A partial study of vertical distribution of conventional no-till seeders and spatial variability of seed depth placement of maize in the Alentejo region, Portugal

The requirements for a good stand in a no-till field are the same as those for conventional planting as well as added field and machinery management. Among the various factors that contribute towards producing a successful maize crop, seed depth placement is a key determinant. Although most no-till planters on the market work well under good soil and residue conditions, adjustments and even modifications are frequently needed when working with compacted or wet soils or with heavy residues. The main objective of this study, carried out in 2010, 2011 and 2012, was to evaluate the vertical distribution and spatial variability of seed depth placement in a maize crop under no-till conditions, using precision farming technologies and conventional no-till seeders. The results obtained indicate that the seed depth placement was affected by soil moisture content and forward speed. The seed depth placement was negatively correlated with soil resistance and seeding depth had a significant impact on mean emergence time and the percentage of emerged plants. Shallow average depth values and high coefficients of variation suggest a need for improvements in controlling the seeders’ sowing depth mechanism or more accurate calibration by operators in the field.

Terra de charneca erma e de saudade: a construção simbólica do Alentejo português na obra de Florbela Espanca (1916-1930)

In this work, we investigate the symbolic construction of a particular spatiality, starting from the theoretical assumption that spaces are subjective constructions guided by different cultures, feelings and rationales, but mostly spaces are human constructs driven by social relations, as a result of the material investment and symbol that reflects the needs of a particular society at a given time of historical development. Accordingly, we analyze the construction and symbolic imagery of the central region of Portugal, the Alentejo, from the literary production (1916 – 1930) the English poet Florbela Espanca D'Alma Conception Espanca. Thus, we propose to analyze the florbelian work not only from its internal relations, but also external, emphasizing the link between history, space and literature. Thus, we propose to inquire about the symbolic dimension – the meanings of images and representations – which prompted one of the most controversial Portuguese poets of the early twentieth to look into the poetic construction of space Alentejo century, questioning not only the senses brokered by speech literary Florbela Espanca to invent your Alentejo, adorned with memories, pain and longing, but investigate how the socio-cultural environment influenced your work, in your life and ways to feel and live the Alentejo. To better understand how the poet means the Alentejo spatiality, throughout this work we question three categories of space in the work of Florbela Espanca: the region, the countryside and the landscape of the Alentejo. Thus, this research falls within the field of cultural history in the medical we will work with the entire literary output Florbela Espanca, letters, diaries, photos and biographical and literary criticism, by establishing the time frame of 1916 – beginning of intellectual activity Florbela Spank – the 1930 – publication of Blossom Heath (posthumous) and the suicide of the poet. Geoquímica dos filões máficos de Lagoa (Maciço de Morais, Trás-os-Montes, NE Portugal)

No Maciço de Morais, os gnaisses de Lagoa são intruídos por filões máficos, de idade precâmbrica-câmbrica, que cortam um "fabric" metamórfico precoce naqueles gnaisses. Os filões máficos de Lagoa têm características geoquímicas de toleítos continentais e testemunham processos ACF. A actividade magmática em que esses filões se inserem reflecte ascenção astenosférica subsequente ao sobre-espessamento crustal precâmbrico, correspondendo a uma manifestação precoce do regime tectónico/magmático que irá caracterizar, durante o Paleozóico inferior, o ciclo varisco ibérico.

Development of an historical landscape photography database to support landscape change analysis in the Northeast of Portugal

Repeat photography is an efficient, effective and useful method to identify trends of changes in the landscapes. It was used to illustrate long-term changes occurring in the landscapes. In the Northeast of Portugal, landscapes changes is currently driven mostly by agriculture abandonment and agriculture and energy policy. However, there is a need to monitoring changes in the region using a multitemporal and multiscale approach. This project aimed to establish an online repository of oblique digital photography from the region to be used to register the condition of the landscape as recorded in historical and contemporary photography over time as well as to support qualitative and quantitative assessment of change in the landscape using repeat photography techniques and methods. It involved the development of a relational database and a series of web-based services using PHP: Hypertext Preprocessor language, and the development of an interface, with Joomla, of pictures uploading and downloading by users. The repository will make possible to upload, store, search by location, theme, or date, display, and download pictures for Northeastern Portugal. The website service is devoted to help researchers to obtain quickly the photographs needed to apply RP through a developed search engine. It can be accessed at: http://esa.ipb.pt/digitalandscape/.

Rural tourism destination competitiveness: Portugal vs Belarus

This research presents a study aimed to evaluate the performance and competitiveness of tourist destinations in Portugal and Belarus within regions. The evaluation was performed under an analytical tool, Market Share Analysis proposed by Faulkner (1997). In addition, it was used some descriptive statistics. The conducted analysis concluded, with respect to the evolution of the destinations tourism that Açores Island is the most prosperous market for the majority of countries, because most countries staid in the zone of Performing market. North, Lisbon and Algarve regions are maturity markets for the most countries, because they stay in Stagnant markets zone. Centre and Alentejo regions could be attributed Emerging markets for the majority of countries once are developing markets. The major market share is occupied by Portugal practically for all regions, except islands. It is also necessary to underline, that the research was made only within two years (2013 and 2014), because of the lack of necessary information in previous years. In the case of Belarus, it could be mentioned, that rural market of this country is developing (but still mostly with neighbour countries), because the number of entities, participating in rural tourism is growing as the number of foreign tourists.

Corredores verdes em Ferreira do Alentejo - a paisagem como infraestrutura

O relatório apresenta o trabalho desenvolvido durante o estágio na Câmara Municipal de Ferreira do Alentejo, objetivado pela obtenção do grau de mestre em Arquitetura Paisagista. Este trabalho pretende valorizar os princípios adquiridos ao longo do percurso académico em licenciatura e mestrado de Arquitetura Paisagista, na ilustre Universidade de Évora, e dar resposta ao objetivo proposto pela entidade acolhedora no presente estágio – a proposta de um percurso potenciador da Paisagem no espaço urbano de Ferreira do Alentejo; ABSTRACT: This report presents the work carried out during the internship at the municipality of Ferreira do Alentejo, which was objectified for obtainment of Master degree in Landscape Architecture. This work aims to enrich the principles acquired during the academic path with the graduation and master degree at the Évora University and to respond to the host institution objective for this internship - the proposal for a landscape enhancer pathway in urban areas of Ferreira do Alentejo.

A evolução do direito de asilo e regimes de proteção a refugiados em Portugal (1975-2015)

Este texto procede a uma análise da legislação e das medidas específicas adotadas sobre o asilo no Portugal democrático, com o objetivo de caracterizar o regime de asilo que vigorou entre 1975 e 2015 e, nomeadamente, apurar se este foi um regime aberto, com uma visão integracionista, ou se foi um regime fechado com uma visão exclusivista. Isto é, se o regime de asilo promoveu uma política ativa de receção e integração de refugiados, ou se, pelo contrário, a política seguida pretendeu limitar o acesso de refugiados às fronteiras do Estado e impor medidas restritivas de forma a excluí-los da integração na sociedade de acolhimento.
