Proceedings of the 16th Australian Weeds Conference

Invitation to attend: On behalf of the organising committee of the 16th Australian Weeds Conference, we cordially invite you to attend this biannual conference to be held in Cairns, Australia, 19-22 May 2008. The conference will be hosted by the Weed Society of Queensland and has the theme of ‘Weed Management 2008 – hot topics in the tropics’. The conference will showcase recent advances in weed science, extension and policy across Australian and international communities and landscapes. The program for the conference includes plenary, oral, and poster sessions and trade exhibitors. The conference will appeal to anyone involved in weed R & D, management and extension and will be a great opportunity to build new networks and explore existing ones. Portrait of Mathilde Wiener Monasch (?) d.1864.

Mrs. Monasch is shown as a young woman wearing a gray translucent shawl and a lace bonnet with ornate flaps coming down over the ears. Some of her black hair is showing. She is shown in a 3/4 view; the eyes are lustrous, the corners of the mouth are raised in a half smile. On backing of original frame: "Zum Andencken von Ihren Schwiegersohn, J. Wollstein d. 20th February 1839" (In memory of your son-in-law J. Wollstein Feb 20th, 1839).

This is a half-length view of a dandyish, youthfull man, depcited against a distant landscape. The composition is well coordianted.

It is a bust-length, with three-quarter view. The portrait is of the highest technical quality aswell as a good chatacter study.

Visionary Portrait.

The expressionist head of a young man emerges from the dark shadows. His face is a long oval, with full lips and strongly flared nostrils, framed by black hair and small black beard.

Portrait of Bernhard Wolffenstein (1803-1848)

The sitter was Dr.Ernst Hamburgers (of the L.B.I.Executive Commitee) great grandfather, a master dyer in Berlin by profession. He is shown almost frontally, smiling, dressed up in a suit and fancy shirt.

Graenum Berger papers, undated, (1825)-2002

Contains correspondence, minutes, reports, clippings, manuscripts, research materials, journal articles, photographs and publications; primarily relating to Berger's involvement with Ethiopian Jewry and his efforts to bring about their rescue through the organization he formed, the American Association for Ethiopian Jews. Also contains material from Berger's other interests- his writings, travels through the world and to Israel and Ethiopia, community affiliations, research in Black American Jews, profession as a Jewish social work executive, his commitment to Jewish causes and to Israel. There are also many personal and biographical materials from the numerous long-term friendships and associations he established.

Contains business correspondence, accounts and documents relating to Jacob Franks of New York, his two sons, Moses and David, a nephew, Isaac, and a John Franks of Halifax, possibly a member of the family.

La reinserción social de los ex-presidiarios en la Argentina de las primeras décadas del siglo XX : algunos comentarios biográficos sobre Jorge H. Frías, fundador del Patronato de Liberados y Excarcelados de la Capital Federal

Resumen: Este trabajo pretende avanzar sobre una problemática escasamente abordada por la historiografía jurídica y social argentina: la reinserción social de los egresados de las prisiones. Así, partiendo de la utilidad que tienen para la historiografía los estudios biográficos y de instituciones penitenciarias y post-penitenciarias, analizaremos algunos aspectos de la labor profesional de Jorge H. Frías, distinguido jurista, presidente de la Cámara de Apelaciones en lo Criminal y Correccional y fundador en 1918 de la primera institución de reinserción social de la Argentina: el Patronato de Liberados y Excarcelados de la Capital Federal. Esperamos que este breve trabajo contribuya a alentar la realización de otros estudios sobre diferentes aspectos del universo penitenciario argentino (directores de presidios, viajeros penitenciarios, congresos penitenciarios nacionales e internacionales, revistas de los funcionarios de prisiones, etc.) que aún hoy en día permanecen desconocidos.
