Single-phase LaNi1-xMnxO3 samples in the compositional range 0toner-enhanced Pauli paramagnetism of the metallic solvent for x=0.01 with a smooth transition to Mn3+ solute ions and a spontaneously magnetised solvent conduction band at x=0.05. Below 200K, the x=0.05 sample forms superparamagnetic clusters, and below 40K there is evidence for an antiferromagnet spin-density wave. Comparisons with LaCo0.95Mn0.05O3 and La0.98Sr0.02CoO3 confirm that the long-range magnetic coupling occurs via solvent electrons in a narrow conduction band. The conductivity changes from that of a narrow-band metal for x<0.01 to that more characteristic of diffusive motion for x>0.05, but any motional enthalpy appears to remain small ( Delta Hm approximately=0). The x=0.1 sample exhibits ferrimagnetic spin glass behaviour below 40K, and the ferromagnetic interactions increase with manganese concentration. The oxide with x=0.50 is ferromagnetic with a well defined Curie temperature.

ARTIST STATEMENT VIBRANTe 2.0 was inspired by a research project for Parkinson’s disease patients aimed at developing a wearable device to collect relevant data for patients and medical health professionals. Vibrante is a Spanish word that translates to vibrant; literally meaning shaking or vibrations. Vibrante also has a dual meaning including vibrancy, energy, activity, and liveliness. Parkinson’s can be a debilitating disease, but it does not mean the person has to lose energy, activeness or vibrancy. As technology moves from being worn to becoming implantable and completely hidden within the body, the very notion of its physicality becomes difficult to grasp. While the human body hides implantable technology, VIBRANTe 2.0 intentionally hides the human body by making it invisible to reveal the technology stitched within. Wires become veins, delivering lifeblood to the technology inside, allowing it to pulsate and exist, while motherboards become networked hubs by which information is transferred through and within the body, performing functions that mirror and often surpass human performance capabilities. Ultimately, VIBRANTe 2.0 seeks to prompt the viewer to reflect on the potential ramifications of the complete immersion of technology into the human body. CONTEXT Technology is increasingly penetrating all aspects of our environment, and the rapid uptake of devices that live near, on or in our bodies is facilitating radical new ways of working, relating and socialising. Such technology, with its capacity to generate previously unimaginable levels of data, offers the potential to provide life-augmenting levels of interactivity. However, the absorption of technology into the very fabric of clothes, accessories and even bodies begins to dilute boundaries between physical, technological and social spheres, generating genuine ethical and privacy concerns and potentially having implications for human evolution. Embedding technology into the fabric of our clothes, accessories, and even the body enable the acquisition of and the connection to vast amounts of data about people and environments in order to provide life-augmenting levels of interactivity. Wearable sensors for example, offer the potential for significant benefits in the future management of our wellbeing. Fitness trackers such as ‘Fitbit’ and ‘Garmen’ provide wearers with the ability to monitor their personal fitness indicators while other wearables provide healthcare professionals with information that improves diagnosis and observation of medical conditions. This exhibition aimed to illustrate this shifting landscape through a selection of experimental wearable and interactive works by local, national and international artists and designers. The exhibition will also provide a platform for broader debate around wearable technology, our mediated future-selves and human interactions in this future landscape. Antennas are a necessary and critical component of communications and radar systems, but their inability to adjust to new operating scenarios can sometimes limit the system performance. Reconfigurable antennas capable of radiating in only specific desired directions can ameliorate these restrictions and help to achieve increased functionality in applications like direction finding and beam steering. This paper presents the design simulation, fabrication and measurement of a wide-band, horizontally polarized, direction reconfigurable microstrip antenna operating at 2.45 GHz. The design employs a central horizontally polarized omnidirectional active element surrounded by electronically reconfigurable parasitic microstrip elements, controlled by PIN diodes acting as RF switches. Experimental results show that the reconfigurable antenna has a bandwidth of 40% (2-3 GHz), with 3 dB gain in the desired direction and capable of steering over the 360° range.

0.85PbMg(1/3)Nb(2/3)O(3)-0.15PbTiO(3) ferroelectric-relaxor thin films have been deposited on La(0.5)nSr(0.5)CoO(3)/(1 1 1) Pt/TiO(2)/SiO(2)/Si by pulsed laser ablation at various oxygen partial pressures in the range 0.05 to 0.4 Torr. All the films have a rhombohedral perovskite structure. The grain morphology and orientation are drastically affected by the oxygen pressure, studied by x-ray diffraction and scanning electron microscopy. The domain structure investigations by dynamic contact electrostatic force microscopy have revealed that the distribution of polar nanoregions and their dynamics is influenced by the grain morphology, orientation and more importantly, oxygen vacancies. The correlation length extracted from autocorrelation function images has shown that the polarization disorder decreases with oxygen pressure up to 0.3 Torr. The presence of polarized domains and their electric field induced switching is discussed in terms of internal bias field and domain wall pinning. Film deposited at 0.4 Torr presents a curious case with unique triangular grain morphology and large polarization disorder.

Charts relating the capacitance to the width, spacing, thickness and height above the ground plane of coupled microstrips have been obtained. These are used to design hairpin line and hybrid hairpin line filters as well as multiplexers using microstrip comb line filters. The experimental results agree reasonably well with the design specifications. Getsinger's original charts for parallel coupled bars between parallel plates have been formulated for the microstrip case. Corresponding charts relating the capacitances to the width, spacing, thickness and height above the ground plane of coupled microstrips have been obtained. Examples of the use of these charts are shown in the design of hairpin lines and hybrid hairpin line filters as well as multiplexers using comb line filters. The hairpin line/hybrid hairpin line filters were designed to operate at a central frequency of 9÷5 GHz with 11 per cent bandwidth and 0÷5 dB ripple. The three filters constituting the comb line filters have center frequencies of 2÷4, 3÷0 and 3÷6 GHz. The components so designed were fabricated and tested. The dielectric used for the microstrip was teflon. Experimental curves for the attenuation (insertion loss) and VSWR are given. The design specifications arc satisfied quite well.

Chalcopyrite Cu(In,Al)Se-2 (CIAS) thin films are grown on stainless steel substrate through one-step electrodeposition at room temperature. Indium is partially replaced with aluminum to increase the band gap of CuInSe2 without creating significant change in the original structure. The deposition potential is optimized at -0.8 V (vs. SCE) and annealing of the films is performed in vacuum to remove binary phases present in the as-deposited films. In/Al ratio is varied from 1/9 to 8/2, to find the suitability for solar cell fabrication. For In/Al ratio of less than 8/2, CuAlSe2 phase is formed in the film in addition to the CIAS phase. Depth profile X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy analysis of the CIAS sample prepared with In/Al ratio of 8/2 in the precursor solution confirmed the existence of single phase CIAS throughout the film. This film showed p-type conductivity while the rest of the samples with In/Al ratio less than 8/2 showed n-type conductivity. The band gap of the film varied from 1.06 to 1.45 eV, with variation in deposition potential. Structural, optical, morphological, compositional and electrical characterizations are carried out to establish the suitability of this film for solar cell fabrication. (C) 2013 Elsevier B.V. The intensities and relative abundances of galactic cosmic ray protons and antiprotons have been measured with the Isotope Matter Antimatter Experiment (IMAX), a balloon-borne magnet spectrometer. The IMAX payload had a successful flight from Lynn Lake, Manitoba, Canada on July 16, 1992. Particles detected by IMAX were identified by mass and charge via the Cherenkov-Rigidity and TOP-Rigidity techniques, with measured rms mass resolution ≤0.2 amu for Z=1 particles.

Cosmic ray antiprotons are of interest because they can be produced by the interactions of high energy protons and heavier nuclei with the interstellar medium as well as by more exotic sources. Previous cosmic ray antiproton experiments have reported an excess of antiprotons over that expected solely from cosmic ray interactions.

Analysis of the flight data has yielded 124405 protons and 3 antiprotons in the energy range 0.19-0.97 GeV at the instrument, 140617 protons and 8 antiprotons in the energy range 0.97-2.58 GeV, and 22524 protons and 5 antiprotons in the energy range 2.58-3.08 GeV. These measurements are a statistical improvement over previous antiproton measurements, and they demonstrate improved separation of antiprotons from the more abundant fluxes of protons, electrons, and other cosmic ray species.

When these results are corrected for instrumental and atmospheric background and losses, the ratios at the top of the atmosphere are p/p=3.21(+3.49, -1.97)x10^(-5) in the energy range 0.25-1.00 GeV, p/p=5.38(+3.48, -2.45) x10^(-5) in the energy range 1.00-2.61 GeV, and p/p=2.05(+1.79, -1.15) x10^(-4) in the energy range 2.61-3.11 GeV. The corresponding antiproton intensities, also corrected to the top of the atmosphere, are 2.3(+2.5, -1.4) x10^(-2) (m^2 s sr GeV)^(-1), 2.1(+1.4, -1.0) x10^(-2) (m^2 s sr GeV)^(-1), and 4.3(+3.7, -2.4) x10^(-2) (m^2 s sr GeV)^(-1) for the same energy ranges.

The IMAX antiproton fluxes and antiproton/proton ratios are compared with recent Standard Leaky Box Model (SLBM) calculations of the cosmic ray antiproton abundance. According to this model, cosmic ray antiprotons are secondary cosmic rays arising solely from the interaction of high energy cosmic rays with the interstellar medium. The effects of solar modulation of protons and antiprotons are also calculated, showing that the antiproton/proton ratio can vary by as much as an order of magnitude over the solar cycle. When solar modulation is taken into account, the IMAX antiproton measurements are found to be consistent with the most recent calculations of the SLBM. No evidence is found in the IMAX data for excess antiprotons arising from the decay of galactic dark matter, which had been suggested as an interpretation of earlier measurements. Furthermore, the consistency of the current results with the SLBM calculations suggests that the mean antiproton lifetime is at least as large as the cosmic ray storage time in the galaxy (~10^7 yr, based on measurements of cosmic ray ^(10)Be). Recent measurements by two other experiments are consistent with this interpretation of the IMAX antiproton results.

In order to determine the properties of the bicycloheptatrienyl anion (Ia) (predicted to be conjugatively stabilized by Hückel Molecular Orbital Theory) the neutral precursor, bicyclo[3. 2. 0] hepta-1, 4, 6-triene (I) was prepared by the following route.

Reaction of I with potassium-t-butoxide, potassium, or lithium dicyclohexylamide gave anion Ia in very low yield. Reprotonation of I was found to occur solely at the 1 or 5 position to give triene II, isolated as to its dimers.

A study of the acidity of I and of other conjugated hydrocarbons by means of ion cyclotron resonance spectroscopy resulted in determination of the following order of relative acidities:

H2S ˃ C5H6 ˃ CH3NO2 ˃ 1, 4- C5H8 ˃ I ˃ C2H5OH ˃ H2O; cyclo-C7H8 ˃ C2 H5OH; фCH3 ˃ CH3OH

In addition, limits for the proton affinities of the conjugate bases were determined:

350 kcal/mole ˂ PA(C5 H5-) ˂ 360 kcal/mole

362 kcal/mole ˂ PA(C5H7-, Ia, cyclo-C7H7-) ˂ 377 kcal/mole PA(фCH2-) ˂ 385 kcal/mole

Gas phase kinetics of the trans-XVIII to I transformation gave the following activation parameters: Ea = 43.0 kcal/mole, log A = 15.53 and ∆Sǂ (220°) = 9.6 cu. The results were interpreted as indicating initial 1,2 bond cleavage to give the 1,3-diradical which closed to I. Similar studies on cis-XVIII gave results consistent with a surface component to the reaction (Ea = 22.7 kcal/mole; log A = 9.23, ∆Sǂ (119°) = -18.9 eu).

The low pressure (0.01 to 1 torr) pyrolysis of trans-XVIII gave in addition to I, fulvenallene (LV), ethynylcyclopentadiene (LVI) and heptafulvalene (LVII). The relative ratios of the C7H6 isomers were found to be dependent upon temperature and pressure, higher relative pressure and lower temperatures favoring formation of I. The results were found to be consistent with the intermediacy of vibrationally excited I and subsequent reaction to give LV and LVI.

A obesidade é uma doença crônica não transmissível, caracterizada pelo excesso de gordura corporal. Então, a gordura acumulada na região abdominal promove resistência à insulina e conseqüentemente alterações metabólicas as quais em conjunto configuram o quadro de síndrome metabólica (SM). O genótipo Pro12Pro parece estar relacionado à menor sensibilidade à insulina, desencadeando o processo fisiopatológico da SM. Então, o objetivo deste trabalho foi avaliar o efeito de uma dieta hipocalórica sobre o perfil metabólico e composição corporal de mulheres com e sem SM com genótipo Pro12Pro no gene PPARγ2. O presente estudo trata-se de um ensaio clínico, onde mulheres entre 30 e 45 anos, obesas grau I, sem SM (n=23) e com SM (n=7) foram submetidas à dieta hipocalórica por 90 dias. A identificação do genótipo foi realizada por reação em cadeia da polimerase (PCR). No início e nos dias 30, 60 e 90 foram avaliados peso corporal, massa magra (MM), massa gorda (MG), componentes da SM, uricemia, insulinemia, leptinemia, adiponectinemia, os índices HOMA-IR e QUICKI. O consumo energético foi avaliado nas 12 semanas de tratamento. Foi utilizado o teste t de Student para amostras independentes foi utilizado para comparar os grupos entre si, e o modelo pareado para comparar a evolução dentro de cada grupo em relação ao início do estudo. Todas as mulheres apresentaram genótipo Pro12Pro. O grupo com SM apresentou menor HDL-c (44,43,2 vs. 56,82,4 mg/dL, p=0,013), e maior triglicerídeo (180,926,7 vs. 89,76,6mg/dL, p=0,014) e VLDL-c (36,25,3 vs. 17,91,3mg/dL, p=0,014) no início do estudo. Ambos os grupos apresentaram redução ponderal (-3,30,7% grupo sem SM e - 4,20,9% grupo com SM) e da circunferência da cintura (-2,40,5% grupo sem SM e - 5,91,4% grupo com SM) significativas. O grupo sem SM reduziu da MG progressivamente até os 90 dias (37,00,8 para 36,60,5%, p=0,02), e com isso aumentou MM (62,00,5 para 63,40,5%, p=0,01), o grupo com SM também reduziu MG ao longo do estudo (32,62,3 para 29,62,4%, p<0,01) e aumentou MM significativamente (62,21,0 para 64,31,3%). A pressão arterial sistólica reduziu no primeiro mês de tratamento no grupo sem SM (de 120,41,8 para 112,32,1 mmHg, p<0,01). No que diz respeito aos parâmetros metabólicos, o grupo sem SM mostrou redução da insulinemia (32,54,2 para 25,92,4U/mL, p=0,05) e aumento da adiponectinemia (4,70,6 para 5,10,8 ng/mL, p=0,02) aos 30 dias, do colesterol total (180,25,8 para 173,85,4 mg/dL, p=0,04), e da leptina (27,01,9 para 18,21,4 ng/mL, p<0,01) aos 60 dias, porém, houve redução do QUICKI aos 90 dias (0,390,03 para 0,350,01, p=0,01). No grupo com SM, a leptinemia reduziu aos 60 dias (20,31,9 para 14,71,1 ng/mL, p=0,01) e a adiponectinemia aos 90 dias (5,71,2 para 7,11,4 ng/mL, p<0,01), também houve remissão de 57,1% dos casos de SM. Sugerimos que, a dieta hipocalórica foi eficaz na redução do peso corporal e da MG, principalmente a localizada na região abdominal. Conseqüentemente, houve melhora considerável do perfil metabólico relacionado à obesidade no grupo sem SM, e também dos marcadores de sensibilidade à insulina e cardioprotetores relacionados à SM, além da remissão dos casos de SM.

Silica-based 64-channel arrayed waveguide gratings (AWGs) with double functions and 0.4 nm (50 GHz) channel spacing have been designed and fabricated. On the same component, Gauss and flat-top output response spectra are obtained simultaneously. The test results show that when the insertion loss ranges from 3.5 dB to 6 dB,the crosstalk is better than -34 dB, the 1 dB bandwidth is 0.12 nm, the 3 dB bandwidth is 0,218 nm, and the polarization-dependent loss (PDL) is less than 0.5 dB for Gauss response. When the insertion loss ranges,from 5.8 dB to 7.8 dB, the crosstalk is better than -30 dB, the 1 dB bandwidth is 0.24 nm, the 3 dB bandwidth is 0.33 nm, and the PDL is less than 0.2 dB for flat-top response.

A 1.60-mu m laser diode and electroabsorption modulator monolithically integrated with a dual-waveguide spot-size converter output for low-loss coupling to cleaved single-mode optical fiber is demonstrated. The devices emit in a single transverse and quasi-single longitudinal mode with a side mode suppression ratio of 25.6 dB. These devices exhibit a 3-dB modulation bandwidth of 16.0 GHz, and modulator extinction ratios of 16.2 dB dc. The beam divergence angle is about 7.3x10.6 deg, resulting in 3.0-dB coupling loss with cleaved single-mode optical fiber. (c) 2005 Society of Photo-optical Instrumentation Engineers.

A distributed-feedback (DFB) laser and a high-speed electroabsorption (EA) modulator are integrated, on the basis of the selective area MOVPE growth (SAG) technique and the ridge waveguide structure, for a 10 Gbit s(-1) optical transmission system. The integrated DFB laser/EA modulator device is packaged in a compact module with a 20% optical coupling efficiency to the single-mode fibre. The typical threshold current is 15 mA, and the side-mode suppression ratio is over 40 dB with the single-mode operation at 1550 nm. The module exhibits 1.2 mW fibre output power at a laser gain current of 70 mA and a modulator bias voltage of 0 V. The 3 dB bandwidth is 12 GHz. A dynamic extinction ratio of over 10 dB has been successfully achieved under 10 Gbit s(-1) non-return to zero (NRZ) operation, and a clearly open eye diagram is obtained.

A 1.55-mu m ridge distributed feedback laser and electroabsorption modulator monolithically integrated with a buried-ridge-stripe dual-waveguide spot-size converter (SSC) at the output port for low-loss coupling to a cleaved single-mode optical fiber was fabricated by means of selective area growth, quantum-well intermixing, and dual-core technologies. These devices exhibit threshold current of 28 mA, 3-dB modulation bandwidth of 12.0 GHz, modulator extinction ratios of 25.0-dB dc. The output beam divergence angles of the SSC in the horizontal and vertical directions are as small as 8.0 degrees x 12.6 degrees, respectively, resulting in 3.2-dB coupling loss with a cleaved single-mode optical fiber.

A compact eight-channel flat spectral response arrayed waveguide grating (AWG) multiplexer based on siliconon-insulator (SOI) materials has been fabricated on the planar lightwave circuit (PLC). The 1-dB bandwidth of 48 GHz and 3-dB bandwidth of 69 GHz are obtained for the 100 GHz channel spacing. Not only non-adjacent crosstalk but also adjacent crosstalk are less than -25 dB. The on-chip propagation loss range is from 3.5 to 3.9 dB, and the 2 total device size is 1.5 x 1.0 cm(2). (c) 2005 Elsevier B.V. All rights reserved.
