The formulation of a new process-based crop model, the general large-area model (GLAM) for annual crops is presented. The model has been designed to operate on spatial scales commensurate with those of global and regional climate models. It aims to simulate the impact of climate on crop yield. Procedures for model parameter determination and optimisation are described, and demonstrated for the prediction of groundnut (i.e. peanut; Arachis hypogaea L.) yields across India for the period 1966-1989. Optimal parameters (e.g. extinction coefficient, transpiration efficiency, rate of change of harvest index) were stable over space and time, provided the estimate of the yield technology trend was based on the full 24-year period. The model has two location-specific parameters, the planting date, and the yield gap parameter. The latter varies spatially and is determined by calibration. The optimal value varies slightly when different input data are used. The model was tested using a historical data set on a 2.5degrees x 2.5degrees grid to simulate yields. Three sites are examined in detail-grid cells from Gujarat in the west, Andhra Pradesh towards the south, and Uttar Pradesh in the north. Agreement between observed and modelled yield was variable, with correlation coefficients of 0.74, 0.42 and 0, respectively. Skill was highest where the climate signal was greatest, and correlations were comparable to or greater than correlations with seasonal mean rainfall. Yields from all 35 cells were aggregated to simulate all-India yield. The correlation coefficient between observed and simulated yields was 0.76, and the root mean square error was 8.4% of the mean yield. The model can be easily extended to any annual crop for the investigation of the impacts of climate variability (or change) on crop yield over large areas. (C) 2004 Elsevier B.V. This report describes the analysis and development of novel tools for the global optimisation of relevant mission design problems. A taxonomy was created for mission design problems, and an empirical analysis of their optimisational complexity performed - it was demonstrated that the use of global optimisation was necessary on most classes and informed the selection of appropriate global algorithms. The selected algorithms were then applied to the di®erent problem classes: Di®erential Evolution was found to be the most e±cient. Considering the speci¯c problem of multiple gravity assist trajectory design, a search space pruning algorithm was developed that displays both polynomial time and space complexity. Empirically, this was shown to typically achieve search space reductions of greater than six orders of magnitude, thus reducing signi¯cantly the complexity of the subsequent optimisation. The algorithm was fully implemented in a software package that allows simple visualisation of high-dimensional search spaces, and e®ective optimisation over the reduced search bounds.

Grid connected PhotoVoltaic (PV) inverters fall into three broad categories — Central, String and Module Integrated Converers (MICs). MICs offer any avantaes in performance and flexibility, but are at a cost disadvantage. Two alternative novel approaches proposed by the author — cascaded dc-dc MICs and bypass dc-dc MICs — integrate a simple non-isolated intelligent dc-dc converter with each PV module to provide the advantages of dc-ac MICs at a lower cost. A suitable universal 150W 5A dc-dc converter design is presented based on two interleaved MOSFET half bridges. Testing shows Zero Voltage Switching (ZVS) keeps losses under 1W for bi-directional power flows up to 15W between two adjacent 12V PV modules for the bypass application, and efficiencies over 94% for most of the operational power range for the cascaded converter application. Based on the experimental results, potential optimizations to further reduce losses are discussed.

Previous work by Professor John Frazer on Evolutionary Architecture provides a basis for the development of a system evolving architectural envelopes in a generic and abstract manner. Recent research by the authors has focused on the implementation of a virtual environment for the automatic generation and exploration of complex forms and architectural envelopes based on solid modelling techniques and the integration of evolutionary algorithms, enhanced computational and mathematical models. Abstract data types are introduced for genotypes in a genetic algorithm order to develop complex models using generative and evolutionary computing techniques. Multi-objective optimisation techniques are employed for defining the fitness function in the evaluation process.

This paper compares the performances of two different optimisation techniques for solving inverse problems; the first one deals with the Hierarchical Asynchronous Parallel Evolutionary Algorithms software (HAPEA) and the second is implemented with a game strategy named Nash-EA. The HAPEA software is based on a hierarchical topology and asynchronous parallel computation. The Nash-EA methodology is introduced as a distributed virtual game and consists of splitting the wing design variables - aerofoil sections - supervised by players optimising their own strategy. The HAPEA and Nash-EA software methodologies are applied to a single objective aerodynamic ONERA M6 wing reconstruction. Numerical results from the two approaches are compared in terms of the quality of model and computational expense and demonstrate the superiority of the distributed Nash-EA methodology in a parallel environment for a similar design quality.
