In order to understand the behavior of pretilachlor, a popular rice herbicide in the world, and a synergetic active ingredient, dimethametryn, a monitoring study was conducted in 3 paddy plots in Kyushu region, Japan. The monitoring indicated different behaviors for both pesticides from those reported in the literature. Maximum concentrations of pretilachlor and dimethametryn were 1 order of magnitude lower than the values observed in previous studies. However, the dissipation rates estimated from monitoring data were in agreement with other studies in Japan. The pesticide product was tested and showed good dissolution of pretilachlor and dimethametryn in water, suggesting that another study is needed to explain the low concentrations of the two pesticides in the fields. Besides pesticide behaviors, it was observed from the monitoring that water management in paddy rice cultivation still requires more attention to reduce the environmental risk of rice pesticides.

Eight small-scale lysimeters with different excess water storage depths (EWSDs) were used to investigate the behavior of two herbicides, simetryn and thiobencarb, under paddy conditions. The concentration of simetryn dissipated similarly in all the lysimeters, while the thiobencarb concentration varied significantly because thiobencarb can adsorb onto the dissolved organic matter in a manure slurry, which was applied to six of the lysimeters. The herbicide losses (the percentage of the applied mass) from the lysimeters were reversely proportional with the EWSD. The correlation was stronger for simetryn than for thiobencarb. An appropriate EWSD is required to effectively prevent herbicide run-off from the paddy field, especially when a rainfall event occurs soon after herbicide application.

Objective: Attention deficit hyperactivity disorder (ADHD) is a life-long condition, but because of its historical status as a self-remitting disorder of childhood, empirically validated and reliable methods for the assessment of adults are scarce. In this study, the validity and reliability of the Wender Utah Rating Scale (WURS) and the Adult Problem Questionnaire (APQ), which survey childhood and current symptoms of ADHD, respectively, were studied in a Finnish sample. Methods: The self-rating scales were administered to adults with an ADHD diagnosis (n = 38), healthy control participants (n = 41), and adults diagnosed with dyslexia (n = 37). Items of the self-rating scales were subjected to factor analyses, after which the reliability and discriminatory power of the subscales, derived from the factors, were examined. The effects of group and gender on the subscales of both rating scales were studied. Additionally, the effect of age on the subscales of the WURS was investigated. Finally, the diagnostic accuracy of the total scores was studied. Results: On the basis of the factor analyses, a four-factor structure for the WURS and five-factor structure for the APQ had the best fit to the data. All of the subscales of the APQ and three of the WURS achieved sufficient reliability. The ADHD group had the highest scores on all of the subscales of the APQ, whereas two of the subscales of the WURS did not statistically differ between the ADHD and the Dyslexia group. None of the subscales of the WURS or the APQ was associated with the participant's gender. However, one subscale of the WURS describing dysthymia was positively correlated with the participant's age. With the WURS, the probability of a correct positive classification was .59 in the current sample and .21 when the relatively low prevalence of adult ADHD was taken into account. The probabilities of correct positive classifications with the APQ were .71 and .23, respectively. Conclusions: The WURS and the APQ can provide accurate and reliable information of childhood and adult ADHD symptoms, given some important constraints. Classifications made on the basis of the total scores are reliable predictors of ADHD diagnosis only in populations with a high proportion of ADHD and a low proportion of other similar disorders. The subscale scores can provide detailed information of an individual's symptoms if the characteristics and limitations of each domain are taken into account. Improvements are suggested for two subscales of the WURS.

Purpose: To determine the distribution of peripheral refraction, including astigmatism, in 7- and 14-year-old Chinese children. Methods: 2134 7-year-old and 1780 14-year-old children were measured with cycloplegic central and horizontal peripheral refraction (15° and 30° at temporal and nasal visual fields). Results: 7- and 14-year-old children included 9 and 594, respectively, with moderate and high myopia (≤−3.0 D), 259 and 831 with low myopia (−2.99 to −0.5 D), 1207 and 305 with emmetropia (−0.49 to +1.0 D), and 659 and 50 with hyperopia (>1.0 D), respectively. Myopic children had relative peripheral hyperopia while hyperopic and emmetropic children had relative peripheral myopia, with greater changes in relative peripheral refraction occurring in the nasal than the temporal visual field. The older group had the greater relative peripheral hyperopia and higher peripheral J180. Both age groups showed positive slopes of J45 across the visual field, with greater slopes in the older group. Conclusions: Myopic children in mainland China have relative peripheral hyperopia while hyperopic and emmetropic children have relative peripheral myopia. Significant differences exist between 7- and 14-year-old children, with the latter showing more relative peripheral hyperopia, greater rate of change in J45 across the visual field, and higher peripheral J180.

The layered double hydroxides (LDHs) of Co with trivalent cations decompose irreversibly to yield oxides with the spinel structure. Spinel formation is aided by the oxidation of Co(II) to Co(III) in the ambient atmosphere. When the decomposition is carried out under N-2, the oxidation of Co(II) is suppressed, and the resulting oxide has the rock salt structure. Thus, the Co-Al-CO32-/Cl- LDHs yield oxides of the type Co1- Al-x(2x/3)rectangle O-x/3, which are highly metastable, given the large defect concentration. This defect oxide rapidly reverts back to the original hydroxide on soaking in a Na2CO3 solution. Interlayer NO3- anions, on the other hand, decompose generating a highly oxidizing atmosphere, whereby the Co-Al-NO3- LDH decomposes to form the spinel phase even in a N-2 atmosphere. The oxide with the defect rock salt structure formed by the thermal decomposition of the Co-Fe-CO32- LDH under N2, on soaking in a Na2CO3 solution, follows a different kinetic pathway and undergoes a solution transformation into the inverse spinel Co(Co, Fe)(2)O-4. Fe3+ has a low octahedral crystal field stabilization energy and therefore prefers the tetrahedral coordination offered by the structure of the inverse spinel rather than the octahedral coordination of the parent LDH. Similar considerations do not hold in the case of Ga- and In-containing LDHs, given the considerable barriers to the diffusion of M3+ (M=Ga, In) from octahedral to tetrahedral sites owing to their large size. Consequently, the In-containing oxide residue reverts back to the parent hydroxide, whereas this reconstruction is partial in the case of the Ga-containing oxide. These studies show that the reversible thermal behavior offers a competing kinetic pathway to spinel formation. Suppression of the latter induces the reversible behavior in an LDH that otherwise decomposes irreversibly to the spinel.

The asymmetric stress strain behavior under tension/compression in an initial < 100 > B-2-NiAl nanowire is investigated considering two different surface configurations i.e., < 100 >/(0 1 0) (0 0 1) and < 100 >/(0 1 1) (0 - 1 1). This behavior is attributed to two different deformation mechanisms namely a slip dominated deformation under compression and a known twinning dominated deformation under tension. It is also shown that B2 -> BCT (body-centered-tetragonal) phase transformation under tensile loading is independent of the surface configurations for an initial < 100 > oriented NiAl nanowire. Under tensile loading, the nanowire undergoes a stress-induced martensiticphase transformation from an initial B2 phase to BCT phase via twinning along {110} plane with failure strain of similar to 0.30. On the other hand, a compressive loading causes failure of these nanowires via brittle fracture after compressive yielding, with a maximum failure strain of similar to-0.12. Such brittle fracture under compressive loading occurs via slip along {110} plane without any phase transformations. Softening/hardening behavior is also reported for the first time in these nanowires under tensile/compressive loadings, which cause asymmetry in their yield strength behavior in the stress strain space. Result shows that a sharp increase in energy with increasing strain under compressive loading causes hardening of the nanowire, and hence, gives improved yield strength as compared to tensile loading. Polymer nanocomposites containing different concentrations of Au nanoparticles have been investigated by small angle X-ray scattering and electronic absorption spectroscopy. The variation in the surface plasmon resonance (SPR) band of Au nanoparticles with concentration is described by a scaling law. The variation in the plasmon band of ReO3 nanoparticles embedded in polymers also follows a similar scaling law. Sistance dependence of plasmon coupling in polymer composites f metal nanoparticles. Expressions for various second-order derivatives of surface tension with respect to composition at infinite dilution in terms of the interaction parameters of the surface and those of the bulk phases of dilute ternary melts have been presented. A method of deducing the parameters, which consists of repeated differentiation of Butler's equations with subsequent application of the appropriate boundary conditions, has been developed. The present investigation calculates the surface tension and adsorption functions of the Fe-S-O melts at 1873 and 1923 K using the modified form of Butler's equations and the derived values for the surface interaction parameters of the system. The calculated values are found to be in good agreement with those of the experimental data of the system. The present analysis indicates that the energetics of the surface phase are considerably different from those of the bulk phase. The present research investigates a critical compositional range beyond which the surface tension increases with temperature. The observed increase in adsorption of sulfur with consequent desorption of oxygen as a function of temperature above the critical compositional range has been ascribed to the increase of activity ratios of oxygen to sulfur in the surface relative to those in the bulk phase of the system.

We present results of measurements of temperature and wavevector dependent dynamics in binary mixtures of soft polymer grafted nanoparticles and linear homopolymers. We find evidence of melting of the dynamically arrested state of the soft nanocolloids with addition of linear polymers followed by a re-entrant slowing down of the dynamics with further increase in polymer density, depending on the size ratio, delta, of the polymers and the nanocolloids. For higher delta the re-entrant behavior is not observed, even for the highest added polymer density, explored here. Possible explanation of the observed dynamics in terms of the presence of a double - glass phase is provided. (C) 2011 American Institute of Physics. [doi:10.1063/1.3644930]

We perform atomistic simulations on the fracture behavior of two typical metallic glasses, one brittle (FeP) and the other ductile (CuZr), and show that brittle fracture in the FeP glass is governed by an intrinsic cavitation mechanism near crack tips in contrast to extensive shear banding in the ductile CuZr glass. We show that a high degree of atomic scale spatial fluctuations in the local properties is the main reason for the observed cavitation behavior in the brittle metallic glass. Our study corroborates with recent experimental observations of nanoscale cavity nucleation found on the brittle fracture surfaces of metallic glasses and provides important insights into the root cause of the ductile versus brittle behavior in such materials.
