Mangrove forests encompass a group of trees species that inhabit the intertidal zones, where soil is characterized by the high salinity and low availability of oxygen. The phyllosphere of these trees represent the habitat provided on the aboveground parts of plants, supporting in a global scale, a large and complex microbial community. The structure of phyllosphere communities reflects immigration, survival and growth of microbial colonizers, which is influenced by numerous environmental factors in addition to leaf physical and chemical properties. Here, a combination of culture-base methods with PCR-DGGE was applied to test whether local or plant specific factors shape the bacterial community of the phyllosphere from three plant species (Avicenia shaueriana, Laguncularia racemosa and Rhizophora mangle), found in two mangroves. The number of bacteria in the phyllosphere of these plants varied between 3.62 x 10(4) in A. schaeriana and 6.26 x 10³ in R. mangle. The results obtained by PCR-DGGE and isolation approaches were congruent and demonstrated that each plant species harbor specific bacterial communities in their leaves surfaces. Moreover, the ordination of environmental factors (mangrove and plant species), by redundancy analysis (RDA), also indicated that the selection exerted by plant species is higher than mangrove location on bacterial communities at phyllosphere.

The dissertation contains five parts: An introduction, three major chapters, and a short conclusion. The First Chapter starts from a survey and discussion of the studies on corporate law and financial development literature. The commonly used methods in these cross-sectional analyses are biased as legal origins are no longer valid instruments. Hence, the model uncertainty becomes a salient problem. The Bayesian Model Averaging algorithm is applied to test the robustness of empirical results in Djankov et al. (2008). The analysis finds that their constructed legal index is not robustly correlated with most of the various stock market outcome variables. The second Chapter looks into the effects of minority shareholders protection in corporate governance regime on entrepreneurs' ex ante incentives to undertake IPO. Most of the current literature focuses on the beneficial part of minority shareholder protection on valuation, while overlooks its private costs on entrepreneur's control. As a result, the entrepreneur trade-offs the costs of monitoring with the benefits of cheap sources of finance when minority shareholder protection improves. The theoretical predictions are empirically tested using panel data and GMM-sys estimator. The third Chapter investigates the corporate law and corporate governance reform in China. The corporate law in China regards shareholder control as the means to the ends of pursuing the interests of stakeholders, which is inefficient. The Chapter combines the recent development of theories of the firm, i.e., the team production theory and the property rights theory, to solve such problem. The enlightened shareholder value, which emphasizes on the long term valuation of the firm, should be adopted as objectives of listed firms. In addition, a move from the mandatory division of power between shareholder meeting and board meeting to the default regime, is proposed.

Kiwifruit (genus Actinidia) is an important horticultural crop grown in the temperate regions. The four world’s largest producers are China, Italy, New Zealand and Chile. More than 50 species are recognized in the genus but the principal species in cultivation are A. deliciosa and A. chinensis. In Italy, as well as in many other countries, the kiwifruit crop has been considered to be relatively disease free and then no certification system for this species has been developed to regulate importation of propagation plant material in the European Union. During the last years a number of fungal and bacterial diseases have been recorded such as Botrytis cinerea and Pseudomonas syringae pv. actinidiae. Since 2003, several viruses and virus-like diseases have been identified and more recent studies demonstrated that Actinidia spp can be infected by a wide range of viral agents. In collaboration with the University of Auckland we have been detected thirteen different viral species on kiwifruit plants. During the three years of my PhD I worked on the characterization of Cucumber mosaic virus (CMV) and Pelargonium zonate spot virus (PZSV). The determination of causal agents has been based on host range, symptom expression in the test plant species and morphological properties of the virus particles using transmission electron microscopy (TEM) and using specific oligonucleotide primers in reverse transcription-polymerase chain reaction (RT-PCR). Both viruses induced several symptoms on kiwifruit plants. Moreover with new technologies such as high-throughput sequencing we detected additional viruses, a new member of the family Closteroviridae and a new member of the family Totiviridae. Taking together all results of my studies it is clear that, in order to minimize the risk of serious viral disease in kiwifruit, it is vital to use virus-free propagation material in order to prevent the spread of these viruses.

Liver tissue was collected from eight random dairy cows at a slaughterhouse to test if gene expression of pyruvate carboxylase (PC), mitochondrial phosphoenolpyruvate carboxykinase (PEPCKm) and cytosolic phosphoenolpyruvate carboxykinase (PEPCKc) is different at different locations in the liver. Obtained liver samples were analysed for mRNA expression levels of PC, PEPCKc and PEPCKm and subjected to the MIXED procedure of SAS to test for the sampled locations with cow liver as repeated subject. Additionally, the general linear model procedure (GLM) for analysis of variance was applied to test for significant differences for mRNA abundance of PEPCKm, PEPCKc and bPC between the livers. In conclusion, this study demonstrated that mRNA abundance of PC, PEPCKc and PEPCKm is not different between locations in the liver but may differ between individual cows.

The relative abundance of the heavy water isotopologue HDO provides a deeper insight into the atmospheric hydrological cycle. The SCanning Imaging Absorption spectroMeter for Atmospheric CartograpHY (SCIAMACHY) allows for global retrievals of the ratio HDO/H2O in the 2.3 micron wavelength range. However, the spectroscopy of water lines in this region remains a large source of uncertainty for these retrievals. We therefore evaluate and improve the water spectroscopy in the range 4174–4300 cm−1 and test if this reduces systematic uncertainties in the SCIAMACHY retrievals of HDO/H2O. We use a laboratory spectrum of water vapour to fit line intensity, air broadening and wavelength shift parameters. The improved spectroscopy is tested on a series of ground-based high resolution FTS spectra as well as on SCIAMACHY retrievals of H2O and the ratio HDO/H2O. We find that the improved spectroscopy leads to lower residuals in the FTS spectra compared to HITRAN 2008 and Jenouvrier et al. (2007) spectroscopy, and the retrievals become more robust against changes in the retrieval window. For both the FTS and SCIAMACHY measurements, the retrieved total H2O columns decrease by 2–4% and we find a negative shift of the HDO/H2O ratio, which for SCIAMACHY is partly compensated by changes in the retrieval setup and calibration software. The updated SCIAMACHY HDO/H2O product shows somewhat steeper latitudinal and temporal gradients and a steeper Rayleigh distillation curve, strengthening previous conclusions that current isotope-enabled general circulation models underestimate the variability in the near-surface HDO/H2O ratio.

AIMS: To compare morphometric parameters and diagnostic performance of the new Stratus Optical Coherence Tomograph (OCT) Disc mode and the Heidelberg Retina Tomograph (HRT); to evaluate OCT's accuracy in determining optic nerve head (ONH) borders. METHODS: Controls and patients with ocular hypertension, glaucoma-like discs, and glaucoma were imaged with OCT Disc mode, HRT II, and colour disc photography (DISC-PHOT). In a separate session, automatically depicted ONH shape and size in OCT were compared with DISC-PHOT, and disc borders adjusted manually where required. In a masked fashion, all print-outs and photographs were studied and discs classified as normal, borderline, and abnormal. The Cohen kappa method was then applied to test for agreement of classification. Bland-Altman analysis was used for comparison of disc measures. RESULTS: In all, 49 eyes were evaluated. Automated disc margin recognition failed in 53%. Misplaced margin points were more frequently found in myopic eyes, but only 31/187 were located in an area of peripapillary atrophy. Agreement of OCT with photography-based diagnosis was excellent in normally looking ONHs, but moderate in discs with large cups, where HRT performed better. OCT values were consistently larger than HRT values for disc and cup area. Compared with HRT, small rim areas and volumes tended to be minimized by OCT, and larger ones to be magnified. CONCLUSIONS: Stratus OCT Disc protocol performed overall well in differentiating between normal and glaucomatous ONHs. However, failure of disc border recognition was frequently observed, making manual correction necessary. ONH measures cannot be directly compared between HRT and OCT.

BACKGROUND: Psychological factors are important in the etiology and prognosis of coronary heart disease (CHD). Cardiac rehabilitation (CR) aims to reduce psychological distress, besides other somatic risk factors. Studies have shown that CR is effective in reducing psychological distress, but little is known about gender-specific outcome differences. Our objective was to examine whether women and men benefit equally from outpatient CR in terms of reduction in psychological distress and whether women show more impaired psychological health at baseline of CR than do men. METHODS: We enrolled 441 CHD patients (mean age 58+/-11 years, 79.8% men) who underwent a 12-week outpatient CR program. Psychological dimensions, namely, anxiety, depression, vital exhaustion, social inhibition, and negative affect, were assessed at baseline and post-CR. Multivariate analysis of variance (MANOVA), controlling for age, disease severity, and exercise capacity, was applied to test for gender-specific differences at baseline and change between baseline and post-CR. In addition, gender-specific effect sizes were calculated for the change on psychological dimensions. RESULTS: Women and men did not differ on any psychological measure at baseline of CR. The effect sizes show small to moderate treatment effects on the psychological dimensions assessed. Gender had a significant impact on change on the dimensions vital exhaustion (F=5.040(df=1), p<0.05) and social inhibition (F=5.74(df=1), p<0.05). Women showed larger change on social inhibition and smaller change on vital exhaustion than men. CONCLUSIONS: Women and men do not differ in the extent of psychological distress at baseline of CR, which could be explained also by the exclusion of highly distressed women from treatment. CR is less effective among women with regard to vital exhaustion and more effective with regard to social inhibition compared with men in a sample of low distressed patients.

BACKGROUND: Several clinical studies on chronic stroke conducted with end-effector-based robots showed improvement of the motor function in the affected arm. Compared to end-effector-based robots, exoskeleton robots provide improved guidance of the human limb and are better suited to train task-oriented movements with a large range of motions. OBJECTIVE: To test whether intensive arm training with the arm exoskeleton ARMin I is feasible with chronic-stroke patients and whether it improves motor function in the paretic arm. METHODS: Three single cases with chronic hemiparesis resulting from unilateral stroke (at least 14 months after stroke). A-B design with 2 weeks of multiple baseline measurements (A), 8 weeks of training (B) with repetitive measurements and a follow-up measurement 8 weeks after training. The training included shoulder and elbow movements with the robotic rehabilitation device ARMin I. Two subjects had three 1-hour sessions per week and 1 subject received five 1-hour sessions per week. The main outcome measurement was the upper-limb part of the Fugl-Meyer Assessment (FMA). RESULTS: The ARMin training was well tolerated by the patients, and the FMA showed moderate, but significant improvements for all 3 subjects (p < 0.05). Most improvements were maintained 8 weeks after discharge. CONCLUSIONS: This study indicates that intensive training with an arm exoskeleton is feasible with chronic-stroke patients. Moderate improvements were found in all 3 subjects, thus further clinical investigations are justified.

A problem frequently encountered in Data Envelopment Analysis (DEA) is that the total number of inputs and outputs included tend to be too many relative to the sample size. One way to counter this problem is to combine several inputs (or outputs) into (meaningful) aggregate variables reducing thereby the dimension of the input (or output) vector. A direct effect of input aggregation is to reduce the number of constraints. This, in its turn, alters the optimal value of the objective function. In this paper, we show how a statistical test proposed by Banker (1993) may be applied to test the validity of a specific way of aggregating several inputs. An empirical application using data from Indian manufacturing for the year 2002-03 is included as an example of the proposed test.

ABSTRACT This research aims to study of reaction time (RT) in sprinters with and without hearing impairment from the Sports Science perspective. The approach of this study came asking whether there were differences in the visual and auditory RT applied to sprinters with and without hearing impairment, thinking about the future development of inclusive competition between the two groups. Therefore, this study attempts to resolve the difficulties commonly founded by sprinters with hearing impairments during competitions. A priori, sprinters with hearing impairment would compete in a disadvantage situation as a result of the use of a staring signal not suitable for them (from the blocks, they have to look to the judge´s pistol or the movement of an opponent). The document is divided into three parts. In the first part of the review of relevant theoretical framework and justification of the study is presented. The second part focuses on the research objectives, material and method, where results, discussion and conclusions of the study, as well as the limitations of this study and future research are presented. The third part contains references and the fourth, annexes. In the first part, we present the theoretical framework consisting of five chapters, organizing the state of the art of RT, determined by the characteristics of the task and other factors that influence the RT as object of our study. Then we present the main structural and functional aspects of the nervous system associated with visual and auditory RT. After that, sport for people with hearing disabilities is presented, investigating its peculiarities and eligibility criteria is that group within the deaf sport. Finally, we discuss the theoretical foundation of the study of start speed in athletics as a key aspect that will guide our research, especially the determining parameters in placing the starting blocks for athletes with and without hearing impairment, the starting position and the actual placement of stimuli in such a situation. The second part of the research aims to study the values of simple manual visual RT, RT start from blocks and travel times up to 10m and 20m of sprinters with and without hearing impairment, and to analyze possible differences in RT as position and type of light stimulus with respect to both groups of athletes. The third objective of the study is to assess the pertinence of the lighting device developed and used in the study, in a qualitatively way by athletes themselves. Data collection for this study was carried out between February and May 2014, in the Athletics module at the High Performance Centre Joaquin Blume (Madrid) with the two study groups: 9 sprinters with hearing impairments(VDA, reaching 60% of the population in Spain, according to the number of licenses for athletics at FEDS: sprint, 100 and 200 m.l., at the time of the study), and another 13 sprinters without disability (VsDA) who voluntarily presented themselves, with same inclusion criteria for both groups. For measuring and data collection materials such as recording sheet, gauge reaction time (MTR), starting blocks, ReacTime®, luminous device connected to the starting blocks, photocells, computer and software ReacTime, and video camera were used. The methodology used in this study was correlational, analyzing the results of simple manual RT according sensory pathway (visual and auditory) between the two groups (VsDA and VDA). Also auditory and visual RT was studied depending the placement of the start light signal (on the ground and 5 meters, visual pathway) and athletic start gun signal (auditory pathway, conventional situation) and travel time up to 10m (t10m) and 20m (t20m) for both groups of sprinters. Finally, we developed and carried out an evaluation questionnaire for VDA athletes in order to determine the degree of satisfaction after completing the series of experiments with lighting device and adapted to start systems in athletic speed. In order to test the feasibility of the methodology described and tested in the context of real analysis of the experimental protocol, a pilot study in order to know the possible differences visual RT from the starting blocks in sprinters with hearing impairments was performed, to said output using a visual stimulus coordinated by a lighting device with sound output signal (Soto-Rey Perez-Tejero, Rojo-González y Álvarez-Ortiz, 2015). For the statistical procedures, in order to analyze the distribution of the data and their normality, Kolmogorov-Smirnov test was applied, this test yielded normal results for all variables analyzed during EA, EVsuelo and EV5m experimental situations. Parametric statistics were used in this research. As descriptive measures, the maximum, minimum, mean and standard deviation were calculated. In relation to experimental situations, to study possible differences in the variables studied in each group sprinters (intragroup) in the experimental situation 1 (MTR), a Student t test was used for independent samples. Under the experimental situations 2, 3 and 4, to know the differences between the two groups of sprinters in every situation, the T test for independent samples was used, while a simple ANOVA (with post hoc Bonferroni) was used to analyze differences for each group (VDA and VsDA) by experimental situation. Likewise, a repeated measures ANOVA, where the type of stimulus (experimental situation) was variable intra-group and participants sprinters group (VDA and VsDA) the variable between-group, was performed to assess each situation for RT, t10m and t20m, and also interactions between variables. For the statistical treatment SPSS 18.0 (Chicago, IL, USA) was used. Significance levels were set for  ≤0.05, indicating the value of p in each case. One of the most important aspects of this work is the measurement of RT in sprinters with and without hearing impairment in different situations, with different instrumentation and different experimental situations. This involved the development of a research design that responded to the needs raised by the study aims and the development of specific instrumentation (Rojo-Lacal, Soto-Rey Perez-Tejero and Rojo-Gonzalez, 2014; Soto-Rey et al., 2015) and different experimental situations to reproduce the conditions of practical and real competition VsDA and VDA in athletic sprints, and more specifically, at the start. Statistical analysis showed significant differences between the visual and sound stimuli measured by the MTR, with lower RT to the visual stimulus that for sound, both for athletes with hearing disabilities and for those without (visual RT, 0.195 s ± 0.018 s vs 0.197 ± 0.022, p≤0.05; sound RT 0.230 s ± 0.016 vs 0.237 s ± 0.045, p≤0.05). Considering the results according to study population and experimental situation, significant differences between the two populations, VDA and VsDA were found, being faster the VDA than VsDA in the experimental situation with the visual stimulus on the floor (EVsuelo, recorded 0.191 s ± 0.025 vs 0.210 s ± 0.025, p≤0.05, respectively) and VsDA in the experimental situation with the auditory stimulus (EA, 0.396 s ± 0.045 vs 0.174 s ± 0.021, p≤0.05), but no difference between groups in the experimental situation with the 5m visual stimulus to the starting blocks. It is noteworthy that no significant differences in EA and EVsuelo between VsDA to VDA, respectively, for RT. Simple ANOVA showed significant differences in all experimental situations within each group and for all variables, so statistically, the experimental situations were different. Regarding the repeated measures ANOVA, the sphericity test showed adequate, and there were significant differences in the variances of the pairs of means: the value of F indicated that there were differences between the different experimental situations regarding RT, even when they were related to the disability factor (factor interaction, p≤0.05). Therefore, it is clear that the situations were different from each other, also taking into account impairment. The η2 (eta squared, effect size, for interaction) indicates that 91.7% of the variation is due to the conditions of the study, not by error (as indicator of the generalization potential of the study results). On the other hand, evaluation of the light signal was positively related to lighting, ease of use, location, color, size, alignment device and equipment necessary to adapt the start system. All the athletes claim strongly in favor of the lighting device adaptation system to enable athletic competition inclusive. Also they concluded that light device would enhance performance or would decrease their RT during the competition. The discussion of this study justify the type of stimulus and the start light positioning as key to the RT performance, so that we could argue the need for lighting devices for VDA when competing against VsDA the same competition, inclusive. This research has demonstrated, applying the scientific method, that the use of these devices, techniques and given experimental conditions, allows the use of the VDA, using his best visual RT, shown similar (ns) auditory RT of VsDA, indicating that for inclusive competitions, the start signal using the light (for VDA) and the usual start (sound stimulus) to VsDA can be an equitable solution based on the evidence shown in this study. Thus, and as a reference, indicate that the average of the RT sprinters in the 100 m. final at the 2012 Summer Olympic Games was 0.162 s ± 0.015. Thus, we believe that these parameters become a reference to sports coaches, athletes and future research. Applications of this work will allow modifications and reflections in the form of support for training and competition for the coach, or judge, as we believe is necessary to provide adequate attention to VDA in speed starts, especially in inclusive practice situations.

In behavior reminiscent of the responsiveness of human infants to speech, young songbirds innately recognize and prefer to learn the songs of their own species. The acoustic and physiological bases for innate recognition were investigated in fledgling white-crowned sparrows lacking song experience. A behavioral test revealed that the complete conspecific song was not essential for innate recognition: songs composed of single white-crowned sparrow phrases and songs played in reverse elicited vocal responses as strongly as did normal song. In all cases, these responses surpassed those to other species’ songs. Although auditory neurons in the song nucleus HVc and the underlying neostriatum of fledglings did not prefer conspecific song over foreign song, some neurons responded strongly to particular phrase types characteristic of white-crowned sparrows and, thus, could contribute to innate song recognition.

Study Design. Cross-sectional study. Objective. The present study compared activity of deep and superficial cervical flexor muscles and craniocervical flexion range of motion during a test of craniocervical flexion between 10 patients with chronic neck pain and 10 controls. Summary of Background Data. Individuals with chronic neck pain exhibit reduced performance on a test of craniocervical flexion, and training of this maneuver is effective in management of neck complaints. Although this test is hypothesized to reflect dysfunction of the deep cervical flexor muscles, this has not been tested. Methods. Deep cervical flexor electromyographic activity was recorded with custom electrodes inserted via the nose and fixed by suction to the posterior mucosa of the oropharynx. Surface electrodes were placed over the superficial neck muscles ( sternocleidomastoid and anterior scalene). Root mean square electromyographic amplitude and craniocervical flexion range of motion was measured during five incremental levels of craniocervical flexion in supine. Results. There was a strong linear relation between the electromyographic amplitude of the deep cervical flexor muscles and the incremental stages of the craniocervical flexion test for control and individuals with neck pain ( P = 0.002). However, the amplitude of deep cervical flexor electromyographic activity was less for the group with neck pain than controls, and this difference was significant for the higher increments of the task ( P < 0.05). Although not significant, there was a strong trend for greater sternocleidomastoid and anterior scalene electromyographic activity for the group with neck pain. Conclusions. These data confirm that reduced performance of the craniocervical flexion test is associated with dysfunction of the deep cervical flexor muscles and support the validity of this test for patients with neck pain.
