A novel amphiphilic biodegradable triblock copolymer (PGL-PLA-PGL) with polylactide (PLA) as hydrophobic middle block and poly(glutamic acid) (PGL) as hydrophilic lateral blocks was successfully synthesized by ring-opening polymerization (ROP) Of L-lactide (LA) and N-carboxy anhydride (NCA) consecutively and by subsequent catalytic hydrogenation. The results of cell experiment of PGL-PLA-PGL suggested that PGL could improve biocompatibility of polyester obviously. The copolymer could form micelles of spindly shape easily in aqueous solution. The pendant carboxyl groups of the triblock copolymer were further activated with N-hydroxysuccinimide and combined with a cell-adhesive peptide GRGI)SY Incorporation of the oligopeptide further enhanced the hydrophilicity and led to formation of spherical micelles. PGL-PLAPGL showed better cell adhesion and spreading ability than pure PLA and the GRGDSY-containing copolymer exhibited even further improvement in cell adhesion and spreading ability, indicating that the copolymer could find a promising application in drug delivery or tissue engineering.

An electroactive triblock copolymer of poly(ethylene glycol) (PEG) and aniline pentamer (AP), PEG-block-AP-block-PEG (PAP), was synthesized via polycondensation in the presence of N,N'-dicyclohexylcarbodiimide (DCC). The UV-vis spectra and cyclic-voltammograms (CV) spectra exhibited an excellent electroactivity of the triblock copolymer. The amphiphilic triblock copolymer self-assembles spontaneously into uniform micellar aggregates when the triblock copolymer was added directly to the aqueous solution. The size of the aggregates can be changed with the oxidation state of the AP segment in the PAP copolymer and the aggregates were pH-sensitive to the surrounding water solution, which provides a potential application in controlled drug release.

A series of biodegradable polyurethanes (PUs) are synthesized from the copolymer diols prepared from L-lactide and epsilon-caprolactone (CL), 2,4-toluene diisocyanate, and 1,4-butanediol. Their thermal and mechanical properties are characterized via FTIR, DSC, and tensile tests. Their T(g)s are in the range of 28-53 degrees C. They have high modulus, tensile strength, and elongation ratio at break. With increasing CL content, the PU changes from semicrystalline to completely amorphous. Thermal mechanical analysis is used to determine their shape-memory property. When they are deformed and fixed at proper temperatures, their shape-recovery is almost complete for a tensile elongation of 150% or a compression of 2-folds. By changing the content of CL and the hard-to-soft ratio, their T(g)s and their shape-recovery temperature can be adjusted. Therefore, they may find wide applications.

A novel biodegradable triblock copolymer poly(ethylene glycol)-b-poly(L-lactide)-b-poly(L-lysine) (PEG-PLA-PLL) was synthesized by acidolysis of poly(ethylene glycol)-b-poly(L-lactide)-b-poly(F-benzyloxycarbonyl-L-lysine) (PEG-PLA-PZLL) obtained by the ring-opening polymerization (ROP) of epsilon-benzyloxycarbonyl-L-lysine N-carboxyanhydride (ZLys NCA) with amino-terminated PEG-PLA-NH2 as a macro-initiator, and the pendant amino groups of the lysine residues were modified with a peptide known to modulate cellular functions, Gly-Arg-Gly-Asp-Ser-Tyr (GRGDSY, abbreviated as RGD) in the presence of 1,1'-carbonyldiimidazole (CDI). The structures of PEG-PLA-PLL/RGD and its precursors were confirmed by H-1 NMR, FT-IR, amino acid analysis and XPS analysis. The cell adhesion and cell spread on the PEG-PLA-PLL/RGD film were enhanced compared to those on pure PLA film. Therefore, the novel RGD-grafted triblock copolymer is promising for cell or tissue engineering applications. Both copolymers PEG-PLA-PZLL and PEG-PLA-PLL showed an amphiphilic nature and could self-assemble into micelles of homogeneous spherical morphology. The micelles were determined by fluorescence technique, dynamic light scattering (DLS), and field emission scanning electron microscopy (ESEM) and could be expected to find application in drug and gene delivery systems.

A triblock copolymer PLA-b-AP-b-PLA (PAP) of polylactide (PLA) and aniline pentamer (AP) with the unique properties of being both electroactive and biodegradable is synthesized by coupling an electroactive carboxyl-capped AP with two biodegradable bihydroxyl-capped PLAs via a condensation reaction. Three different molecule weight PAP copolymers are prepared. The PAP copolymers exhibit excellent electroactivity similar to the AP and polyaniline, which may stimulate cell proliferation and differentiation. The electrical conductivity of the PAP2 copolymer film (similar to 5 x 10(-6) S/cm) is in the semiconducting region. Transmission electron microscopic results suggest that there is microphase separation of the two block segments in the copolymer, which might contribute to the observed conductivity. The biodegradation and biocompatibility experiments in vitro prove the copolymer is biodegradable and biocompatible. Moreover, these new block copolymer shows good solubility in common organic solvents, leading to the system with excellent processibility. These biodegradable PAP copolymers with electroactive function thus possess the properties that would be potentially used as scaffold materials for neuronal or cardiovascular tissue engineering.

We have studied the lamellar orientation in thin films of a model diblock copolymer, symmetric poly(styrene)-b-poly(L-lactide) (PS-PLLA), in the melt state on supported silicon wafer surface. In this system, while the PLLA block prefers to wet the polymer/substrate interface, the polymer/air as well as polymer/polymer interface is neutral for both blocks due to the similar surface energies of PS and PLLA in melt state. Our results demonstrate that the interplay of the interfaces during phase separation results in a series of structures before approaching the equilibrium state. Lamellar orientation of thin films with different initial film thicknesses at different annealing stages has been investigated using atomic force microscopy (AFM), transmission electronic microscopy (TEM), and X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy (XPS). It is found that in the early stage (annealing time t < 10 min), the polymer/substrate interface dominates the structure evolution, leading to a parallel lamellar structure with holes or islands formed depending on the initial film thickness. Later on, the neutral air interface becomes important and leads to a transition of lamellar orientation from parallel to perpendicular. It is interesting to see that for films with thickness h > 2L, where L is the bulk lamellar period, the lamellar orientation transition can occur independently in different parallel lamellar domains due to the neutrality of polymer/polymer interface.

The crystallization behavior of crystalline-crystalline diblock copolymer containing poly(ethylene oxide) (PEO) and poly(epsilon-caprolactone) (PCL), in which the weight fraction of PCL is 0.815, has been studied via differential scanning calorimeter (DSC), wide-angle X-ray diffraction (WAXD), and polarized optical microscopy (POM). DSC and WAXD indicated that both PEO and PCL blocks crystallize in the block copolymer. POM revealed a ring-banded spherulite morphology or the PEO-b-PCL diblock copolymer.

Self-assembly thin films of symmetric triblock copolymer after annealing and quenching were examined by an effective Monte Carlo simulation method. The defects in the ordered lamellae of the thin films after quenching, which were dependent on the initialization of copolymer melts, are removed in the thin films after annealing. The mean-square gyration radius and end-to-end distance of copolymer chains in the thin films after annealing are smaller than those in the thin films after quenching because of the complete relaxation of polymer during annealing. We also find that the density of A block in the region near to the surface is higher than that in the interior of the thin films. As a result, it is different from the thin films of symmetric A(n)B(n) diblock copolymer, in which surface ordering forms before the interior, that ordering phenomena occurs first in the interior region in the thin films of symmetric A(n)B(m)A(n). triblocl copolymer.

The gelation of physically associating triblock copolymers in a good solvent was investigated by means of the Monte Carlo simulation and a gelation process based on the conformation transition of the copolymer that was described in detail. In our simulative system, it has been found that the gelation is closely related with chain conformations, and there exist four types of chains defined as free, dangling, loop, and bridge conformations. The copolymer chains with different conformations contribute to the formation of gel in different ways. We proposed a conformational transition model, by which we evaluated the role of these four types of chains in sol-gel transition. It was concluded that the free chains keeping the conformation transition equilibrium and the dangling conformation being the hinge of conformation transition, while the chain with loop conformation enlarges the size of the congeries and the chain with bridge conformations binds the congeries consisted of the copolymer chains. In addition, the effects of temperature and concentration on the physical gelation, the association of the copolymer congeries, and the copolymer chain conformations' distribution were discussed.

We have investigated systematically the morphology of thin films spin-coated from solutions of a semicrystalline diblock copolymer, poly(L-lactic acid)-block-polystyrene (PLLA-b-PS), in solvents with varying selectivity. In neutral solvents (chloroform and tetrahydrofuran (THF)), a spinodal-like pattern was obtained and the pattern boundary was sharpened by diluting the solution. Meanwhile, loose spherical associates, together with larger aggregates composed of these associates by unimer bridges, formed partly due to crystallization of the PLLA blocks in relatively concentrated solutions. In slightly PS-selective solvent (e.g., benzene), both loose and compact spherical micelles were obtained, depending on the polymer concentration, coexisting with unimers. When enhancing the selectivity with mixed solvents, for example, mixing the neutral solvent and the slightly selective solvent with a highly PS-selective solvent, CS2, loose assemblies (nanorods in CS2/THF mixtures and polydisperse aggregates in CS2/benzene mixtures) and well-developed lamellar micelles were obtained.

We have investigated the hole nucleation and growth induced by crystallization of thin crystalline-coil diblock copolymer films. Semicrystalline rodlike assemblies from neutral/selective binary solvent are used as seeds to nucleate crystallization at temperatures above the glass transition temperature (T-g) but below melting point (T-m). The crystallization of nanorods drives neighboring copolymer chains to diffuse into the growing nanorods. Depletion of copolymer chains yields hole nucleation and growth at the edge of the nanorods. Simultaneously, the polymer chains unassociated into the nanorods were oriented by induction from the free surface and the substrate, leading to limitation of the hole depth to the lamellar spacing, similar to20 nm. The holes, as well as the nanorods, grow as t(alpha), where t is the annealing time and a crossover in the exponent a. is found. The orientation and stretching of the copolymer chains by the surface and interface are believed to accelerate the crystallization, and in turn, the latter accelerates the growth rate of the holes. At T > T-m, the grains melt and the copolymer chains relax and flow into the first layer of the film.

We have followed the time development of the microdomain structure in symmetric diblock copolymer poly(styrene-b-methyl methacrylate), P(S-b-MMA), ultrathin films via PMMA-selective solvent vapor treatment by atomic force microscopy (AFM). After preparation on a substrate preferentially attracting the PMMA block, PS forms a continuous layer at a film's free surface. With subsequent solvent vapor treatment, the film gradually shows a well-ordered hexagonally packed nanocylinders structure. It is shown that only when the film thickness is less than the 1/2L(0) (lamellar repeat spacing), and exposed to PMMA block selective solvent for an appropriate time, can the well-ordered hexagonally packed nanocylinders form. On an extended solvent vapor treatment, a mixed morphology containing nanocylinders and stripes appears, followed by the striped morphologies. When the annealing time is long enough, the film comes back to the flat surface again, however, with PMMA instead of PS dominating the free surface.

Binary symmetric diblock copolymer blends, that is, low-molecular-weight poly(styrene-block-methyl methacrylate) (PS-b-PMMA) and high-molecular-weight poly(styrene-block-methacrylate) (PS-b-PMA), self-assemble on silicon substrates to form structures with highly ordered nanoholes in thin films. As a result of the chemically similar structure of the PMA and the PMMA block, the PMMA chain penetrates through the large PMA block that absorbs preferentially on the polar silicon substrate. This results in the formation of nanoholes in the PS continuous matrix.

Previously, an inverted phase (the minority blocks comprising the continuum phase) was found in solution-cast block copolymer thin films. In this study, the effect of casting solvents on the formation of inverted phase has been studied. Two block copolymers, poly(styrene-b-butadiene) (SB) (M-w = 73 930 Da) and poly(styrene-b-butadiene-b-styrene) (SBS) (M-w = 140 000 Da), with comparable block lengths and equal polystyrene (PS) weight fraction (similar to30 wt %) were used. The copolymer thin films were cast from different solvents, toluene, benzene, cyclohexane, and binary mixtures of benzene and cyclohexane. Toluene and benzene are good solvents for both PS and PB, but have a preferential affinity for PS, while cyclohexane is a good solvent for PB but a Theta solvent for PS (T-Theta = 34.5 degreesC). The differential solvent affinity for PS and PB was estimated in terms of a difference between the polymer-solvent interaction parameter, chi, for each block. Under an extremely slow solvent evaporation rate, the time-dependent phase behavior during such a solution-to-film process was examined by freeze-drying the samples at different stages, corresponding to different copolymer concentrations, rho.
