Frecuencia de hipertensión arterial en los adultos mayores de las parroquias urbanas de Cuenca-Ecuador, 2015

Introducción: A nivel mundial la población de adultos mayores se incrementa, Ecuador no se queda fuera de esta transición demográfica y así aumentan también todas las enfermedades asociadas con la edad, principalmente la hipertensión arterial. Objetivo: Determinar la frecuencia de hipertensión arterial en adultos mayores de las parroquias urbanas de la ciudad de Cuenca, 2015. Metodología: Se realizó un estudio descriptivo en una muestra de 378 adultos mayores. Fueron hipertensos aquellos pacientes que tengan dos tomas de presión arterial separadas como mínimo una semana en las cuales la presión arterial sistólica sea >o= a 140 mmHg y presión arterial diastólica >o= a 90 mmHg. Se clasificó según parámetros sociodemográficos, antecedentes familiares, estado nutricional y actividad física. El muestreo fue de las zonas censales de cada parroquia, se usó un muestreo aleatorio simple. Los datos fueron analizados en el programa SPSS versión 15.0, utilizando distribución de frecuencias, medidas de tendencia central: media y medidas de dispersión: desvió estándar. Resultados: la frecuencia de hipertensión arterial fue 52,5%. El 65,1% de hipertensos fueron mujeres y el 34.9% hombres. El 57,6% de hipertensos fueron estuvieron entre los 65 y 74 años. El 41,2% tenía instrucción primaria completa. El 76,4% no tenía una ocupación laboral. El 51,2% no tenía antecedentes familiares de HTA. El 40% realizaba actividad física moderada. El 41,9% presentó obesidad. Conclusión: la frecuencia de hipertensión arterial en los adultos mayores de las parroquias urbanas de la ciudad de Cuenca fue del 52,5%

Feeding level and frequency for freshwater angelfish

The objective of this study was to determine the optimal feeding level and feeding frequency for the culture of freshwater angelfish (Pterophyllum scalare). A randomized block design in a factorial scheme (3 × 2) with three feeding levels (30, 60 and 90 g/kg of body weight (BW)/day) and two feeding frequencies (1x and 2x/day) was set up in duplicate, representing 24 experimental units. Data were analyzed using two-way ANOVA and the Tukey test for comparison between means. After 84 days, results indicated that both factors influenced fish performance. No interaction between these factors was, however, observed. Increased feeding level and feeding frequency resulted in increased feed intake. The feed conversion ratio was negatively affected by feeding level, but not affected by feeding frequency. Final weights were higher when fish were fed twice daily, at levels of 60 or 90 g/kg BW/day. Specific growth rate was higher when fish received 60 or 90 g/kg BW/day, regardless of the feeding frequency. Survival was not affected by any treatment, with mean survival rates higher than 90%. It is recommended that juveniles be fed at a level of 60 g/kg BW/day with a minimum of two meals per day, to attain optimal survival, growth and feed efficiency.

Transcript: New York Jan. 14. 1813. My dear uncle, I had nearly concluded to have made my [jaunt?] earlier than I had mentioned in my last letter to you, for Swartout had intended to have written by me to Father & yourself; having [Louisa?] concluded not so soon to depart he sends me his letters which I forward in mail, I shall hope to have letters from home soon, it is a great pleasure to hear from any of you. I said last week in Hollands letter mentioning [bladeworth?] account, I have explained to him. It is a mistake about me agreeing to pay Mr. [Dening?] [their?] account. Caroline mentions to me your jaunt to [Sophia?], but I regret our friend there should be unpleasantly situated. I have not yet seen Col. Willett but will see him as mentioned. I have neglected to go there for some time which has been remiss in me. We have nothing new I believe unless it be that Armstrong & Jones of Philadelphia have been nominated as Secretarys of War & the Navy & [cer?] this in all probability may be appointed. There may be room for speculation, but perhaps it is not probable that Canada will be ceded to American Valor in the year 1813. There is a Bill before congress by which it may be made penal to enter on board American vessels, either British subjects or naturalized Americans, which it is presoomed by many will [spon?] the accommodation of Peace – may be yes may be no – the proof of the pudding is in the eating of it. I imagine pacification is not so near at hand although it is much to be desired. Whatever might be for the honor & prosperity of the Country I would strenuously advocate, aloof from partial & party considerations. We have not a word as yet what the Council at Albany may be thinking of as yet. I suppose these things will come in time, perhaps untimely to many. Samuel Avon Smith Diary- Accession 284 - M121 (154)

The Samuel Avon Smith Diary is a journal written Samuel Avon Smith who was a Confederate soldier during the American Civil War (Company H, 5th Regiment, SC) and a doctor. The journal was written from ca. 1830-1876 or beyond (some pages have been destroyed). The first part is a reminiscence of his life from 1830 to ca. 1873 and from that point on he gives a monthly account of life in Bullock’s Creek, SC. Subjects covered in the journal are the battles of Manassas and Seven Pines, Confederate Troops at Leesburg, the reorganization of the Confederate Army, the march to Richmond, the conditions of the troops, wounds received at the battle of Seven Pines and his medical treatment at the Confederate hospital in Manchester, Virginia, his education at the Ebenezer Academy and the Medical College of SC in Charleston; his life, practice, and health conditions in Gaston County, NC, Lincoln County, NC, and in Bullock’s Creek, SC; and sentiments towards the reconstruction government and Ku Klux Klan. There is also mention of a conflict between Blacks and Whites in Chester County, SC in 1871.

Butler's accounts for the Classes of 1789-1794, 1789-1799

The marbled-paper-covered book contains two sections written by Butlers Thomas Adams and Samuel Shapleigh: a two column debit and credit entry section for students in the Classes of 1789 through 1794, with additions made through June 1791, and at the end of the volume a two page "Account of monies paid out as Atty. to T. Adams" for 1791 with lenders' names and amounts.

Library catalogue notes of Isaac Smith, ca. 1789

Thirteen slips of paper with fragments of handwritten alphabetical lists created by Isaac Smith presumably in his capacity as Harvard Librarian. Most of the entries are surnames or single-word subjects. For example, one slip with "M" entries includes: milway, miracles, miraculous, Mitchell, and Mitchell. Some of the lists have struck-through words or have entries annotated with numbers and the abbreviations "o" and "bk." The verso of one leaf has a brief, undated note regarding the transfer of books between Mr. Hilliard and Mr. Smith.
