Spatially resolved cathodoluminescence (CL) study of a ZnO nanonail, having thin shank, tapered neck, and hexagonal head sections, is reported. Monochromatic imaging and line scan profiling indicate that the wave guiding and leaking from growth imperfections in addition to the oxygen deficiency variation determine the spatial contrast of CL emissions. Occurrence of resonance peaks at identical wavelengths regardless of CL-excitation spots is inconsistent with the whispering-gallery mode (WGM) resonances of a two-dimensional cavity in the finite difference time domain simulation. However, three dimensioanl cavity simulation produced WGM peaks that are consistent with the experimental spectra, including transverse-electric resonances that are comparable to transverse-magnetic ones.

A modified microstrip-fed planar monopole antenna with open circuited coupled line is presented in this paper. The operational bandwidth of the proposed antenna covers the 2.4 GHz ISM band (2.42-2.48 GHz) and the 5 GHz WLAN band (5 GHz to 6 GHz). The radiating elements occupy a small area of 23×8 mm2. The Finite Difference Time Domain method is used to predict the input impedance of the antenna. The calculated return loss shows very good agreement with measured data. Reasonable antenna gain is observed across the operating band. The measured radiation patterns are similar to those of a simple monopole antenna.

An atomic force microscope (AFM) assisted surface plasmons leakage radiation photolithography technique has been numerically demonstrated by using two-dimensional finite-difference time-domain (2D-FDTD) method. With the aid of a metallic AFM tip, particular characteristic of the Kretstchmann configuration to excite surface plasmons (SPs) is utilized to achieve large-area patterns with high spatial resolution and contrast, the photoresist could be exposed with low power laser due to the remarkable local field enhancement at the metal/dielectric interface and the resonant localized SPs modes near the tip. Good tolerance on the film thickness and incident angle has been obtained, which provides a good practicability for experiments. This photolithography technique proposed here can realize large-area, high-resolution, high-contrast, nondestructive, arbitrary-structure fabrication of nanoscale devices. (c) 2007 Elsevier B.V. Mode characteristics of a square microcavity with an output waveguide on the middle of one side, laterally confined by an insulating layer SiO2 and a p-electrode metal Au, are investigated by two-dimensional finite-difference time-domain technique. The mode quality (Q) factors versus the width of the output waveguide are calculated for Fabry-Peacuterot type and whispering-gallery type modes in the square cavity. Mode coupling between the confined modes in the square cavity and the guided modes in the output waveguide determines the mode Q factors, which is greatly influenced by the symmetry behaviors of the modes. Fabry-Peacuterot type modes can also have high Q factors due to the high reflectivity of the Au layer for the vertical incident mode light rays. For the square cavity with side length 4 mu m and refractive index 3.2, the mode Q factors of the Fabry-Peacuterot type modes can reach 10(4) at the mode wavelength of 1.5 mu m as the output waveguide width is 0.4 mu m.

The eigenmode characteristics for equilateral triangle resonator (ETR) semiconductor microlasers are analysed by the finite-difference time-domain technique and the Pade approximation. The random Gaussian correlation function and sinusoidal function are used to model the side roughness of the ETR. The numerical results show that the roughness can cause the split of the degenerative modes, but the confined modes can still have a high quality factor. For the ETR with a 3 mum side length and the sinusoidal fluctuation, we can have a quality factor of 800 for the fundamental mode in the wavelength of 1500 nm, as the amplitude of roughness is 75 mn.

Bodyworn antennas are found in a wide range of medical, military and personal communication applications, yet reliable communication from the surface of the human body still presents a range of engineering challenges. At UHF and microwave frequencies, bodyworn antennas can suffer from reduced efficiency due to electromagnetic absorption in tissue, radiation pattern fragmentation and variations in feed-point impedance. The significance and nature of these effects are system specific and depend on the operating frequency, propagation environment and physical constraints on the antenna itself. This paper describes how numerical electromagnetic modelling techniques such as FDTD (finite-difference time-domain) can be used in the design of bodyworn antennas. Examples are presented for 418 MHz, 916 .5 MHz and 2 . 45 GHz, in the context of both biomedical signalling and wireless personal-area networking applications such as the Bluetooth(TM)* wireless technology.

Numerical sound synthesis is often carried out using the finite difference time domain method. In order to analyse the stability of the derived models, energy methods can be used for both linear and nonlinear settings. For Hamiltonian systems the existence of a conserved numerical energy-like quantity can be used to guarantee the stability of the simulations. In this paper it is shown how to derive similar discrete conservation laws in cases where energy is dissipated due to friction or in the presence of an energy source due to an external force. A damped harmonic oscillator (for which an analytic solution is available) is used to present the proposed methodology. After showing how to arrive at a conserved quantity, the simulation of a nonlinear single reed shows an example of an application in the context of musical acoustics.

In this paper, a novel nanolens with super resolution, based on the photon nanojet effect through dielectric nanostructures in visible wavelengths, is proposed. The nanolens is made from plastic SU-8, consisting of parallel semi-cylinders in an array. This paper focuses on the lens designed by numerical simulation with the finite-difference time domain method and nanofabrication of the lens by grayscale electron beam lithography combined with a casting/bonding/lift-off transfer process. Monte Carlo simulation for injected charge distribution and development modeling was applied to define the resultant 3D profile in PMMA as the template for the lens shape. After the casting/bonding/lift-off process, the fabricated nanolens in SU-8 has the desired lens shape, very close to that of PMMA, indicating that the pattern transfer process developed in this work can be reliably applied not only for the fabrication of the lens but also for other 3D nanopatterns in general. The light distribution through the lens near its surface was initially characterized by a scanning near-field optical microscope, showing a well defined focusing image of designed grating lines. Such focusing function supports the great prospects of developing a novel nanolithography based on the photon nanojet effect.

The big proliferation of mobile communication systems has caused an increased concern about the interaction between the human body and the antennas of mobile handsets. In order to study the problem, a multiband antenna was designed, fabricated and measured to operate over two frequency sub bands 900 and 1800 MHz. After that, we simulated the same antenna, but now, in the presence of a human head model to analyze the head's influence. First, the influence of the human head on the radiation efficiency of the antenna has been investigated as a function of the distance between the head and the antenna and with the inclination of the antenna. Furthermore, the relative amount of the electromagnetic power absorbed in the head has been obtained. In this study the electromagnetic analysis has been performed via FDTD (Finite Difference Time Domain).

The thesis relates to the investigations carried out on Rectangular Dielectric Resonator Antenna configurations suitable for Mobile Communication applications. The main objectives of the research are to: - numerically compute the radiation characteristics of a Rectangular DRA - identify the resonant modes - validate the numerically predicted data through simulation and experiment 0 ascertain the influence of the geometrical and material parameters upon the radiation behaviour of the antenna ° develop compact Rectangular DRA configurations suitable for Mobile Communication applications Although approximate methods exist to compute the resonant frequency of Rectangular DRA’s, no rigorous analysis techniques have been developed so far to evaluate the resonant modes. In this thesis a 3D-FDTD (Finite Difference Time Domain) Modeller is developed using MATLAB® for the numerical computation of the radiation characteristics of the Rectangular DRA. The F DTD method is a powerful yet simple algorithm that involves the discretimtion and solution of the derivative form of Maxwell’s curl equations in the time domain.
