L'objectiu d'aquest treball consisteix a elegir una eina de gestió de continguts per a l'aplicació en la gestió d'un campus virtual. L'estudi de les característiques de diversos dels CMS més emprats ens permetrà, a més, acostar-nos-hi d'una manera pràctica, atès que una part del treball inclou, després de la tria del CMS, la seva instal·lació en un servidor a Internet i la configuració pertinent per a adequar-lo als rols d'administradors, professors, estudiants, etc.

Supportive breeding is an important tool in conservation management, but its long-term genetic consequences are not well understood. Among the factors that could affect the genetics of the offspring is sperm competition as a consequence of mixed-milt fertilizations - which is still a common practice in many hatcheries. Here, we measured and combined the relevant factors to predict the genetic consequences of various kinds of hatchery-induced sperm competition. We drew a random sample of male Coregonus zugensis (an Alpine whitefish) from a hatchery program and quantified their in vitro sperm potency by integrating sperm velocity during the first minute after activation, and their in vitro milt potency by multiplying sperm potency with milt volume and sperm cell density. We found that not controlling for sperm density and/or milt volume would, at a constant population size, decrease the variance effective number of male breeders N-em by around 40-50%. This loss would decrease with increasing population growth rates. Partial multifactorial breeding and the separate rearing of in total 799 batches of eggs revealed that neither sperm nor milt potency was significantly linked to egg survival. Sperm and milt potency was also not significantly correlated to other potential quality measures such as breeding tubercles or condition factor. However, sperm potency was correlated to male age and milt potency to male growth rate. Our findings suggest that hatchery-induced sperm competition not only increases the loss of genetic variation but may also induce artificial selection, depending on the fertilization protocol. By not equalizing milt volume in multi-male fertilization hatchery managers lose relatively more genetic variation and give fast-growing males a reproductive advantage, while equalizing milt volume reduces the loss of genetic variation and favors younger males who may have fast sperm to compensate for their subdominance at the spawning place. Tumoral necrosis factor α plays a central role in both the inflammatory response and that of the immune system. Thus, its blockade with the so-called anti-TNF agents (infliximab, etanercept, adalimumab, certolizumab pegol, and golimumab) has turned into the most important tool in the management of a variety of disorders, such as rheumatoid arthritis, spondyloarthropatties, inflammatory bowel disease, and psoriasis. Nonetheless, theoretically, some other autoimmune disorders may benefit from these agents. Our aim is to review these off-label uses of anti-TNF blockers in three common conditions: Behçet's disease, sarcoidosis, and noninfectious uveitis. Due to the insufficient number of adequate clinical trials and consequently to their lower prevalence compared to other immune disorders, this review is mainly based on case reports and case series.

The qualitative and quantitative losses caused by stored product insects are of great concern, and since there is only a few active ingredients available for their control it is very important to have a frequent insect resistance monitoring. The objective of this research is to evaluate combination of bioassays and molecular marker techniques to detect insecticide resistance in stored product beetles. The Coleoptera species used for the tests were Sitophilus oryzae (L.) (Curculionidae), Rhyzopertha dominica (F.) (Bostrichidae) and Oryzaephilus surinamensis (L.) (Silvanidae). For the bioassays it was used the impregnated filter paper technique, applying 1 mL of deltamethrin (K-Obiol 25 CE TM) using four concentrations and five replicates, including a control with solvent only. Ten adults of each species were liberated separately on each dish. The mortality was evaluated after 24 h and resistance determined by probit analysis. The samples used for the PCR-RAPD were either in vivo or preserved in 70% ethanol, kept in -18°C freezer. After extraction, quantification and DNA quality analysis, the 25 µL samples had the DNA amplified and tested with six primers. The bioassays showed a crescent mortality proportional to insecticide concentration. The resistance factor for R. dominica, S. zeamais and S. oryzae were: 2,2; 3,2 and 9,2, respectively, compared to the susceptible populations of each species. The PCR-RAPD analysis revealed bands which indicate inter and intraspecific variability in the populations, but it was not possible to correlate them to resistance. The association of bioassay and PCR-RAPD represents a precise and valuable tool for resistance management of stored product insects, but more populations and primers should be tested.

A problemática do controlo interno como factor de melhoria empresarial, foi a que orientou esta pesquisa realizada no CEFPSC (Centro de Emprego e Formação Profissional de Santa Cruz). É que, segundo Morais & Martins (2007, pág. 27) existe controlo adequado quando a gestão planeou e organizou, isto é, concebeu, de tal modo que foi assegurado uma garantia razoável que os riscos da organização foram adequadamente geridos e de que os objectivos e metas da organização serão alcançados de forma eficiente e económica. Sendo assim, é de notar a importância desta ferramenta em traçar estratégias de gestão no processo decisório, servindo assim de uma mais-valia à entidade com vista a permitir responder à questão: Em que medida o controlo interno tem sido utilizado como método de apoio à gestão do Centro de Emprego e Formação Profissional de Santa Cruz? Este trabalho tem como objectivo compreender a actuação e a contribuição do Controlo Interno na gestão eficiente do CEFPSC. As informações foram recolhidas mediante a aplicação de um questionário de controlo interno e entrevistas ao Responsável do CEFPSC, bem como ao Presidente do IEFP, enquanto órgão central. O tratamento dos dados foi realizado com auxílio informático, utilizando, para tal, o programa Excel.

Dolphinfish (Coryphaena hippurus) is an epipelagic, highly migratory species distributed worldwide in tropical and temperate waters including the Mediterranean Sea. Protein electrophoresis analyses can provide knowledge of the genetic population structure of the species and therefore be used as a tool for fishery management. Areas sampled include the islands of Majorca and Sicily in the western Mediterranean and the Canary Islands in the eastern Atlantic. The results of the protein electrophoresis reveal a level of genetic variability similar to other highly migratory species. No differences were found among locations, and it was not possible to reject the null hypothesis of one panmictic population in the area studied

Les organitzacions afronten una nova era industrial, la era de la Societat del Coneixement. Als recursos clàssics necessaris per mantenir-se competitiu en un mercat cada cop més exigent (RRHH, recursos naturals, recursos financers, etc.), s'hi ha afegit el recurs del coneixement, associat a les persones que tenen la capacitat d'aportar un elevat valor afegit a les organitzacions. Aquestes persones amb aptitud, actitud i sensibilitat per actuar amb intel·ligència són recursos de talent (RRT) i han de considerar-se un factor clau per qualsevol organització. L'estudi dut a terme sobre l'estat de l'art de la gestió de RRT evidencia la manca d'estratègies en aquest sentit. A més a més, s'han detectat alguns aspectes millorables en l'actual percepció entre informació-empresa. Per tots aquests motius, s'ha dut a terme una nova proposta per entendre la relació informacióempresa i s'ha desenvolupat un model de vigilància de RRT, que hauria de quedar integrat en l'estratègia de Gestió del Coneixement de qualsevol organització. L'estudi inclou també la presentació d'algunes eines de vigilància d'informació, fent incís en les eines de cerca d'informació a Internet, per la seva creixent rellevància. Aquesta nova situació industrial presentarà noves oportunitats de negoci relacionades amb la gestió de RRT, així com obrirà possiblement nous debats ètics sobre la conveniència o no, d'entendre les persones com a un recurs més per a les organitzacions.

The description of the fate of fertilizer-derived nitrogen (N) in agricultural systems is an essential tool to enhance management practices that maximize nutrient use by crops and minimize losses. Soil erosion causes loss of nutrients such as N, causing negative effects on surface and ground water quality, aside from losses in agricultural productivity by soil depletion. Studies correlating the percentage of fertilizer-derived N (FDN) with soil erosion rates and the factors involved in this process are scarce. The losses of soil and fertilizer-derived N by water erosion in soil under conventional tillage and no tillage under different rainfall intensities were quantified, identifying the intervening factors that increase loss. The experiment was carried out on plots (3.5 × 11 m) with two treatments and three replications, under simulated rainfall. The treatments consisted of soil with and soil without tillage. Three successive rainfalls were applied in intervals of 24 h, at intensities of 30 mm/h, 30 mm/h and 70 mm/h. The applied N fertilizer was isotopically labeled (15N) and incorporated into the soil in a line perpendicular to the plot length. Tillage absence resulted in higher soil losses and higher total nitrogen losses (TN) by erosion induced by the rainfalls. The FDN losses followed another pattern, since FDN contributions were highest from tilled plots, even when soil and TN losses were lowest, i.e., the smaller the amount of eroded sediment, the greater the percentage of FDN associated with these. Rain intensity did not affect the FDN loss, and losses were greatest after less intense rainfalls in both treatments.

We have previously demonstrated that measurement of tissue concentration of the novel secretogranin II-derived peptide EM66 may help to discriminate between benign and malignant pheochromocytomas. The aim of the present study was to characterize EM66 in plasma and urine of healthy volunteers and pheochromocytoma patients, in order to further evaluate the usefulness of this peptide as a circulating marker for the management of the tumors. HPLC analysis of plasma and urine samples demonstrated that the EM66-immunoreactive material coeluted with the recombinant peptide. In healthy volunteers, plasma and urinary EM66 levels were, respectively, 2.6 (1.9-3.7) ng/ml and 2.9 (1.9-4.6) ng/ml. In patients with pheochromocytoma, plasma EM66 levels were 10-fold higher than those of healthy volunteers (26.9 (7.3-44) ng/ml), and returned to normal values after removal of the tumor. In contrast, urinary EM66 levels were not significantly different from those of healthy volunteers (3.2 (2.2-3.9) ng/ml). Measurement of total or free plasma metanephrines and 24 hr urinary metanephrines in our series of patients revealed that these tests, taken separately, are less sensitive than the EM66 determination. Pheochromocytes in primary culture secreted high levels of EM66, suggesting that the chromaffin tumor was actually responsible for the increased plasma peptide concentrations in the patients. These data indicate that EM66 is secreted in the general circulation and that elevated plasma EM66 levels are correlated with the occurrence of pheochromocytoma. Thus, EM66 is a sensitive plasma marker that should be considered as a complementary tool in the management of pheochromocytoma.

Epigenetic silencing of the DNA repair protein O(6)-methylguanine-DNA methyltransferase (MGMT) by promoter methylation predicts successful alkylating agent therapy, such as with temozolomide, in glioblastoma patients. Stratified therapy assignment of patients in prospective clinical trials according to tumor MGMT status requires a standardized diagnostic test, suitable for high-throughput analysis of small amounts of formalin-fixed, paraffin-embedded tumor tissue. A direct, real-time methylation-specific PCR (MSP) assay was developed to determine methylation status of the MGMT gene promoter. Assay specificity was obtained by selective amplification of methylated DNA sequences of sodium bisulfite-modified DNA. The copy number of the methylated MGMT promoter, normalized to the beta-actin gene, provides a quantitative test result. We analyzed 134 clinical glioma samples, comparing the new test with the previously validated nested gel-based MSP assay, which yields a binary readout. A cut-off value for the MGMT methylation status was suggested by fitting a bimodal normal mixture model to the real-time results, supporting the hypothesis that there are two distinct populations within the test samples. Comparison of the tests showed high concordance of the results (82/91 [90%]; Cohen's kappa = 0.80; 95% confidence interval, 0.82-0.95). The direct, real-time MSP assay was highly reproducible (Pearson correlation 0.996) and showed valid test results for 93% (125/134) of samples compared with 75% (94/125) for the nested, gel-based MSP assay. This high-throughput test provides an important pharmacogenomic tool for individualized management of alkylating agent chemotherapy.

This research report presents an application of systems theory to evaluating intellectual capital (IC) as organization's ability for self-renewal. As renewal ability is a dynamic capability of an organization as a whole, rather than a static asset or an atomistic competence of separate individuals within the organization, it needs to be understood systemically. Consequently, renewal ability has to be measured with systemic methods that are based on a thorough conceptual analysis of systemic characteristics of organizations. The aim of this report is to demonstrate the theory and analysis methodology for grasping companies' systemic efficiency and renewal ability. The volume is divided into three parts. The first deals with the theory of organizations as self-renewing systems. In the second part, the principles of quantitative analysis of organizations are laid down. Finally, the detailed mathematics of the renewal indices are presented. We also assert that the indices produced by the analysis are an effective tool for the management and valuation of knowledge-intensive companies.

Investoinnit ovat välttämättömiä, jotta yritys voi parantaa asemaansa toimintaympäristössään ja ylläpitää saavutettua kilpailuetua. Siksi investointien kannattavuuden tutkiminen on tärkeää. Reaalioptioiden avulla voidaan hyödyntää tulevaisuuden mahdollisuuksia ja vähentää uhkia, jolloin kannattavuuslaskentaan saadaan uusia näkökulmia. Reaalioptiot ovat strategisen suunnittelun työkaluja. Työssä tutkittiin reaalioptioiden mahdollisuuksia teknologiayrityksen päätöksenteon tukena. Tarkastelu tehtiin kohdeyrityksen näkökulmasta keskittyen informaation tuottamiseen ja reaalioptioiden soveltamiseen kerätyssä aineistossa. Reaalioptiot ovat tärkeitä riskienhallintavälineitä, joiden avulla tulevaisuuden muutokset voidaan ottaa muuttujiksi investointeja arvotettaessa. Reaalioptioiden soveltava käyttö on ollut vielä vähäistä niiden monimutkaisuudesta ja muuttujien hallinnan vaikeudesta johtuen. Reaalioptioita on tutkittu tieteellisessä kirjallisuudessa jo merkittävästi. Suomessa käytännön sovellukset ovat olleet vähäisiä. Reaalioptioiden strategisesta luonteesta johtuen tulokset ovat usein myös salaisia. Tässä työssä käytetään kohdeyrityksen pyynnöstä Case-osuudessa kohteista muutettuja nimiä ja arvoja.
