This study aims to develop and implement a tool called intelligent tutoring system in an online course to help a formative evaluation in order to improve student learning. According to Bloom et al. (1971,117) formative evaluation is a systematic evaluation to improve the process of teaching and learning. The intelligent tutoring system may provide a timely and high quality feedback that not only informs the correctness of the solution to the problem, but also informs students about the accuracy of the response relative to their current knowledge about the solution. Constructive and supportive feedback should be given to students to reveal the right and wrong answers immediately after taking the test. Feedback about the right answers is a form to reinforce positive behaviors. Identifying possible errors and relating them to the instructional material may help student to strengthen the content under consideration. The remedial suggestion should be given in each answer with detaileddescription with regards the materials and instructional procedures before taking next step. The main idea is to inform students about what they have learned and what they still have to learn. The open-source LMS called Moodle was extended to accomplish the formative evaluation, high-quality feedback, and the communal knowledge presented here with a short online financial math course that is being offered at a large University in Brazil. The preliminary results shows that the intelligent tutoring system using high quality feedback helped students to improve their knowledge about the solution to the problems based on the errors of their past cohorts. The results and suggestion for future work are presented and discussed.

At large, research universities, a common approach for teaching hundreds of undergraduate students at one time is the traditional, large, lecture-based course. Trends indicate that over the next decade there will be an increase in the number of large, campus courses being offered as well as larger enrollments in courses currently offered. As universities investigate alternative means to accommodate more students and their learning needs, Web-based instruction provides an attractive delivery mode for teaching large, on-campus courses. This article explores a theoretical approach regarding how Web-based instruction can be designed and developed to provide quality education for traditional, on-campus, undergraduate students. The academic debate over the merit of Web-based instruction for traditional, on-campus students has not been resolved. This study identifies and discusses instructional design theory for adapting a large, lecture-based course to the Web.

In recent years, education authorities worldwide, including the German Federal Government, have invested heavily in the development of e-learning and multimedia materials for institutions of higher learning. While for some subject matters the benefits of e-learning seem obvious, there are subjects, often consisting of a number of tenuously connected topics or requiring a balance of learning and training, for which it is a valid question whether appropriate learning materials can be presented via the Internet. Software Engineering belongs to this second group, both for its broad collection of topics and, particularly, for the required emphasis on teamwork and communication training.

Today, Digital Systems and Services for Technology Supported Learning and Education are recognized as the key drivers to transform the way that individuals, groups and organizations “learn” and the way to “assess learning” in 21st Century. These transformations influence: Objectives - moving from acquiring new “knowledge” to developing new and relevant “competences”; Methods – moving from “classroom” based teaching to “context-aware” personalized learning; and Assessment – moving from “life-long” degrees and certifications to “on-demand” and “in-context” accreditation of qualifications. Within this context, promoting Open Access to Formal and Informal Learning, is currently a key issue in the public discourse and the global dialogue on Education, including Massive Open Online Courses (MOOCs) and Flipped School Classrooms. This volume on Digital Systems for Open Access to Formal and Informal Learning contributes to the international dialogue between researchers, technologists, practitioners and policy makers in Technology Supported Education and Learning. It addresses emerging issues related with both theory and practice, as well as, methods and technologies that can support Open Access to Formal and Informal Learning. In the twenty chapters contributed by international experts who are actively shaping the future of Educational Technology around the world, topics such as: - The evolution of University Open Courses in Transforming Learning - Supporting Open Access to Teaching and Learning of People with Disabilities - Assessing Student Learning in Online Courses - Digital Game-based Learning for School Education - Open Access to Virtual and Remote Labs for STEM Education - Teachers’ and Schools’ ICT Competence Profiling - Web-Based Education and Innovative Leadership in a K-12 International School Setting are presented. An in-depth blueprint of the promise, potential, and imminent future of the field, Digital Systems for Open Access to Formal and Informal Learning is necessary reading for researchers and practitioners, as well as, undergraduate and postgraduate students, in educational technology.

Purpose of the study. This study had two components. The first component of the study was the development and implementation of an infrastructure that integrated Promotores who teach diabetes self-management into a community clinic. The second component was a six-month randomized clinical trial (RCT) designed to test the effectiveness of the Promotores in changing knowledge, beliefs, and HbA1c levels among Mexican American patients with type 2 diabetes. ^ Methods. Starfield's adaptation of the Donbedian structure, process, and outcome methodology was used to develop a clinic infrastructure that allowed the integration of Promotores as diabetes educators. The RCT of the culturally sensitive Promotores-led 10-week diabetes self-management program compared the outcomes of 63 patients in the intervention group with 68 patients in a wait-list, usual care control group. Participants were Mexican Americans, at least 18 years of age, with type 2 diabetes, who were patients at a Federally Qualified Health Center on the Texas-Mexico border. At baseline, three months, and six months, data were collected using the Diabetes Knowledge Questionnaire (DKQ, the Health Beliefs Questionnaire (HBQ, and HbA1c levels were drawn by the clinic laboratory. A mixed model methodology was used to analyze the data. ^ Results. The infrastructure to support a Promotores-led diabetes self-management course designed in concert with administration, the physicians, and the CDE, resulted in (1) employment of Promotores to teach diabetes self-management courses; (2) integration of provider and nurse oversight of course design and implementation; (3) management of Promotora training, and the development of teaching competencies and skills; (4) coordination of care through communication and documentation policies and procedures; (5) utilization of quality control mechanisms to maintain patient safety; and (6) promotion of a culturally competent approach to the educational process. The RCT resulted in a significant improvement in the intervention group's DKQ scores over time (F [1, 129] = 4.77, p = 0.0308), and in treatment by time (F [2, 168] = 5.85, p = 0.0035). Neither the HBQ scores nor the HbA1c changed over time. However, the baseline HbA1c was 7.49, almost at the therapeutic level. The DKQ, HBQ, and HbA1c results were significantly affected by age; the DKQ and HbA1c by years with diabetes. ^ Conclusions. The clinic model provides a systematic approach to safely address the educational needs of large numbers of patients with type 2 diabetes who live in communities that suffer from a lack of health care professionals. The Promotores-led diabetes self-management course improved the knowledge of patients with diabetes and may be a culturally sensitive strategy for meeting patient educational needs. The low baseline HbA1c levels in this border community suggested that patients in this Federally Qualified Health Center on the Texas-Mexico border were experiencing good medical management of their diabetes. ^

The unprecedented attacks of September 11, 2001, and the subsequent anthrax-related events thrust our nation's often forgotten public health system into the forefront of public attention. A strong public health system with a well-prepared workforce plays a critical role in preparing for and responding to the threat of bioterrorism and other disasters and emergencies. Technical expertise is critical as is a basic awareness and understanding of core public health competencies especially as they relate to disaster and emergency response is also imperative for a public health agency to function as a vital Emergency Response team member. Ideally this training should begin at the Public Health graduate level so as to provide the baseline core tools to be able to function as a vital team member when they are practicing out in the real world. Online learning is an efficient and effective method for providing public health education to in a flexible format to meet the needs of busy student-professions. This Public Health Disaster Preparedness online course developed during an Emergency Response state program practicum is a practical and proficient approach to accomplish this endeavor. ^

ABSTRACT The acquisition of intercultural communicative competence in Foreign Language (FL) and / or Languages for Specific Purposes teaching (LSP) must be a conscious and explicit learning to develop knowledge, skills and positive attitudes through contact with the target culture/s. The overall objective of this thesis is to assist the development of the intercultural communicative competence of the student of Spanish for Business (SB) through the audit of the teaching textbooks published in the last decade through a multidisciplinary approach to teaching LSP. The audit was carried out in order to ascertain the underlying approach and course design for the development of the intercultural communicative competence; to state the methodological approach to culture, language-and-culture relationship, culture teaching, culture acquisition and course design. To achieve this objective, the work has been divided into four parts: 1) review of the background on teaching the intercultural component and the analysis of materials in a courses of LSP through a multidisciplinary approach, 2) configuration of a theoretical construct allowing to select the object of study, to design the analytical instrument and to have an evaluative framework, together with the selection of a corpus of Spanish for Business textbooks, 3) development of the analytical instrument and 4) application of the analytical instrument and audit of selected textbooks. The results show that, in the textbooks analyzed, dominated a traditional view of culture, a low ratio treatment of the language-and-culture relationship, a partial implementation of the pedagogical principles for the acquisition of intercultural communicative competence; poor treatment of specific intercultural skills in business interactions, and partial coverage of the general cultural skills, which focus primarily on the acquisition of theoretical knowledge. Abstract: The objectives of this project are to provide the theory, exercises and other resources for students at the EUIT Telecommunications with A1 level in the Common European Framework of Reference for Languages (MCERL) in order to get A2 level in English without attending face-to-face courses. The platform used to achieve this aim is Moodle, which is currently being used in ILLLab website. This online course is due to attain the knowledge required in the optional subject Introduction to English for Professional and Academic Communication I which is based on the B1 level. It is a proposal of grammar with corresponding examples and exercises all based on adaptations of activities posted on a corpus of textbooks. It also adds resources (short readings, videos or links) that are appropriate for the subject. On the other hand, this project aims to solve the problem of language courses based on e-learning because these do not usually provide the student with the necessary tools to practice speaking. For this, we develop an application based on speech recognition techniques and propose three activities to practice speaking, and pronunciation. The proposal seeks to provide knowledge and practical experience for future projects based on synthesis tools and voice recognition, and means a new approach to e-learning courses for the study of languages.

Collaborative e-learning is increasingly appealing as a pedagogical approach that can positively affect student learning. We propose a didactical model that integrates multimedia with collaborative tools and peer assessment to foster collaborative e-learning. In this paper, we explain it and present the results of its application to the “International Seminars on Materials Science” online course. The proposed didactical model consists of five educational activities. In the first three, students review the multimedia resources proposed by the teacher in collaboration with their classmates. Then, in the last two activities, they create their own multimedia resources and assess those created by their classmates. These activities foster communication and collaboration among students and their ability to use and create multimedia resources. Our purpose is to encourage the creativity, motivation, and dynamism of the learning process for both teachers and students.
