Recently, the deterministic tourist walk has emerged as a novel approach for texture analysis. This method employs a traveler visiting image pixels using a deterministic walk rule. Resulting trajectories provide clues about pixel interaction in the image that can be used for image classification and identification tasks. This paper proposes a new walk rule for the tourist which is based on contrast direction of a neighborhood. The yielded results using this approach are comparable with those from traditional texture analysis methods in the classification of a set of Brodatz textures and their rotated versions, thus confirming the potential of the method as a feasible texture analysis methodology. This paper describes an approach for electronic feature extraction from fingerprint images for identification purposes. Statistical analysis of the features extracted from the fingerprint provides the advantage of real-time analysis of the fingerprint information, providing a method to remove unwanted information prior to the matching stage required in electronic fingerprint verification. This method can also detect of noise within the fingerprint image and location of critical data in the fingerprint. In order to demonstrate the effectiveness of this work, experiments have been developed and conducted with the results and analysis provided at the end of this paper for discussion.

A new objective fabric pilling grading method based on wavelet texture analysis was developed. The new method created a complex texture feature vector based on the wavelet detail coefficients from all decomposition levels and horizontal, vertical and diagonal orientations, permitting a much richer and more complete representation of pilling texture in the image to be used as a basis for classification. Standard multi-factor classification techniques of principal components analysis and discriminant analysis were then used to classify the pilling samples into five pilling degrees. The preliminary investigation of the method was performed using standard pilling image sets of knitted, woven and non-woven fabrics. The results showed that this method could successfully evaluate the pilling intensity of knitted, woven and non-woven fabrics by selecting the suitable wavelet and associated analysis scale.

There exists an enormous gap between low-level visual feature and high-level semantic information, and the accuracy of content-based image classification and retrieval depends greatly on the description of low-level visual features. Taking this into consideration, a novel texture and edge descriptor is proposed in this paper, which can be represented with a histogram. Furthermore, with the incorporation of the color, texture and edge histograms searnlessly, the images are grouped into semantic classes using a support vector machine (SVM). Experiment results show that the combination descriptor is more discriminative than other feature descriptors such as Gabor texture.

Image fusion quality metrics have evolved from image processing quality metrics. They measure the quality of fused images by estimating how much localized information has been transferred from the source images into the fused image. However, this technique assumes that it is actually possible to fuse two images into one without any loss. In practice, some features must be sacrificed and relaxed in both source images. Relaxed features might be very important, like edges, gradients and texture elements. The importance of a certain feature is application dependant. This paper presents a new method for image fusion quality assessment. It depends on estimating how much valuable information has not been transferred.

We discuss the problem of texture recognition based on the grey level co-occurrence matrix (GLCM). We performed a number of numerical experiments to establish whether the accuracy of classification is optimal when GLCM entries are aggregated into standard metrics like contrast, dissimilarity, homogeneity, entropy, etc., and compared these metrics to several alternative aggregation methods.We conclude that k nearest neighbors classification based on raw GLCM entries typically works better than classification based on the standard metrics for noiseless data, that metrics based on principal component analysis inprove classification, and that a simple change from the arithmetic to quadratic mean in calculating the standard metrics also improves classification.

Fabric pilling is a serious problem for the apparel industry. Resistance to pilling is normally tested by simulated accelerated wear and manual assessment of degree of pilling based on a visual comparison of the sample to a set of test images. A number of automated systems based on image analysis have been developed. The authors propose new methods of image analysis based on the two-dimensional wavelet transform to objectively measure the pilling intensity in sample images. Initial work employed the detail coefficients of the two-dimensional discrete wavelet transform (2DDWT) as a measure of the pilling intensity of woven/knitted fabrics.

This method is shown to be robust to image translation and brightness variation. Using the approximation coefficients of the 2DDWT, the method is extended to non-woven pilling image sets. Wavelet texture analysis (WTA) combined with principal components analysis are shown to produce a richer texture description of pilling for analysis and classification. Finally, employing the two-dimensional dual-tree complex wavelet transform as the basis for the WTA feature vector is shown to produce good automated classification on a range of standard pilling image sets.

This paper presents the use of the wavelet transform to extract fiber surface texture features for classifying cashmere and superfine merino wool fibers. Extracting features from brightness variations caused by the cuticular scale height, shape and interval provides an effective way for characterizing different animal fibers and subsequently classifying them. This may enable the development of a completely automated and objective system for animal fiber identification.

Existing texture synthesis-from-example strategies for polygon meshes typically make use of three components: a multi-resolution mesh hierarchy that allows the overall nature of the pattern to be reproduced before filling in detail; a matching strategy that extends the synthesized texture using the best fit from a texture sample; and a transfer mechanism that copies the selected portion of the texture sample to the target surface. We introduce novel alternatives for each of these components. Use of p2-subdivision surfaces provides the mesh hierarchy and allows fine control over the surface complexity. Adaptive subdivision is used to create an even vertex distribution over the surface. Use of the graph defined by a surface region for matching, rather than a regular texture neighbourhood, provides for flexible control over the scale of the texture and allows simultaneous matching against multiple levels of an image pyramid created from the texture sample. We use graph cuts for texture transfer, adapting this scheme to the context of surface synthesis. The resulting surface textures are realistic, tolerant of local mesh detail and are comparable to results produced by texture neighbourhood sampling approaches.

Tonewood for musical instruments is quarter-sawn and frequently quality-graded based on visual appearance, mechanical and acoustic properties. The assessment uses simple human (subjective) observation, and two ‘‘experts’’ can rate the same sample differently. This paper describes the application of integral transforms (Fourier and Radon) for automatic (objective) assessment of the visual appearance of 10 Sitka spruce (Picea sitchensis) sample images. This work considers surface classification on the basis of grain orientation, count, spacing, and evenness or uniformity.

Textural image classification technologies have been extensively explored and widely applied in many areas. It is advantageous to combine both the occurrence and spatial distribution of local patterns to describe a texture. However, most existing state-of-the-art approaches for textural image classification only employ the occurrence histogram of local patterns to describe textures, without considering their co-occurrence information. And they are usually very time-consuming because of the vector quantization involved. Moreover, those feature extraction paradigms are implemented at a single scale. In this paper we propose a novel multi-scale local pattern co-occurrence matrix (MS_LPCM) descriptor to characterize textural images through four major steps. Firstly, Gaussian filtering pyramid preprocessing is employed to obtain multi-scale images; secondly, a local binary pattern (LBP) operator is applied on each textural image to create a LBP image; thirdly, the gray-level co-occurrence matrix (GLCM) is utilized to extract local pattern co-occurrence matrix (LPCM) from LBP images as the features; finally, all LPCM features from the same textural image at different scales are concatenated as the final feature vectors for classification. The experimental results on three benchmark databases in this study have shown a higher classification accuracy and lower computing cost as compared with other state-of-the-art algorithms.

Satellite image processing is a complex task that has received considerable attention from many researchers. In this paper, an interactive image query system for satellite imagery searching and retrieval is proposed. Like most image retrieval systems, extraction of image features is the most important step that has a great impact on the retrieval performance. Thus, a new technique that fuses color and texture features for segmentation is introduced. Applicability of the proposed technique is assessed using a database containing multispectral satellite imagery. The experiments demonstrate that the proposed segmentation technique is able to improve quality of the segmentation results as well as the retrieval performance.

Texture classification is one of the most important tasks in computer vision field and it has been extensively investigated in the last several decades. Previous texture classification methods mainly used the template matching based methods such as Support Vector Machine and k-Nearest-Neighbour for classification. Given enough training images the state-of-the-art texture classification methods could achieve very high classification accuracies on some benchmark databases. However, when the number of training images is limited, which usually happens in real-world applications because of the high cost of obtaining labelled data, the classification accuracies of those state-of-the-art methods would deteriorate due to the overfitting effect. In this paper we aim to develop a novel framework that could correctly classify textural images with only a small number of training images. By taking into account the repetition and sparsity property of textures we propose a sparse representation based multi-manifold analysis framework for texture classification from few training images. A set of new training samples are generated from each training image by a scale and spatial pyramid, and then the training samples belonging to each class are modelled by a manifold based on sparse representation. We learn a dictionary of sparse representation and a projection matrix for each class and classify the test images based on the projected reconstruction errors. The framework provides a more compact model than the template matching based texture classification methods, and mitigates the overfitting effect. Experimental results show that the proposed method could achieve reasonably high generalization capability even with as few as 3 training images, and significantly outperforms the state-of-the-art texture classification approaches on three benchmark datasets. © 2014 Elsevier B.V. This paper considers the role of automatic estimation of crowd density and its importance for the automatic monitoring of areas where crowds are expected to be present. A new technique is proposed which is able to estimate densities ranging from very low to very high concentration of people, which is a difficult problem because in a crowd only parts of people's body appear. The new technique is based on the differences of texture patterns of the images of crowds. Images of low density crowds tend to present coarse textures, while images of dense crowds tend to present fine textures. The image pixels are classified in different texture classes and statistics of such classes are used to estimate the number of people. The texture classification and the estimation of people density are carried out by means of self organising neural networks. Results obtained respectively to the estimation of the number of people in a specific area of Liverpool Street Railway Station in London (UK) are presented. (C) 1998 Elsevier B.V. Ltd. The goal of this work is to assess the efficacy of texture measures for estimating levels of crowd densities ill images. This estimation is crucial for the problem of crowd monitoring. and control. The assessment is carried out oil a set of nearly 300 real images captured from Liverpool Street Train Station. London, UK using texture measures extracted from the images through the following four different methods: gray level dependence matrices, straight lille segments. Fourier analysis. and fractal dimensions. The estimations of dowel densities are given in terms of the classification of the input images ill five classes of densities (very low, low. moderate. high and very high). Three types of classifiers are used: neural (implemented according to the Kohonen model). Bayesian. and an approach based on fitting functions. The results obtained by these three classifiers. using the four texture measures. allowed the conclusion that, for the problem of crowd density estimation. texture analysis is very effective.
