We present a kinetic double layer model coupling aerosol surface and bulk chemistry (K2-SUB) based on the PRA framework of gas-particle interactions (Poschl-Rudich-Ammann, 2007). K2-SUB is applied to a popular model system of atmospheric heterogeneous chemistry: the interaction of ozone with oleic acid. We show that our modelling approach allows de-convoluting surface and bulk processes, which has been a controversial topic and remains an important challenge for the understanding and description of atmospheric aerosol transformation. In particular, we demonstrate how a detailed treatment of adsorption and reaction at the surface can be coupled to a description of bulk reaction and transport that is consistent with traditional resistor model formulations. From literature data we have derived a consistent set of kinetic parameters that characterise mass transport and chemical reaction of ozone at the surface and in the bulk of oleic acid droplets. Due to the wide range of rate coefficients reported from different experimental studies, the exact proportions between surface and bulk reaction rates remain uncertain. Nevertheless, the model results suggest an important role of chemical reaction in the bulk and an approximate upper limit of similar to 10(-11) cm(2) s(-1) for the surface reaction rate coefficient. Sensitivity studies show that the surface accommodation coefficient of the gas-phase reactant has a strong non-linear influence on both surface and bulk chemical reactions. We suggest that K2-SUB may be used to design, interpret and analyse future experiments for better discrimination between surface and bulk processes in the oleic acid-ozone system as well as in other heterogeneous reaction systems of atmospheric relevance.

The research explores the mechanisms in the formation and consolidation of a new regime which combines democratic and authoritarian features; it has emerged as result of democratization processes affecting different world areas in recent years. The study analyses a case of great international significance, post-communist Russia: here internal factors strongly prevail in front of the external variables of democratic imitation and contagion, thus showing to what extent Russia differs from other political contexts. The study intends to examine the strategies used by this regime to solve internal conflicts and become stable in spite of the democratizing pressures coming from outside. Indeed, the literature about political transformations has shown the problems in analyzing these polities together with the need to examine their peculiarities more in depth. In this perspective, the first section focuses on the dynamics of State-building in Russia as a fundamental process in tracing the specific characteristics of the current regime: particularly, it is suggested that the State dimension comes out as crucial in determining the level of political and social pluralism accepted in post-Soviet Russia. This argument is worked out in the second section, which analyses the main mechanisms used by the incumbents to limit and control pluralism within the two arenas of political competition and civil society, from where the major threats to the status quo are supposed to come. The main hypothesis is that the leadership interventions in these spheres during the last ten years have shaped a regime which can be characterized as a new type of authoritarianism: with respect to traditional authoritarian forms a certain degree of political contestation is accepted, visible in the presence of a multiparty system, semi-competitive elections and of the several representatives of civil society. Yet, this diversity is curbed basically in two different ways: from one hand the incumbents provide support to political and social actors who sponsor government politics (see the party of power and pro-Kremlin movements). From the other they use some non coercive forms of control and restriction (in legislation, in political elections) against those actors who promote values and priorities opposed to the official ones.

The topic of my Ph.D. thesis is the finite element modeling of coseismic deformation imaged by DInSAR and GPS data. I developed a method to calculate synthetic Green functions with finite element models (FEMs) and then use linear inversion methods to determine the slip distribution on the fault plane. The method is applied to the 2009 L’Aquila Earthquake (Italy) and to the 2008 Wenchuan earthquake (China). I focus on the influence of rheological features of the earth's crust by implementing seismic tomographic data and the influence of topography by implementing Digital Elevation Models (DEM) layers on the FEMs. Results for the L’Aquila earthquake highlight the non-negligible influence of the medium structure: homogeneous and heterogeneous models show discrepancies up to 20% in the fault slip distribution values. Furthermore, in the heterogeneous models a new area of slip appears above the hypocenter. Regarding the 2008 Wenchuan earthquake, the very steep topographic relief of Longmen Shan Range is implemented in my FE model. A large number of DEM layers corresponding to East China is used to achieve the complete coverage of the FE model. My objective was to explore the influence of the topography on the retrieved coseismic slip distribution. The inversion results reveals significant differences between the flat and topographic model. Thus, the flat models frequently adopted are inappropriate to represent the earth surface topographic features and especially in the case of the 2008 Wenchuan earthquake.

Humans possess a highly developed sensitivity for facial features. This sensitivity is also deployed to non-human beings and inanimate objects such as cars. In the present study we aimed to investigate whether car design has a bearing on the behaviour of pedestrians. Methods: An immersive virtual reality environment with a zebra crossing was used to determine a) whether the minimum accepted distance for crossing the street is bigger for cars with dominant appearance than for cars with friendly appearance (Block 1) and b) whether the speed of dominant cars are overestimated compared to friendly cars (Block 2). In Block 1, the participant's task was to cross the road in front of an approaching car at the latest moment. The point of time when entering and leaving the street was measured. In Block 2 they were asked to estimate the speed of each passing car. An independent sample rated dominant cars as being more dominant, angry and hostile than friendly cars. Results: None of the predictions regarding the car design was confirmed. Instead, there was an effect of starting position: From the centre island, participants entered the road significantly later (smaller accepted distance) and left the road later than when starting from the pavement. Consistently, the speed of the cars was estimated significantly lower when standing on the centre island compared to the pavement. When entering the visual size of the cars as factor (instead of dominance), we found that participants started to cross the road significantly later in front of small cars compared to big cars and that the speed of smaller cars was overestimated compared to big cars (size-speed bias). Conclusions: Car size and starting position, not car design seem to have an influence on road crossing behaviour.

This study was an exploratory investigation of variables which are associated with neonatal intensive care nurses' perceptions of and participation in life-sustaining treatment decisions for critically ill newborns. The primary purpose of the research was to examine the extent to which assessment of infants' physical and mental prognoses, parents' preferences regarding treatment, and legal consequences of non-treatment influence nurses' recommendations about life-saving treatment decisions for handicapped newborns. Secondly, the research explored the extent and nature of nurses' reported participation in the resolution of treatment dilemmas for these critically ill newborns. The framework of the study draws upon the work of Crane (1977), Blum (1980), and Pearlman (1982) who have explored the sociological context of decision-making with critical care patients.^ Participants in the study were a volunteer sample of eighty-three registered nurses who were currently working in neonatal intensive care units in five large urban hospitals in Texas. Data were collected through the use of intensive interviews and case study questionnaires. Results from the study indicate that physical and mental prognoses as well as parent preferences and concerns about legal liability are related to nurses' treatment recommendations, but their levels of significance vary according to the type of handicapping condition and whether the treatment questions are posed in terms of initiating aggressive therapy or withdrawing aggressive therapy.^ The majority of nurses reported that the extent of their participation in formal decision-making regarding handicapped newborns was fairly minimal although they provide much of the definitive data used to make decisions by physicians and parents. There was substantial evidence that nurse respondents perceive their primary role as advocates for critically ill newborns, and believe that their involvement in the resolution of treatment dilemmas should be increased. ^

ABSTRACT Advances in hardware allow to collect huge volumes of data emerging applications that must provide information in near-real time, e.g., patient monitoring, health monitoring of water pipes, etc. The data streaming model emerges to comply with these applications overcoming the traditional store-then-process model. With the store-then-process model, data is stored before being consulted; while, in streaming, data are processed on the fly producing continuous responses. The challenges of streaming for processing data on the fly are the following: 1) responses must be produced continuously whenever new data arrives in the system; 2) data is accessed only once and is generally not maintained in its entirety, and 3) data processing time to produce a response should be low. Two models exist to compute continuous responses: the evolving model and the sliding window model; the latter fits best with applications must be computed over the most recently data rather than all the previous data. In recent years, research in the context of data stream mining has focused mainly on the evolving model. In the sliding window model, the work presented is smaller since these algorithms must be incremental and they must delete the information which expires when the window slides. Clustering is one of the fundamental techniques of data mining and is used to analyze data sets in order to find representative groups that provide a concise description of the data being processed. Clustering is critical in applications such as network intrusion detection or customer segmentation in marketing and advertising. Due to the huge amount of data that must be processed by such applications (up to millions of events per second), centralized solutions are usually unable to cope with timing restrictions and recur to shedding techniques where data is discarded during load peaks. To avoid discarding of data, processing of streams (such as clustering) must be distributed and adapted to environments where information is distributed. In streaming, research does not only focus on designing for general tasks, such as clustering, but also in finding new approaches that fit bests with particular scenarios. As an example, an ad-hoc grouping mechanism turns out to be more adequate than k-means for defense against Distributed Denial of Service (DDoS). This thesis contributes to the data stream mining clustering technique both for centralized and distributed environments. We present a centralized clustering algorithm showing capabilities to discover clusters of high quality in low time and we provide a comparison with existing state of the art solutions. We have worked on a data structure that significantly reduces memory requirements while controlling the error of the clusters statistics. We also provide two distributed clustering protocols. We focus on the analysis of two key features: the impact on the clustering quality when computation is distributed and the requirements for reducing the processing time compared to the centralized solution. Finally, with respect to ad-hoc grouping techniques, we have developed a DDoS detection framework based on clustering. We have characterized the attacks detected and we have evaluated the efficiency and effectiveness of mitigating the attack impact.

ABSTRACT Currently, various earthquakes have made clear first, the importance of city planning and secondly, the great influence that has the behaviour of buildings as a consequence of the results of human and economic losses. Faced with the impossibility of avoiding the occurrence of earthquakes and predicting its with a small margin of time to take action in the short term, the reduction of the vulnerability of exposed elements is the most effective measure to prevent damage and to prevent the disaster. There are several previous studies, Norman B. Green (1980), Teresa Guevara López (2009-2012) collecting criteria already widespread within the seismic bibliography and we can find some aspects from standard seismic precursor in this field (for example, the Peruvian) to initially establish urban - seismic principles. In addition, several projects related to seismic risk, RisK-EU (2003), SERAMAR (Lars Abrahamczyk et al., 2013) have developed methodologies that classify the vulnerability of buildings taking into account modifiers for behaviours and irregular configurations in seismical terms. This paper develops an empirical methodology to identify and characterize the irregular urban parameters seismically, graduate its relationship with the building damages after an earthquake and thus reduce the seismic vulnerability of cities. The methodology developed in this thesis applies in the city of Lorca, Region of Murcia. Fieldwork where buildings are classified according to their structural type and its urban performance parameters. Through a statistical study the correlation with damage of buildings is analyzed after the earthquake of May 11, 2011. Previously a classification of the buildings has been made according to the kind of soil according to the Eurocodigo 8 (Navarro et al, 2012). Finally, you get an estimate of the building habitability in Lorca. As a result, this classification adopted the criterion contained in various international recommendations, most of which are based on the documentation published by the ATC - Applied Technology Council, habitable buildings (not damage -damage non-structural) and non habitable buildings (structural damage).
