K-Ar dates were obtained for three pillow basalt samples recovered from Site 608 (Samples 608-58-1, 103-109 cm; 608-59-1, 3-7 cm; 608-59-1, 48-53 cm). Reliable K-Ar dates cannot be routinely obtained for deep-sea igneous rocks, because they may be subject to inaccuracies related to seawater alteration (Seidemann, 1977, doi:10.1130/0016-7606(1977)88<1660:EOSAOK>2.0.CO;2) and/or the presence of excess radiogenic 40Ar (Dalrymple and Moore, 1968, doi:10.1126/science.161.3846.1132; Dymond, 1970, doi:10.1130/0016-7606(1970)81[1229:EAISBP]2.0.CO;2). Thus, the possibility that the samples dated in this study were subject to these sources of inaccuracy must be evaluated.

ABSTRACT The aim of this research is to confirm whether the forensic analysis of the traffic forecast studies for tolled highways may bring to light the reasons behind the lack of accuracy. The methodology used on this research is empirical and is based on the ex –post facto analysis of the real traffic numbers compared to the forecasted for the tolled highways Radial 3 and Radial 5. Firstly the main features of tolled highways are presented as an introductory chapter. Secondly a broad bibliographic search is presented, this is done from a global perspective and from the Spanish perspective too. From this review, a list of the main causes behind the systematic inaccuracy together with measures to improve future traffic forecast exercises are shown. In what we could consider as the core of the research, it focuses on the ratios of actual / forecast traffic for the tolled highways Radial 3 y Radial 5 in Madrid outskirts. From a critical perspective, the methodology and inputs used in the traffic studies are analysed. In a further step, the trip assignment stage is scrutinised to quantify the influence of the inputs and the assignment model itself in the accuracy of the traffic studies. This exercise is bases on the year 2006. Finally, the assignment model used is criticised for its application in tolled urban highways. The assumptions behind the model, rational agent and expected utility maximization theories, are questioned under the theories presented by Kahneman and Tversky (Prospect Theory). To overcome these assignment model limitations, the author presents a semi empiric new diversion curve. This curve links the traffic proportion using the tolled highway and the average speed in the toll free alternative highway.

ABSTRACT The increasingly demanding requirements in terms of missions, operational and environmental constraints as well as new technologies, constantly impose challenges to naval architects to generate alternatives and asses their performance in the early stages of design. That is the case of Riverine Support Patrol Vessel (RSPV), designed and built by COTECMAR for the Colombian Navy. RSPV are riverine ships with a Beam-Draft ratio exceeding most of existing ships (B/T=9,5), mainly due to the restrictions in draft as a result of shallow water environment. The ships are equipped with azimuthal propulsion system of the “Pump-Jet” type. The peculiarities of the ship and the operational environment, characterized by tropical rivers of variable depth depending on the rain and dry seasons, as well as the lack channels and the effect of water current, make manoeuvrability and controllability fundamental to fulfill its mission; on the other hand, there are not validated mathematical models available to predict the manoeuvrability of such ships with the associated water depth effects in the early stages of design. This dissertation addresses the development of a mathematical model for shallow waters’ manoeuvrability simulation of ships with high Beam-Draft ratio and azimuthal propulsion systems type “Pump-Jet”, whose stream generates the thrust required by the ship to advance and also the steering force depending on the orientation angle, eliminating the need of rudders. The mathematical model has been validated with the results of RSPV’s full scale manoeuvring tests, through a comparison of paths, time series of state variables and other parameters taken from turning tests, such as turning diameter, tactical diameter, advance and transfer. The test plan was developed applying techniques of Design of Experiments “DOE”, in order to rationalize the number of runs in different conditions of water depth, ship speed and jet stream orientation (rudder angle). A data acquisition and processing system was developed, following the guidelines of ITTC, as part of this research effort, in order to minimize errors by environmental effects and inaccuracy in measurement instruments, The negative effects of depth on manoeuvrability parameters for conventional ships (Effect Type S: the path described by the ship during turning test increase with decrease of water depth), has been documented in the open literature; however for wide-beam ships, B/T=7,51 (Yoshimura, y otros, 1.988) and B/T=6,38 (Yasukawa, y otros, 1.995) has been reported the opposite effect (Type NS). The latter effect has been observed thru model testing but until now had not been validated with full-scale results. In ships with propellers and rudders, type NS effect is due to the fact that increment of rudder force becomes larger than hull force with decrease of water depth; in the study case, the phenomenon is associated with better efficiency of the Pump-Jet once the vessel speed becomes lower, due to hull added resistance by the effect of the decrease of water depth. The results of full scale tests validates the excellent performance of this class of ships, fulfilling the manoeuvrability criteria in excess and showing that turning diameter and other parameters in high beam-draft ratio vessels do improve with the decrease of depth.

This study assessed the inaccuracy of the traffic estimates for toll motorway concessions in Spain. It was found that the estimates conducted by both the government and the concessionaire showed a significant bias towards overestimating traffic. The level of overestimation in Spain is even greater than that reported by other studies based on worldwide data. The notorious levels of overestimation entail severe burdens to the economics of the concessionaires that often prompt renegotiations of the contracts, which are often accepted by the government. These renegotiations usually end up with toll changes or extension of the concession terms, which have to be ultimately borne by future motorway users. It is postulated herein that the bias towards overestimating traffic in toll motorways in Spain is mostly caused by strategic issues rather than by modelling errors.

Dynamic thermal management techniques require a collection of on-chip thermal sensors that imply a significant area and power overhead. Finding the optimum number of temperature monitors and their location on the chip surface to optimize accuracy is an NP-hard problem. In this work we improve the modeling of the problem by including area, power and networking constraints along with the consideration of three inaccuracy terms: spatial errors, sampling rate errors and monitor-inherent errors. The problem is solved by the simulated annealing algorithm. We apply the algorithm to a test case employing three different types of monitors to highlight the importance of the different metrics. Finally we present a case study of the Alpha 21364 processor under two different constraint scenarios.

ABSTRACT The doctoral thesis develops an original research, held in the field of the Construction History, about the constructive reason of the frontier fortifications in the Late Middle Age between the Crowns of Castile and Aragón in the actual province of Soria, Spain. In the title is expressed the main objective, and also the temporal scope —from the reconquest in the 12th Century by Alfonso the First of Aragón to the unification under the common kingdom of the Catholic Kings— and the territorial extension that the research delimits: those Castilian regions in the border with Aragón in the actual province of Soria. During this period, a series of border wars were been, and this is the reason for the fortification of the border line and the main roads between both Crowns. The lack of studies of these fortifications as participants in a fortified system is the justification of the research. There is several analysis levels: territorial, historical, architectonic, defensive and constructive. Likewise, there is a lack of strictness and inaccuracy in the constructive items in the publications about several fortifications of this study field. This aspect has caused mistakes in the dating because there is neither artistic nor stylistic elements which determines a epoch. The traditionally accepted datings are challenged. An hypothesis is formulated: in the absence of artistic or stylistic elements in a sober and functional buildings is possible to date the time of construction with sufficiently approximation based on construction criteria once formed a cronotypologic classification of each building technique. The hypothesis, therefore, propose a main aim: the study of the constructive reason of the fortified border system. This aim is developed in a series of specifically targets whose achievement programs the analysis levels: - To know and to detail the historical elements which started the wars between Castile and Aragon and its development using historiographical tools, and to analyze the natural characteristic of the territory through cartographical tools. - To understand and to analyze the different architectural types and the building traditions employed in the military buildings in the time researched. - To locate, to document, and to select for their analysis the fortresses and military constructions erected during these border wars in the actual province of Soria through fieldwork and bibliographical and cartographical methods. - To conduct a general study on the fortified system in territorial scale. - To research the architectural, constructive and defensive typology of the system of these border late medieval fortifications. - To analyze the construction logic of the selected case studies and to characterize in the items of material, elements, systems and construction processes. - To sort scattered historical information and to correct mistakes to make a base by which to establish a historic speech of each case study. - To compare and to relate the construction techniques employed in these fortresses with those used in the same time range . - To spread for discussion the research results in the usual scientists forums. The method combines the destock work with an intense fieldwork. Fifty fortifications have been documented and it has written their corresponding data collection card. Data collection has been included in a database that includes general aspects, typological, constructive and basic bibliographical data, as an inventory of fortifications in the province. The selected fortifications are grouped according to a typological and constructive classification which lead the lines of the later study. There is a chapter for the antecedents in which the history of the medieval fortified construction in Europe and in Spain is studied by analyzing the evolution of architectural types and the many cultural influences along the opposite seasides of the Mediterranean Sea, from the Islamic and Crusader East to the Iberian Peninsula in where there were a long and continuous war during eight hundred years. The territory is analyzed as a container of fortifications. This analysis reveals that there is an intimate relationship between the location of the fortifications and the natural forms that define the communication roads between the Duero, Ebro and Tajo valleys. Indeed, the study area has been a cross-territory from ancient times more than a frontierterritory. This communication character explains the concerns about its control both by Rome and by the Muslims of Córdoba as medieval Christian kingdoms. The analysis of historical elements is supplemented by detailed study of border war between Castile and Aragon and the social and political issues that led to the fortification as border definition system and spatial, jurisdictional, social and administrative planning. The fortified architecture is essentially functional: it is responsible for defense. In this sense, after a morphological study of selected castles is performed an extensive analysis of its defensive elements, investigating its origin and application. This analisis serves for the definition of parameters for dating. The purpose of the thesis is the study of the constructive logic. First, various building materials are explained. Then, masonry is grouped into two major constructive groups: rigged masonry and formwork masonry. The historical evolution and the constructive typology and mensiology are studied for each one of the three main techniques: the use of brickwork, the mortar wall and rammed-earth. Many case studies have been documented along the Iberian Peninsula and also in the study area. As conclusion, there is a dimensional evolution of the rammed-earth walls. This evolution is more evident into the Muslim masonry than in the late medieval walls: the reason is the use of the cubit as module. From each of the techniques discussed, a singular and representative case of study has been selected. The castle of Arcos de Jalon is a significant example of mix masonry of stone and brick rows. The walled city of Peñalcázar is built with masonry formwork. Serón de Nágima castle, at last, is a typical and main case of the use of the rammedearth wall of late medieval military architecture. Each of these three case studies were examined under the same four analysis levels above mentioned: territorial, historical, architectural and defensive and constructive. The systematic method of study has facilitated the order in the research and the obtaining of results and conclusions that verify the hypotheses and achieve the research objectives. Dating of the fortifications construction has been revised by studying the cronotypological issues of its masonry. The method can be transferred to the study of other fortified systems. Finally, the thesis describes two main research new ways aimed at completing the study of the late medieval fortified border of Castile in the actual province of Soria. The first of them is the characterization and datig by physicochemical methods the sample pieces of wood construction preserved embedded in the masonry. The second research way is the investigation of the documents in archives that may reveal new information about the foundation, repair, sale or any aspect to economic, legal, organizational or administrative concerning fortifications in contemporary documents.

This paper presents a CMOS temperature sensor based on the thermal dependencies of the leakage currents targeting the 65 nm node. To compensate for the effect of process fluctuations, the proposed sensor realizes the ratio of two measures of the time it takes a capacitor to discharge through a transistor in the subthreshold regime. Furthermore, a novel charging mechanism for the capacitor is proposed to further increase the robustness against fabrication variability. The sensor, including digitization and interfacing, occupies 0.0016 mm2 and has an energy consumption of 47.7–633 pJ per sample. The resolution of the sensor is 0.28 °C, and the 3σ inaccuracy over the range 40–110 °C is 1.17 °C.

Aerobic Gymnastic is the ability to perform complex movements produced by the traditional aerobic exercises, in a continuous manner, with high intensity, perfectly integrated with soundtracks. This sport is performed in an aerobic/anaerobic lactacid condition and expects the execution of complex movements produced by the traditional aerobic exercises integrated with difficulty elements performed with a high technical level. An inaccuracy about this sport is related to the name itself “aerobic” because Aerobic Gymnastic does not use just the aerobic work during the competition, due to the fact that the exercises last among 1’30” and 1’45” at high rhythm. Agonistic Aerobics exploit the basic movements of amateur Aerobics and its coordination schemes, even though the agonistic Aerobics is so much intense than the amateur Aerobics to need a completely different mix of energetic mechanisms. Due to the complexity and the speed with which you perform the technical elements of Aerobic Gymnastic, the introduction of video analysis is essential for a qualitative and quantitative evaluation of athletes’ performance during the training. The performance analysis can allow the accurate analysis and explanation of the evolution and dynamics of a historical phenomenon and motor sports. The notational analysis is used by technicians to have an objective analysis of performance. Tactics, technique and individual movements can be analyzed to help coaches and athletes to re-evaluate their performance and gain advantage during the competition. The purpose of the following experimental work will be a starting point for analyzing the performance of the athletes in an objective way, not only during competitions, but especially during the phases of training. It is, therefore, advisable to introduce the video analysis and notational analysis for more quantitative and qualitative examination of technical movements. The goal is to lead to an improvement of the technique of the athlete and the teaching of the coach.

Indomethacin (IND) is the drug of choice for the closure of a patent ductus arteriosus (PDA) in neonates. This paper describes a simple, sensitive, accurate and precise microscale HPLC method suitable for the analysis of IND in plasma of premature neonates. Samples were prepared by plasma protein precipitation with acetonitrile containing the methyl ester of IND as the internal standard (IS). Chromatography was performed on a Hypersil C-18 column. The mobile phase of methanol, water and orthophosphoric acid (70:29.5:0.5, v/v, respectively), was delivered at 1.5 mL/min and monitored at 270 nm. IND and the IS were eluted at 2.9 and 4.3 min, respectively. Calibrations were linear (r > 0.999) from 25 to 2500 mu g/L. The inter- and intra-day assay imprecision was less than 4.3% at 400-2000 mu g/L, and less than 22.1% at 35 mu g/L. Inaccuracy ranged from -6.0% to +1.0% from 35 to 2000 mu g/L. The absolute recovery of IND over this range was 93.0-113.3%. The IS was stable for at least 36 h when added to plasma at ambient temperature. This method is suitable for pharmacokinetic studies of IND and has potential for monitoring therapy in infants with PDA when a target therapeutic range for IND has been validated. This thesis is concerned with an empirical investigation of the factors that predict a successful salesperson, using a cross-cultural comparison of two countries: the UK and Malaysia. Besides collecting quantitative data, qualitative data on organisational, environmental and cultural factors were also collected through interviews, personal and case observations. The quantitative data consist of sixteen independent factors and three dependent factors. The independent variables include self-efficacy, self-esteem, locus of control, self-monitoring, extrinsic motivation, intrinsic motivation, experience, training perception, role ambiguity, role conflict, role inaccuracy, gender, age, education, race and religion. The dependent variables are performance target achieved, performance earnings and performance ratings. Questionnaires were distributed to about 500 salespersons in each country, from three insurance companies in the UK and two insurance companies in Malaysia. Response rates were 75 and 50 percent from the UK and Malaysia respectively. The survey results indicated that a salesperson's performance in the UK is predicted by self-efficacy, internal locus of control, self-esteem, extrinsic motivation, experience, training perceptions, role conflict and gender. In Malaysia, a salesperson's performance is predicted by self-efficacy, self-monitoring, experience, role conflict, role ambiguity, education, gender, race and religion. Self-efficacy, experience, role conflict and gender are common predictors of salespersons' performance in both cultures. The likely explanation for these results is culture differences, i.e. UK has a homogeneous culture, while Malaysia has a heterogeneous one. Results from the case observations, such as organisational and environmental factors, give supporting evidence in explaining the empirical results. Implications from the findings are discussed from two aspects: (1) theoretical implications for divergence/convergence theory, Hofstede's model, Churchill's model, and (2) managerial implications for selection, training, motivation and appraisal.

This thesis is concerned with investigations of the effects of molecular encounters on nuclear magnetic resonance spin-lattice relaxation times, with particular reference to mesitylene in mixtures with cyclohexane and TMS. The purpose of the work was to establish the best theoretical description of T1 and assess whether a recently identified mechanism (buffeting), that influences n.m.r. chemical shifts, governs Tl also. A set of experimental conditions are presented that allow reliable measurements of Tl and the N. O. E. for 1H and 13C using both C. W. and F.T. n.m.r. spectroscopy. Literature data for benzene, cyclohexane and chlorobenzene diluted by CC14 and CS2 are used to show that the Hill theory affords the best estimation of their correlation times but appears to be mass dependent. Evaluation of the T1 of the mesitylene protons indicates that a combined Hill-Bloembergen-Purcell-Pound model gives an accurate estimation of T1; subsequently this was shown to be due to cancellation of errors in the calculated intra and intemolecular components. Three experimental methods for the separation of the intra and intermolecular relaxation times are described. The relaxation times of the 13C proton satellite of neat bezene, 1,4 dioxane and mesitylene were measured. Theoretical analyses of the data allow the calculation of Tl intra. Studies of intermolecular NOE's were found to afford a general method of separating observed T1's into their intra and intermolecular components. The aryl 1H and corresponding 13C T1 values and the NOE for the ring carbon of mesitylene in CC14 and C6H12-TMS have been used in combination to determine T1intra and T1inter. The Hill and B.P.P. models are shown to predict similarly inaccurate values for T1linter. A buffeting contribution to T1inter is proposed which when applied to the BPP model and to the Gutowsky-Woessner expression for T1inter gives an inaccuracy of 12% and 6% respectively with respect to theexperimentally based T1inter.

Methods of dynamic modelling and analysis of structures, for example the finite element method, are well developed. However, it is generally agreed that accurate modelling of complex structures is difficult and for critical applications it is necessary to validate or update the theoretical models using data measured from actual structures. The techniques of identifying the parameters of linear dynamic models using Vibration test data have attracted considerable interest recently. However, no method has received a general acceptance due to a number of difficulties. These difficulties are mainly due to (i) Incomplete number of Vibration modes that can be excited and measured, (ii) Incomplete number of coordinates that can be measured, (iii) Inaccuracy in the experimental data (iv) Inaccuracy in the model structure. This thesis reports on a new approach to update the parameters of a finite element model as well as a lumped parameter model with a diagonal mass matrix. The structure and its theoretical model are equally perturbed by adding mass or stiffness and the incomplete number of eigen-data is measured. The parameters are then identified by an iterative updating of the initial estimates, by sensitivity analysis, using eigenvalues or both eigenvalues and eigenvectors of the structure before and after perturbation. It is shown that with a suitable choice of the perturbing coordinates exact parameters can be identified if the data and the model structure are exact. The theoretical basis of the technique is presented. To cope with measurement errors and possible inaccuracies in the model structure, a well known Bayesian approach is used to minimize the least squares difference between the updated and the initial parameters. The eigen-data of the structure with added mass or stiffness is also determined using the frequency response data of the unmodified structure by a structural modification technique. Thus, mass or stiffness do not have to be added physically. The mass-stiffness addition technique is demonstrated by simulation examples and Laboratory experiments on beams and an H-frame.
