In worldwide aviation operations, bird collisions with aircraft and ingestions into engine inlets present safety hazards and financial loss through equipment damage, loss of service and disruption to operations. The problem is encountered by all types of aircraft, both military and commercial. Modern aircraft engines have achieved a high level of reliability while manufacturers and users continually strive to further improve the safety record. A major safety concern today includes common-cause events which involve significant power loss on more than one engine. These are externally-inflicted occurrences, with the most frequent being encounters with flocks of birds. Most frequently these encounters occur during flight operations in the area on or near airports, near the ground instead of at cruise altitude conditions. This paper focuses on the increasing threat to aircraft and engines posed by the recorded growth in geese populations in North America. Service data show that goose strikes are increasing, especially in North America, consistent with the growing resident geese populations estimated by the United States Department of Agriculture (USDA). Airport managers, along with the governmental authorities, need to develop a strategy to address this large flocking bird issue. This paper also presents statistics on the overall status of the bird threat for birds of all sizes in North America relative to other geographic regions. Overall, the data shows that Canada and the USA have had marked improvements in controlling the threat from damaging birds - except for the increase in geese strikes. To reduce bird ingestion hazards, more aggressive corrective measures are needed in international air transport to reduce the chances of serious incidents or accidents from bird ingestion encounters. Air transport authorities must continue to take preventative and avoidance actions to counter the threat of birdstrikes to aircraft. The primary objective of this paper is to increase awareness of, and focus attention on, the safety hazards presented by large flocking birds such as geese. In the worst case, multiple engine power loss due to large bird ingestion could result in an off-airport forced landing accident. Hopefully, such awareness will prompt governmental regulatory agencies to address the hazards associated with growing populations of geese in North America.

In this study, particulate matter (PM) were characterized from a place impacted by heavy-duty vehicles (Bus Station) fuelled with diesel/biodiesel fuel blend (B3) in the city of Londrina, Brazil. Sixteen priority polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons (PAH) concentrations were analyzed in the samples by their association with atmospheric PM, mass size distributions and major ions (fluorite, chloride, bromide, nitrate, phosphate, sulfate, nitrite, oxalate; fumarate, formate, succinate and acetate; lithium, sodium, potassium, magnesium, calcium and ammonium). Results indicate that major ions represented 21.2% particulate matter mass. Nitrate, sulfate, and ammonium, respectively, presented the highest concentration levels, indicating that biodiesel may also be a significant source for these ions, especially nitrate. Dibenzo[a,h]anthracene and indeno[1,2,3,-cd]pyrene were the main PAH found, and a higher fraction of PAH particles was found in diameters lower than 0.25 mu m in Londrina bus station. The fine and ultrafine particles were dominant among the PM evaluated, suggesting that biodiesel decreases the total PAH emission. However, it does also increase the fraction of fine and ultrafine particles when compared to diesel.

Models are becoming increasingly important in the software development process. As a consequence, the number of models being used is increasing, and so is the need for efficient mechanisms to search them. Various existing search engines could be used for this purpose, but they lack features to properly search models, mainly because they are strongly focused on text-based search. This paper presents Moogle, a model search engine that uses metamodeling information to create richer search indexes and to allow more complex queries to be performed. The paper also presents the results of an evaluation of Moogle, which showed that the metamodel information improves the accuracy of the search.

Background In ROCKET AF, rivaroxaban was non-inferior to adjusted-dose warfarin in preventing stroke or systemic embolism among patients with atrial fibrillation (AF). We aimed to investigate whether the efficacy and safety of rivaroxaban compared with warfarin is consistent among the subgroups of patients with and without previous stroke or transient ischaemic attack (TIA). Methods In ROCKET AF, patients with AF who were at increased risk of stroke were randomly assigned (1:1) in a double-blind manner to rivaroxaban 20 mg daily or adjusted dose warfarin (international normalised ratio 2-0-3.0). Patients and investigators were masked to treatment allocation. Between Dec 18,2006, and June 17,2009,14 264 patients from 1178 centres in 45 countries were randomly assigned. The primary endpoint was the composite of stroke or non-CNS systemic embolism. In this substudy we assessed the interaction of the treatment effects of rivaroxaban and warfarin among patients with and without previous stroke or TIA. Efficacy analyses were by intention to treat and safety analyses were done in the on-treatment population. ROCKET AF is registered with ClinicalTrials.gov, number NCT00403767. Findings 7468 (52%) patients had a previous stroke (n=4907) or TIA (n=2561) and 6796 (48%) had no previous stroke or TIA. The number of events per 100 person-years for the primary endpoint in patients treated with rivaroxaban compared with warfarin was consistent among patients with previous stroke or TIA (2.79% rivaroxaban vs 2.96% warfarin; hazard ratio [HR] 0-94,95% CI 0.77-1.16) and those without (1.44% vs 1.88%; 0.77, 0.58-1-01; interaction p=0.23). The number of major and non-major clinically relevant bleeding events per 100 person-years in patients treated with rivaroxaban compared with warfarin was consistent among patients with previous stroke or TIA (13.31% rivaroxaban vs 13.87% warfarin; HR 0.96,95% CI 0.87-1-07) and those without (16.69% vs 15.19%; 1.10, 0.99-1.21; interaction p=0.08). Interpretation There was no evidence that the relative efficacy and safety of rivaroxaban compared with warfarin was different between patients who had a previous stroke or TIA and those who had no previous stroke or TIA. These results support the use of rivaroxaban as an alternative to warfarin for prevention of recurrent as well as initial stroke in patients with AF.

Il panorama delle aziende italiane è costellato da una moltitudine di piccoli attori largamente specializzati in mansioni definite. Sono le piccole e le medie imprese (PMI), aziende per lo più familiari e con meno di qualche decina di dipendenti, talvolta con un'importante storia alle loro spalle che, nonostante la crisi e l'avvento di Internet, sono riuscite a rimanere leader incontrastati nel loro settore. È proprio Internet infatti uno dei pericoli più grandi per esse. Settori che in passato erano presenti offline, negli uffici dove ci si rivolgeva per l'erogazione del servizio richiesto, oggi godono di una fortissima se non predominante attività online, come il settore della ricerca e della selezione del personale. Questo settore, in particolare, ha subito tutta l'influenza di Internet. Annunci, ricerche di lavoro, consulenze, sono quasi totalmente presenti attraverso il canale online. Tale cambiamento ha portato ad una scossa nel mercato, cambiando le modalità di offerta e di domanda dei servizi, determinando chi dovesse sopravvivere e chi no. È Internet stessa ad offrire uno strumento fondamentale per la rivalutazione delle proprie attività e il ritorno di piccole imprese a guidare il mercato, soprattutto nelle realtà locali. Riuscire ad avere il coraggio di affrontare il cambiamento che Internet impone, riorganizzando il proprio lavoro e la propria struttura, è oggi un trampolino di lancio per competere con i grandi head hunter del settore, con aziende del calibro di Monster che sembrano ormai irrangiungibili. Li pensiamo irrangiungibili perché dominanti nei motori di ricerca: sistemi che veicolano attraverso di essi l'informazione e che oggi sono lo strumento che tutti noi quotidianamente utilizziamo per raggiungere le aziende e i loro servizi. I motori di ricerca sono però anche il luogo più democratico della rete. Non sono i soldi o la forza numerica data dell'essere una grande azienda a determinare il posizionamento in essi. È invece la capacità di inviduare e focalizzare il proprio core business che offre la possibilità di primeggiare tra le realtà locali, siano esse a livello provinciale o regionale ad esempio. In queste realtà, in questi settori, non sono i grandi attori internazionali ad avere più possibilità di successo ma sono le attività vicine al territorio ad esserne i leader. Capire questo e agire sulle leve che permettano alle PMI di dirigere il mercato è l'obiettivo di questa tesi. La tesi inizia con una analisi dei principali motori di ricerca italiani, di come sono strutturati e come essi riescono a valutare chi possa essere presente per una determinata keyword e chi non possa esserlo ma soprattutto la qualità attribuita e la posizione assunta. L'argomentazione viene sviluppata su due differenti percorsi: il primo analitico, dove vengono presentati i motori di ricerca, i loro algoritmi, la loro storia e la loro evoluzione futura, per capire come poter essere presenti oggi e come poter esserlo domani. La seconda parte è invece operativa, analizzando Teseo: un'agenzia di ricerca e selezione del personale operante a livello regionale nell'Emilia Romagna e fortemente specializzata in alcune attività molto specifiche. E' stato prodotto un prototipo di sito studiando i punti di forza e le debolezze di sistemi come WordPress e, infine, il lavoro punta alla sua messa online, al confronto tra i risultati raggiunti dal vecchio sito e quelli ottenuti con il nuovo, con una parte finale dedicata a delle attività collaterali e alla valutazione di strategie future sul lungo periodo. Nel settore della ricerca e della selezione del personale via Internet, come può una PMI sopravvivere contro i grandi head hunter?

This research work presents the design and implementation of a FFT pruning block, which is an extension to the FFT core for OFDM demodulation, enabling run-time 8 pruning of the FFT algorithm, without any restrictions on the distribution pattern of the active/inactive sub-carriers. The design and implementation of FFT processor core is not the part of this work. The whole design was prototyped on an ALTERA STRATIX V FPGA to evaluate the performance of the pruning engine. Synthesis and simulation results showed that the logic overhead introduced by the pruning block is limited to a 10% of the total resources utilization. Moreover, in presence of a medium-high scattering of the sub-carriers, power and energy consumption of the FFT core were reduced by a 30% factor.

DI Diesel engine are widely used both for industrial and automotive applications due to their durability and fuel economy. Nonetheless, increasing environmental concerns force that type of engine to comply with increasingly demanding emission limits, so that, it has become mandatory to develop a robust design methodology of the DI Diesel combustion system focused on reduction of soot and NOx simultaneously while maintaining a reasonable fuel economy. In recent years, genetic algorithms and CFD three-dimensional combustion simulations have been successfully applied to that kind of problem. However, combining GAs optimization with actual CFD three-dimensional combustion simulations can be too onerous since a large number of calculations is usually needed for the genetic algorithm to converge, resulting in a high computational cost and, thus, limiting the suitability of this method for industrial processes. In order to make the optimization process less time-consuming, CFD simulations can be more conveniently used to generate a training set for the learning process of an artificial neural network which, once correctly trained, can be used to forecast the engine outputs as a function of the design parameters during a GA optimization performing a so-called virtual optimization. In the current work, a numerical methodology for the multi-objective virtual optimization of the combustion of an automotive DI Diesel engine, which relies on artificial neural networks and genetic algorithms, was developed.

The development of a multibody model of a motorbike engine cranktrain is presented in this work, with an emphasis on flexible component model reduction. A modelling methodology based upon the adoption of non-ideal joints at interface locations, and the inclusion of component flexibility, is developed: both are necessary tasks if one wants to capture dynamic effects which arise in lightweight, high-speed applications. With regard to the first topic, both a ball bearing model and a journal bearing model are implemented, in order to properly capture the dynamic effects of the main connections in the system: angular contact ball bearings are modelled according to a five-DOF nonlinear scheme in order to grasp the crankshaft main bearings behaviour, while an impedance-based hydrodynamic bearing model is implemented providing an enhanced operation prediction at the conrod big end locations. Concerning the second matter, flexible models of the crankshaft and the connecting rod are produced. The well-established Craig-Bampton reduction technique is adopted as a general framework to obtain reduced model representations which are suitable for the subsequent multibody analyses. A particular component mode selection procedure is implemented, based on the concept of Effective Interface Mass, allowing an assessment of the accuracy of the reduced models prior to the nonlinear simulation phase. In addition, a procedure to alleviate the effects of modal truncation, based on the Modal Truncation Augmentation approach, is developed. In order to assess the performances of the proposed modal reduction schemes, numerical tests are performed onto the crankshaft and the conrod models in both frequency and modal domains. A multibody model of the cranktrain is eventually assembled and simulated using a commercial software. Numerical results are presented, demonstrating the effectiveness of the implemented flexible model reduction techniques. The advantages over the conventional frequency-based truncation approach are discussed.

Traditionally, the study of internal combustion engines operation has focused on the steady-state performance. However, the daily driving schedule of automotive engines is inherently related to unsteady conditions. There are various operating conditions experienced by (diesel) engines that can be classified as transient. Besides the variation of the engine operating point, in terms of engine speed and torque, also the warm up phase can be considered as a transient condition. Chapter 2 has to do with this thermal transient condition; more precisely the main issue is the performance of a Selective Catalytic Reduction (SCR) system during cold start and warm up phases of the engine. The proposal of the underlying work is to investigate and identify optimal exhaust line heating strategies, to provide a fast activation of the catalytic reactions on SCR. Chapters 3 and 4 focus the attention on the dynamic behavior of the engine, when considering typical driving conditions. The common approach to dynamic optimization involves the solution of a single optimal-control problem. However, this approach requires the availability of models that are valid throughout the whole engine operating range and actuator ranges. In addition, the result of the optimization is meaningful only if the model is very accurate. Chapter 3 proposes a methodology to circumvent those demanding requirements: an iteration between transient measurements to refine a purpose-built model and a dynamic optimization which is constrained to the model validity region. Moreover all numerical methods required to implement this procedure are presented. Chapter 4 proposes an approach to derive a transient feedforward control system in an automated way. It relies on optimal control theory to solve a dynamic optimization problem for fast transients. From the optimal solutions, the relevant information is extracted and stored in maps spanned by the engine speed and the torque gradient.

In questo elaborato viene descritto il lavoro svolto per sviluppare un generatore procedurale di ambienti per videogiochi, più propriamente definiti con il temine dungeon. Lo strumento creato viene integrato all'interno del game engine Unity ed è di carattere generale: può essere utilizzato per qualunque gioco che richieda una generazione procedurale di livelli.

La presente tesi illustra e discute due attività legate all'ambito dei siti web, ovvero la localizzazione e l'ottimizzazione per i motori di ricerca (o SEO, dall'inglese "Search Engine Optimization"). Quest'ultima è un'attività mirata a permettere che i siti stessi ottengano un posizionamento migliore nella pagina dei risultati dei motori di ricerca e siano dunque più visibili agli utenti. Poiché la SEO prevede vari interventi sui siti web, alcuni dei quali implicano la manipolazione di codice HTML, essa viene spesso considerata come un'attività strettamente informatica. L'obiettivo della presente tesi, dunque, è quello di illustrare come i traduttori possano sfruttare le proprie competenze linguistiche per dedicarsi non soltanto alla localizzazione di siti web, ma anche alla loro ottimizzazione per i motori di ricerca. Per dimostrare l'applicabilità di tali tecniche è stato utilizzato come esempio pratico il sito web de "Il Palio di San Donato", un sito gestito dal Comune di Cividale del Friuli e finalizzato alla descrizione dell'omonima rievocazione storica cittadina. La tesi si compone di quattro capitoli. Nel primo capitolo vengono introdotti i principi teorici alla base della localizzazione di siti web, della SEO, della scrittura per il web e della traduzione per il settore turistico. Nel secondo capitolo, invece, viene descritto il sito del Palio di San Donato, esaminandone in particolare la struttura e i contenuti. Il terzo capitolo è dedicato alla descrizione del progetto di localizzazione a cui è stato sottoposto il sito in esame. Infine, il quarto capitolo contiene un breve commento relativo alle problematiche linguistiche, culturali e tecnologiche riscontrate durante il processo traduttivo e un elenco di strategie di SEO applicate a cinque pagine del sito web in esame, selezionate sulla base della possibilità di illustrare il maggior numero possibile di interventi di SEO attuabili dai traduttori.
