Polyimides were prepared from diamines: 2,4,6-trimethyl-1,3-phenylenediamine (3MPDA) and 2,3,4,5-tetramethyl-1,4-phenylenediamine (4MPDA). 1,4-Bis(3,4-dicarboxyphenoxy)benzene dianhydride (HQDPA), 3,3',4,4'-benzophenone tetracarboxylic dianhydride (BTDA), 3,3'-4,4'-diphenylsulphone tetracarboxylic dianhydride (SO(2)PDA), 3,3',4,4'-diphenylsulphide tetracarboxylic dianhydride (SPDA), pyromellitic dianhydride (PMDA), and 2,2'-bis(3,4-dicarboxyphenyl)hexa-fluoroisopropane dianhydride (6FDA) were used as dianhydride. The gas permeabilities of H-2, O-2 and N-2 through the polyimides were measured at temperatures from 30 degrees C to 90 degrees C. The results show that as methyl and trifluoromethyl substitution groups densities increase from 7.73 x 10(-3) molcm(-3) to 13.50 x 10(-3)molcm(-3), the peameability of H-2 increases 10-fold at 60% loss of permselectivity of H-2/N-2 however, the permeability of O-2 increases 20-fold at 20% loss of permselectivity of O-2/N-2. For O-2/N-2 separation, PMDA-3MPDA has similar performance to 6FDA-3MPDA and 6FDA-4MPDA; all have higher permeabilities for O-2 than normal polyimides, and the P(O-2)/alpha(O-2/N-2) trade-off relationships lie on the upper bound line for polymers. A new solid solution series, NdSr(1-x)M(x)NiO(4) (M = Ca: 0.0 less than or equal to x less than or equal to 1.0; M = Ba: 0.0 less than or equal to x less than or equal to 0.6), was synthesized by solid state reaction, and the structures, magnetic and electrical properties and optical spectra of this series have been studied. All the samples crystalized in tetragonal systems, with the exception of NdCaNiO4, which crystallized in the orthohombic system. IR spectra of NdSr1-xCaxNiO4 indicated that the lengths of two Ni-O bonds decrease with increasing Ca content. The electrical conduction changed from metallic-type to semiconductive-type when x greater than or equal to 0.4 (M = Ca, Ba), and the room temperature resistivities of NdSr1-xCaxNiO4 increased with the increase of Ca content. Magnetic susceptibility measurements revealed that Ni+3 ions in all the samplies were in low-spin state over the temperature range 77-300 K.

Biphenyl derivatives undergo extensive intraannular substituent migrations and subsequent intramolecular ipso substitutions giving rise to a fluorenyl cation and a biphenylene radical cation as common products in mass spectrometry. For biphenyls bearing an alkyl group, interannular substituent migration resulting in a substituted tropylium ion is also observed. Electron-withdrawing groups are found to be much more favourable to these reactions than the electron-donating ones.

In2CuO5 is isostructural to Y2Cu2O5 both in its crystal and magnetic structure. In and Y can be substituted by each other in any ratio to make new compounds Y2-xInxCu2O5 (x = 0-2) which were identified by XRD and IR spectrum. The structural change in Y2-x

The influence of the substitution of Cu or O by various elements on the magnetic properties of Y2Cu2O5 has been studied. The substitution of Cu by metal ions with unpaired d electrons (M = Co2+, Ni2+) makes the superexchange in Cu2O8 chains stronger, but

A radical aromatic substitution resulting in biphenylcarboxylic acid is inferred for the decomposition of benzoyl peroxide from the chemical ionization and collision-induced dissociation mass spectra. The thermolysis of benzoyl peroxide gives rise to a benzoyloxy radical, which undergoes rapid decarboxylation and hydrogen abstraction leading to phenyl radical and benzoic acid, respectively. Attack of the resulting phenyl radical on the benzoic acid results in bipbenylcarboxylic acid. On the other hand, the phenyl radical abstracts a hydrogen atom to yield benzene, which is then subjected to the attack of a benzoyloxy radical, affording phenyl benzoate. This substitution reaction rather than the recombination of benzoyloxy and phenyl radicals is found to be responsible for the formation of phenyl benzoate under the present conditions.

The rare earth monophthalocyanine complexes, LnPcCl and LnPc(OAc)2 (Ln = Tb, Ho, Tm, Lu, Pc=Phthalocyanine, OAc = Acetate), were synthesized. The electronic structures of the complexes have been studied by means of XPS. The experimental results of binding energies for the complexes indicate that the bonds of the complexes have a certain covalent character depending on L-->Ln charge transfer. This L-->Ln charge transfer process of phythalocyanine complexes differs from that of crown ether complexes. Both coordination and substitution are included in the former case, but only coordination in the latter. Phthalocyanine ring is an electrophilic group and its electronegativity is large. So, the O1s binding energies of coordinating oxygen atoms of acetate in LnPc(OAc)2 are larger than those of Ln(OAc)3. The magnitude of valent charge delocalized from ligand onto metal atom is dependent on electronegativity, coordination number, valence state and so on. Because coordination number of Ln in LnPc(OAc)2 is larger than that in LnPcCl and electronegativity of Clin LnPcCl is larger than that of O in LnPc(OAc)2, the Ln4d5/2 binding energies of LnPc (OAc)2 are less than those of LnPcCl.

The two major incretin hormones, glucagon-like peptide-1 (GLP-1), and glucose-dependent insulinotropic polypeptide (GIP), are currently being considered as prospective drug candidates for treatment of type 2 diabetes. Interest in these gut hormones was initially spurred by their potent insulinotropic activities, but a number of other antihyperglycaemic actions are now established. One of the foremost barriers in progressing GLP-1 and GIP to the clinic concerns their rapid degradation and inactivation by the ubiquitous enzyme, dipeptidyl peptidase IV (DPP IV). Here, we compare the DPP IV resistance and biological properties of Abu(8)/ Abu(2) (2-aminobutyric acid) substituted analogues of GLP-1 and GIP engineered to impart DPP IV resistance. Whereas (Abu(8))GLP-1 was completely stable to human plasma (half-life > 12h), GLP-1, GIP, and (Abu(2))GIP were rapidly degraded (half-lives: 6.2, 6.0, and 7.1 h, respectively). Native GIP, GLP-1, and particularly (Abu(8))GLP-1 elicited significant adenylate cyclase and insulinotropic activity, while (Abu(2))GIP was less effective. Similarly, in obese diabetic (ob/ob) mice, GIP, GLP-1, and (Abu(8))GLP-1 displayed substantial glucose-lowering and insulin -releasing activities, whereas (Abu(2))GIP was only weakly active. These studies illustrate divergent effects of penultimate amino acid Ala(8)/Ala(2) substitution with Abu on the biological properties of GLP-1 and GIP, suggesting that (Abu(8))GLP-1 represents a potential candidate for future therapeutic development. The coronavirus main protease, Mpro, is considered a major target for drugs suitable to combat coronavirus infections including the severe acute respiratory syndrome (SARS). In this study, comprehensive HPLC- and FRET-substrate-based screenings of various electrophilic compounds were performed to identify potential Mpro inhibitors. The data revealed that the coronaviral main protease is inhibited by aziridine- and oxirane-2-carboxylates. Among the trans-configured aziridine-2,3-dicarboxylates the Gly-Gly-containing peptide 2c was found to be the most potent inhibitor.
