Direct ion beam deposition of carbon films on silicon in the ion energy range of 15-500 eV and temperature range of 25-800-degrees-C has been studied. The work was carried out using mass-separated C+ and CH3+ ions under ultrahigh vacuum. The films were characterized with x-ray photoelectron spectroscopy, Raman spectroscopy, transmission electron microscopy, and transmission electron diffraction analysis. In the initial stage of the deposition, carbon implanted into silicon induced the formation of silicon carbide, even at room temperature. Further carbon ion bombardment then led to the formation of a carbon film. The film properties were sensitive to the deposition temperature but not to the ion energy. Films deposited at room temperature consisted mainly of amorphous carbon. Deposition at a higher temperature, or post-deposition annealing, led to the formation of microcrystalline graphite. A deposition temperature above 800-degrees-C favored the formation of microcrystalline graphite with a preferred orientation in the (0001) direction. No evidence of diamond formation in these films was observed.

Highly ordered TiO2/Ti nanotube arrays were fabricated by anodic oxidation method in 0.5 wt% HF. Using prepared TiO2/Ti nanotube arrays deposited Ni nanoparticles as substrate, high quality diamond-like carbon nanorods (DLCNRs) were synthesized by a conventional method of chemical vapor deposition at 750 degrees C in nitrogen atmosphere. DLCNRs were analyzed by filed emission scanning electron microscopy and Raman spectrometer. It is very interesting that DLCNRs possess pagoda shape with the length of 3-10 mu m. Raman spectra show two strong peaks about 1332 cm (1) and 1598 cm (1), indicating the formation of diamond-like carbon. The field emission measurements suggest that DLCNRs/TiO2/Ti has excellent field emission properties, a low turn-on field about 3.0 V/mu m, no evident decay at 3.4 mA/cm(2) in 480 min. Stable lipid film was made by casting dipalmitoylphosphatidylcholine (DPPC) and rutin onto the surface of a glassy carbon (GC) electrode. The electrochemical behavior of rutin in the DPPC film was studied. The modified electrode coated with rutin gave quasi-reversible reduction-oxidation peak on cyclic voltammogram in the phosphate buffer (pH 7.4). The peak current did not decrease apparently after stored at 4 degreesC for 8 hours in refrigerator. This model of biological membrane was used to investigate the oxidation of dihydronicotinamide adenine dinucleotide (NADH) by rutin. Rutin in the film acts as a mediator. The modified electrode shows a great enhancement and the anodic peak potential was reduced by about 220 mV in the oxidation of 5 X 10(-3) mol L-1 NADN compared with that obtained at a bare glassy carbon electrode.
