The use of new technologies based on microstructured reactors in industrial processes, including the obtainment of hydrogen peroxide, the catalytic oxidation of ammonia, the utilization of rocket fuels, fine organic synthesis, polymerization, and phase transfer catalysis, were considered. The transition to microtechnologies considerably increases the performance of the process; at the same time, the product yield increases as compared with periodically operating reactors, which allows for a reduction of costs at the separation stage of the reaction mixture and the extraction of the reaction products.

Small off-road engines (SORE) have been recognised as a major source of air pollution. It is estimated that non handheld SORE annually produce over 1 million tonnes of HC+NOx and over 50 million tonnes of CO2. The fuel system design and its operating AFR are of key importance with regard to engine operation and engine out emissions. The conventional low-cost float carburettors used in these engines are relatively ineffective at atomising and preparing the fuel for combustion requiring a rich setting for acceptable functional performance. EPA and CARB have confirmed that Phase 3 limits are achievable for a “durable” engine fitted with a conventional well calibrated and manufactured “stock rich setting” float carburettor together with catalytic oxidation after-treatment and passive secondary air injection. The EPA and CARB strategy for meeting Phase 3 only considers the use of conventional float carburettors that operate at rich AFR’s over their entire engine operating range as no other cost effective alternative fuel system is yet available on the market. A cost effective alternative to the conventional carburettor that enabled leaner or optimised AFR operation with load and improved combustion performance would open the door to alternative strategies to meeting the phase 3 limits. This paper presents a completely new form of mechanical carburettor that gives AFR control with load, improved mixture preparation for improved combustion performance and has a lower production cost than conventional carburettors. The conventional and new fuel system designs and operation are discussed in detail and their technical merits demonstrated in the form of engine test data. The performance of different after-treatment systems is also simulated for different AFR profiles with load for a conventional or unmodified SORE engine. With optimised leaner operation and improved combustion characteristics, this new carburettor technology can provide significant engine out CO and HC+NOx reductions on the J1088 test cycle without loss of functional performance. Depending on the chosen emissions control strategy, minimum engine out emissions or optimum engine AFR for oxidation or three-way after-treatment or another, this new carburettor technology can be easily calibrated to provide the desired engine operating AFR profile on the J1088 cycle.
Studies on Some Transition Metal Complexes of Schiff Bases Derived from Quinoxaline-2-carboxaldehyde
Resumo:
Two series of transition metal complexes of Schiff bases derived from quinoxaline-2-carboxaldehyde with semicarbazide (QSC) and furfurylamine (QFA) were synthesised and characterised by elemental analyses, molar conductance and magnetic susceptibility measurements, IR, electronic and EPR spectral studies. The QSC complexes have the general formula [M(QSC)Cl2]. A tetrahedral structure has been assigned for the Mn(II), Co(II) and Ni(II) complexes and a square-planar structure for the Cu(II) complex. The QFA complexes have the formula [M(QFA)2Cl2]. An octahedral structure has been assigned for these complexes. All of the complexes exhibit catalytic activity towards the oxidation of 3,5-di-tert-butylcatechol (DTBC) to 3,5-di-tert-butylquinone (DTBQ) using atmospheric oxygen. The cobalt(II) complex of the ligand QFA was found to be the most active catalyst.

The selective oxidation of alkylaromatics is one of the main processes since the reaction products are important as intermediates in numerous industrial organic chemicals. Side-chain oxidation of alkyl aromatic compounds catalyzed by heterogeneous catalysts using cleaner peroxide oxidants is an especially attractive goal since classical synthetic laboratory procedures preferably use permanganate or acid dichromate as stoichiometric oxidants. In spite of many studies, there are very few which use hydrogen peroxide as a source of oxygen in the C-H activation of alkanes. Eflective utilization of ethylbenzene, available in the xylene stream of the petrochemical industry to more value added products is a promising one in chemical industry. The oxidation products of ethylbenzene are widely employed as intermediates in organic, steroid and resin synthesis.

This Study overviews the basics of TiO2with respect to its structure, properties and applications. A brief account of its structural, electronic and optical properties is provided. Various emerging technological applications utilising TiO2 is also discussed.Till now, exceptionally large number of fundamental studies and application-oriented research and developments has been carried out by many researchers worldwide in TiO2 with its low-dimensional nanomaterial form due to its various novel properties. These nanostructured materials have shown many favourable properties for potential applications, including pollutant photocatalytic decomposition, photovoltaic cells, sensors and so on. This thesis aims to make an in-depth investigation on different linear and nonlinear optical and structural characteristics of different phases of TiO2. Correspondingly, extensive challenges to synthesise different high quality TiO2 nanostructure derivatives such as nanotubes, nanospheres, nanoflowers etc. are continuing. Here, different nanostructures of anatase TiO2 were synthesised and analysed. Morphologically different nanostructures were found to have different impact on their physical and electronic properties such as varied surface area, dissimilar quantum confinement and hence diverged suitability for different applications. In view of the advantages of TiO2, it can act as an excellent matrix for nanoparticle composite films. These composite films may lead to several advantageous functional optical characteristics. Detailed investigations of these kinds of nanocomposites were also performed, only to find that these nanocomposites showed higher adeptness than their parent material. Fine tuning of these parameters helps researchers to achieve high proficiency in their respective applications. These innumerable opportunities aims to encompass the new progress in studies related to TiO2 for an efficient utilization in photo-catalytic or photo-voltaic applications under visible light, accentuate the future trends of TiO2-research in the environment as well as energy related fields serving promising applications benefitting the mankind. The last section of the thesis discusses the applicability of analysed nanomaterials for dye sensitised solar cells followed by future suggestions.

We report the first systematic study on the photocatalytic oxidation of humic acid (HA) in artificial seawater (ASW). TiO2 (Degussa P25) dispersions were used as the catalyst with irradiation from a medium-pressure mercury lamp. The optimum quantity of catalyst was found to be between 2 and 2.5 g l(-1); whiled the decomposition was fastest at low pH values (pH 4.5 in the range examined), and the optimum air-flow, using an immersion well reactor with a capacity of 400 ml, was 850 ml min(-1). Reactivity increased with air-flow up to this figure, above which foaming prevented operation of the reactor. Using pure. oxygen, an optimal flow rate was observed at 300 nil min(-1), above which reactivity remains essentially constant. Following treatment for 1 h, low-salinity water (2700 mg l(-1)) was completely mineralised, whereas ASW (46000 mg l(-1)) had traces of HA remaining. These effects are interpreted and kinetic data presented. To avoid problems of precipitation due to change of ionic strength humic substances were prepared directly in ASW, and the effects of ASW on catalyst suspension and precipitation have been taken into account. The Langmuir-Hinshelwood kinetic model has been shown to be followed only approximately for the catalytic oxidation of HA in ASW. The activation energy for the reaction derived from an Arrhenius treatment was 17 ( +/-0.6) kJ mol(-1). (C) 2003 Elsevier Science Ltd. All rights reserved.

Three new Mn(III) complexes [MnL1(OOCH)(OH2)] (1), [MnL2(OH2)(2)][Mn2L22(NO2)(3)] (2) and [Mn2L21(NO2)(2)] (3) (where H2L1 = H(2)Me(2)Salen = 2,7-bis(2-hydroxyphenyl)-2,6-diazaocta-2,6-diene and H2L2 = H(2)Salpn = 1,7-bis(2-hydroxyphenyl)-2,6-diazahepta-1,6-diene) have been synthesized. X-ray crystal structure analysis reveals that 1 is a mononuclear species whereas 2 contains a mononuclear cationic and a dinuclear nitrite bridged (mu-1 kappa O:2 kappa O') anionic unit. Complex 3 is a phenoxido bridged dimer containing terminally coordinated nitrite. Complexes 1-3 show excellent catecholase-like activity with 3,5-di-tert-butylcatechol (3,5-DTBC) as the substrate. Kinetic measurements suggest that the rate of catechol oxidation follows saturation kinetics with respect to the substrate and first order kinetics with respect to the catalyst. Formation of bis(mu-oxo)dimanganese(III,III) as an intermediate during the course of reaction is identified from ESI-MS spectra. The characteristic six line EPR spectra of complex 2 in the presence of 3,5-DTBC supports the formation of manganese(II)-semiquinonate as an intermediate species during the catalytic oxidation of 3,5-DTBC.

New tetraruthenated manganese (III) porphyrins were synthesized and characterized (P-31 NMR, cyclic voltammetry, UV-Vis). This new system presents four units of cationic ``[RuCl(dppb)(X-bipy)](+)``. The electrochemical and catalytic properties of the central manganese (III) show dependence on the characteristics of the peripheral ruthenium complexes as evidenced by the Mn-(III)/Mn-(II) reduction potential. The catalytic oxidation reactions of olefins, cyclohexene and cyclohexane, were carried out in the presence of tetrapyridyl manganese (III) porphyrins containing cationic ruthenium complex and using iodosylbenzene as oxygen donor. The performance of these new tetraruthenated porphyrins systems were evaluated and compared with the manganese porphyrin. (C) 2007 Elsevier Ltd. All rights reserved.

The present paper describes the utilization of nickel hydroxide modified electrodes toward the catalytic oxidation of carbohydrates (glucose, fructose, lactose and sucrose) and their utilization as electrochemical sensor. The modified electrodes were employed as a detector in flow injection analysis for individual carbohydrate detection, and to an ionic column chromatography system for multi-analyte samples aiming a prior separation step. Kinetic studies were performed on a rotating disk electrode (RDE) in order to determine both the heterogeneous rate constant and number of electrons transferred for each carbohydrate. Many advantages were found for the proposed system including fast and easy handling of the electrode modification, low cost procedure, a wide range of linearity (0.5-50 ppm), low detection limits (ppb level) and high sensitivities. A new electrocatalytic active porphyrin nanocomposite material was obtained by electropolymerization of meso-tetra(4-sulphonatephenyl) porphyrinate manganese(III) complex (MnTPPS) in alkaline solutions containing sub-micromolar concentrations of silver chloride. The modified glassy carbon electrodes efficiently oxidize hydrazine at 10 mV versus Ag/AgCl, dramatically decreasing the overpotential of conventional carbon electrodes. The analytical characteristics of this amperometric sensor coupled with batch injection analysis (BIA) technique were explored. Wide linear dynamic range (2.5 x 10(-7) to 2.5 x 10(-4) mol L-1), good repeatability (R.S.D. = 0.84%, n = 30) and low detection (3.1 x 10(-8) mol L-1) and quantification (1.0 x 10(-7) mol L-1) limits, as well as very fast sampling frequency (60 determinations per hour) were achieved. Biological rhythms are regulated by homeostatic mechanisms that assure that physiological clocks function reliably independent of temperature changes in the environment. Temperature compensation, the independence of the oscillatory period on temperature, is known to play a central role in many biological rhythms, but it is rather rare in chemical oscillators. We study the influence of temperature on the oscillatory dynamics during the catalytic oxidation of formic acid on a polycrystalline platinum electrode. The experiments are performed at five temperatures from 5 to 25 degrees C, and the oscillations are studied under galvanostatic control. Under oscillatory conditions, only non-Arrhenius behavior is observed. Overcompensation with temperature coefficient (q(10), defined as the ratio between the rate constants at temperature T + 10 degrees C and at T) < I is found in most cases, except that temperature compensation with q(10) approximate to I predominates at high applied currents. The behavior of the period and the amplitude result from a complex interplay between temperature and applied current or, equivalently, the distance from thermodynamic equilibrium. High, positive apparent activation energies were obtained under voltammetric, nonoscillatory conditions, which implies that the non-Arrhenius behavior observed under oscillatory conditions results from the interplay among reaction steps rather than, from a weak temperature dependence of the individual steps.

An amperometric oxygen sensor based on a polymeric nickel-salen (salen = N,N'-ethylene bis(salicylideneiminato)) film coated platinum electrode was developed. The sensor was constructed by electropolymerization of nickel-salen complex at platinum electrode in acetonitrile/tetrabutylammonium perchlorate by cyclic voltammetry. The voltammetric behavior of the sensor was investigated in 0.5 mol L-1 KCl solution in the absence and presence of molecular oxygen. Thus, with the addition of oxygen to the solution, the increase of cathodic peak current (at -0.25 V vs. saturated calomel electrode (SCE)) of the modified electrode was observed. This result shows that the nickel-salen film on electrode surface promotes the reduction of oxygen. The reaction can be brought about electrochemically, where the nickel(II) complex is first reduced to a nickel(I) complex at the electrode surface. The nickel(I) complex then undergoes a catalytic oxidation by the molecular oxygen in solution back to the nickel(II) complex, which can then be electrochemically re-reduced to produce an enhancement of the cathodic current. The Tafel plot analyses have been used to elucidate the kinetics and mechanism of the oxygen reduction. A plot of the cathodic current vs. the dissolved oxygen concentration for chronoamperometry (fixed potential = -0.25 V vs. SCE) at the sensor was linear in the 3.95-9.20 mg L-1 concentration range and the concentration limit was 0.17 mg L-1 O-2. The proposed electrode is useful for the quality control and routine analysis of dissolved oxygen in commercial samples and environmental water. The results obtained for the levels of dissolved oxygen are in agreement with the results obtained with a commercial O-2 sensor. (C) 2012 Elsevier B.V. All rights reserved.

An amperometric oxygen sensor based on a polymeric nickel-salen (salen = N,N '-ethylenebis(salicydeneiminato)) film coated platinum electrode was developed. The sensor was constructed by electropolymerization of nickel-salen complex at a platinum electrode in acetonitrile/tetrabuthylamonium perchlorate by cyclic voltammetry. The voltammetric behavior of the modified electrode was investigated in 0.5 mol L-1 KCl solution in the absence and presende of molecular oxygen. A significant increased of cathodic peak current (at -0.20 vs. SCE) of the modified electrode with addition of oxygen to the solution was observed. This result shows that the nickel-salen film on the surface of the electrode promotes the reduction of oxygen. The reaction can be brought about electrochemically where in the nickel(II) complex is first reduced to a nickel(I) complex at the electrode surface. The efficiency of different methods for the decontamination of glassware used for the analysis of dissolved organic carbon (DOC) was tested using reported procedures as well as new ones proposed in this work. A Fenton solution bath (1.0 mmol L-1 Fe2+ and 100 mmol L-1 H2O2) for 1 h or for 30 min employing UV irradiation showed to combine simplicity, low cost and high efficiency. Using the optimized cleaning procedure, the DOC for stored UV-irradiated ultrapure water reached concentrations below the limit of detection (0.19 mu mol C L-1). Filtered (0.7 mu m) rain samples maintained the DOC integrity for at least 7 days when stored at 4 degrees C. The volatile organic carbon (VOC) fraction in the rain samples collected at two sites in São Paulo state (Brazil) ranged from 0% to 56% of their total DOC content. Although these high-VOC concentrations may be derived from the large use of ethanol fuel in Brazil, our results showed that when using the high-temperature catalytic oxidation technique, it is essential to measure DOC rather than non-purgeble organic carbon to estimate organic carbon, since rainwater composition can be quite variable, both geographically and temporally.
