We have measured the Lambda(b) lifetime using the exclusive decay Lambda(b)-> J/psi Lambda, based on 1.2 fb(-1) of data collected with the D0 detector during 2002-2006. From 171 reconstructed Lambda(b) decays, where the J/psi and Lambda are identified via the decays J/psi ->mu(+)mu(-) and Lambda -> p pi, we measured the Lambda(b) lifetime to be tau(Lambda(b))=1.218(-0.115)(+0.130)(stat)+/- 0.042(syst) ps. We also measured the B-0 lifetime in the decay B-0 -> J/psi(mu(+)mu(-))K-S(0)(pi(+)pi(-)) to be tau(B-0)=1.501(-0.074)(+0.078)(stat)+/- 0.050(syst) ps, yielding a lifetime ratio of tau(Lambda(b))/tau(B-0)=0.811(-0.087)(+0.096)(stat)+/- 0.034(syst).

The possibility of kaon condensation in high-density symmetric nuclear matter is investigated including both s- and p-wave kaon-baryon interactions within the relativistic mean-field (RMF) theory. Above a certain density, we have a collective (D) over bar (S) state carrying the same quantum numbers as the antikaon. The appearance of the (K) over bar (S) state is caused by the time component of the axial-vector interaction between kaons and baryons. It is shown that the system becomes unstable with respect to condensation of K-(K) over bar (S) pairs. We consider how the effective baryon masses affect the kaon self-energy coming from the time component of the axial-vector interaction. Also, the role of the spatial component of the axial-vector interaction on the possible existence of the collective kaonic states is discussed in connection with A-mixing effects in the ground state of high-density matter: Implications of K (K) over bar (S) condensation for high-energy heavy-ion collisions are briefly mentioned. We present measurements of the Lambda(b)(0) lifetime in the exclusive decay channel Lambda(b)(0)-> J/psi Lambda(0), with J/psi ->mu(+)mu(-) and Lambda(0)-> p pi(-), the B-0 lifetime in the decay B-0-> J/psi K-S(0) with J/psi ->mu(+)mu(-) and K-S(0)->pi(+)pi(-), and the ratio of these lifetimes. The analysis is based on approximately 250 pb(-1) of data recorded with the D0 detector in p (p) over bar collisions at root s = 1.96 TeV. The Lambda(b)(0) lifetime is determined to be tau(Lambda(b)(0))=1.22(-0.18)(+0.22)(stat)+/- 0.04(syst) ps, the B-0 lifetime tau(B-0)=1.40(-) (+0.11)(0.10)(stat)+/- 0.03(syst) ps, and the ratio tau(Lambda(b)(0))/tau(B-0)=0.87(-) (+0.17)(0.14)(stat)+/- 0.03(syst). In contrast with previous measurements using semileptonic decays, this is the first determination of the Lambda(b)(0) lifetime based on a fully reconstructed decay channel.

We study the (lambda/4!)phi(4) massless scalar field theory in a four-dimensional Euclidean space, where all but one of the coordinates are unbounded. We are considering Dirichlet boundary conditions in two hyperplanes, breaking the translation invariance of the system. We show how to implement the perturbative renormalization up to two-loop level of the theory. First, analyzing the full two and four-point functions at the one-loop level, we show that the bulk counterterms are sufficient to render the theory finite. Meanwhile, at the two-loop level, we must also introduce surface counterterms in the bare Lagrangian in order to make finite the full two and also four-point Schwinger functions. A statistical law for the multiplicities of the SU(3) irreps (lambda, mu) in the reduction of totally symmetric irreducible representations {m} of U(N), N = (eta + 1) (eta + 2)/2 with eta being the three-dimensional oscillator major shell quantum number, is derived in terms of the quadratic and cubic invariants of SU(3), by determining the first three terms of an asymptotic expansion for the multiplicities. To this end, the bivariate Edgeworth expansion known in statistics is used. Simple formulae, in terms of m and eta, for all the parameters in the expansion are derived. Numerical tests with large m and eta = 4, 5 and 6 show good agreement with the statistical formula for the SU(3) multiplicities.

Objective: the aim of this study was to assess, through Raman spectroscopy, the incorporation of calcium hydroxyapatite (CHA; similar to 960 cm(-1)), and scanning electron microscopy (SEM), the bone quality on the healing bone around dental implants after laser photobiomodulation ( lambda 830 nm). Background Data: Laser photobiomodulation has been successfully used to improve bone quality around dental implants, allowing early wearing of prostheses. Methods: Fourteen rabbits received a titanium implant on the tibia; eight of them were irradiated with lambda 830 nm laser ( seven sessions at 48-h intervals, 21.5 J/cm(2) per point, 10 mW, phi similar to 0.0028 cm(2), 86 J per session), and six acted as control. The animals were sacrificed 15, 30, and 45 days after surgery. Specimens were routinely prepared for Raman spectroscopy and SEM. Eight readings were taken on the bone around the implant. Results: the results showed significant differences on the concentration of CHA on irradiated and control specimens at both 30 and 45 days after surgery ( p < 0.001). Conclusion: It is concluded that infrared laser photobiomodulation does improve bone healing, and this may be safely assessed by Raman spectroscopy or SEM.

It has been suggested that low-level laser therapy (LLLT) can modulate inflammatory processes. The aim of this experiment was to investigate what effects red laser irradiation with two different wavelengths (660 nm and 684 nm) on carrageenan-induced rat paw edema and histology. Thirty two male Wistar rats were randomly divided into four groups. One group received a sterile saline injection, while inflammation was induced by a sub-plantar injection of carrageenan (1 mg/paw) in the three other groups. After 1 h, LLLT was administered to the paw in two of the carrageenan-injected groups. Continuous wave 660 nm and 684 nm red lasers respectively with mean optical outputs of 30 mW and doses of 7.5 J/cm(2) were used. The 660 nm and 684 nm laser groups developed significantly (P < 0.01) less edema (0.58 ml [SE +/- 0.17] ml and 0.76 ml [SE +/- 0.10] respectively) than the control group (1.67 ml [SE +/- 0.191) at 4 h after injections. Similarly, both laser groups showed a significantly lower number of inflammatory cells in the muscular and conjunctive sub-plantar tissues than the control group. We conclude that both 660 nm and 684 nm red wavelengths of LLLT are effective in reducing edema formation and inflammatory cell migration when a dose of 7.5 J/cm(2) is used. It is shown that the action functional S[g, phi] = integral d4 x square-root -g[R/k(1 + klambdaphi2) + partial derivative(mu)phi partial derivative(mu)phi] describes, in general, one and the same classical theory whatever may be the value of the coupling constant lambda.

1. We investigated the possible potentiating effect of chloramphenicol succinate (30 mg/kg, every 12 h for 4 days, ip) on the response of polymorphonuclear neutrophils to carrageenin (150 mug, ip) or dextran (100 mug, ip) in the peritoneal cavity of male Wistar rats (180-230 g; N = 12 in each group).2. Chloramphenicol potentiated the cell migration induced by carrageenin (35%) but not that induced by dextran. Previous macrophage depletion in the peritoneal cavity by washing with sterile saline abolished the cell response, whereas a previous thioglycollate-induced increase in macrophage numbers enhanced the potentiating effect (60%).3. These results suggest that the potentiating effect on polymorphonuclear neutrophil migration induced by chloramphenicol may be related to chemotactic factors released by macrophages.
