One feature of the modern nutrition transition is the growing consumption of animal proteins. The most common approach in the quantitative analysis of this change used to be the study of averages of food consumption. But this kind of analysis seems to be incomplete without the knowledge of the number of consumers. Data about consumers are not usually published in historical statistics. This article introduces a methodological approach for reconstructing consumer populations. This methodology is based on some assumptions about the diffusion process of foodstuffs and the modeling of consumption patterns with a log-normal distribution. This estimating process is illustrated with the specific case of milk consumption in Spain between 1925 and 1981. These results fit quite well with other data and indirect sources available showing that this dietary change was a slow and late process. The reconstruction of consumer population could shed a new light in the study of nutritional transitions.

The penetration of marbofloxacin into tonsils was assessed in fattening pigs. Two different dosages were used to treat the animals: 2 mg/kg b.w. every 24 hours during 3 days (P1 group) and 4 mg/kg b.w. every 48 hours two times (P2 group. A ratio between the mean tonsillar concentration of marbofloxacin for both doses 24 hours after the last administration (0.5 and 0.7 µgr/mL) and its MIC90 for APP (0.03 µgr/mL) was calculated. These Ratio values were 16.6 and 23.3 for P1 and P2 group.

Una proporció elevada de pacients amb cirrosi presenta una disminució de la massa muscular, fatiga, escassa tolerància a l’esforç i disminució de la qualitat de vida que limita en major o menor grau la seva activitat habitual. S’ha suggerit que alguns d’aquests pacients poden millorar si fan un exercici moderat. Un programa d’exercici físic moderat dirigit a pacients amb cirrosi hepàtica compensada com a tractament complementari, podria augmentar la tolerància a l’esforç, la massa muscular i millorar la qualitat de vida, y pot ser, el pronòstic dels pacients amb cirrosi

The objective of this study was to evaluate the effect of vaccination against GnRH on performance traits, pig behaviour and acute phase proteins. A total of 120 pigs (36 non-castrated males, NCM; 36 males to be vaccinated, IM; 24 castratedmales, CM; and 24 females, FE)were controlled in groups of 12 in pens with feeding stations allowing the recording of individual feed intake. The two vaccinations (Improvac®) were applied at a mean age of 77 and 146 days. All pigswere individually weighed every 3 weeks from the mean ages of 74 to 176 days and backfat thickness (BT) and loinmuscle depth (LD) were also recorded ultrasonically. Twelve group-housed pigs for each treatment were video recorded during 2 consecutive days at weeks 9, 11, 20, 21, 23 and 25 of age to score the number of inactive or active pigs in each treatment group by scan sampling. Aggressive behaviour by the feeder and away from the feeder, and mounting behaviour was also scored by focal sampling. Blood samples from 12 NCM, 12 CM and 12 IM were taken to determine the concentration of circulating acute phase protein Pig-MAP atweeks 1, 2, 4, 11, 13, 21 and 25 of age. After slaughter, the number of skin lesions on the left half carcasswas scored. IMpresented overall a higher growth rate and daily feed intake compared to NCM (Pb0.05),whereas their feed conversion ratios did not differ significantly. In comparison with CM, IM presented a better feed conversion ratio (Pb0.05), since their overall dailyweight gaindid not differ significantly, butIM ate less. Final leanmeat percentage of IM and CM was lower compared to that of NCM (Pb0.05). Activity, mounting and aggressive behaviour of NCM was higher than in IM, CM and FE after the second vaccination. Pig-MAP concentrationswere significantly elevated just after surgical castrationand after bothadministrations of the vaccine (Pb0.05), but concentrations subsequently decreased throughout time. Skin lesions of NCM were significantly higher compared to that of IM and FE (Pb0.05). The effects of vaccination were especially remarkable after the second dose, when the higher feed intake and lower activity of IM compared to NCMmight result in higher final body weight and more fat. Results from this study indicate that some welfare aspects such as a reduced aggression and mounting behaviour may be improved by vaccination against GnRH, together with productive benefits like adequate feed conversion ratio and daily weight gain.

The purpose of this paper is to provide a comparative analysis of pork value chains in Catalonia, Spain and Manitoba, Canada. Intensive hog production models were implemented in Catalonia in the 1960s as a result of agriculture crises and fostered by feedstuffs factories. The expansion of the hog sector in Manitoba is more recent (in the 1990s) and brought about in large part by the opening of the Maple Leaf Meats processing plant in Brandon, Manitoba. This plant is capable of processing 90,000 hogs per week. Both hog production models ‐ the ‘older’ one in Catalonia (Spain) and the ‘newer’ in Manitoba‐ have been, until recently, examples of success. Inventories and production have been increasing substantially and both regions have proven to have great export potential. Recently, however, tensions have been developing with the hog production models of both regions, particularly as they relate to environmental concerns. The purpose of the paper is to compare the value chains with respect to their origins (e.g. supply a growing demand for pork, ensure farm profitability) and present states (e.g. environmental concerns, profitability). This article examines the governance structures for managing the location and operation of Intensive Livestock Farming Operations (ILFOs). The article focuses on the hog sector and compares two very different jurisdictions: the Province of Manitoba, Canada and the Autonomous Community of Catalonia, Spain. Both are regions that have witnessed recent increases in hog production, including increasing spatial concentration of ILFOs and increasing size of those ILFOs. Policy has both fostered and sought to manage the increased production. Following a brief background description of restructuring, the changing legislative framework for Manitoba and Catalonia are described. Report for the scientific sojourn at the Université de Bourgogne, France, from July until October 2007..Surlie ageing after second fermentation is a fundamental operation in the production of quality sparkling wine like Cava and Champagne. Recently, the importance of the interaction between wine and lees cell surface has been reported. Cell surface properties depending on wall biochemical composition are major determinants in microbial interactions, having important repercussions in several technological aspects. Sorption and flocculation are especially important in sparkling wine production, and are governed by distinct cell surface properties. The aim of the present research carried out during the four months of the stage was to know the implication of lees surface modifications occurring during surlie ageing in sparkling wine quality and elaboration. The relationship between physico-chemical properties such as hydrophobicity, charge and electron-donor characteristics, and the yeast surface sorption capacities, we determined these factors in a model system. Then, real industrial lees samples were investigated. The surface properties of sparkling wine lees from the same strain of Saccharomyces cerevisiae were characterized according to the time of surlie ageing, and their possible influence on lees sorption and flocculation capacity was evaluated. El proyecto tiene como objetivo el desarrollo de una aplicación web para la gestión de proyectos de investigación que se llevan a cabo por el Servei de Nutrició i Benestar Animal (SNiBA) de la Universitat Autònoma de Barcelona. La aplicación ha de ser una herramienta para facilitar la organización y administración, al personal del centro, de los diferentes proyectos de I+D que son realizados por esta entidad. SNiBA ya dispone de una aplicación para este fin pero con ciertas carencias. Con esta aplicación se pretende facilitar y mejorar el proceso de gestión de los servicios que ofrece SNIBA de forma que el personal pueda ofrecer un mejor servicio a sus clientes.

La influenza es una enfermedad de gran importancia debido a su impacto sanitario y social. La especie porcina tiene importancia epidemiológica debido a su capacidad de actuar como eslabón adaptando los virus aviares a los mamíferos. Un mejor conocimiento de la enfermedad en la especie porcina permitirá definir mejor los métodos de lucha frente la enfermedad tanto en la especie humana como en la porcina. En el presente proyecto se pretende determinar los subtipos de virus influenza actualmente presentes en la cabaña porcina de España y estimar su seroprevalencia, así como estudiar los factores de riesgo que predisponen a la presencia de los virus influenza en las granjas de porcino. Para ello, se realizará una encuesta seroepidemiológica en la que se recogerán muestras de suero de animales de distintas edades (cerdas y cerdos de engorde) y se reunirán datos correspondientes a las características de las distintas explotaciones mediante una encuesta epidemiológica. Por otro lado, y con el fin de determinar la dinámica de infección de la enfermedad, se llevará a cabo un estudio longitudinal en dos explotaciones de ciclo cerrado seropositivas frente a Influenza porcina. En éstas explotaciones se recogerán muestras de suero y de hisopos nasales de un lote entero de producción, en intervalos que oscilarán de semanalmente a mensualmente. Los animales se muestrearan desde las tres semanas de vida hasta que sean enviados al matadero (aproximadamente a los 6 meses de vida). A partir de las muestras obtenidas se realizaran pruebas diagnósticas de carácter virológico y serológico. Este estudio aportará información acerca de la diseminación de los virus influenza en las explotaciones de cerdos, por lo que refiere a su comportamiento endémico/epidémico, clinico/subclínico, etc.

L'exposition aux bactéries résistantes aux antibiotiques, en particulier à Staphylococcus aureus résistant à la méthicilline (SARM (1)) sur le lieu de travail, a été montrée comme étant un facteur de risque pour la santé des opérateurs, la fréquence des contacts avec cette bactérie augmentant la probabilité d'en devenir porteur. En plus du fait que les SARM augmentent d'un facteur 4 le risque d'infection chez le porteur, le choix du traitement antibiotique en cas d'infection est fortement limité. C'est pourquoi il est important d'identifier les environnements de travail et les conditions qui favorisent la transmission de cette bactérie de l'animal à l'Homme. La résistance à la méthicilline est conférée au S. aureus par un élément génétique mobile, appelé « staphylococcal cassette chromosome » mec (SCCmec), qui contient le gène de résistance à la méthicilline, mecA. SCCmec a cinq formes (I, II, III, IV and V) qui ont été acquises et intégrées dans le génome de S. aureus lors d'événements indépendants de transfert horizontal. Certaines de ces lignées spécifiquement associées au bétail traité aux antibiotiques (tel que le complexe clonal 398, CC398 (2)), peuvent également coloniser le nez humain. Ainsi, la colonisation nasale ou contamination a été constatée chez 23 à 86 % des agriculteurs et vétérinaires ayant un contact direct avec des porcs, ainsi que chez un à cinq pour cent des personnes ayant une exposition indirecte (par exemple les membres de la famille d'agriculteurs, les visiteurs de la ferme). La pathogénicité du SARM CC398 pour l'Homme a été documentée dans une série de rapports décrivant des cas d'endocardite, d'otomastoïdite et de pneumonie. En outre, le SARM CC398 a été introduit dans des structures de santé (hôpitaux, cliniques, etc.) situées principalement dans les zones d'élevage à forte densité. Si les porcs sont des vecteurs bien connus de transmission de CC398 à l'Homme, d'autres animaux peuvent l'être également, tels que les dindes en Allemagne, comme illustré par le premier article cité dans cette note. Par ailleurs, la propagation de ces souches résistantes aux antibiotiques est inquiétante. Le deuxième article de cette note révèle l'apparition de souches de CC398 dans le lait de vache au Royaume-Uni pays où, jusqu'alors, la surveillance n'en avait pas détecté.

Tradicionalmente la técnica para realizar una nefrectomía parcial ha sido previa inducción de isquemia renal (caliente o fría), habiéndose evidenciado que el daño producido por la isquemia-reperfusión es menor con la hipotermia. En relación al género, estudios experimentales demuestran mayor susceptibilidad de los machos a las lesiones renales de isquemia-reperfusión. El objetivo de este trabajo es comprobar si en cerdos monorrenos, la isquemia fría produce menor daño renal que la caliente, mediante marcadores bioquímicos y análisis anatomo-patológico, y así también valorar la existencia de estas diferencias según el sexo.

S’han estudiat un total de 75 mascles sencers (50% Pietrain, 25% Duroc i 25%Landrace) des de les dues setmanes de vida (±4,00kg) en el Centre de Control Porcí del’IRTA (CCP) fins les 24 hores posteriors al seu sacrifici (±100,00kg) a l’escorxador delCentre de Tecnologia de la Carn de l’IRTA (CTC). Al CCP es varen avaluar aspectes decomportament i benestar animal, així com diferents paràmetres de consums icreixements individuals de cada animal. A l’escorxador del CTC es van avaluar lescaracterístiques de qualitat de la canal i la carn de les 75 canals provinents dels animals estudiats. Les dades de consum individual es van poder recollir mitjançant el sistema SACA (Sistema Automàtic de Consum d’Aliment) que permet saber quins són elsconsums individuals de cada animal i en quin moment del dia es produeixen les sevesvisites a la menjadora.L’objectiu era determinar l’efecte del dejuni en granja (DJ) i del temps d’esperaen l’escorxador (TE) sobre el benestar animal, la qualitat de la canal i la carn de porc iel que es van anomenar altres variables i ràtios. També es van analitzar els consumsindividuals d’aliment per cada animal. Es van tenir en compte dos períodes de dejuni (2i 12 hores) i tres temps d’espera en l’escorxador (0, 5 i 10 hores)
