The facile synthesis of optically active polypyrrole has been achieved via the enantioselective electropolymerization of pyrrole on indium-tin-oxide-coated glass electrodes in aqueous solution containing D-(+) or L-(-) tartaric acid, (1S)-(+)-10-camphorsulfonic acid and L-lactic acid. The dark films of conducting polypyrroles salt formed under electrostatic conditions (+0.65V vs. Ag/AgCl) exhibited strong circular dichroism (CD) spectra typical of polymers possessing helical chirality. The quantitative reversal of the CD spectrum of the salt grown in (+)-tartaric acid as opposed to (-)-tartaric acid suggests that electropolymerization is highly enantioselective, with one helical screw of the polymer chain being preferentially produced depending on the hand of the tartaric anion incorporated. Poly(ether urethane) cationomers based on poly(oxytetramethylene), 4,4'-bibenzyldiisocyanate, N-methyldiethanolamine as chain extender, and acrylic acid/poly(acrylic acid) as quaternization agent were synthesized. Pyrrole (15 wt.-%) was polymerized in films of the ionomer containing CuCl2. The films were characterized by dynamic mechanical analysis, thermogravimetry and differential scanning calorimetry. The electric conductivity of the film without polypyrrole is 7.5 . 10(-12) Omega(-1)cm(-1), while incorporation of polypyrrole increases the conductivity to 4.5 . 10(-6) Omega(-1) cm(-1).

The ESR of PPy films doped with Co (W2O7)(6)(10-) and CuW12O406- ions were reported and discussed. Results show that heteropolyanions not only play the role of neutralizing electricity in the PPy film, but also interact with the PPy molecular chain to form some adducts. The adducts affect the electronic structure of the PPy film and are unstable at more positive or more negative potentials. Dysonian ESR lineshape was recorded for the dry PPy film with CuW12O406- for the first time.

Reduction of hydrogen peroxide at a glassy carbon (GC) electrode modified with sigma-bonded pyrrole iron(III) octaethylporphyrin complex, (OEP)Fe(Pyr), was studied by cyclic voltammetry and a rotating disk electrode. In 0.1N NaOH solution, it is shown that such an (OEP)Fe(Pyr)/GC electrode has a significant catalytic activity towards hydrogen peroxide reduction (E(D) = -0.80 V, k = 0.066 cm s(-1)); however, the electrode stability is low. The deactivation is observed when the reaction charge (Q) is passing through the (OEP)Fe(Pyr)/GC disk electrode. A linear rotation scan method is applied to study the kinetic process by determining the disk electrochemical response (i(D)) to rotation rate (omega) at a definite disk potential (E(D)). Considering that the number of adsorbed electroreduced catalyst molecules (Red) varies according to the disk potential, a factor theta(= Gamma(Red)/(Gamma(Red) + Gamma(Ox))) is introduced to describe the electrode surface area fraction for electroreduced species. The obtained Koutecky-Levich equation is applicable whatever the potential is.

An integrated CaF2 crystal optically transparent infrared (ir) thin-layer cell was designed and constructed without using any soluble adhesive materials. It is suitable for both aqueous and nonaqueous systems, and can be used not only in ir but also in uv-vis studies. Excellent electrochemical and spectroelectrochemical responses were obtained in evaluating this cell by cyclic voltammetry and steady-state potential step measurements for both ir and uv-vis spectrolectrochemistry with ferri/ferrocyanide in aqueous solution, and with ferrocene/ferrocenium in organic solvent as the testing species, respectively. The newly designed ir cell was applied to investigate the electrochemical reduction process of bilirubin in situ, which provided direct information for identifying the structure of the reduction product and proposing the reaction mechanism.

Polypyrrole (PPy) film was synthesized by anodic polymerization of pyrrole onto the surface of platinum electrode in the solution of sodium p-toluene sulfonate (NaTsO). When this film was oxidized anodically in an aqueous solution of adenosine triphosphatle (ATP), the ATP anions were incorporated into the film. Release of ATP From the film could be accomplished by reduction of the film in aqueous electrolyte solution. The total amount of ATP released from the film was determined by UV spectroscopic method.

In this paper, the electrochemical behaviour of molibdosilicic heteropoly complex with dysprosium K10H3[Dy(SiMo11O39)(2)]. xH(2)O [denoted as Dy(SiMo11)(2)] was studied. Voltammetric behavior of this complex was greatly influenced by pH of solutions. The polypyrrole (PPy) film doped with this complex was prepared by electropolymerization of pyrrole in the presence of Dy(SiMo11)(2) under potential cycling conditions. The microenvironment within the PPy film has an effect on the electrochemical behavior of Dy(SiMo11)(2) entrapped in the film. The film electrode can catalyze the reduction of ClO3- and BrO3-.

A phosphomolybdic anion doped polypyrrole (PMo12O403- + PPy) film electrode has been prepared by electrochemical polymerization of pyrrole in an aqueous solution of 0.5 mol l-1 H2SO4 or 0.5 mol l-1 KNO3 containing PMo12O403- anions, and characterized by scanning electron microscopy and in-situ UV-visible spectroelectrochemical methods. The film electrode obtained is very stable upon potential cycling in acidic solution, but not in neutral solution. The catalytic effect of the film electrode on the reduction of ClO3- and BrO3- was studied.

Anionic colloid cupric hexacyanoferrate (CuHCF) was incorporated into polypyrrole (PPy) films in the course of electrochemical polymerization of pyrrole from aqueous solution containing pyrrole and CuHCF colloid. The films obtained were dark brown in color. Three redox peaks appeared in the cyclic voltammogram (CV). The peaks around 0.7 V (vs, SCE) showed cation-selective properties. X-ray photoelectron spectroscopic analysis and ultraviolet-visible (UV-vis) spectroscopic properties of the film were investigated.

The potential-response of a microdisk electrode made with a chloride-doped polypyrrole (PPY) film on a carbon fibre (CF) has been examined. The effect of the polymerization conditions on the response characteristics is discussed. The optimum conditions for preparing the electrode are: cycling potential from +0.8 to +1.0 V in 0.1-0.2M pyrrole (Py) containing 0.1M LiCl, electropolymerization time 15-20 min. The electrode gives a Nernstian response of 56-58 mV/pCl and a detection limit of 3.6 x 10(-5)M chloride. It has the advantages of low resistance, short conditioning time and fast response. It has been used satisfactorily for detection of chloride in serum.
