Based on the Comprehensive School Health framework, Ontario's Foundations for a Healthy School (2009) outlines an integrated approach to school health promotion. In this approach the school, community and partners (including public health) are fully engaged With a common goal of youth health. With the recent introductions of the Ontario Public Health Standards (2009) and the revised elementary health and physical education curriculum (2010), the timing for a greater integration of public health with schools is ideal. A needs assessment was conducted to identify the perceived support required by public health professionals to implement the mandates of both policy documents in Ontario. Data was collected for the needs assessment through facilitated discussions at a provincial roundtable event, regional focus groups and individual interviews with public health professionals representing Ontario's 36 public health units. Findings suggest that public health professionals perceive that they require increased resources, greater communication, a clear vision of public health and a suitable understanding of the professional cultures in which they are surrounded in order to effectively support schools. This study expands upon these four categories and the corresponding seventeen themes that were uncovered during the research process.

This is a narrative design study focusing on the understandings that a group of 6 Southern Ontario teachers have of cultural diversity and how these understandings integrated into their development of teacher identity. Given the high culturally diverse population of Canada and its national multicultural values, conducting this study on Canadian pre-service and in-service teachers offers an interesting contribution to the field. In efforts to explore the participants’ understandings, the research examined a teaching abroad experience. The aim was to investigate how these participants gained insight from their experiences with cultural diversity and whether these insights stimulated a greater culturally conscious teacher identity. Narratives provided a description of the lived experiences of these 6 teachers and identified meanings made from these experiences. Participants included 2 pre-service teachers who were in a teacher education program at the time of the interview, and 4 certified teachers who graduated from a teacher education program within the past 5 years. One on one interviews focused on lived experiences within a participant’s home, school community, and teaching abroad. The researcher used grounded theory during the data analysis to assist in identifying themes, and then compared these themes among participants. Overall, this study suggests that even though these participants live in a multicultural nation, experiences varied greatly based on contributing factors such as heritage and exposure to cultural diversity through their home and school life. Despite their varying level of cultural competence, all participants gained insight from their teaching abroad experience, contributing to a teacher identity that considered inclusive practices. This study suggests that there are some important factors to consider when preparing teachers to teach in a multicultural society.

Parent–school relationships contribute significantly to the quality of students’ education. The Internet, in turn, has started to influence individuals’ way social communication and most school boards in Ontario now use the Internet to communicate with parents, which helps build parent–school relationships. This project comprised a conceptual analysis of how the Internet enhances parent–school relationships to support Ontario school board administrators seeking to implement such technology. The study’s literature review identified the links between Web 2.0 technology, parent–school relationships, and effective parent engagement. A conceptual framework of the features of Web 2.0 tools that promote social interaction was developed and used to analyze websites of three Ontario school boards. The analysis revealed that school board websites used static features such as email, newsletters, and announcements for communication and did not provide access to parents for providing feedback through Web 2.0 features such as instant messaging. General recommendations were made so that school board administrators have the opportunity to implement changes in their school community with feasible modifications. Overall, Web 2.0-based technologies such as interactive communication tools and social media hold the most promise for enhancing parent–school relationships because they can help not only overcome barriers of time and distance, but also improve the parents’ desire to be engaged in children’s education experiences.

The purpose of this study was to explore elementary educators’ knowledge of moral development, how this knowledge relates to their beliefs and sense of efficacy pertaining to character education practices and the socio-moral reasoning of their students. It was hypothesized that educators’ beliefs and practices related to character education would reflect their pedagogy rather than knowledge of moral development theory. It was further hypothesized that there would be differences in student socio-moral reasoning specifically the beliefs and desires that guide actions would differ based on grade and gender. This mixed-method study employing self-report questionnaires, open response vignettes, and semi-structured educator interviews yielded quantitative and qualitative data. Findings indicated socio-moral reasoning of students differed according to grade (age) and gender. Knowledge of moral development theory was found to vary among participants however some practices employed by educators did align with a social cognitive approach to moral development. Significant variables identified consistently among educator and student participants included, autonomy, social competence, sense of school community, and supportiveness. These variables, in conjunction with a sense of fairness, have been identified elsewhere as foundational to moral development (Nucci, 2009), and intrinsic motivation (Ryan & Deci, 2000) and are relevant to educators working to develop student socio-moral reasoning as an aspect of character.

In the aftermath of World War II, a wave of Dutch Reformed immigrants arrived in Ontario, many of whom joined the Christian Reformed Church. Following familiar cultural patterns, history, and their Reformed Christian faith, these immigrants settled in Ontario with remarkable institutional completeness (Breton, 1964). They quickly established independent, parent-operated Christian schools across Ontario. The primary purpose of the schools was to educate children through a comprehensive biblically based school program, yet this religious purpose often intersected with a Dutch immigrant ethnic culture. Van Dijk (2001) states that “the schools were the most important organization in maintaining the religious and ethnic identity of Calvinists” (p. 66). In this qualitative study I explore the intersection of Reformed faith and Dutch Canadian immigrant ethnic culture in Christian schools through the experiential and professional lens of eight retired principals. Employing a theoretical framework informed by Berger’s (1967) Sacred Canopy, I suggest that the intersection of faith and culture was experienced in the schools and was embodied by the schools themselves. Findings point to this intersection being located in the participants’ experience of (a) Dutchness, (b) the struggle for Christian education, (c) the ties that bound the school community together, and (d) the cloud of witnesses that founded and continues to support and encourage the Christian school community. The study offers insight into a Dutch Reformed immigrant group’s experience carving out a niche for themselves on the educational landscape in Ontario. This study also offers suggestions on how Christian schools can broaden their canopy and become more ethnically and denominationally diverse in the future.

This paper is focused on the robot mobile platform PRIM (platform robot information multimedia). This robot has been made in order to cover two main needs of our group, on one hand the need for a full open mobile robotic platform that is very useful in fulfilling the teaching and research activity of our school community, and on the other hand with the idea of introducing an ethical product which would be useful as mobile multimedia information point as a service tool. This paper introduces exactly how the system is made up and explains just what the philosophy is behind this work. The navigation strategies and sensor fusion, where machine vision system is the most important one, are oriented towards goal achievement and are the key to the behaviour of the robot

ABSTRACT: The aim of this Master's thesis was to analyze and characterize the activities of the educational service and communication strategies of the Casa Museu Leal da Câmara (CMLC). Starting from a case study, we have sought to present future prospects for extending the public, the activities and these communication actions from CMLC to the museums of the same type. This research focuses on the period from 2003 to 2011, i.e. (that is), since the creation of the educational service to the present day. To better understand the object of this study it is necessary to present the artist / patron and the territory around CMLC (Rinchoa) where it belongs, as well as the community that inhabits the Municipality of Sintra. This community, formerly known as rustic (saloia) has influenced the artist's work and his activities. There were conducted surveys about the educational service to further understand the target of the educational activities. This was intended to determine the level of school and non school public satisfaction with this service and the main needs for its extension to the general public. To understand the visibility and the means by which the public was aware of the CMLC an inquiry was held on the communication methods. In addition to inquiries about the educational service and communication six interviews were also carried out, three of which to the leaders of the Municipality of Sintra directly linked to the policies of the CMLC and the others to partners and participants in the activities of educational services. After analyzing all the data we have concluded that the target audience of educational services is the school public and that the CMLC is visited mostly by the local school community. Most visitors became aware of the CMLC through other means as school or workplace and not through the media where the CMLC is often released.

ABSTRACT: This work focuses on the democratic self-management of the school, a subject not much discussed in the educational reality of Cabo Verde, although its relevance, especially since the time that the legislation proposes the democratization of the school management. The importance given by the Ministry of Education to the participation of the families and other segments of the educational community is expressed and emphasized in the ordinance that regulates the organization and operation of secondary schools. This fact in conjunction with the theoretical underpinning that it is not enough to enact in order that the school management become democratic, we question the extent in which democratic management, understood as a space of power sharing and negotiation, has been constructed and / or conquered, in secondary schools. Facing that problem, this study aims to investigate in which extent the school democratic management, as proposed by the Decree-Law No. 20/2002 of the 19th August, is being built or conquered in secondary education. The theoretical underpinning for the analysis performed is based in the works of Barroso, Lima, Patermam, Bordenave, Romão and Gadotti, among others. Thus, the present research has a descriptive and analytical approach. From this perspective, and according with the adopted methodology, it was chosen a public high school as the research field, where members of the Board, members of the students association, staff and parents were listened through interviews and surveys. The research allowed us to realize that, in the context examined, the implementation process of a democratic school management still needs to mature. In fact, the educational actors are already able to verbalize an articulate discourse on the subject, but they do not call themselves to take the responsibility of promoting or create incentives for the effective participation of the whole school community in the decision making process or in the building a common educational project.

When it comes to school inclusion it becomes essential to study the interactions that take place among students in a classroom, it is essential that they have positive attitudes in these interactions (Roldão, 2007). These attitudes do not appear suddenly in a child, so the attitudes demonstrated by schools, teachers and parents, are factors that influence the attitudes of students towards peers with disabilities. Objective: This study aims to analyze the attitudes of students said "normal" face to the inclusion of peers with disabilities in physical education classes, ensuring that these attitudes vary according to the school cycle. Method: This study is based on 520 students that attend the 2nd cycle, 3rd cycle and secondary, ages between 10 and 20 years old. The instrument used was a questionnaire AID - EF (Leitão, 2011), to analyze the students attitudes towards the inclusion of students with disabilities in their physical education classes (EF). Results: Overall, the attitudes of students said "normal" face to the inclusion of peers with disabilities in PE classes, do not vary depending on the cycle of education (p = 0.074). Still, the following variables showed that: the group of students attending secondary, manifested significantly more positive attitudes to the disadvantages of including, in relation to other cycles of education (p <0.001). As for the attitudes of students towards interSupport / cooperation between students with and without disabilities, it was found that secondary school students have significantly more positive attitudes (p <0.001), with regard to students perceptions in relation to teachers attitudes regarding inclusion, it was found that there are significant differences in the three cycles of education, 2nd cycle students present more positive attitudes, followed by 3th cycle students and then secondary students (p <0.001)it was also found that students from the 2nd cycle have significantly less positive attitudes compared with those of their parents have in relation to the inclusion of students with disabilities in PE classes ( p = 0.002). Conclusions: This study shows that in general students tend to show positive attitudes towards the inclusion of students with disabilities in PE classes, but is still far from the expected and desired, it is urgent and necessary that we have a revolution of values and attitudes in school community.
