Histomorphometric data were obtained from cats uterine horns: either nulliparous (n = 6), primiparous (n = 6), multiparous (n = 6) and treated with contraceptive (n = 6). The material was collected after surgery, fixed in paraformaldehyde and embedded in paraplast® resin to be sliced in a microtome. The obtained sections were stained with hematoxylin - eosin and measured under a light microscope: uterine wall total thickness (μm), endometrium total height, endometrial glands diameter and glandular epithelia height, total myometrium, internal and external myometrium and vascular layer thickness. It was concluded that: 1 - contraceptive use and number of pregnancies altered the uterine structure, 2 - one pregnancy does not appear to affect the uterine lining structures as occurs in multiparous cats, 3 – there was no variation on the evaluated structures between nulliparous and primiparous cats except for inner myometrium, 4 - the total myometrium hight and the endometrium hight showed similar variations except for the contraceptive treated cats group, 5 - the outer myometrium showed marked changes in the treated cats, 6 – the less marked morphological variations were for the endometrial glands diameter and glandular epithelium hight, 7 - the presence of dilated endometrial glands was found only in treated cats.

The aim of this study was to analyze the behavior of the flow of heat (temperature) through the thickness of panels LVL (Laminated veneer lumber) produced with phenol formaldehyde adhesive, in laboratorial and industrial scales. Experimental program was conducted with five LVL panels (three produced in laboratorial scale and two in industrial scale) with different arrangements of a mix of commercial veneers from tropical pinus from the south region of Sao Paulo State, Brazil, bonded using phenol formaldehyde adhesive. The temperature inside the panels during the pressing process was evaluated using thermocouples type T (cooper-constantan), installed mostly in the center of the glue lines and connected to a data acquisition system. The graphics of temperature as a function of the time showed a gradual increase of temperature up to pre-set values, remaining constant from them. The temperature reached at the center of the panels was adequate to promote the curing of the adhesive. These pre-set values were similar to the minimum values presented by other authors and manufacturers of these adhesives that affirm that temperatures above 100ºC at the center of laminated panels bonded with phenolic adhesives are sufficient to ensure proper cure of the resin. The time necessary for curing of the adhesives confirmed the validity of practical expressions provided by adhesive manufacturers.

Twenty-four postpartum anestrous Nelore purebred cows were used in the study. Anestrous was determined based on the reproductive history which was confirmed in each cow based on plasma progesterone concentration and by transrectal ultrasonography. Endometrial biopsies were collected. The animals were separated into two groups according to maximum follicular diameter- Group 1: follicles <6mm (n=12) and Group 2: follicles >-6mm follicles (n=12). The immunohistochemistry technique was employed to evaluate the presence of estrogen and progesterone receptors in the uterine glandular epithelium and stroma. High counts of positive nuclei and high intensity of immunostain for estrogen and progesterone receptors in the glandular epithelium and stroma were observed in the two groups. However, the immunostain intensity of progesterone receptors in the glandular epithelium was higher in Group 2 compared to Group 1. When glandular epithelium and stroma were compared within each group, the relative number of estrogen receptors in the Group 1 was higher in the glandular epithelium compared to stroma and the immunostain intensity for the progesterone receptor in Group 2 was higher in the glandular epithelium compared to stroma. The results suggest that the mechanisms that control the expression of endomerial receptors in the anestrus are similar to the ones observed during the estrus cycle.

OBJETIVO: Avaliação dos resultados da utilização de enxerto de espessura parcial de esclera autóloga para o tratamento das úlceras esclerais profundas, como complicação tardia da exérese de pterígio associada à betaterapia. MÉTODOS: Foram tratados doze olhos de doze pacientes, nove femininos e três masculinos, com idade variando entre 48 e 82 anos, média 65,2 anos. RESULTADOS: Houve boa integração do enxerto em todos os casos, com resultado funcional e cosmético favorável e sem complicações. CONCLUSÃO: Várias técnicas de enxertia tem sido propostas para o tratamento da úlcera escleral: esclera e dura-máter homólogas, derme, cartilagem auricular e periósteo autólogos. No entanto, o procedimento com esclera autóloga apresenta reais vantagens em relaçâo aos enxertos empregados anteriormente. Não há referências na literatura quanto ao emprego de enxerto de esclera autóloga de espessura parcial para o tratamento da úlcera escleral.

OBJETIVO: Avaliar a influência da espessura do osso cortical sobre a velocidade de propagação do ultrassom (in vitro). MÉTODO: Foram utilizadas 60 lâminas ósseas confeccionadas a partir do fêmur de bovinos, com diferentes espessuras, variando de 1 a 6mm (10 de cada). As medidas da velocidade do ultrassom foram realizadas por aparelho projetado para este fim, utilizando técnica subaquática e por contato direto com auxílio de gel de acoplamento. Os transdutores foram posicionados de duas maneiras diferentes; opostos entre si, com o osso entre eles, sendo a medida chamada de transversal; e, paralelos na mesma superfície cortical, sendo a medida chamada de axial. RESULTADOS: Com o modo de transmissão axial, a velocidade de propagação do ultrassom aumenta conforme a espessura do osso cortical aumenta, independente da distância entre os transdutores, até a espessura de 5mm, mantendo-se constante após. Não houve alteração da velocidade quando o modo de transmissão foi transversal. CONCLUSÃO: A velocidade de propagação do ultrassom aumenta com o aumento da espessura da cortical óssea, no modo de transmissão axial, até o momento em que a espessura supera o comprimento da onda, mantendo a velocidade constante a partir de então. The mantle transition zone is defined by two seismic discontinuities, nominally at 410 and 660 km depth, which result from transformations in the mineral olivine. The topography of these discontinuities provides information about lateral temperature changes in the transition zone. In this work, P-to-S conversions from teleseismic events recorded at 32 broadband stations in the Borborema Province were used to determine the transition zone thickness beneath this region and to investigate whether there are lateral temperature changes within this depth range. For this analysis, stacking and migration of receiver functions was performed. In the Borborema Province, geophysical studies have revealed a geoid anomaly which could reflect the presence of a thermal anomaly related to the origin of intraplate volcanism and uplift that marked the evolution of the Province in the Cenozoic. Several models have been proposed to explain these phenomena, which include those invoking the presence of a deep-seated mantle plume and those invoking shallower sources, such as small-scale convection cells. The results of this work show that no thermal anomalies are present at transition zone depths, as significant variations in the transition zone thickness were not observed. However, regions of depressed topography for both discontinuities (410 and 660 km) that approximately overlap in space were identified, suggesting that lower-thanaverage, lateral variations in seismic velocity above 410 km depth may exist below the the Borborema Province. This is consistent with the presence of a thermally-induced, low-density body independently inferred from analysis of geoid anomalies. Therefore, the magma source responsible for the Cenozoic intraplate volcanism and related uplift in the Province, is likely to be confined above the upper mantle transition zone.

In recent decades, changes in the surface properties of materials have been used to improve their tribological characteristics. However, this improvement depends on the process, treatment time and, primarily, the thickness of this surface film layer. Physical vapor deposition (PVD) of titanium nitrate (TiN) has been used to increase the surface hardness of metallic materials. Thus, the aim of the present study was to propose a numerical-experimental method to assess the film thickness (l) of TiN deposited by PVD. To reach this objective, experimental results of hardness (H) assays were combined with a numerical simulation to study the behavior of this property as a function of maximum penetration depth of the indenter (hmax) into the film/substrate conjugate. Two methodologies were adopted to determine film thickness. The first consists of the numerical results of the H x hmax curve with the experimental curve obtained by the instrumental indentation test. This methodology was used successfully in a TiN-coated titanium (Ti) conjugate. A second strategy combined the numerical results of the Hv x hmax curve with Vickers experimental hardness data (Hv). This methodology was applied to a TiN-coated M2 tool steel conjugate. The mechanical properties of the materials studied were also determined in the present study. The thicknesses results obtained for the two conjugates were compatible with their experimental data.

Os trabalhos publicados sobre estudos relacionados com a obtenção de propriedades da Litosfera na Península Ibérica, indicam uma anomalia na espessura da litosfera no SW da Península referida. Para estes estudos são utilizados valores de altitude , elevação do geóide, anomalias gravíticas e estrutura térmica da região. O trabalho que pretendemos apresentar, consiste em fazer o estudo referido, tendo em conta as características específicas da região em estudo. Serão consideradas as variações de alguns parâmetros na região, como , por exemplo, o fluxo de calor e a profundidade da Moho, tendo em vista a obtenção de informação sobre a estrutura térmica da região e implicações nos resultados dos modelos, nomeadamente na espessura da Litosfera.

O carcinoma do endométrio apresenta uma taxa de incidência em Portugal de cerca de 7.2%, sendo a 5ª neoplasia mais comum na mulher. Apesar de apresentar uma prevalência relativamente elevada, o seu prognóstico global é favorável, uma vez que 75% dos casos são diagnosticados em estádio precoce. O estudo por ressonância magnética é geralmente efectuado após a realização de uma ecografia para avaliação de uma hemorragia uterina anormal e após o diagnóstico histológico por histeroscopia ou ressecção. Contudo, a ressonância magnética pode apresentar um papel determinante no diagnóstico em casos de impossibilidade de biópsia e nos quais a biópsia é inconclusiva. Além do mais, apesar de esta técnica não ser contemplada na classificação para o estadiamento do carcinoma do endométrio da International Federation of Gynecology and Obstetrics de 2009, apresenta uma função fundamental no estadiamento pré-operatório destas doentes, sendo crucial para definir a abordagem cirúrgica e terapêutica. No presente artigo, as autoras descrevem o estado da arte da ressonância magnética funcional no diagnóstico e no estadiamento do carcinoma do endométrio, chamando a atenção para o papel do estudo dinâmico após administração de contraste endovenoso e do estudo ponderado em difusão nestes cenários através da revisão da literatura mais recente sobre este tópico.

Livestock facilities, where animals carry their productive cycle, must have as main characteristic, the control of influence over climatic factors on animals. The environment variations can be controlled through the use of different ventilation systems. The objective of this research was to evaluate the influence of different environment conditioning systems on swine nursery. Three treatments have been tested: natural ventilation, cooled ventilation and forced ventilation. The climatic parameters evaluated were: air temperature, relative humidity and black globe temperature. The physiological parameters analyzed were: respiratory frequency and back fat thickness. Number of born alive piglets, average weight at weaning and number of weaned piglets were also evaluated parameters. The use of cooled ventilation systems were able to decreased animal's air temperature and respiratory frequency, and the black globe temperature and humidity index (WBGT) and the radiating thermal load (RTL).

cDNA arrays are a powerful tool for discovering gene expression patterns. Nylon arrays have the advantage that they can be re-used several times. A key issue in high throughput gene expression analysis is sensitivity. In the case of nylon arrays, signal detection can be affected by the plastic bags used to keep membranes humid. In this study, we evaluated the effect of five types of plastics on the radioactive transmittance, number of genes with a signal above the background, and data variability. A polyethylene plastic bag 69 μm thick had a strong shielding effect that blocked 68.7% of the radioactive signal. The shielding effect on transmittance decreased the number of detected genes and increased the data variability. Other plastics which were thinner gave better results. Although plastics made from polyvinylidene chloride, polyvinyl chloride (both 13 μm thick) and polyethylene (29 and 7 μm thick) showed different levels of transmittance, they all gave similarly good performances. Polyvinylidene chloride and polyethylene 29 mm thick were the plastics of choice because of their easy handling. For other types of plastics, it is advisable to run a simple check on their performance in order to obtain the maximum information from nylon cDNA arrays.
