In the present work, the authors describe the excavation of the monument of "Pedras da Granja" or "Pedras Altas", in the Várzea de Sintra. The first part consists of the diary of the excavations, a description of the stratigraphy encountered and of the position of the finds. An inventory of all the material found in this monument is given in the second part. The conclusions show that the monument was built on the surface of a lapiás whose crevices were used for the insertion of the standing stones, and for the deposition of the dead. Three archaeological levels were shown to exist: - upper level: Bell Beaker level; - intermediate level containing some artifacts of the Bell Beaker culture; - lower, older level with human remains more or less in situ, belonging to a local Neolithic-culture influenced by cultural imports of foreign origin. The three levels are separated, at the southern edge of the site, by layers of fallen stones. The human remains belong to some old people, but mostly to young men, women and children.

This paper gives a short description of main stratigraphic unities from the early Cretaceous in Estremadura and Algarve, with their lithological, sedimentological and paleontological characteristics. The distribution of facies enable to propose a paleogeographic frame including eroded high areas and sedimentary low areas roughly parallel to the present coast. The early Cretaceous from Estremadura is splited up into three megasequences each one with regressive then transgressive tendencies: this fact must be connected with the leading action of distensive, slow or sudden, movements. Beyond the hercynian fault of Messejana, Algarve presents a different sedimentary evolution during the early Cretaceous.

This note is concerned with fish remains from upper Neogene beds at Farol das Lagostas (and nearby quarry of SECIL) and Baía Farta, mainly recovered by the author in 1960, 1961, 1963 and 1967. For further data see ANTUNES, 1964, pp. 213-215. All the forms identified until now (many of them for the first time) are show in «tableau I». Smaller ones are poorly represented. I. benedeni is provisorily accepted as a distinct species, though it may correspond to a dental morphotype that does exist equally in the extant I. oxyrhinchus (see text): therefore I. benedeni from Farol das Lagostas may after all represent only some dental variations that really belong in the form described as I. cf. oxyrhinchus. The presence of Aprionodon and Hypoprion could not be ascertained: Procarcharodon megalodon, Carcharodon carcharias, Isurus benedeni. Galeocerdo cuvieri, and Carcharhinus sp. I and sp. II are specially discussed. The whole fauna does not correspond either to a very shallow and coastal environment, or to deep waters far away from the coast. It clearly points out to warm waters: an acceptable model would be the fauna from the tropical Atlantic between Northern Angola and Senegal-Cape Verde. The age of this fauna was long regarded as Burdigalian. The data formerly presented (ANTUNES, 1963) that allowed us to ascribe a pliocene age to the uppermost Neogene beds of Farol das Lagostas (Neogene III, ANTUNES, 1964) are reviewed and developed in this paper. This view is corroborated by planctonic foraminifera and stratigraphical data which provide further evidence to proove the presence of miocene beds much younger than Burdigalian, and that some deposits previously correlated to this stage have instead a Plio-Pleistocene age. Fish fauna from Farol das Lagostas is very characteristic, with giant P. megalodon in association with C. carcharias (which predominates, and whose stratigraphical distribution is particularly discussed), and with other very advanced forms like the extant tiger shark, G. cuvieri, enormous I. Benedeni, Hemipristis, and Carcharhinus (whose size largely exceeds the maximum observed with miocene material). With the exception of P. megalodon (extinct) all the other forms show very close affinities, or even identity with modern species. Comparisons with very similar faunas from some South African localities that may also have a Pliocene age are also presented.

Small mammals from a water well near Morgadinho indicate an age comprised between Middle Villafranchian, MN 17 zone and lowermost Middle Pleistocene, MN 20. This fauna corresponds to an humid region under a possibly temperate (certainly not cool) climate. Nearly all Gastropoda have quaternary affinities. Most are freshwater dwellers. Ostracoda lived in lacustrine or extensive swamp enviromnents rich in plants. They also point out to fresh waters (eventually oligohaline; this may suggest some kind of communication with the sea, which would not be very close by), and to water temperatures over 10.5°C. Charophyta thrive in fresh, carbonate-rich waters. Cyprinid fishes are also freshwater dwellers, and amphibians exclude any significant salinity. Palynological analysis shows climate should be warm and rather humid. Near Morgadinho there was a mixte mesophytic forest (and perhaps a sempervirent, large leave type forest at Algoz). Morgadinho and Algoz (this locality being dated MN 20, lowermost Middle Pleistocene) are probably correlative, and this may also be true for lacustrine limestones at Ponte das Lavadeiras, near Faro.

These work presents the quantitative and qualitative inventory and the stratigraphic distribution of fossil plants (spores, pollens, sterns, leaves and seeds) recognized the Miocene of the portuguese part of Tagus basin. For each lithostratigraphic unit, associations with ecological (paleoclimatic) meaning are defined. It was also possible to follow the evolution of the vegetation and the climate during the considered cronostratigraphic interval which includes most of the Miocene (Aquitanian to lower-middle Tortonian).

The presence of Craspedochelys (Plesiochelys s.l.) at Romão, Portugal, indicates that, in that country, the Thalassemydid dispersal began with the first occurrences of the group in Europe, in the late Kimmeridgian: communications existed between septentrional, atlantic and mesogean seas. The review of the family is considered.

The synthetic study of the uppermost Cretaceous of the Beira Litoral (fauna, flora) confirms its upper Campanian-Maastrichtian age. It shows the presence of a tropical to subtropical climate in an area constituted by a low coastal plain only occasionally linked to the sea, saturated with fresh water and possessing accordingly, a predominantely freshwater fauna (Viso, Aveiro); this plain changed towards the interior into a drier more forested zone with a more abundant terrestrial fauna which includes mammals (Taveiro). A thorough study of the chelonian Rosasia, abundant on the coastal plain, was made possible thanks to the discovery of a skull: it demonstrates that the genus belongs to the family Bothremydidae, revalided here. The composition of this family is presented, its phylogenetic and paleobiogeographic relation with the other pleurodires are analyzed, and its diagnosis established. The family is constituted of three groups; Rosasia belongs to one of these, the Bothremys group.

For the first time, small mammals were found at the earliest marine level in the northeastern part of the lower Tagus basin, to the NE of Lisbon. At this new locality, at the 10 kilometer of the Lisbon-Oporto A1-IP1 highway, conglomerates yielded, along with marine fossils, more or less abraded teeth and bones from insectivores, lagomorphs, rodents and small artiodactyls (sec Tableau 1). Age may he ascribed to the lower Miocene, MN 2b Neogene mammal unit (about 22 My), but an early MN 3 age cannot be entirely excluded. That corresponds to latest Aquitanian (or less probably earliest Burdigalian) (sec Tableau 2). This is the first hitherto found locality with small mammals of this age as far as Portugal is concerned, as well as the oldest locality so far known in the Tagus basin. Km 10 is somewhat older than the localities of Universidade Católica and Avenida do Uruguay in Lisbon (ANTUNES & MEIN, 1986). Hence we can rather accurately date the age of the first marine transgression in the northeastern part of the lower Tagus basin. This shows that in this region there are no marine equivalents of the "Venus ribeiroi beds" (Aquitanian,Division 1 of the Lisbon Miocene series). Correlation between this unit and the uppermost levels of the essentially paleogene "Complexo de Benfica" may be possible. Fossils at km 10 point out to shallow, coastal, highenergy marine environments. Sedimentological features are compatible with this model. Dry land and swamps with brackish (or ev en fresh) waters were present nearby. From those areas came remains of mammals, crocodylians, as well as oysters and charophytes that were later transported to the sea. Sea was warmer than the extant Atlantic at the same latitudes, even if conditions were not strictly tropical then. These conditions surely influenced climate in the nearby regions. Ecological data concerning mammalian faunas distinctly point out to nearby forest-rich environments, much more so than for Universidade Católica and Avenida do Uruguay localities, from where drier, even steppe environment forms largely prevail.
