Risk assessment in open innovation networks

Innovation is considered crucial for enterprises survival and current economic environment demands the best ways of achieving it. However, the development of complex products and services require the utilization of diverse know-how and technology, which enterprises may not hold. An effective strategy for achieving them is to rely in open innovation. Still, open innovation projects may fail for many causes, e.g. due to the dynamics of collaboration between partners. To effectively benefit from open innovation, it is recommended the utilization of adequate risk models. For achieving such models, a preliminary conceptualization of open innovation and risk is necessary, which includes modeling experiments with existing risk models, such as the FMEA.

Innovation from Academia-Industry symbiosis

Anchored on a systemic perspective of innovation and particularly on the triple helix model, which highlights the state, university and companies as central players, this paper aims to discuss the factors that enable or constrain the processes of innovation, using the system thinking approach to understand the academia-industry symbiosis. The paper's empirical section is based on a case study on Portugal's major highway management concessionaire. In order to ensure a "healthy" co-innovation environment, the archetype studied emphasizes the need to implement coordination mechanisms such as communication routines and metrics to monitor collaborative behavior in addition to the need to develop global goals that align the efforts of the partners.

Finding a school technological partner: a multicriteria method for school information system producer selection

The choice of an information systems is a critical factor of success in an organization's performance, since, by involving multiple decision-makers, with often conflicting objectives, several alternatives with aggressive marketing, makes it particularly complex by the scope of a consensus. The main objective of this work is to make the analysis and selection of a information system to support the school management, pedagogical and administrative components, using a multicriteria decision aid system – MMASSITI – Multicriteria Method- ology to Support the Selection of Information Systems/Information Technologies – integrates a multicriteria model that seeks to provide a systematic approach in the process of choice of Information Systems, able to produce sustained recommendations concerning the decision scope. Its application to a case study has identi- fied the relevant factors in the selection process of school educational and management information system and get a solution that allows the decision maker’ to compare the quality of the various alternatives.

Accommodation management system using mobile devices

Os dispositivos móveis são pessoais, intransmissíveis e cada vez mais utilizados, tornando-se assim numa boa ferramenta para a realização de um conjunto de serviços na indústria hoteleira. Entre esses serviços que necessitam da identificação pessoal, encontram-se a possibilidade do cliente reservar um quarto ou utilizar o serviço de quartos. Atualmente é muito utilizado, nos locais de alojamento, um smart card que possibilite ao cliente ter acesso a alguns dos serviços disponíveis. O objetivo deste documento é apresentar uma alternativa ao sistema de cartões, utilizando para o efeito, dispositivos móveis. De modo a garantir a segurança e uma utilização semelhante ao sistema de cartões existentes foi utilizada a tecnologia NFC (Near Field Communication) que, ao permitir o modo de emulação de cartão, facilita a transação do sistema de smart card existente, para o da utilização de dispositivos móveis na realização das mesmas funções. Mais concretamente, será abordada a utilização de smartphones para o processo de abertura de portas. Para que exista uma melhor compreensão e para que haja um conhecimento das suas capacidades e limites foram estudados casos de uso da tecnologia NFC. Este documento apresenta ainda os processos de desenvolvimento de uma aplicação nativa para o sistema operativo Android, cujo objetivo é proporcionar ao cliente de um local de alojamento um novo modo de acesso ao quarto, utilizando a tecnologia NFC. Para além desta funcionalidade a aplicação permite ainda ao utilizador fazer reservas, fazer o check-in, fazer o check-out entre outras. Posteriormente serão apresentadas as conclusões e possíveis trabalhos futuros.

Convergence of Smart Grid ICT architectures for the last mile

The evolution of the electrical grid into a smart grid, allowing user production, storage and exchange of energy, remote control of appliances, and in general optimizations over how the energy is managed and consumed, is also an evolution into a complex Information and Communication Technology (ICT) system. With the goal of promoting an integrated and interoperable smart grid, a number of organizations all over the world started uncoordinated standardization activities, which caused the emergence of a large number of incompatible architectures and standards. There are now new standardization activities which have the goal of organizing existing standards and produce best practices to choose the right approach(es) to be employed in specific smart grid designs. This paper follows the lead of NIST and ETSI/CEN/CENELEC approaches in trying to provide taxonomy of existing solutions; our contribution reviews and relates current ICT state-of-the-art, with the objective of forecasting future trends based on the orientation of current efforts and on relationships between them. The resulting taxonomy provides guidelines for further studies of the architectures, and highlights how the standards in the last mile of the smart grid are converging to common solutions to improve ICT infrastructure interoperability.

Message-oriented middleware for smart grids

In order to increase the efficiency in the use of energy resources, the electrical grid is slowly evolving into a smart(er) grid that allows users' production and storage of energy, automatic and remote control of appliances, energy exchange between users, and in general optimizations over how the energy is managed and consumed. One of the main innovations of the smart grid is its organization over an energy plane that involves the actual exchange of energy, and a data plane that regards the Information and Communication Technology (ICT) infrastructure used for the management of the grid's data. In the particular case of the data plane, the exchange of large quantities of data can be facilitated by a middleware based on a messaging bus. Existing messaging buses follow different data management paradigms (e.g.: request/response, publish/subscribe, data-oriented messaging) and thus satisfy smart grids' communication requirements at different extents. This work contributes to the state of the art by identifying, in existing standards and architectures, common requirements that impact in the messaging system of a data plane for the smart grid. The paper analyzes existing messaging bus paradigms that can be used as a basis for the ICT infrastructure of a smart grid and discusses how these can satisfy smart grids' requirements.

Ensinar ciências a alunos com incapacidade intelectual recorrendo ao software Scratch: um estudo de caso

Este estudo procura a valorização do ensino dirigido a alunos com Incapacidade Intelectual. Tem como objetivos conceber um recurso didático, integrando as ferramentas do Scratch, para alunos com Incapacidade Intelectual; averiguar a exequibilidade do uso desse recurso em ambiente natural de ensino e promover o envolvimento de alunos com Incapacidade Intelectual na realização de tarefas propostas na disciplina de Ciências da Natureza. Pretendemos dar resposta às seguintes questões de investigação: (1) A utilização do Scratch é adequada e exequível no trabalho quotidiano de alunos com Incapacidade Intelectual? (2) Em que medida o Scratch pode contribuir para um melhor envolvimento dos alunos com Incapacidade Intelectual na realização das tarefas propostas? Para este efeito, planificamos duas aulas. Na primeira, abordou-se o conteúdo a tratar – Poluição – e na segunda aula utilizou-se o Scratch, desafiando os alunos a desenvolverem diversas tarefas de forma mais ativa. O presente estudo segue uma abordagem metodológica de natureza qualitativa, centrando-se num estudo de caso, onde se aborda a importância do uso das Tecnologias de Informação e Comunicação, mais concretamente o software educativo Scratch, como sendo uma ferramenta potenciadora do envolvimento dos alunos. Este estudo foi aplicado a três alunos com Incapacidade Intelectual que tinham sido atribuídos à docente investigadora no presente ano letivo. Os dados foram recolhidos através da análise dos Programas Educativos Individuais dos alunos participantes; da entrevista realizada à docente de Educação Especial; de gravações áudio, de fotografias, de trabalhos realizados pelos alunos participantes e de notas de campo da investigadora. Foi centralidade do estudo a conceção de uma proposta didática e o desenvolvimento dos respetivos recursos, utilizando o software educativo Scratch. Quer a proposta didática quer os recursos a ela associados constituem em si mesmo parte dos resultados do trabalho desenvolvido. Os dados obtidos neste estudo permitem sustentar a ideia de que é possível trabalhar com alunos com Necessidades Educativas Especiais, nomeadamente Incapacidade Intelectual, recorrendo ao software educativo Scratch e que o uso desta ferramenta proporcionou um maior envolvimento e autonomia dos alunos nas tarefas propostas.

Vehicle-to-anything application (v2anything app) for electric vehicles

This paper presents a mobile information system denominated as Vehicle-to-Anything Application (V2Anything App), and explains its conceptual aspects. This application is aimed at giving relevant information to Full Electric Vehicle (FEV) drivers, by supporting the integration of several sources of data in a mobile application, thus contributing to the deployment of the electric mobility process. The V2Anything App provides recommendations to the drivers about the FEV range autonomy, location of battery charging stations, information of the electricity market, and also a route planner taking into account public transportations and car or bike sharing systems. The main contributions of this application are related with the creation of an Information and Communication Technology (ICT) platform, recommender systems, data integration systems, driver profile, and personalized range prediction. Thus, it is possible to deliver relevant information to the FEV drivers related with the electric mobility process, electricity market, public transportation, and the FEV performance.
