A 16mm moving image work and expanded cinema performance co-commissioned by Tate Modern and Arnolfini. Shot at the post-production facilities of Pinewood studios, London, the close-up sequences feature abstract patterns of optical sound encoded as light, printed onto the soundtrack area of the filmstrip. The film features the quivering light of a 16mm mono and a 35mm stereo optical sound camera, providing a seismic glimpse at a sound-wave in formation, on occasions flashing like a stroboscopic Rorschach inkblot. A moving image work co-commissioned by the Science Museum (London), with extensive unprecedented access to the Oramics archive at Goldsmiths College and the Science Museum. Conceived of as an Artist's film in homage to Daphne Oram, the pioneer of British Electronic Music and co-founder of the BBC Radiophonic workshop in 1958, the film features a close-up encounter with her unique invention, the Oramics Machine, housed at the Science Museum in London. Oram used drawn sound principles to compose ‘handwrought' electronic music, and yet the visual nature of her work remains largely unseen and unsung. A moving image work based on research with neurologists and audiologists, collectors and archivists. The film gives voice to the idea that every surface, in particular parts of our anatomy, is potentially inscribed with an unheard sound or echoes of voices from the past. The soundtrack’s musical composition is interlaced with a voice-over which draws on Rainer Maria Rilke’s text 'Primal Sound', where he reflects on the possibility of playing the coronal suture of a skull with a phonograph needle. The film uses microscopic photography, scanning electron microscopy, and sounds of otoacoustic emissions to uncover haunting aural bonescapes. The voiceovers too are recorded using old sound technology as a filter - writing and over-writing of wax cylinder to create unexpected scratches, glitches, loops and echoes. Teacher commitment has been found to be a critical predictor of teachers’ work performance, absenteeism, retention, burnout and turnover, as well as having an important influence on students’ motivation, achievement, attitudes towards learning and being at school (Firestone (1996). Educational Administration Quarterly, 32(2), 209–235; Graham (1996). Journal of Physical Education, Recreation and Dance, 67(1), 45–47; Louis (1998). It is also a necessary ingredient to the successful implementation, adaptation or resistance reform agendas. Surprisingly, however, the relationship between teachers’ motivation, efficacy, job satisfaction and commitment, and between commitment and the quality of their work has not been the subject of extensive research. Some literature presents commitment as a feature of being and behaving as a professional (Helsby, Knight, McCulloch, Saunders, & Warburton (1997). A report to participants on the professional cultures of Teachers Research Project, Lancaster University, January). Others suggest that it fluctuates according to personal, institutional and policy contexts (Louis (1998). School Effectiveness and School Improvement, 9(1), 1–27) and identify different dimensions of commitment which interact and fluctuate (Tyree (1996). Journal of Educational Research, 89(5), 295–304). Others claim that teachers’ commitment tends to decrease progressively over the course of the teaching career (Fraser, Draper, & Taylor (1998). Evaluation and Research in Education, 12 (2), 61–71; Huberman (1993). The lives of teachers. London: Cassell). In this research, experienced teachers in England and Australia were interviewed about their understandings of commitment. The data suggest that commitment may be better understood as a nested phenomena at the centre of which is a set of core, relatively permanent values based upon personal beliefs, images of self, role and identity which are subject to challenge by change which is socio-politically constructed.

Interactive gallery installation which playfully re-contextualised online news feeds from CNN’s website with a soundtrack of found music in order to comment on an online environment where 'serious' news and trivial 'infotainment' often occupy the same space. ‘CNN Interactive just got more interactive’ aimed to investigate the balance between information and ‘info-tainment’ on the web. It demonstrated how the authority and presence of global news corporations online could be playfully subverted by enabling the audience to add a variety of emotively titled soundtracks to the monolithic CNN Interactive website. The project also explored how a work could exist dually as website and gallery installation. ‘CNN interactive’ contributes to the taxonomy of new media art as a new form of contemporary art. One of the first examples in the world of a gallery installation using live Internet data, it is also one of the first attempts in a new media art context to address how individuals respond to and comprehend the changed nature of the news as an immediate phenomenon as relayed by network communications systems. 'CNN interactive’ continues Craighead and Thomson’s research into how live digital networked information can be re-purposed as artistic material within gallery installation contexts but with specific reference to online-international news events, rather than arbitrary data sources (see e-poltergeist, output 1). ‘CNN Interactive’ was commissioned by Tate Britain for the exhibition ‘Art and Money Online’. This was the first gallery exhibition in Tate Britain featuring work that utilised and explored new media as an artistic area, and the first work commissioned by the Tate to operate simultaneously as an online gallery artwork. Selected reviews and citations include ‘Digital Art’ by Christiane Paul, 2003; ‘Internet Art: The Online Clash of Culture and Commerce’ by Julian Stallabrass. Artwork using Internet search engine technology to make people’s online desires, interests and orientations visible, presenting random search term enquiries in a variety of forms including a railway information sign, an art gallery installation and an online website. activity, curiosity and desire. The project sampled and analysed how ‘search terms’ were used by the public as live data. It then re-presented them on a website, in a gallery and latterly on a bespoke mechanical railway flap-sign, thus creating a snapshot of online enquiry at any give time. Beacon’s originality lies in the manner in which it has taken abstract digital data and found different expressions for it. Thus the work extends debates in media arts that focus on purely virtual and online expressions of data, by developing online information into new non-digital material forms and contexts such as railway signs. This research has been developed over a three year period. Initially with software only and then on receipt of AHRC small grant (£5000) with the lauded Italian manufacturer Solari of Udine, Italy and BFI Southbank. It represents the culmination of a body of research that asks whether live data can be used as material to make artworks. Beacon was specially developed for the Tate Britain programme 40 artists 40 days, produced in conjunction with the UK Olympic Games bid and intended to “create a unique countdown calendar that will focus attention on Britain’s exceptional creative talent”. The project is exhibited by the Tate website ‘Tate Online’ presently in perpetuity. The gallery version of this work is currently held in five private collections in the USA and is shown regularly in galleries around the world. The railway flap-sign is owned by BFI Southbank and will eventually be sited there permanently. All work is developed jointly and equally between Craighead and her collaborator, Jon Thomson, (Slade).

Educational leadership is challenging, complex, and vitally important to student success. Despite the publication of theories, books, and research on school leadership, a perception of a chasm between theory and practice exists. However, the intentional consideration and implementation of theory can make an enormous impact on practice. This is revealed in this dissertation through the exploration of invitational leadership theory through an autoethnographic study of my leadership journey, as well as the intentionally inviting leadership of Billy Tate, a veteran school principal in Belfast, Northern Ireland. This dissertation uses an amalgamated methodology of interview and observational research embedded within an autoethnography to intimately explore invitational theory in practice through the lens of a new school principal in Southern Ontario and a veteran principal in Belfast. This study provides an intimate understanding of the impact and applicability of invitational educational leadership theory in two unique educational, political, and social contexts and draws conclusions from the consideration of and reflection upon my leadership and Billy Tate’s. This dissertation reveals invitational leadership as a theory of practice that has significantly influenced two very different school leaders and posits that invitational theory is a theory of practice worthy of consideration by educational leaders from around the world.

La présente étude propose une analyse historique de la légende urbaine des snuff movies. En premier lieu, elle se penche sur l’émergence de cette rumeur dans le paysage médiatique américain des années 70 tout en focalisant sur certains objets filmiques l’ayant crédibilisée, principalement les stag et les mondo movies. Ce mémoire analyse par la suite l’influence majeure de deux événements sur l’implantation de la légende urbaine dans l’imaginaire collectif, soit l’assassinat de Sharon Tate et la circulation du film de Zapruder. Après avoir étudié la persistance de la rumeur, cet essai focalise sur la promotion et l’exploitation de Snuff (1976) en plus de proposer une analyse de ce long métrage. Ensuite, il se penche sur deux types de représentations du snuff dans le cinéma de fiction ainsi que leurs impacts sur l’authentification de la légende urbaine. Il est d’abord question des mises en scène du snuff dans le cinéma populaire qui s’inspirent de la rumeur pour ensuite l’actualiser. Sont ensuite étudiées les représentations du snuff à titre de faux documents, soit ces œuvres qui tentent par divers procédés de se faire passer pour de véritables films clandestins et, de ce fait, authentifient l’objet auquel ils se réfèrent. Puisque cette étude analyse l’évolution médiatique de la légende urbaine, elle se conclut sur son déplacement du cinéma vers Internet et de sa nouvelle crédibilisation grâce aux vidéos macabres, à la pornographie juvénile et au récent cas Magnotta.

Curing is the oldest and cheapest method of preservation of fish allover the world. Fish curing industry has not shown much improverrent from its primitive nature because this industry is mainly handled by illiterate and less educated fishermen/fisherwomen. They do not know much about,the importance of scientific methods of fish curing. The cured fish produced by them is unhygienic and poor in quality. Because of the negligenence and ignorance of the fish curers, a considerable quanti ty of this protein rich food is spoiled and lost every year. Research has been conducted extensively in the Cen tral and State sectors and various remedial measures have been suggested :to improve the fish curing industry in India. Inspi te of the preJudioa against cured fish because of their existing low quality, research work in recent years have indicated that their quality can be greaUy improved and shelf-life prolonged if the me thods are standardised. To achieve this aim, Cen tral and s tate Departments have already made considerable efforts to transfer the improved methods ~ the fish curing industry by way of traininq courses, demonstrations, Lab, to Land Prograrrmesi film shows, exhibitions, personal discussion etc. As the result of this, fish curers have started adopting the improved practices in fish curing. Still there seems to be a considerable qap between the techmology available and the technology adopted in this field. A comprehensive study on the extent of adoption of improved practices in fish curing and the factors involved in low or non-adoption of certain aspects is lackin~ at present. This gap has to be filled up. The possihle methods for the effective transfer of technology for the production and distribution of high quali ty cured fish products and improvement of soclo-economic condition of fishermen engaqed in fish curing have to be identified.

Sei $N/K$ eine galoissche Zahlkörpererweiterung mit Galoisgruppe $G$, so dass es in $N$ eine Stelle mit voller Zerlegungsgruppe gibt. Die vorliegende Arbeit beschäftigt sich mit Algorithmen, die für das gegebene Fallbeispiel $N/K$, die äquivariante Tamagawazahlvermutung von Burns und Flach für das Paar $(h^0(Spec(N), \mathbb{Z}[G]))$ (numerisch) verifizieren. Grob gesprochen stellt die äquivariante Tamagawazahlvermutung (im Folgenden ETNC) in diesem Spezialfall einen Zusammenhang her zwischen Werten von Artinschen $L$-Reihen zu den absolut irreduziblen Charakteren von $G$ und einer Eulercharakteristik, die man in diesem Fall mit Hilfe einer sogenannten Tatesequenz konstruieren kann. Unter den Voraussetzungen 1. es gibt eine Stelle $v$ von $N$ mit voller Zerlegungsgruppe, 2. jeder irreduzible Charakter $\chi$ von $G$ erfüllt eine der folgenden Bedingungen 2a) $\chi$ ist abelsch, 2b) $\chi(G) \subset \mathbb{Q}$ und $\chi$ ist eine ganzzahlige Linearkombination von induzierten trivialen Charakteren; wird ein Algorithmus entwickelt, der ETNC für jedes Fallbeispiel $N/\mathbb{Q}$ vollständig beweist. Voraussetzung 1. erlaubt es eine Idee von Chinburg ([Chi89]) umzusetzen zur algorithmischen Berechnung von Tatesequenzen. Dabei war es u.a. auch notwendig lokale Fundamentalklassen zu berechnen. Im höchsten zahm verzweigten Fall haben wir hierfür einen Algorithmus entwickelt, der ebenfalls auf den Ideen von Chinburg ([Chi85]) beruht, die auf Arbeiten von Serre [Ser] zurück gehen. Für nicht zahm verzweigte Erweiterungen benutzen wir den von Debeerst ([Deb11]) entwickelten Algorithmus, der ebenfalls auf Serre's Arbeiten beruht. Voraussetzung 2. wird benötigt, um Quotienten aus den $L$-Werten und Regulatoren exakt zu berechnen. Dies gelingt, da wir im Fall von abelschen Charakteren auf die Theorie der zyklotomischen Einheiten zurückgreifen können und im Fall (b) auf die analytische Klassenzahlformel von Zwischenkörpern. Ohne die Voraussetzung 2. liefern die Algorithmen für jedes Fallbeispiel $N/K$ immer noch eine numerische Verifikation bis auf Rechengenauigkeit. Den Algorithmus zur numerischen Verifikation haben wir für $A_4$-Erweiterungen über $\mathbb{Q}$ in das Computeralgebrasystem MAGMA implementiert und für 27 Erweiterungen die äquivariante Tamagawazahlvermutung numerisch verifiziert.

In dieser Arbeit werden Algorithmen zur Untersuchung der äquivarianten Tamagawazahlvermutung von Burns und Flach entwickelt. Zunächst werden Algorithmen angegeben mit denen die lokale Fundamentalklasse, die globale Fundamentalklasse und Tates kanonische Klasse berechnet werden können. Dies ermöglicht unter anderem Berechnungen in Brauergruppen von Zahlkörpererweiterungen. Anschließend werden diese Algorithmen auf die Tamagawazahlvermutung angewendet. Die Epsilonkonstantenvermutung kann dadurch für alle Galoiserweiterungen L|K bewiesen werden, bei denen L in einer Galoiserweiterung E|Q vom Grad kleiner gleich 15 eingebettet werden kann. Für die Tamagawazahlvermutung an der Stelle 1 wird ein Algorithmus angegeben, der die Vermutung für ein gegebenes Fallbeispiel L|Q numerischen verifizieren kann. Im Spezialfall, dass alle Charaktere rational oder abelsch sind, kann dieser Algorithmus die Vermutung für L|Q sogar beweisen.

Actualmente, la investigación científica acerca de la influencia de los factores educativos y familiares en el aprendizaje de una segunda lengua (L2) es limitada. En comparación, los efectos que tiene la L2 en la inteligencia y cognición han sido más estudiados. Por esta razón, el artículo presenta una revisión de la literatura empírica existente que relaciona lo mencionado anteriormente, ampliando así la temática del bilingüismo. Se buscaron artículos en cuatro bases de datos (PSICODOC, ISI Web of knowledge y SCOPUS), usando palabras claves específicas, en el periodo de 1990 hasta el 2012. De 79 artículos encontrados, 34 cumplieron con los criterios de inclusión para la revisión. Asimismo, se tuvieron en cuenta dos libros, de los cuales se revisó un capítulo por cada uno según los mismos criterios. En conjunto, los resultados arrojaron importantes datos teóricos y de investigación que relacionan el éxito en el aprendizaje de una L2 con la inteligencia y cognición, según la influencia de los factores educativos y familiares. En conclusión, se identificaron más factores educativos que familiares; lo cual a concepto de la autora evidencia la limitada investigación que se ha hecho sobre los factores familiares en el bilingüismo actualmente.

Durante los siglos XVII y XVIII se presentaron varias querellas ante el Tribunal de Justicia Criminal del Nuevo Reino de Granada, en las que se denunciaba que había personas que ejercían los oficios médicos sin tener títulos que los acreditaran como facultativos en las artes curativas. Por ese entonces, se creía que quienes utilizaban yerbas y conjuros como métodos terapéuticos, por lo general mujeres, debían ser juzgadas como yerbateras-envenenadoras, porque no pretendían curar sino matar a quien consumiera sus preparados. El texto establece que los procesos criminales por envenenamiento constituyen un prisma en el que convergen diferentes problemáticas del periodo colonial neogranadino, relacionadas con la salud, los oficios médicos, las enfermedades, las creencias mágico-religiosas, el ideal de mujer en la época, la delincuencia, y las dinámicas de las instituciones españolas, entre otras. De esta manera, se estudió cómo fue la relación entre los aspectos jurídicos, las leyes criminales (dictadas por la Corona) y las conductas “desviadas” (relacionadas con el crimen por envenenamiento) de los habitantes del Nuevo Reino de Granada, entre los siglos XVII y XVIII. Para ello se revistaron desde diferentes perspectivas, varios temas del mundo colonial neogranadino, relacionados con los rumores, la comidilla, los chismes y la importancia de la comunicación hablada en el virreinato; el problema de la honra, como una de las virtudes más sobresalientes de la época y las creencias de la cultura popular con relación al envenenamiento y los diferentes métodos curativos.
