Implementation of a unified userspace time handling library under the Linux OS

An appropriate assessment of end-to-end network performance presumes highly efficient time tracking and measurement with precise time control of the stopping and resuming of program operation. In this paper, a novel approach to solving the problems of highly efficient and precise time measurements on PC-platforms and on ARM-architectures is proposed. A new unified High Performance Timer and a corresponding software library offer a unified interface to the known time counters and automatically identify the fastest and most reliable time source, available in the user space of a computing system. The research is focused on developing an approach of unified time acquisition from the PC hardware and accordingly substituting the common way of getting the time value through Linux system calls. The presented approach provides a much faster means of obtaining the time values with a nanosecond precision than by using conventional means. Moreover, it is capable of handling the sequential time value, precise sleep functions and process resuming. This ability means the reduction of wasting computer resources during the execution of a sleeping process from 100% (busy-wait) to 1-1.5%, whereas the benefits of very accurate process resuming times on long waits are maintained.

ParallelKnoppix - Rapid deployment of a linux cluster for MPI parallel processing using non-dedicated computers

This note describes ParallelKnoppix, a bootable CD that allows creation of a Linux cluster in very little time. An experienced user can create a cluster ready to execute MPI programs in less than 10 minutes. The computers used may be heterogeneous machines, of the IA-32 architecture. When the cluster is shut down, all machines except one are in their original state, and the last can be returned to its original state by deleting a directory. The system thus provides a means of using non-dedicated computers to create a cluster. An example session is documented.

Automatización de la gestión del ciclo de vida de entornos Linux y Solaris

Los requisitos del Negocio que requieren un gran crecimiento generan mayor complejidad en los Centros de Cómputo.Son los administradores quienes necesitan gestionar el creciente volumen de datos, aplicaciones, y usuarios, así como la rápida proliferación de los servidores y los diferentes sistemas operativos. En este proyecto se pretende reducir la complejidad en la gestión de los Centros de Cómputo, combinando la automatización de la gestión del ciclo de vida y todas las medidas de contingencia necesarias para mantener la integridad de los mismos.

Benchmarks i mètriques d'avaluació de plataformes encastades multimèdia

Aquest projecte compara les possibilitats per a aplicacions multimèdia d'algunes de les arquitectures de processador que podem trobar en sistemes encastats. Per fer-ho s'ha seleccionat una sèrie de benchmarks que inclouen una mostra d'aplicacions multimèdia, així com un conjunt de benchmarks que ens permet mesurar aspectes d'un sistema operatiu GNU/Linux. També s'ha determinat quines haurien de ser les principals mètriques a considerar en el context dels sistemes encastats.

Molecular detection and identification of zygomycetes species from paraffin-embedded tissues in a murine model of disseminated zygomycosis: a collaborative European Society of Clinical Microbiology and Infectious Diseases (ESCMID) Fungal Infection Study Group (EFISG) evaluation.

The present study was performed to assess the interlaboratory reproducibility of the molecular detection and identification of species of Zygomycetes from formalin-fixed paraffin-embedded kidney and brain tissues obtained from experimentally infected mice. Animals were infected with one of five species (Rhizopus oryzae, Rhizopus microsporus, Lichtheimia corymbifera, Rhizomucor pusillus, and Mucor circinelloides). Samples with 1, 10, or 30 slide cuts of the tissues were prepared from each paraffin block, the sample identities were blinded for analysis, and the samples were mailed to each of seven laboratories for the assessment of sensitivity. A protocol describing the extraction method and the PCR amplification procedure was provided. The internal transcribed spacer 1 (ITS1) region was amplified by PCR with the fungal universal primers ITS1 and ITS2 and sequenced. As negative results were obtained for 93% of the tissue specimens infected by M. circinelloides, the data for this species were excluded from the analysis. Positive PCR results were obtained for 93% (52/56), 89% (50/56), and 27% (15/56) of the samples with 30, 10, and 1 slide cuts, respectively. There were minor differences, depending on the organ tissue, fungal species, and laboratory. Correct species identification was possible for 100% (30 cuts), 98% (10 cuts), and 93% (1 cut) of the cases. With the protocol used in the present study, the interlaboratory reproducibility of ITS sequencing for the identification of major Zygomycetes species from formalin-fixed paraffin-embedded tissues can reach 100%, when enough material is available.

dEICbian: una distribució GNU/LINUX personalitzada per laboratoris de docència

En aquest projecte es desenvolupa una distribució GNU/Linux adaptada als laboratoris de docència del departament d’enginyeria de la informació i de les comunicacions. Partint de una anàlisi exhaustiu de les necessitats del departament i gràcies a la col·laboració dels seus membres s’ha realitzat la distribució dEICbian, un sistema que permetrà facilitar les tasques docents als laboratoris del departament. Amb l’objectiu de mantenir el sistema actualitzat també s’ha desenvolupat un generador de noves versions de la distribució dEICbian per tal de garantir tenir, sempre, un sistema modern i lliure d’errors als laboratoris del departament. L’opinió dels usuaris, expressada mitjançant enquestes, ha estat favorable i ara només resta el darrer pas: la seva implementació als laboratoris.

Hydrophobic labeling of (Na+,K+)-ATPase: further evidence that the beta subunit is embedded in the membrane bilayer.

O-Hexanoyl-3,5-diiodo-N-(4-azido-2-nitro-phenyl)tyramine has been used after photochemical conversion into the reactive nitrene to label (Na+,K+)-ATPase from Bufo marinus toad kidney. Immunochemical evidence indicates that the reagent labels both subunits of the enzyme in partially purified form as well as in microsomal membranes. These results support the view that the glycoprotein subunit, like the catalytic subunit, possesses hydrophobic domains by which it is integrated into the plasma membrane.

Detection of Hepatitis B Virus Antigens in Paraffin-embedded Liver Specimens from the Amazon Region, Brazil

Hepatic viscerotomy of paraffin-preserved old specimens, collected in the period from 1934 to 1967, were analyzed by immunohistochemical assays to detect hepatitis B, hepatitis D, dengue and yellow fever virus antigens. The material belongs to the Yellow Fever Collection, Department of Pathology, Instituto Oswaldo Cruz, Rio de Janeiro, Brazil and the cases were diagnosed at that time according to clinical aspects and histopathological findings reporting viral hepatitis, yellow fever, focal necrosis and hepatic atrophy. From the 79 specimens, 69 were collected at the Labrea Region and the other 10 in different other localities in the Amazon Region. The five micra thick histological slices were analyzed for the presence of hepatitis B surface antigen (HBsAg) and hepatitis B core antigen (HBcAg) by immunoperoxidase technique. An immunofluorescence assay was applied to the detection of hepatitis D, yellow fever and dengue virus antigens. Nine (11.4%) histological samples were HBsAg reactive and 5 (6.3%) were HBcAg reactive. The oldest reactive sample was from 1934. Viral antigens related to the other pathologies were not detected in this study. Our results confirm that the methodology described may be used to elucidate the aetiology of hepatitis diseases even after a long time of conservation of the specimens.

Sistema de monitorización de servidores Linux

El present projecte pretén cobrir les necessitats de monitorització d'una xarxa per definir. Principalment hauran de ser monitoritzats tant els servidors com les estacions de treball. Tots aquests hosts tindran en comú que funcionaran amb sistemes operatius GNU/Linux, intentant en la mesura del possible abastar diverses distribucions, encara que principalment es treballarà per les basades en Debian, i més concretament en Ubuntu.
