Crowd induced dynamic loading in large structures, such as gymnasiums or stadium, is usually modelled as a series of harmonic loads which are defined in terms of their Fourier coefficients. Different values of these coefficients that were obtained from full scale measurements can be found in codes. Recently, an alternative has been proposed, based on random generation of load time histories that take into account phase lag among individuals inside the crowd. This paper presents the testing done on a structure designed to be a gymnasium. Two series of dynamic test were performed on the gym slab. For the first test an electrodynamic shaker was placed at several locations and during the second one people located inside a marked area bounced and jumped guided by different metronome rates. A finite element model (FEM) is presented and a comparison of numerically predicted and experimentally observed vibration modes and frequencies has been used to assess its validity. The second group of measurements will be compared with predictions made using the FEM model and three alternatives for crowd induced load modelling.

Crowd induced dynamic loading in large structures, such as gymnasiums or stadiums, is usually modelled as a series of harmonic loads which are defined in terms of their Fourier coefficients. Different values of these Fourier coefficients that were obtained from full scale measurements can be found in codes. Recently, an alternative has been proposed, based on random generation of load time histories that take into account phase lags among individuals inside the crowd. Generally the testing is performed on platforms or structures that can be considered rigid because their natural frequencies are higher than the excitation frequencies associated with crowd loading. In this paper we shall present the testing done on a structure designed to be a gymnasium, which has natural frequencies within that range. In this test the gym slab was instrumented with acceleration sensors and different people jumped on a force plate installed on the floor. Test results have been compared with predictions based on the two abovementioned load modelling alternatives and a new methodology for modelling jumping loads has been proposed in order to reduce the difference between experimental and numerical results at high frequency range.

The interest for modelling of human actions acting on structures has been recurrent since the first accidents on suspension bridges in the nineteenth century like Broughton (1831) in the U.K. or Angers (1850) in France. Stadiums, gymnasiums are other type of structure where the human induced vibration is very important. In these structures appear particular phenomenon like the interaction person-structure (lock-in), the person-person synchronization, and the influence of the mass and damping of the people in the structure behaviour. This work focuses on the latter topic. The dynamic characteristic of a structure can be changed due to the presence of people on it. In order to evaluate these property modifications several testing have been carried out on a structure designed to be a gymnasium. For the test an electro-dynamic shaker was installed in a fixed point of the gym slab and different groups of people were located around the shaker. In each test the number of people was changed and also their posture (standing and sitting). Test data were analyzed and processed to verify modifications in the structure behaviour.

For the test an electro-dynamic shaker was installed at a fixed point of the gym slab and different groups of people were located around the shaker. The dynamic characteristics of the structure without people inside have been calculated by two methods: using a three-dimensional finite element model of the building and by operational modal analysis. These calculated experimental and numerical values are the reference values used to evaluate the modifications in the dynamic properties of the structure.

In this paper we present the tests on a structure designed to be a gymnasium, which has natural frequencies within that range. In these tests the gym slab was instrumented with acceleration sensors and different people jumped on a force plate installed on the floor. The test results have been compared with predictions based on the two existing load modelling alternatives (Sim and SCI Guide) and two new methodologies for modelling jumping loads has been proposed. The results of the force plate trials were analysed in an attempt to better characterize the profile of the jump force and determine how best to approximate it. In the first proposed methodology the study is carried out in the frequency domain using an average power spectral density of the jumps. In the second proposed methodology, the jump force is decomposed into the summation of one peak with a large period and a number of peaks with smaller periods. Utilizing a similar model to that of the Sim model, the approximation will still be comprised of the summation of two quadratic cosine functions.

ABSTRACT Within the equipment that exist in the hospitals, there are very diverse performances for the correct operation of the equipment that is intended both to measure on the patient or for treatment on these same, the range of equipment available is very large, without which directly are installed or, more correctly, are implanted in the patient. The hospitals have established patterns of maintenance both corrective and preventive, also of verification of security and, in some cases, actions which are intended to check the magnitudes in the equipment. This last is not normal, in fact, in many cases, the majority, it is not known as to be able to check that the magnitudes of a computer can be traced to a pattern of national measure. The research has been developed to determine, is something that this patent up to the International Organization for Standardization (ISO), that do not exist for many teams established principles to ensure the metrological traceability gives the physical quantities in which they work during its useful life. Due to the breadth of this field, the development of research has been conducted in a pyramid format, from the needs to be able to reach a specific study of specific equipment (Clinical Thermometers, Tensiometers, Ultrasound, and Short Wave). To reach theme, has been carried out a study of how is the metrological traceability across the entire spectrum, from the management to individuals cases. Considering the large amount of existing documentation and arriving to determine the labor camp in the metrology hospital, sorting equipment and determining how are defined the methods that lead to reality the metrological traceability, in the standardization. A group not too worked for medical electrical equipment are found within the rehabilitation treatment of traumatology, being equipment of very common use in the health centers for muscle injuries and bone. In this matter has been dedicated an extra effort, with a report history of its origin and where they are now. We have studied within these teams about the treatment of ultrasound, diathermy, short wave, which are the most representative of the equipment that is destined to electro therapy, but it must be borne in mind that there are fields that have been mentioned globally of rehabilitation, as are the therapy or the biomechanics, similar to other health technologies from other specialties (radiology or clinical analysis). There is, also, within the therapy, all these treatments own gym, such as pulleys, weights, tables of massages, balls, etc… that its metrology is simple, are computers that there are means of verification of the magnitudes that used by the existence in other activities of the industry (scales, weights, etc). The research carried out has tried to assess the entire global and reach specific cases to determine the situation as it is. Arriving in the development of a classification of equipment and standards, which give us a glimpse of the metrological needs and establish a Management of the Metrological Traceability, concluding in the study for computers that have been mentioned.

ABSTRACT In this thesis, a new load model is proposed to characterize people jumping on structures and the influence of people in the dynamic properties of the structure is studied. In the study of the structural behavior of buildings such as gymnasiums, dance halls, stadiums, auditoriums or footbridges subjected to loads generated by crowd, dynamic forces must take into account, which involves the use of more complex calculation models and dimensioning criteria with new parameters. Therefore, it is necessary to determine these dynamic loads and how structures will change when they are occupied by people. In the first part of the work the problem of considering the dynamic forces in the analysis of structures is presented. The factors that influence on the interest in this type of study are indicated. The objectives of the thesis are presented and also the proposed methodology in order to achieve them. In this first part the state of the art is described. Existing jumping load models are explained and a review of the main authors and studies on this subject is done. Finally some ideas about the dynamic changes caused by the presence of people in the structures are exposed. In the second part of the thesis the proposed jumping load model is explained, including jump tests on a force plate. Test structures, a gym and a concrete slab are described. Dynamic properties identification of the test structures is detailed with the corresponding tests and Operational Modal Analysis results. Finally, a finite element model of the structure chosen for the tests is presented. In the third part of the work, the studied jump load models are validated by performing dynamic testing with people jumping and the subsequent comparison of experimental results with numerical simulations. As a last result, the influence of people on the dynamic properties of the structure is checked. For this purpose, obtained data from a test with passive people are used.

The objective of this thesis is to understand the impact of satisfaction with innovative benefits on the intention to stay of the information and communications technology industry (ICT) workers. In order to investigate this question, a general research hypothesis was presented based on a literature review and on Blau’s social exchange theory (1964) and Maslow’s theory of needs (1943). The general research hypothesis states that satisfaction with innovative benefits increases intention to stay through time. The data used in this thesis were collected as part of a larger research on the relationships between compensation, training and skills development and attracting and retaining key employees. The longitudinal data come from an office located in Montreal of a major international company from the ICT sector. The study population consists of workers newly hired between April 1st, 2009 and September 30th, 2010. The results confirm the research hypothesis showing that satisfaction with innovative benefits increase intention to stay through time. Among the various innovative benefits studied, the results indicate that it is the satisfaction with the gym at work that best predicts intention to stay of workers. Other innovative benefits significantly related to intention to stay are the games library, the lounge, the medical clinic and the library in the workplace. Also, longitudinal analyses reveal that it is mainly the differences between the individual characteristics of the employees who best explain intention to stay than the differences across time of the same worker. This thesis concludes by discussing the best way for industrial relations managers to use the results in order to retain their employees. Then, the limits of the study and some directions for further research are also presented.
