Microstructures and mechanical properties of a low carbon steel were studied after plate rolling and bar rolling. Plate rolling is characterized as a monotonic compressive loading, while bar rolling is characterized as a cross-compressive loading. A four-pass plate rolling and bar rolling experiment was designed so that the material experiences the same amount of strain at each pass during rolling. The rolling experiment was performed at moderately high temperatures (450, 550 and 650 °C). The microstructures and mechanical properties of the low carbon steel acquired from the two types of rolling experiments were compared. The results revealed that differences of loading path attributed by monotonic loading (plate rolling) and cross loading (bar rolling) significantly influenced the microstructures and mechanical properties such as yield stress, ultimate tensile stress, strain hardening exponent and elongation of the low carbon steel.

Calcium phosphate (Ca-P) coatings were deposited on Ti substrates by a biomimetic method from m-SBF and 10× SBF, respectively. Comparative study of microstructures and bond strengths of the Ca-P coatings deposited from those different SBFs was carried out. Effect of the surface roughness of the substrates on the bond strength of the Ca-P coatings was also studied. Scanning electron microscopy (SEM), X-ray diffractometry (XRD), Fourier transformed infrared spectroscopy (FTIR), inductive coupled plasma spectrometry (ICP) and thermogravimetry (TG) were used to characterize the Ca-P coatings. The bond strengths between the coatings and Ti substrates were measured using an adhesive strength test. Results indicated that the ionic concentrations of the SBFs and the surface roughness of the substrate had a significant influence on the formation, morphology and bond strength of the Ca-P precipitates. The induction period of time to deposit a complete Ca-P layer from the m-SBF is much longer, but the Ca-P coating is denser and has higher bond strength than that formed from the 10× SBF. The Ti with a surface roughness of Ra 0.64 µm and Rz 2.81 µm favoures the formation of a compact Ca-P coating from the m-SBF with the highest bond strength of approximately 15.5 MPa.

The data includes EBSD orientation maps of the specimens preheated at 1200 degrees celsius, and deformed at 1100 degrees celsius with 30% reduction and control cooled at the rates of 1, 18, and 95 degrees per second. The resultant microstructures correspond to quasipolygonal ferrite plus granular bainite, and lath bainite, respectively.

Data includes EBSD orentation maps of the specimens deformed in torsion at 1200 degrees celsius to strains of 0.1, 0.5, 0.9 and 1.3. The phase ratio is about 60% austenite and 40% ferrite. The miscrostructure is dynamically recovered and there is also some dynamic recrystallisation at strains of 0.9 and 1.3. The main portion of softening can be attributed to dynamic subgrain coalescence in austenite.

The effects of Si and Mn contents on microstructure, mechanical properties and formability of low carbon Si-Mn steels were studied, and the crack propagation of ferrite/bainite dual-phase steel was also investigated. The results showed that the increase in Si content increases the volume fraction of equiaxed ferrite. However, the increase in Mn content increases both strength and ductility, but decreases elongation and hole-expanding ratio. The crack of ferrite/bainite dual-phase steel is formed by the mode of microvoid coalescence. When a microcrack meets the bainite, it mostly propagates along the phase interface between ferrite and bainite and by cutting off ferrite grains. The hot-rolled ferrite/bainite dual-phase steel, which has a hole-expanding ratio of 95% and good property combination, could be produced by designing proper contents of Si and Mn as well as parameters of TMCP.

After 2% predeformation, the baking treatment with different schedule was carried out for low silicon TRIP steel sheet with niobium. The effects of baking temperature and time on microstructures and mechanical properties were investigated. The results showed that with increasing the baking temperature and time, the volume fraction of retained austenite decreases, and the volume fraction of tempered martensite increases; as baking temperature ranges from 80°C to 170°C, the bake-hardening (BH) value increases obviously, while from 170°C to 230°C, the variation of BH value is very slight; as baking time ranges from 2 min to 20 min, the BH value increases significantly, while the BH value decreases when baking time exceeds 20 min. So that when the baking temperature is 170°C and the baking time is 20 min, the low silicon TRIP steel sheet exhibits good bake-hardening behavior, and the highest BH value is above 70 MPa.

Paint baking treatment was carried out in a silicon oil bath at 170 °C for 20 min for Si-Al-Mn TRIP Steel sheet with different prestrains, and effect of prestrain on microstructures and properties was studied before and after baking. The results show that with the increasing of prestrain amount during prestraining and baking, the volume fraction of retained austenite decreases, and the volume fraction of martensite and bainite increases as well as yield strength increases; as prestrain ranges from 0 to 4%, the baking-hardening (BH) value increases; while the prestrain ranges from 4% to 16%, the BH value decreases; when the prestrain amount is 4%, the highest BH value is about 70 MPa for Si-Al-Mn TRIP steel sheet with niobium, which displays excellent baking-hardening behavior.

The microstructures, mechanical properties, corrosion behaviour and biocompatibility of the Mg-Zr-Ca alloys have been investigated for potential use in orthopaedic applications. The microstructures of the alloys were examined using X-ray diffraction analysis, optical microscopy and scanning electron microscopy. The mechanical properties of Mg-Zr-Ca alloys were determined from compressive tests. The corrosion behaviour has been investigated using an immersion test and electrochemical measurement. The biocompatibility was evaluated by cell growth factor using osteoblast-like SaOS2 cell. The experimental results indicate that the hot-rolled Mg-Zr-Ca alloys exhibit much finer microstructures than the as-cast Mg-Zr-Ca alloys which show coarse microstructures. The compressive strength of the hot-rolled alloys is much higher than that of the as-cast alloys and the human bone, which would offer appropriate mechanical properties for orthopaedic applications. The corrosion resistance of the alloys can be enhanced significantly by hot-rolling process. Hot-rolled Mg-0.5Zr-1Ca alloy (wt %) exhibits the lowest corrosion rate among all alloys studied in this paper. The hot-rolled Mg-0.5Zr-1Ca and Mg-1Zr-1Ca alloys exhibit better biocompatibility than other studied alloys and possess advanced mechanical properties, corrosion resistance and biocompatibility, suggesting that they have a great potential to be good candidates for orthopaedic applications. © 2012 Springer Science+Business Media New York.
