The generation of the third and fourth harmonics from the interaction of a 1 ps, ultraviolet (UV), krypton fluoride (KrF) laser with a solid surface is investigated. The conversion efficiency is seen to increase linearly with I lambda(2), with a transition from specular harmonic emission to emission into 2 pi steradians occurring between 10(15) and 10(16) W cm(-2) mu m(2). The diffuse emission is strongly dependent on the incidence angle of the laser, with the peak in emission at around 30 degrees being consistent with measurements for resonance absorption. Finally, the conversion efficiencies are found to be in agreement with particle-in-cell (PIC) simulations including appropriate density scalelengths. (C) 1998 Elsevier Science B.V.

The effect of simulated hyperglycaemia on bovine retinal pericytes was studied following culture of these cells for 10 days under normal (5 mmol/l) and elevated (25 mmol/l) glucose conditions in the absence of endothelial cells. Pericytes cultured under high ambient glucose exhibited both a delayed and reduced contractile response following stimulation with endothelin-1. Stimulation with 10(-7) mol/l endothelin-1 for 30 s caused significant contraction in cells grown in both 5 mmol/l and 25 mmol/l glucose. The former also contracted significantly with 10(-8) mol/l endothelin-1. Further, at all concentrations tested, statistical comparison of the time course of contraction showed a significant difference (p 0.1) between bovine retinal pericytes grown for 10 days under normo- or hyperglycaemic conditions, it became apparent that the altered contractility in bovine retinal pericytes following culture in high glucose must be due to post-binding intracellular disturbance(s). Indeed, both basal and 15 s post-stimulation with 10(-8) mol/l endothelin-1, levels of inositol trisphosphate were significantly reduced (p

We experimentally demonstrate a new regime of high-order harmonic generation by relativistic-irradiance lasers in gas jet targets. Bright harmonics with both odd and even orders, generated by linearly as well as circularly polarized pulses, are emitted in the forward direction, while the base harmonic frequency is downshifted. A 9 TW laser generates harmonics up to 360 eV, within the 'water window' spectral region. With a 120 TW laser producing 40 uJ/sr per harmonic at 120 eV, we demonstrate the photon number scalability. The observed harmonics cannot be explained by previously suggested scenarios. A novel high-order harmonics generation mechanism [T. Zh. Esirkepov et al., AIP Proceedings, this volume], which explains our experimental findings, is based on the phenomena inherent in the relativistic laser - underdense plasma interactions (self-focusing, cavity evacuation, and bow wave generation), mathematical catastrophe theory which explains formation of electron density singularities (cusps), and collective radiation due to nonlinear oscillations of a compact charge.

We have developed the capability to determine accurate harmonic spectra for multielectron atoms within time-dependent R-matrix (TDRM) theory. Harmonic spectra can be calculated using the expectation value of the dipole length, velocity, or acceleration operator. We assess the calculation of the harmonic spectrum from He irradiated by 390-nm laser light with intensities up to 4 x 10(14) W cm(-2) using each form, including the influence of the multielectron basis used in the TDRM code. The spectra are consistent between the different forms, although the dipole acceleration calculation breaks down at lower harmonics. The results obtained from TDRM theory are compared with results from the HELIUM code, finding good quantitative agreement between the methods. We find that bases which include pseudostates give the best comparison with the HELIUM code, but models comprising only physical orbitals also produce accurate results.

The basic concepts and phenomenology of wave mixing and harmonic generation are reviewed in context of the recent advances in the enhanced nonlinear activity in metamaterials and photonic crystals. The effects of dispersion, field confinement and phase synchronism are illustrated by the examples of the on-purpose designed artificial nonlinear structures. (c) 2012 Wiley Periodicals, Inc. We investigate harmonic generation (HG) from ground-state Ar+ aligned with M=1 at a laser wavelength of 390 nm and intensity of 4×1014Wcm−2. Using time-dependent R-matrix theory, we find that an initial state with magnetic quantum number M=1 provides a fourfold increase in harmonic yield over M=0. HG arises primarily from channels associated with the 3Pe threshold of Ar2+, in contrast with M=0 for which channels associated with the excited, 1De threshold dominate HG. Multichannel and multielectron interferences lead to a more marked suppression of HG for M=1 than M=0.

We apply the time-dependent R-matrix method to investigate harmonic generation from Ne+ at a wavelength of 390 nm and intensities up to 1015 W cm−2. The 1s22s22p4 (3Pe,1De, and 1Se) states of Ne2+ are included as residual-ion states to assess the influence of interference between photoionization channels associated with these thresholds. The harmonic spectrum is well approximated by calculations in which only the 3Pe and 1De thresholds are taken into account, but no satisfactory spectrum is obtained when a single threshold is taken into account. Within the harmonic plateau, extending to about 100 eV, individual harmonics can be suppressed at particular intensities when all Ne2+ thresholds are taken into account. The suppression is not observed when only a single threshold is accounted for. Since the suppression is dependent on intensity, it may be difficult to observe experimentally.

We demonstrate the capability of ab initio time-dependent R-matrix theory to obtain accurate harmonic generation spectra of noble-gas atoms at near-IR wavelengths between 1200 and 1800 nm and peak intensities up to 1.8 × 10^(14) W/cm^(2). To accommodate the excursion length of the ejected electron, we use an angular-momentum expansion up to Lmax=279. The harmonic spectra show evidence of atomic structure through the presence of a Cooper minimum in harmonic generation for Kr, and of multielectron interaction through the giant resonance for Xe. The theoretical spectra agree well with those obtained experimentally.

High-order harmonics and attosecond pulses of light can be generated when ultraintense, ultrashort laser pulses reflect off a solid-density plasma with a sharp vacuum interface, i.e., a plasma mirror. We demonstrate experimentally the key influence of the steepness of the plasma-vacuum interface on the interaction, by measuring the spectral and spatial properties of harmonics generated on a plasma mirror whose initial density gradient scale length L is continuously varied. Time-resolved interferometry is used to separately measure this scale length.

Harmonic generation in the limit of ultrasteep density gradients is studied experimentally. Observations reveal that, while the efficient generation of high order harmonics from relativistic surfaces requires steep plasma density scale lengths (L-p/lambda <1), the absolute efficiency of the harmonics declines for the steepest plasma density scale length L-p -> 0, thus demonstrating that near-steplike density gradients can be achieved for interactions using high-contrast high-intensity laser pulses. Absolute photon yields are obtained using a calibrated detection system. The efficiency of harmonics reflected from the laser driven plasma surface via the relativistic oscillating mirror was estimated to be in the range of 10(-4)-10(-6) of the laser pulse energy for photon energies ranging from 20-40 eV, with the best results being obtained for an intermediate density scale length.

Attosecond science is enabled by the ability to convert femtosecond near-infrared laser light into coherent harmonics in the extreme ultraviolet spectral range. While attosecond sources have been utilized in experiments that have not demanded high intensities, substantially higher photon flux would provide a natural link to the next significant experimental breakthrough. Numerical simulations of dual-gas high harmonic generation indicate that the output in the cutoff spectral region can be selectively enhanced without disturbing the single-atom gating mechanism. Here, we summarize the results of these simulations and present first experimental findings to support these predictions. (c) 2012 Optical Society of America
