data collection (1999, 2000, and 2001). Changes in prevalence of smoking and factors influencing smoking behaviour were analyzed using descriptive statistics and Chi-Square tests. Multi-level logistic regression analyses were used to examine how both school and student characteristics were associated with smoking behaviour (I, II, III, IV). Since students were located within schools, a basic 2-level nested structure was used in which individual students (level 1) were nested within schools (level 2). For grade 12 students, the combination of both school policies and programs was not associated with the risk of smoking and the presence of the new policy was not associated with decreased risk of smoking, unless there were clear rules in place (I). For the grade 10 study, (II) schools with both policies and programs were not associated with decreased risk of smoking. However, the smoking behaviour of older students (grade 12) at a school was associated with younger students’ (grade 10) smoking behaviour. Students first enrolled in a high school in grade 9, rather than grade 10, were at increased risk of occasional smoking. For students who transitioned from grade 10 to 12 (III), close friends smoking had a substantial influence on smoking behaviour for both males and females (III). Having one or more close friends who smoke (Odds Ratio (OR) = 37.46; 95% CI = 19.39 to 72.36), one or more smokers in the home (OR = 2.35; 95% CI = 1.67 to 3.30) and seeing teachers and staff smoking on or near school property (OR=1.78; 95% CI = 1.13 to 2.80), were strongly associated with increased risk of smoking for grade 12 students. Smoking behaviour increased for both junior (Group 1) and senior (Group 2) students (IV). Group 1 students indicated a greater decrease in smoking behaviour and factors influencing smoking behaviour compared to those of Group 2. Students overestimating the percentage of youth their age who smoke was strongly associated with increased likelihood of smoking. Smoking rates showed a decreasing trend (1999, 2000, and 2001). However, policies and programs alone were not successful in influencing smoking behaviour of youth. Rather, factors within the students and schools contextual environment influenced smoking behaviour. Comprehensive approaches are required for school-based tobacco prevention interventions. Issue addressed: Previous research has shown that approximately 60% of nurses in Australia are overweight or obese, insufficiently active and have an unhealthy diet. The aim of this study was to gain an understanding of nurses’ determinants contributing to these behaviours. This will inform a needs assessment for a future workplace health promotion program (WHPP) in this group. Methods: Four focus group discussions (n = 17) were conducted with a convenience sample of nurses aged 25–59 years from three hospitals in the Brisbane metropolitan area. Questions addressed barriers and motivation towards diet and physical activity (PA), and suggestions for future WHPP. Data were analysed with Nvivo10 following a thematic analysis with a realistic approach using Self-determination theory as a framework. Results: Work environment was the main barrier for healthy diet behaviours. Long working hours and lack of breaks challenged nurses’ self-control and self-regulation when making dietary choices. Fatigue was the main barrier for PA. However, relaxation, feeling energised before work and better sleep after working night shifts motivated nurses to do PA. Social environment at work seemed to be an effective external motivation to encourage healthy diet and regular PA. Goal-setting, self-monitoring and social support at work were identified as potential WHHP strategies. Conclusion: The workplace and job demands negatively impacts nurses’ lifestyle behaviours. Future interventions should include social support from colleagues, which could motivate nurses to make healthier food choices at work and be more active outside work.

There is increasing evidence that the origins of poor adult health and health inequalities can be traced back to circumstances preceding current socioeconomic position and living conditions. The life-course approach to examining the determinants of health has emphasised that exposure to adverse social and economic circumstances in earlier life or concurrent adverse circumstances due to unfavourable living conditions in earlier life may lead to poor health, health-damaging behaviour, disease or even premature death in adulthood. There is, however, still a lack of knowledge about the contribution of social and economic circumstances in childhood and youth to adult health and health inequalities, and even less is known about how environmental and behavioural factors in adulthood mediate the effects of earlier adverse experiences. The main purpose of this study was to deepen our understanding of the development of poor health, health-damaging behaviours and health inequalities during the life-course. Its aim was to find out which factors in earlier and current circumstances determine health, the most detrimental indicators of health behaviour (smoking, heavy drinking and obesity as a proxy for the balance between nutrition and exercise), and educational health differences in young adults in Finland. Following the ideas of the social pathway theory, it was assumed that childhood environment affects adult health and its proximal determinants via different pathways, including educational, work and family careers. Early adulthood was studied as a significant phase of life when many behavioural patterns and living conditions relevant to health are established. In addition, socioeconomic health inequalities seem to emerge rapidly when moving into adulthood; they are very small or non-existent in childhood and adolescence, but very marked by early middle age. The data of this study were collected in 2000 2001 as part of the Health 2000 Survey (N = 9,922), a cross-sectional and nationally representative health interview and examination survey. The main subset of data used in this thesis was the one comprising the age group 18 29 years (N = 1,894), which included information collected by standardised structured computer-aided interviews and self-administered questionnaires. The survey had a very high participation rate at almost 90% for the core questions. According to the results of this study, childhood circumstances predict the health of young adults. Almost all the childhood adversities studied were found to be associated with poor self-rated health and psychological distress in early adulthood, although fewer associations were found with the somatic morbidity typical of young adults. These effects seemed to be more or less independent of the young adult s own education. Childhood circumstances also had a strong effect on smoking and heavy drinking, although current circumstances and education in particular, played a role in mediating this effect. Parental smoking and alcohol abuse had an influence on the corresponding behaviours of offspring. Childhood circumstances had a role in the development of obesity and, to a lesser extent, overweight, particularly in women. The findings support the notion that parental education has a strong effect on early adult obesity, even independently of the young adult s own educational level. There were marked educational differences in self-rated health in early adulthood: those in the lowest educational category were most likely to have average or poorer health. Childhood social circumstances seemed to explain a substantial part of these educational differences. In addition, daily smoking and heavy drinking contributed substantially to educational health differences. However, the contribution of childhood circumstances was largely shared with health behaviours adopted by early adulthood. Employment also shared the effects of childhood circumstances on educational health differences. The results indicate that childhood circumstances are important in determining health, health behaviour and health inequalities in early adulthood. Early recognition of childhood adversities followed by relevant support measures may play an important role in preventing the unfortunate pathways leading to the development of poor health, health-damaging behaviour and health inequalities. It is crucially important to recognise the needs of children living in adverse circumstances as well as children of substance abusing parents. In addition, single-parent families would benefit from support. Differences in health and health behaviours between different sub-groups of the population mean that we can expect to see ever greater health differences when today s generation of young adults grows older. This presents a formidable challenge to national health and social policy as well as health promotion. Young adults with no more than primary level education are at greatest risk of poor health. Preventive policies should emphasise the role of low educational level as a key determinant of health-damaging behaviours and poor health. Keywords: health, health behaviour, health inequalities, life-course, socioeconomic position, education, childhood circumstances, self-rated health, psychological distress, somatic morbidity, smoking, heavy drinking, BMI, early adulthood

We report the natural history and behaviour of the primitively eusocial wasp Ropalidia marginata with a special reference to the males. We found that just as nests of this species are found throughout the year, so are the males. Females spend all their life in their nests but males stay in their natal nests only for 1-12 days and leave to lead a nomadic life. Males maintained in the laboratory can live for up to 140 days. Like all eusocial hymenopteran males, R. marginata males also do not perform any colony maintenance activities. We found that males did not forage or feed larvae. Compared with females, males showed fewer dominance and subordinate behaviours and being solicited behaviour and more feeding self and soliciting behaviours. By comparing males with young females, we found similar differences, except that the males showed similar rates of feeding self and higher rates of subordinate behaviour.

In this paper, the behaviour of a group of autonomous mobile agents under cyclic pursuit is studied. Cyclic pursuit is a simple distributed control law, in which the agent i pursues agent i + 1 modulo n.. The equations of motion are linear, with no kinematic constraints on motion. Behaviourally, the agents are identical, but may have different controller gains. We generalize existing results in the literature and show that by selecting these gains, the behavior of the agents can be controlled. They can be made to converge at a point or be directed to move in a straight line. The invariance of the point of convergence with the sequence of pursuit is also shown.

A dramatically different consumption pattern seems to be emerging among a vast group of consumers. This may mean that conventional consumer stereotypes and segmentation theory are becoming outdated. The so called hybrid consumers seem to increasingly opt for both premium and budget alternatives in various product and service categories while mid-priced alternatives are losing share in their consumption basket. Although this type of polarisation, or dispersion, is already recognized as an important change, hybrid behaviour is still largely under-researched. The present study aims to analyze the possible drivers of hybrid consumption and by identifying typical categories and situations of trading up versus trading down derive tentative characteristics of hybrid consumption for further research on the topic. A tentative pattern of hybrid consumption was identified, which relates trading up to high-involvement, discretional spending and trading down to low-involvement necessities. However, it was also found that hybrid consumption transcends product category boundaries and may thus be less straightforward than previously perhaps assumed. In addition, a purchase pattern continuum was developed, accounting for various degrees of hybrid consumption.

Introduction The alum family of double salts with the general formula M1+M3+(RO4)2.12H2O where M1+ is a monovalent ion (M1+ = K, Rb, Cs, Tl, NH4, CH3NH3, NH3OH3 NH3NH2, etc.) and M3+ is a trivalent metal such as Al, Fe, Cr, V, In, Ga, etc. and R is S or Se, form an isomorphous series and their general features indicate a common cubic space group Pa3. Lipson1 showed subsequently that there exist three different structure types agr, β and γ and the structure of a particular alum is dependent on the radius of the monovalent atom. The agr structure is typical of medium sized ions, the β of the larger ones and the γ of the small Na atom.2 Ferroelectricity has been reported only in alums containing NH4, CH3NH3, NH3NH3 and NH3OH. Their hindered rotations as well as the influence of sulphate group disorder on the dielectric behaviour of alums is still not clear.3 No study of the temperature dependence of the low frequency dielectric constant of some of the alums, particularly those of Cs, Rb and Tl, have been made so The present investigation was undertaken to correlate their dielectric behaviour with their composition and structural differences. Under the same experimental conditions, methyl ammonium and ammonium alums also were studied and compared with the known data.

Introduction Dicalcium strontium propionate (DCSP) undergoes a ferroelectric phase transition at about 28 1.5 K, with the spontaneous polarization occurring along the tetragonal C-axis.1 Takashige et al.2,3 have recently reported ferroelectricity in annealed samples of dicalcium lead propionate (DCLP) in the range 191 K to 331 K. The removal of the inner biasing field by annealing has been known in the case of DCLP3 and DCSP.4 Because of the possible dependence of the inner biasing field on the particle size, a study of the temperature dependence of the dielectric behaviour of the powdered samples of these compounds was undertaken.

Sound recordings and behavioural data were collected from four primate species of two genera (Macaca, Presbytis). Comparative analyses of structural and behavioural aspects of vocal communication revealed a high degree of intrageneric similarity but striking intergeneric differences. In the two macaque species (Macaca silenus, Macaca radiata), males and females shared the major part of the repertoire. In contrast, in the two langurs (Presbytis johnii, Presbytis entellus), many calls were exclusive to adult males. Striking differences between both species groups occurred with respect to age-specific patterns of vocal behaviour. The diversity of vocal behaviour was assessed from the number of different calls used and the proportion of each call in relation to total vocal output for a given age/sex class. In Macaca, diversity decreases with the age of the vocalizer, whereas in Presbytis the age of the vocalizer and the diversity of vocal behaviour are positively correlated. A comparison of the data of the two genera does not suggest any causal relationship between group composition (e.g. multi-male vs. one-male group) and communication system. Within each genus, interspecific differences in vocal behaviour can be explained by differences in social behaviour (e.g. group cohesion, intergroup relation, mating behaviour) and functional disparities. Possible factors responsible for the pronounced intergeneric differences in vocal behaviour between Macaca and Presbytis are discussed.

Reactions of group 6 metal carbonyls with bis(pyrazolyl) phosphazenes yield metal tricarbonyl complexes, [M(CO)3.L] [L = N3P3Ph4 (3, 5-Me2C3HN2)2 (1) or N3P3(MeNCH2CH2O)2 (3,5-Me2C3HN2)2(4)]. The structure of the complex [Mo(CO)3.1], determined by single-crystal X-ray analysis, shows that the (pyrazolyl) phosphazene acts as a tridentate ligand; the two pyridinic pyrazolyl nitrogen atoms and a phosphazene ring nitrogen atom are coordinated to the metal. A similar structure is proposed for the complexes [M(CO)3.4] (M = Mo or W] on the basis of their spectroscopic data.

Polyamide-phosphate esters were synthesized by interfacial polycondensation of aryl phosphorodichloridates with the diols of phenoxaphosphine and phosphine oxide in the presence of a phase-transfer catalyst. The polymers were characterized by infra-red and 1H, 13C and 31P nuclear magnetic resonance (n.m.r.) spectroscopy. The molecular weights were determined by end-group analysis using 31P n.m.r. spectral data. The phenoxaphosphine-containing polymers showed superior thermostability and flame retardancy over the phosphine-oxide-containing polymers.

Mononuclear copper(II) complexes of tri- and tetra-dentate tripodal ligands containing phenolic hydroxyl and benzimidazole or pyridine groups have been isolated. They are of the type (CuL(X)].nH2O, [CuL(H2O)]X.nH2O or [CuL].nH2O where X = Cl-, ClO4-, N3- or NCS- and n = 0-4. The electronic spectra of all the complexes exhibit a broad absorption band around 14000 cm-1 and the polycrystalline as well as the frozen-solution EPR spectra are axial, indicating square-based geometries. The crystal structure of [CuL(Cl)] [HL = (2-hydroxy-5-nitrobenzyl)bis(2-pyridyl-methyl)amine] revealed a square-pyramidal geometry around Cu(II). The mononuclear complex crystallises in the triclinic space group P1BAR with a = 6.938(1), b = 11.782(6), c = 12.678(3) angstrom and alpha = 114.56(3), beta = 92.70(2), gamma = 95.36(2)-degrees. The co-ordination plane is comprised of one tertiary amine and two pyridine nitrogens and a chloride ion. The phenolate ion unusually occupies the axial site, possibly due to the electron-withdrawing p-nitro group. The enhanced pi delocalisation involving the p-nitrophenolate donor elevates the E1/2 values. The spectral and electrochemical results suggest the order of donor strength as nitrophenolate < pyridine < benzimidazole in the tridentate and nitrophenolate < benzimidazole < pyridine in the tetradentate ligand complexes.

The linear quadridentate ligand N,N'-bis(benzimidazoI-2-ylethyl)ethane-l,2-diamine (L') and its 1 - methylbenzimidazole analogue (L2) and homologues form 1 : 1 complexes with Cu(CIO,),; L' also forms complexes of the types CuL'X, where X = NO,, PF,, Br or CI and CuL'(X)Y where X = CI or Br and Y = CIO, or Br. Deep blue CuL1Br,*2H20 crystallizes in the monoclinic space group C2/c with Z = 4, a = 9.91 9(2), b = 16.626(3), c = 14.1 02(3) le\ and p = 94.39(2)". The structure was solved by Patterson and Fourier difference methods and refined by the least-squares technique to R = 0.064 for 2195 independent reflections with / > 1.50(/). The molecule lies on a two-fold axis symmetrically around Cu". The co-ordination around Cu" is found to be square planar with two amino nitrogens and two benzimidazole nitrogens forming the equatorial plane [CU-N 1.983(3) and 2.037(4) A]. The bromides are at longer distances [3.349(1) A] in axial sites. Ligand field and EPR spectra indicate that one bromide or chloride ion is axially co-ordinated to Cu" in [CuL1l2+. This ion exhibits quasi-reversible redox behaviour. Electrochemical studies of the dihalides in methanol have established the presence of [CuL'X,], [CuL'(X)]+ and [CuL'I2+ in equilibrium. In complexes with 565 [CuL4I2+ [L4 = N,Nbis( benzimidazol-2-ylmethyl)ethane-l,2-diamine] and 555 [CuL3] [L3 = N,N'-bis(1 -methylbenzimidazol- 2-ylmethyl)propane-l,3-diamine] chelate rings, Cull does not seem to lie in the N, square plane, as revealed by their low A values and irreversible electrochemical behaviour. The Cu"-Cu' redox potentials in methanol are in the order [CuL1I2+ < [CuL3I2+ < [CuL4I2+; this illustrates that sixmembered chelate rings are suitable to stabilize Cu", when CU-N 0 interactions are favourable.
