The photo-Fenton process using potassium ferrioxalate as a mediator was investigated for the photodegradation of dichloracetic acid (DCA) and 2,4-dichlorophenol (DCP) in aqueous medium using solar light as source of irradiation. The influence of the solution depth, the light intensity and the effect of stirring the solution during irradiation process were evaluated using DCA as a model compound. A negligible influence of stirring the solution was observed when the concentration of ferrioxalate (FeOx) was 0.8 mM and solution depth was 4.5 or 14 cm. The optimum FeOx concentration determined for solution depths between 4.5 and 14 cm was 0.8 mM considering total organic carbon (TOC) removal during DCA irradiation. The high efficiency of the photo-Fenton process was demonstrated on summer days, when only 10 min of exposition (around noon) were sufficient to completely destroy the organic carbon of a 1.0 mM DCA solution in the presence of 0.8 mM FeOx and 6.0 mM H2O2 using a solution depth of 4.5 cm. It was observed that the photodegradation efficiency increases linearly with the solar light intensity up to values around 15 Wm-2 but this linear relationship does not hold above this value showing a square root dependence. The photodegradation of a solution of DCP/FeOx showed a lower TOC removal rate than that observed for DCA/FeOx, achieving ∼90% after 35 min irradiation under 19 Wm-2, while under this light intensity, the same TOC removal of DCA/FeOx was achieved in only 10 min irradiation. © 2002 Elsevier Science Ltd. Purpose: To investigate the role of mast cells and annexin-A1 (Anxa1) in endotoxin-induced uveitis (EIU). Methods: EIU was induced by injection of lipopolysaccharide (LPS) into the paws of rats, which were then sacrificed after 24 and 48 h. To assess EIU in the absence of mast cells, groups of animals were pretreated with compound 48/80 (c48/80) and sacrificed after 24 h after no treatment or EIU induction. The eyes were used for histological studies and the aqueous humor (AqH) pool was used for the analysis of transmigrated cells and Anxa1 levels. In inflammatory cells, Anxa1 expression was monitored by immunohistochemistry. Results: After 24 h, rats with EIU exhibited degranulated mast cells, associated with elevated numbers of infiltrating leukocytes and the high expression of Anxa1 in the AqH and the neutrophils. After 48 h of EIU, the mast cells were intact, indicating granule re-synthesis, and there was a reduction of neutrophil transmigration and an increase in the number of mononuclear phagocytic cells in ocular tissues. Anxa1 expression was decreased in neutrophils but increased in mononuclear phagocytic cells. In the animals pretreated with c48/80 and subjected to EIU, mast cells responded to this secretagogue by degranulating and few transmigrated neutrophils were observed. Conclustions: We report that mast cells are a potential source of pharmacological mediators that are strongly linked to the pathophysiology of EIU, and the endogenous protein Anxa1 is a mediator in the homeostasis of the inflammatory process with anti-migratory effects on leukocytes, which supports further studies of this protein as an innovative therapy for uveitis. © 2011 Molecular Vision.

Petroleum and derivatives have been considered one of the main environmental contaminants. Among petroleum derivatives, the volatile organic compounds benzene, toluene, ethylbenzene and xylene (BTEX) represent a major concern due to their toxicity and easy accumulation in groundwater. Biodegradation methods seem to be suitable tools for the clean-up of BTEX contaminants from groundwater. Genotoxic and mutagenic potential of BTEX prior and after biodegradation process was evaluated through analyses of chromosomal aberrations and MN test in meristematic and F 1 root cells using the Allium cepa test system. Seeds of A. cepa were germinated into five concentrations of BTEX, non-biodegraded and biodegraded, in ultra-pure water (negative control), in MMS 4×10 -4M (positive control) and in culture medium used in the biodegradation (blank biodegradation control). Results showed a significant frequency of both chromosomal and nuclear aberrations. The micronucleus (MN) frequency in meristematic cells was significant for most of tested samples. However, MN was not present in significant levels in the F 1 cells, suggesting that there was no permanent damage for the meristematic cell. The BTEX effects were significantly reduced in the biodegraded samples when compared to the respective non-biodegraded concentrations. Therefore, in this study, the biodegradation process showed to be a reliable and effective alternative to treat BTEX-contaminated waters. Based on our results and available data, the BTEX toxicity could also be related to a synergistic effect of its compounds. © 2011 Elsevier Ltd.

The present study investigated the osmotic dehydration (OD) of mangoes cv.Palmer, dehydrated in a sucrose solution with added ascorbic acid (AA), aiming toevaluate the influence of the process variables (sucrose concentration, AA concen-tration and time) on vitamin C, water, sugars and total phenolic compound (TPC)contents by way of an analysis of the effects and the variance of the factors. Thesucrose concentration did not affect the vitamin C content, but the AA concentra-tion in the solution and the process time exerted a positive influence on thisresponse. The addition of AA also presented a significant positive effect on theTPC contents because this vitamin interferes with the quantification of the TPC.On discounting the interferences, no losses of phenolic compounds were found.Impregnation with vitamin C during OD was shown to be effective in obtainingminimally processed mangoes with high nutritional value.

Background: Depression and anxiety are psychiatric disorders that are related to tobacco use and associated with dependence, the process of cessation, lapses and relapses after quitting smoking. Objective: To analyze the association of nicotine dependence with the level of anxiety and depression in patients who are in the process of smoking cessation. Methods: Cross-sectional study conducted with patients who sought the smoking cessation program in Cuiabá/MT. All the smokers enrolled from May to August 2012, participated in this study. Four instruments were applied: Socio-demographic Questionnaire, Fagerstrom test, Beck Anxiety Inventory and Beck Depression Inventory. Following bivariate analysis, using the crude prevalence ratio, with level of significance lower than 5% (p < 0.05), having as variable outcome the nicotine dependence >= 5 (Fagerstrom). The associations with p < 0.20 were selected for robust Multiple Poisson Regression (RPa). Results: Associations of Fagerstrom >= 5 with the male sex (RP = 1.15 CI 95% 1.03-1.28); number of cigarettes/day (RP = 1,33; CI 95% 1.19-1.48); and moderate/severe level of depression (RP = 1.15; CI 95% 1.04-1.28) were found. In the final model (RPa), the following variables remained associated: male gender (RPa 1.12; CI 95% 1.01-1.24), number of cigarettes/day (RPa 1.28; CI 95% 1.15-1.43) and high level of depression (RPa 1.12; CI 95% 1.01-1.23). Discussion: High level of nicotine dependence was associated significantly with the level of depression, emphasizing the association between smoking and psychiatric comorbidities.

The elastic properties of a Ti3Al intermetallic compound were studied using full potential (FP LAPW ) with the APW+lo method. The FP-LAPW is among the most accurate band structure calculations currently available and is based on the density functional theory with general gradient approximation for the exchange and correlation potential. This method provides the structural properties of the ground state as bulk modulus, equilibrium lattice parameter, and equilibrium minimum energy, and the elastic properties as shear modulus, young modulus, Zener coefficient (anisotropy), and Poisson coefficient. The calculated elastic properties are coherent with the elastic properties of the material.

NiAl intermetallic compound was synthesized by mechanical alloying technique in planetary and attritor mills. The starting powders consisted of elemental mixtures of Ni and Al at Ni50Al50(at%) composition. In the planetary mill, compound formation occurred gradually during mechanical alloying, while the occurrence of a mechanically induced self-propagating reaction (MSR) can be suggested in the attritor mill. The NiAl obtained in both mill types was partially disordered with long-range order parameter not inferior to 0.66. Quantitative phase analysis using the Rietveld method was performed in as-milled samples, and this method was also employed to estimate changes in crystallite size and lattice strain of the NiAl produced during mechanical alloying. Nanoparticles were prepared from a NdFeB-based alloy using the hydrogen decrepitation process together with high-energy ball milling and tested as heating agent for magnetic hyperthermia. In the milling time range evaluated (up to 10 h), the magnetic moment per mass at H = 1.59 MA m(-1) is superior than 70 A m(2) kg(-1); however, the intrinsic coercivity might be inferior than 20 kA m(-1). The material presents both ferromagnetic and superparamagnetic particles constituted by a mixture of phases due to the incomplete disproportionation reaction of Nd2Fe14BHx during milling. Solutions prepared with deionized water and magnetic particles exposed to an AC magnetic field (H-max similar to 3.7 kA m(-1) and f = 228 kHz) exhibited 26 K <= Delta T-max <= 44 K with a maximum estimated specific absorption rate (SAR) of 225 W kg(-1). For the pure magnetic material milled for the longest period of time (10 h), the SAR was estimated as similar to 2500 W kg(-1). In vitro tests indicated that the powders have acceptable cytotoxicity over a wide range of concentration (0.1-100 mu g ml(-1)) due to the coating applied during milling.

CO((NH2)-N-15)(2) enriched with the stable isotope N-15 was synthesized based on a reaction involving CO, (NH3)-N-15, and S in the presence of CH3OH. The method differs from the industrial method; a stainless steel reactor internally lined with polytetrafluoroethylene (PTFE) was used in a discontinuous process under low pressure and temperature. The yield of the synthesis was evaluated as a function of the parameters: the amount of reagents, reaction time, addition of H2S, liquid solution and reaction temperature. The results showed that under optimum conditions (1.36, 4.01, and 4.48 g of (NH3)-N-15, CO, and S, respectively, 40 ml CH3OH, 40 mg H2S, 100 degrees C and 120 min of reaction) 1.82 g (yield 76.5%) of the compound was obtained per batch. The synthesized CO((NH2)-N-15)(2) contained 46.2% N, 0.55% biuret, melting point of 132.55 degrees C and did not exhibit isotopic fractionation. The production cost of CO((NH2)-N-15)(2) with 90.0 at. % N-15 was US$ 238.60 per gram.

In this paper, we propose a random intercept Poisson model in which the random effect is assumed to follow a generalized log-gamma (GLG) distribution. This random effect accommodates (or captures) the overdispersion in the counts and induces within-cluster correlation. We derive the first two moments for the marginal distribution as well as the intraclass correlation. Even though numerical integration methods are, in general, required for deriving the marginal models, we obtain the multivariate negative binomial model from a particular parameter setting of the hierarchical model. An iterative process is derived for obtaining the maximum likelihood estimates for the parameters in the multivariate negative binomial model. Residual analysis is proposed and two applications with real data are given for illustration. (C) 2011 Elsevier B.V. All rights reserved.

Chrysin is one of the natural flavonoids present in plants, and large amounts are present in honey and propolis. In addition to anticancer, antioxidation, and anti-inflammatory activities, chrysin has also been reported to be an inhibitor of aromatase, an enzyme converting testosterone into estrogen. The present study evaluated the mutagenicity of this flavonoid using micronucleus (MN) with HepG2 cells and Salmonella. Cell survival after exposure to different concentrations of chrysin was also determined using sulforhodamine B (SRB) colorimetric assay in HepG2 cells and the influence of this flavonoid on growth of cells in relation to the cell cycle and apoptosis. TheMN test showed that from 1 to 15 mu M of this flavonoid mutagenic activity was noted in HepG2 cells. The Salmonella assay demonstrated a positive response to the TA100 Salmonella strain in the presence or absence of S9, suggesting that this compound acted on DNA, inducing base pair substitution before or after metabolism via cytochrome P-450. The SRB assay illustrated that chrysin promoted growth inhibition of HepG2 cells in both periods studied (24 and 48 h). After 24 h of exposure it was noted that the most significant results were obtained with a concentration of 50 mu M, resulting in 83% inhibition and SubG0 percentage of 12%. After 48 h of incubation cell proliferation inhibition rates (97% at 50 mu M) were significantly higher. Our results showed that chrysin is a mutagenic and cytotoxic compound in cultured human HepG2 cells and Salmonella typhimurium. Although it is widely accepted that flavonoids are substances beneficial to health, one must evaluate the risk versus benefit relationship and concentrations of these substances to which an individual may be exposed.
