Emissions of CO2 are constantly growing since the beginning of industrial era. Interruption of the production of major emitters sectors (energy and agriculture) is not a viable way and reducing all the emission through carbon capture and storage (CCS) is not economically viable and little publicly accepted, therefore, it becomes fundamentals to take actions like retrofitting already developed infrastructure employing cleanest resources, modify the actual processes limiting the emissions, and reduce the emissions already present through direct air capture. The present thesis will deeply discuss the aspects mentioned in regard to syngas and hydrogen production since they have a central role in the market of energy and chemicals. Among the strategies discussed, greater emphasis is given to the application of looping technologies and to direct air capture processes, as they have been the main point of this work. Particularly, chemical looping methane reforming to syngas was studied with Aspen Plus thermodynamic simulations, thermogravimetric analysis characterization (TGA) and testing in a fixed bed reactor. The process was studied cyclically exploiting the redox properties of a Ce-based oxide oxygen carrier synthetized with a simple forming procedure. The two steps of the looping cycles were studied isothermally at 900 °C and 950° C with a mixture of 10 %CH4 in N2 and of 3% O2 in N2, for carrier reduction and oxidation, respectively. During the stay abroad, in collaboration with the EHT of Zurich, a CO2 capture process in presence of amine solid sorbents was investigated, studying the difference in the performance achievable with the use of contactors of different geometry. The process was studied at two concentrations (382 ppm CO2 in N2 and 5.62% CO2 in N2) and at different flow rates, to understand the dynamics of the adsorption process and to define the mass transfer limiting step.

[Cu(hyetrz)3](CF3SO3)2·H2O [hyetrz = 4-(2′-hydroxyethyl)-1,2,4-triazole] represents the first structurally characterised ferromagnetically coupled CuII chain compound containing triple N1,N2-1,2,4-triazole bridges. catena-[μ-Tris{4-(2′-hydroxyethyl)-1,2,4-triazole-N1,N2}copper(II)] bis(trifluoromethanesulfonate) hydrate (C14H23F6S2O10CuN9) crystallises in the triclinic space group Pl, a = 13.54(3), b = 14.37(3), c = 15.61(4) Å, α = 95.9(1), β = 104.9(1), γ = 106.5(1)°, V = 2763(11) Å3, Z = 4 (CuII units). The CuII ions are linked by triple N1,N2-1,2,4-triazole bridges yielding an alternating chain with Cu1−Cu2 = 3.8842(4) Å and Cu2−Cu3 = 3.9354(4) Å. Analysis of the magnetic data according to a high-temperature series expansion gives a J value of +1.45(3) cm−1. The nature and the magnitude of the ferromagnetic exchange have been discussed on the basis of the structural features. (© Wiley-VCH Verlag GmbH & Co. KGaA, 69451 Weinheim, Germany, 2003).

In the framework of the International Partnerships in Ice Core Sciences, one of the most important targets is to retrieve an Antarctic ice core that extends over the last 1.5 million years (i.e. an ice core that enters the climate era when glacial–interglacial cycles followed the obliquity cycles of the earth). In such an ice core the annual layers of the oldest ice would be thinned by a factor of about 100 and the climatic information of a 10 000 yr interval would be contained in less than 1 m of ice. The gas record in such an Antarctic ice core can potentially reveal the role of greenhouse gas forcing on these 40 000 yr cycles. However, besides the extreme thinning of the annual layers, also the long residence time of the trapped air in the ice and the relatively high ice temperatures near the bedrock favour diffusive exchanges. To investigate the changes in the O2 / N2 ratio, as well as the trapped CO2 concentrations, we modelled the diffusive exchange of the trapped gases O2, N2 and CO2 along the vertical axis. However, the boundary conditions of a potential drilling site are not yet well constrained and the uncertainties in the permeation coefficients of the air constituents in the ice are large. In our simulations, we have set the drill site ice thickness at 2700 m and the bedrock ice temperature at 5–10 K below the ice pressure melting point. Using these conditions and including all further uncertainties associated with the drill site and the permeation coefficients, the results suggest that in the oldest ice the precessional variations in the O2 / N2 ratio will be damped by 50–100%, whereas CO2 concentration changes associated with glacial–interglacial variations will likely be conserved (simulated damping 5%). If the precessional O2 / N2 signal will have disappeared completely in this future ice core, orbital tuning of the ice-core age scale will be limited.

In-situ geotechnical measurements of surface sediments were carried out along large subaqueous dunes in the Knudedyb tidal inlet channel in the Danish Wadden Sea using a small free-falling penetrometer. Vertical profiles showed a typical stratification pattern with a resolution of ~1 cm depicting a thin surface layer of low sediment strength and a stiffer substratum below (quasi-static bearing capacity equivalent: 1-3 kPa in the top layer, 20-140 kPa in the underlying sediment; thickness of the top layer ca. 5-8 cm). Observed variations in the thickness and strength of the surface layer during a tidal cycle were compared to mean current velocities (measured using an acoustic Doppler current profiler, ADCP), high-resolution bathymetry (based on multibeam echo sounding, MBES) and qualitative estimates of suspended sediment distributions in the water column (estimated from ADCP backscatter intensity). The results revealed an ebb dominance in sediment remobilization, and a general accretion of the bed towards low water. A loose top layer occurred throughout the tidal cycle, likely influenced by bedload transport and small events of suspended sediment resettlement (thickness: 6 +-2 cm). Furthermore, this layer showed a significant increase in thickness (e.g. from 8 cm to 16 cm) related to periods of overall deposition. These findings imply that dynamic penetrometers can conveniently serve to (1) quantify potentially mobile sediments by determining the thickness of a loose sediment surface layer, (2) unravel sediment strength development in potentially mobile sediments and (3) identify sediment accumulation. Such data are an important complement and add a new geotechnical perspective during investigations of sediment remobilization processes in highly dynamic coastal environments.

High levels of substrate-based 1,5-stereoinduction are obtained in the boron-mediated aldol reactions of beta-oxygenated methyl ketones with achiral and chiral aldehydes. Remote induction from the boron enolates gives the 1,5-anti adducts, with the enolate pi-facial selectivity critically dependent upon the nature of the beta-alkoxy protecting group. This 1,5-anti aldol methodology has been strategically employed in the total synthesis of several natural products. At present, the origin of the high level of 1,5-anti induction obtained with the boron enolates is unclear, although a model based on a hydrogen bonding between the alkoxy oxygen and the formyl hydrogen has been recently proposed.

The pyrrolidine-2,5-dione ring in the title compound, C(15)H(15)NO(6), is in a twisted conformation with the acetyl C atoms projecting to opposite sides of the ring. The acetyl groups lie to opposite sides of the five-membered ring. The benzene ring is roughly perpendicular to the heterocyclic ring, forming a dihedral angle of 76.57 (14)degrees with it. In the crystal, molecules are connected through a network of C-H center dot center dot center dot O and C-H center dot center dot center dot pi interactions.

The dimorphic fungus Paracoccidioides brasiliensis is the causative agent of paracoccidioidomycosis, the most frequent systemic mycosis in Latin America. Our group has been working with paracoccin, a P. brasiliensis lectin with MM 70 kDa. which is purified by affinity, with immobilized N-acetylglucosamine (GlcNAc). Paracoccin has been described to play a role in fungal adhesion to extracellular matrix components and to induce high and persistent levels or TNF alpha. and nitric oxide production by macrophages. In the cell wall, paracoccin colocalizes with the beta-1,4-homopolymer of GlcNAc into the budding sites of the P. brasiliensis yeast cell. In this paper we present a protocol for the chitin-affinity purification or paracoccin. This procedure provided higher yields than those achieved by means of the technique based oil the affinity of this lectin with GlcNAc and had an impact on downstream assays. SDS-PAGE and Western blot analysis revealed similarities between the N-acetylglucosamine- and chitin-bound fractions, confirmed by MALDI-TOF-MS of trypsinic peptides. Western blot of two-dimensional gel electrophoresis of the yeast extract showed a major spot with M(r) 70000 and pl approximately 5.63. Moreover, an N-acetyl-beta-D-glucosaminidase activity was reported for paracoccin, thereby providing new insights into the mechanisms that lead to cell wall remodelling and opening new perspectives for its structural characterization. 2-Amino-3-methylimidazo[4,5-f]quinoline (IQ) is one of several mutagenic and carcinogenic heterocyclic amines formed during the cooking process of protein-rich foods, These compounds are highly mutagenic and have been shown to produce tumours in various tissues in rodents and non-human primates. Metabolic activation of IQ is a two-step process involving N-hydroxylation by CYP1A2 followed by esterification to a more reactive species capable of forming adducts with DNA, To date, acetylation and sulphation have been proposed as important pathways in the formation of N-hydroxy esters, In this study we have demonstrated the presence of an ATP-dependent activation pathway for N-hydroxy-IQ (N-OH-IQ) leading to DNA adduct formation measured by covalent binding of [H-3]N-OH-IQ to DNA, ATP-dependent DNA binding of N-OH-IQ was greatest in the cytosolic fraction of rat liver, although significant activity was also seen in colon, pancreas and lung. ATP was able to activate N-OH-IQ almost 10 times faster than N-hydroxy-2-amino-1-methyl-6-phenylimidazo[4,5-b]pyridine (7.7 +/- 0.3 and 0.9 +/- 0.1 pmol/mg protein/min, respectively). Using reported intracellular concentrations of cofactor, the ability of ATP to support DNA binding was similar to that seen with 3'-phosphoadenosine 5'-phosphosulphate and similar to 50% of that seen with acetyl coenzyme A (AcCoA), In addition to DNA binding, HPLC analysis of the reaction mixtures using ATP as co-factor showed the presence of two stable, polar metabolites, With AcCoA, only one metabolite was seen. The kinase inhibitors genistein, tyrphostin A25 and rottlerin significantly inhibited both DNA binding and metabolite formation with ATP. However, inhibition was unlikely to be due to effects on enzyme activity since the broad spectrum kinase inhibitor staurosporine had no effect and the inactive analogue of genistein, daidzein, was as potent as genistein, The effects of genistein and daidzein, which are naturally occurring isoflavones from soy and other food products, on DNA adduct formation may potentially be useful in the prevention of heterocyclic amine-induced carcinogenesis.
Thermal Characteristics of the Mud Nests of the Social Wasp Polybia spinifex (Hymenoptera; Vespidae)
Resumo:
The thermal characteristics of mud nests of Polybia spinifex were investigated by measuring internal and surface temperatures of the nests. The nests had a layer of mud envelope and consisted of mud with fine sand particles. The envelope had a vertically long slit-like entrance hole. The mud nests had high thermal conductivities (0.51-0.67 W/(m degrees C)) comparable to brick, rather than insulation materials of wasps` nests such as paper and wood. It was revealed that the long entrance radiated more heat from the thereto-image. The rate of thermal radiation (emissivity) of the nest surface was 0.80, and the value was similar to that of sand. The internal temperatures of the nests were high from top (T(n1), temperature difference between ambient temperature (T(a)) was 10 degrees C) to bottom (T(n3), difference, 5 degrees C) at noon. On the other hand, the temperature distributions were reversed during the night. Temperature T(n1) was lower by 1 degrees C than T(a), possibly from nightly dew on the top surface, whereas, at the middle point (T(n2),) and T(n3), temperatures were higher by 1 degrees C compared to T(a). Temperature fluctuations (ranges between maximum and minimum temperature) at T(n2) and T(n3) were similar to that of T(a), whereas the values at T(n1) and T(s) were higher than that of T(a).
