Thin films of nano-composite Y-Ba-Cu-O (YBCO) superconductors containing nano-sized, non-superconducting particles of Y2Ba 4CuMOx (M-2411 with M = Ag and Nb) have been prepared by the PLD technique. Electron backscatter diffraction (EBSD) has been used to analyze the crystallographic orientation of nano-particles embedded in the film microstructure. The superconducting YBa2Cu3O7 (Y-123) phase matrix is textured with a dominant (001) orientation for all samples, whereas the M-2411 phase exhibits a random orientation. Angular critical current measurements at various temperature (T) and applied magnetic field (B) have been performed on thin films containing different concentration of the M-2411 second phase. An increase in critical current density J c at T < 77 K and B < 6 T is observed for samples with low concentration of the second phase (2 mol % M-2411). Films containing 5 mol % Ag-2411 exhibit lower Jc than pure Y-123 thin films at all fields and temperatures. Samples with 5 mol % Nb-2411 show higher Jc(B) than phase pure Y-123 thin films for T < 77 K. © 2010 IOP Publishing Ltd.

The conversion of silver nanoparticle (NP) paste films into highly conductive films at low sintering temperature is an important requirement for the developing areas of additive fabrication and printed electronics. Ag NPs with a diameter of ∼10 nm were prepared via an improved chemical process to produce viscous paste with a high wt%. The paste consisted of as-prepared Ag NP and an organic vehicle of ethylcellulose that was deposited on glass and Si substrates using a contact lithographic technique. The morphology and conductivity of the imprinted paste film were measured as a function of sintering temperature, sintering time and the percentage ratio of Ag NP and ethylcellulose. The morphology and conductivity were examined using scanning electron microscopy (SEM) and a two-point probe electrical conductivity measurement. The results show that the imprinted films were efficiently converted into conducting states when exposed to sintering temperature in the range of 200-240 °C, this temperature is lower than the previously reported values for Ag paste. © 2010 Elsevier B.V. A semicrystalline composite, 3, 4, 9, 10 perylenetetracarboxylic dianhydride (PTCDA) doped N,N'-di(1-naphthyl)-N,N'-diphenylbenzidine (NPB), has been fabricated and characterized. An organic light-emitting diode using such a composite in hole injection exhibits the improved performance as compared with the reference device using neat NPB in hole injection. For example, at a luminance of 2000 cd/m(2), the former device gives a current efficiency of 2.0cd/A, higher than 1.6cd/A obtained from the latter device. Furthermore, the semicrystalline composite has been shown thermally to be more stable than the neat NPB thin film, which is useful for making organic light emitting diodes with a prolonged lifetime.

A novel electroluminescence oxide phosphor (Gd2O3-Ga2O3):Ce has been prepared by electron beam evaporation. The emission peaks of photoluminescence lie at 390nm and a shoulder at 440nm. However, the electroluminescence of the (Gd2O3-Ga2O3):Ce thin film have four emission peaks at 358nm, 390nm, 439nm and 510nm, respectively. The optical absorption of (Gd2O3-Ga2O3):Ce thin film and the photoluminescence of composite materials with various ratios of Ga2O3/(Gd2O3+Ga2O3) have also been described to investigate the origin of emission of photoluminescence and electroluminescence.

Porous polytetrafluoroethylene (PTFE) membranes were used as support material for Nafion((R))/PTFE composite membranes. The composite membranes were synthesized by impregnating porous PTFE membranes with a self-made Nafion solution. The resulting composite membranes were mechanically durable and quite thin relative to traditional perfluorosulfonated ionomer membranes (PFSI); we expect the composite membranes to be of low resistance and cost. In this study, we used three kinds of porous PTFE films to prepare Nafion/PTFE composite membranes of different thickness. Scanning electron micrographs and oxygen permeabilities showed that Nafion resin is distributed uniformly in the composite membrane and completely plug the micropores, there is a continuous thin Nation film present on the PTFE surface. The variation in water content of the composite and Nafion 115 membranes with temperature was determined. At the same temperature, water content of the composite membranes was smaller than that of the Nafion 115. In both dry and wet conditions, maximum strength and break strength of C-325(#) and C-345(#) were larger than those of Nafion 112 due to the reinforcing effect of the porous PTFE films. And the PEMFC performances and the lifetime of the composite membranes were also tested on the self-made apparatus. Results showed that the bigger the porosity of the substrate PTFE films, the better the fuel cell performance; the fuel cell performances of the thin composite membranes were superior to that of Nation 115 membrane; and after 180 h stability test at 500 mA/cm(2), the cell voltage showed no obvious drop. Multilayer film of laccase, poly-L-lysine (PLL) and multi-walled carbon nanotubes (MWNTs) were prepared by a layer-by-layer self-assembly technique. The results of the UV-vis spectroscopy and scanning electron microscopy studies demonstrated a uniform growth of the multilayer. The catalytic behavior of the modified electrode was investigated. The (MWNTs/PLL/laccase)(n) multilayer modified electrode catalyzed four-electron reduction of O-2 to water, without any mediator.

Most nanofiltration (NF) membranes are composite and have a polyamide thin film prepared by interfacial polymerization. Their performances mainly correlate the structure of the thin film and monomers used for its preparation. In this work, a novel thin-film composite (TFC) nanofiltration membrane was successfully prepared from 3,3',5,5'-biphenyl tetraacyl chloride (mm-BTEC) and piperazine (PIP) through interfacial polymerization. Attenuated reflectance infrared (ATR-IR) and X-ray photoelectronic spectroscopy (XPS) were used to characterize the chemical composition of the membrane surface. The membrane performance was optimized by studying preparation parameters including monomer concentration, reaction time, and pH of aqueous phase.

Multiwalled carbon nanotubes@SnO2-Au (MWCNTs@SnO2-Au) composite was synthesized by a chemical route. The structure and composition of the MWCNTs@SnO2-Au composite were confirmed by means of transmission electron microscopy, X-ray photoelectron and Raman spectroscopy. Due to the good electrocatalytic property of MWCNTs@SnO2-Au composite, a glucose biosensor was constructed by absorbing glucose oxidase (GOD) on the hybrid material. A direct electron transfer process is observed at the MWCNTs@SnO2-Au/GOD-modified glassy carbon electrode. The glucose biosensor has a linear range from 4.0 to 24.0 mM, which is suitable for glucose determination by real samples. It should be worthwhile noting that, from 4.0 to 12.0 mM, the cathodic peak currents of the biosensor decrease linearly with increasing the glucose concentrations in human blood. Meanwhile, the resulting biosensor can also prevent the effects of interfering species.

An approach was reported to synthesize silica hybridized ruthenium bipyridyl complex through amidation reaction by covalent attachment of bis(bipyridyl)-4,4'-dicarboxy-2,2'-bipyridyl-ruthenium to (3-aminopropyl)-triethoxysilane. The hybrid complex then was gelatinized through acid catalytic hydrolysis method and a sol-gel modified indium, tin oxide electrode was prepared via spin coating technique. As prepared indium tin oxide electrode possesses good stability therein with excellent electrochemiluminescence behavior.

Adsorption of polyethyleneimine (PEI)-metal ion complexes onto the surfaces of carbon nanotubes (CNTs) and subsequent reduction of the metal ion leads to the fabrication of one-dimensional CNT/metal nanoparticle (CNT/M NP) heterogeneous nanostructures. Alternating adsorption of PEI-metal ion complexes and CNTs on substrates results in the formation of multilayered CNT films. After exposing the films to NaBH4, three-dimensional CNT composite films embedded with metal nanoparticles (NPs) are obtained. UV-visible spectroscopy, scanning electron microscopy, and X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy are used to characterize the film assembly. The resulting (CNT/M NP)(n) films inherit the properties from both the metal NPs and CNTs that exhibit unique performance in surface-enhanced Raman scattering (SERS) and electrocatalytic activities to the reduction of O-2; as a result, they are more attractive compared to (CNT/polyelectrolyte)(n) and (NP/polyelectrolyte)(n) films because of their multifunctionality.

Poly(3-butylthiophene) (P3BT)/insulating-polymer composites with high electrical conductivity have been prepared directly from the solution. These composites exhibit much higher conductivity compared to pure P3BT with the same preparation method provided that P3BT content is higher than 10 wt %. Morphological studies on both the pure P3BT and the composites with insulating polymer show that P3BT highly crystallizes and develops into whisker-like crystals. These nanowires are homogeneously distributed within the insulating polymer matrix and form conductive networks, which provide both extremely large interface area between conjugated polymer and insulating polymer matrix and highly efficient conductive channels through out the whole composite. In contrast, the conductivity enhancement of P3HT/PS composite is not so obvious and drops down immediately with increased PS content due mainly to the absence of highly crystalline whisker-like crystals and much larger scale phase separation between the components. The results presented here could further illuminate the origin of conductivity formation in organic semiconducting composites and promote applications of these polymer semiconductor/insulator composites in the fields of organic (opto-)electronics, electromagnetic shielding, and antistatic materials.

The organic-inorganic hybrid, PSS-silica composite material was developed for the immobilization of tris(2,2'-bipyridyl)ruthenium(II) (Ru(bpy)(3)(2+)) on glassy carbon electrode via ion-exchange (PSS stands for poly(sodium 4-styrene-sulfonate)). The electrochemiluminescence (ECL) and electrochemistry of Ru(bpy)(3)(2-) immobilized in the composite thin films have been investigated with tripropylamine (TPA) as the coreactant. The immobilized Ru(bpy)(3)(2-) underwent a surface process. The modified electrode was used for the ECL detection of TPA and showed high sensitivity. Detection limit was 0,1 mumol L-1 for TPA (S/N = 3) with a linear range from 0.5 mumol L-1 to 5 mmol L-1 (R = 0.998), Moreover, the resulting modified electrode was stable over six months and the good stability may be due to the strong interaction between Ru(bpy)(3)(2-) and the high ion-exchange able PSS-silica composite films on GCE. Compared with other materials. the PSS-silica composite films containing incorporated Ru(bpy)(3)(2-) showed improved sensitivity and long-term stability, Thus, such composite thin film can be a promising material for the construction of ECL sensor.

Photoluminescent organic-inorganic composite films incorporating the rare-earth-containing polyoxometalate Na-9[EuW10O36] (EW) and poly(allylamine hydrochloride) (PAH) have been prepared by the layer-by-layer self-assembly method. UV-vis spectroscopy and ellipsometry were used to follow the fabrication process of the EW/PAH composite films. The experimental results show that the deposition process is linear and highly reproducible from layer to layer. An average EW/PAH bilayer thickness of ca. 2.1 nm was determined by ellipsometry. In addition, scanning electron microscopy and atomic force microscopy images of the EW/PAH composite films indicate that the film surface is relatively uniform and smooth. The photoluminescent properties of these films were investigated by fluorescence spectroscopy.

A new class of polyoxomelalate (POM)-modified electrodes is fabricated by the sol-gel technique and demonstrated for nitrite sensing. The electrode material comprises an interconnected dispersion of graphite powder and a uniform dispersion of isopolymolybdic anions (Mo8O26) in a porous methylsilicate matrix. The chemically modified electrodes showed well-defined cyclic voltammograms with three reversible redox couples in acidic aqueous solutions because of the good physicochemical compatibility of Mo8O26 and the carbon ceramic matrix. The Mo8O26-modified electrodes show good stability and reproducibility, especially the renewal repeatability by simple polishing in the event of surface fouling. (C) 2000 Elsevier Science Ltd. A conductive carbon ceramic composite electrode (CCE) comprised of cc-type 1:12 phosphomolybdic acid (PMo12) and carbon powder in an organically modified silicate matrix was fabricated using a sol-gel method and characterized by scanning electron microscopy, cyclic voltammetry, and Osteryoung square-wave voltammetry. Osteryoung square-wave voltammograms of the modified electrode immersed in different acidic aqueous solutions present the dependence of current and redox potential on pH. The PMo12-doped CCE shows more reversible reaction kinetics, good stability and reproducibility, especially the renewal repeatability by simple polishing in the event of surface fouling or dopant leaching. Moreover, the modified electrode shows good catalytic activity for the electrochemical reduction of bromate.
