Amplified Fragment Length Polymorphism (AFLP) was used to establish the genetic relationships among 20 species from seven of the nine sections of genus Arachis. The level of polymorphism among nine accessions of the cultivated peanut, A. hypogaea L., was also evaluated. Three combinations of primers were used to amplify the AFLPs. The fragments were separated in 6% denaturing acrylamide gels. A total of 408 fragments were analyzed. An average of 135.3 fragments per primer combination were scored, and the largest number of fragments was 169 using primer combination Eco RI - ACC / Mse I - CTG, while the lowest was 108, with Eco RI - ACT / Mse I - CTT. In general, the genetic relationships established using AFLPs agreed with the classification established using morphology and crossability data. The results indicated that AFLPs are good markers for establishing the relationships among Arachis species. The polymorphism detected in A. hypogaea by this method was higher than the one found with other markers, like RAPDs and RFLPs. However, our data suggest that the polymorphism detected be using AFLP with only three primer combinations is still too low to be used for any kind of genetic study in this species.

The anodic behaviour of cast Ti-Mo alloys, having different Mo contents (6-20 wt.%), was investigated in acidic and neutral aerated aqueous solutions. All sample showed a valve-metal behaviour, owing to formation and thickening of barrier-type anodic oxides displaying interference colours Growth kinetics. of passive films is influenced by both anodizing electrolyte and composition of the starting alloy. This last parameter was found to change also the solid-state properties of the films, explored by photoelectrochemical and impedance spectroscopy experiments. Thicker films (U(f) = 8 V/MSE) grown on alloys richer in Mo showed more resistive character and a photocurrent sign inversion under negative bias, that revealed an insulating character, whereas corresponding films grown on alloys with lower Mo content, as well as thinner films, behaved as n-type semiconductors. Results are discussed in terms of formation of a mixed Ti-Mo oxide phase. (C) 2008 Elsevier Ltd. All rights reserved

Apresenta-se nesta dissertação a proposta de um algoritmo supervisionado de classificação de imagens de sensoreamento remoto, composto de três etapas: remoção ou suavização de nuvens, segmentação e classificação.O método de remoção de nuvens usa filtragem homomórfica para tratar as obstruções causadas pela presença de nuvens suaves e o método Inpainting para remover ou suavizar a preseça de sombras e nuvens densas. Para as etapas de segmentação e classificação é proposto um método baseado na energia AC dos coeficientes da Transformada Cosseno Discreta (DCT). O modo de classificação adotado é do tipo supervisionado. Para avaliar o algioritmo foi usado um banco de 14 imagens captadas por vários sensores, das quais 12 possuem algum tipo de obstrução. Para avaliar a etapa de remoção ou suavização de nuvens e sombras são usados a razão sinal-ruído de pico (PSNR) e o coeficiente Kappa. Nessa fase, vários filtros passa-altas foram comparados para a escolha do mais eficiente. A segmentação das imagens é avaliada pelo método da coincidência entre bordas (EBC) e a classificação é avaliada pela medida da entropia relativa e do erro médio quadrático (MSE). Tão importante quanto as métricas, as imagens resultantes são apresentadas de forma a permitir a avaliação subjetiva por comparação visual. Os resultados mostram a eficiência do algoritmo proposto, principalmente quando comparado ao software Spring, distribuído pelo Instituto Nacional de Pesquisas Espaciais (INPE).

O conhecimento prévio do valor da carga é de extrema importância para o planejamento e operação dos sistemas de energia elétrica. Este trabalho apresenta os resultados de um estudo investigativo da aplicação de Redes Neurais Artificiais do tipo Perceptron Multicamadas com treinamento baseado na Teoria da Informação para o problema de Previsão de Carga a curto prazo. A aprendizagem baseada na Teoria da Informação se concentra na utilização da quantidade de informação (Entropia) para treinamento de uma rede neural artificial. Dois modelos previsores são apresentados sendo que os mesmos foram desenvolvidos a partir de dados reais fornecidos por uma concessionária de energia. Para comparação e verificação da eficiência dos modelos propostos um terceiro modelo foi também desenvolvido utilizando uma rede neural com treinamento baseado no critério clássico do erro médio quadrático. Os resultados alcançados mostraram a eficiência dos sistemas propostos, que obtiveram melhores resultados de previsão quando comparados ao sistema de previsão baseado na rede treinada pelo critério do MSE e aos sistemas previsores já apresentados na literatura.

Introduction: The use of stabilizer bracelet is a frequent treatment for movement disorders to strengthen muscles and adjust coordination. Still questions remain regarding the benefi t of using loads to decrease involuntary movements and the best load and placement. Objective: To measure the infl uence of the stabilizer bracelet on the kinematics and spatiotemporal parameters in planar movements performed by the upper limb. Method: One child, who has the spastic diplegy type of cerebral palsy with choreoathetoid component, and a control child without cerebral palsy, both female and 7 years old, were subjected to analysis of movements in relation to displacement, velocity, linear acceleration, and the calculation of mean square error (MSE) with and without use of stabilizer bracelet with loads of 25, 50, and 75% of the supported maximum load. Results: After comparing data between subjects, a difference was found between patient and control in all situations and variables. An inter-individual comparison using 25% of the maximum load showed the smallest difference with the NDE. Discussion and Conclusion: This therapeutic option is low cost, easy to apply, and does not signifi cantly interfere in the aesthetic of the individual. Therefore, physiotherapists may prescribe this for activities that require greater control of the upper limb because for the case studied the upper limb movement was more effi cient with the use of the stabilizer bracelet.

This paper presents a material demand forecasting to executive aircrafts modifications, the objective was to determinate a cadence of kits of materials in order reduce over stock, but also keeping the customer quality support. This work was motivated by the strong tendency that the market has to cut costs, especially those that do not add value to the product, waste. To solve the problem the Poisson probability distribution was used and also the error measures MPE, MAPE and MSE. At the end, after some adjustments, we found a satisfactory model for the problem

Antitumor activities have been described in selol, a hydrophobic mixture of molecules containing selenium in their structure, and also in maghemite magnetic nanoparticles (MNPs). Both selol and MNPs were co-encapsulated within poly(lactic-co-glycolic acid) (PLGA) nanocapsules for therapeutic purposes. The PLGA-nanocapsules loaded with MNPs and selol were labeled MSE-NC and characterized by transmission and scanning electron microscopy, electrophoretic mobility, photon correlation spectroscopy, presenting a monodisperse profile, and positive charge. The antitumor effect of MSE-NC was evaluated using normal (MCF-10A) and neoplastic (4T1 and MCF-7) breast cell lines. Nanocapsules containing only MNPs or selol were used as control. MTT assay showed that the cytotoxicity induced by MSE-NC was dose and time dependent. Normal cells were less affected than tumor cells. Cell death occurred mainly by apoptosis. Further exposure of MSE-NC treated neoplastic breast cells to an alternating magnetic field increased the antitumor effect of MSE-NC. It was concluded that selol-loaded magnetic PLGA-nanocapsules (MSE-NC) represent an effective magnetic material platform to promote magnetohyperthermia and thus a potential system for antitumor therapy.

This thesis deal with the design of advanced OFDM systems. Both waveform and receiver design have been treated. The main scope of the Thesis is to study, create, and propose, ideas and novel design solutions able to cope with the weaknesses and crucial aspects of modern OFDM systems. Starting from the the transmitter side, the problem represented by low resilience to non-linear distortion has been assessed. A novel technique that considerably reduces the Peak-to-Average Power Ratio (PAPR) yielding a quasi constant signal envelope in the time domain (PAPR close to 1 dB) has been proposed.The proposed technique, named Rotation Invariant Subcarrier Mapping (RISM),is a novel scheme for subcarriers data mapping,where the symbols belonging to the modulation alphabet are not anchored, but maintain some degrees of freedom. In other words, a bit tuple is not mapped on a single point, rather it is mapped onto a geometrical locus, which is totally or partially rotation invariant. The final positions of the transmitted complex symbols are chosen by an iterative optimization process in order to minimize the PAPR of the resulting OFDM symbol. Numerical results confirm that RISM makes OFDM usable even in severe non-linear channels. Another well known problem which has been tackled is the vulnerability to synchronization errors. Indeed in OFDM system an accurate recovery of carrier frequency and symbol timing is crucial for the proper demodulation of the received packets. In general, timing and frequency synchronization is performed in two separate phases called PRE-FFT and POST-FFT synchronization. Regarding the PRE-FFT phase, a novel joint symbol timing and carrier frequency synchronization algorithm has been presented. The proposed algorithm is characterized by a very low hardware complexity, and, at the same time, it guarantees very good performance in in both AWGN and multipath channels. Regarding the POST-FFT phase, a novel approach for both pilot structure and receiver design has been presented. In particular, a novel pilot pattern has been introduced in order to minimize the occurrence of overlaps between two pattern shifted replicas. This allows to replace conventional pilots with nulls in the frequency domain, introducing the so called Silent Pilots. As a result, the optimal receiver turns out to be very robust against severe Rayleigh fading multipath and characterized by low complexity. Performance of this approach has been analytically and numerically evaluated. Comparing the proposed approach with state of the art alternatives, in both AWGN and multipath fading channels, considerable performance improvements have been obtained. The crucial problem of channel estimation has been thoroughly investigated, with particular emphasis on the decimation of the Channel Impulse Response (CIR) through the selection of the Most Significant Samples (MSSs). In this contest our contribution is twofold, from the theoretical side, we derived lower bounds on the estimation mean-square error (MSE) performance for any MSS selection strategy,from the receiver design we proposed novel MSS selection strategies which have been shown to approach these MSE lower bounds, and outperformed the state-of-the-art alternatives. Finally, the possibility of using of Single Carrier Frequency Division Multiple Access (SC-FDMA) in the Broadband Satellite Return Channel has been assessed. Notably, SC-FDMA is able to improve the physical layer spectral efficiency with respect to single carrier systems, which have been used so far in the Return Channel Satellite (RCS) standards. However, it requires a strict synchronization and it is also sensitive to phase noise of local radio frequency oscillators. For this reason, an effective pilot tone arrangement within the SC-FDMA frame, and a novel Joint Multi-User (JMU) estimation method for the SC-FDMA, has been proposed. As shown by numerical results, the proposed scheme manages to satisfy strict synchronization requirements and to guarantee a proper demodulation of the received signal.

Il rischio di caduta durante la deambulazione aumenta con l'età; le cadute comportano costi elevati per l’assistenza sanitaria ed hanno un influenza critica sullo stato di salute dell'anziano. La valutazione della stabilità del cammino rappresenta un aspetto fondamentale per la definizione di un indice del rischio di caduta. Diverse misure di variabilità e stabilità del cammino sono state proposte in letteratura con l'obiettivo di ottenere una standardizzazione metodologica e risultati affidabili, ripetibili e facilmente interpretabili. Queste misure andrebbero ad integrare, o sostituire, le scale cliniche, unico metodo attualmente in uso ma la cui affidabilità è limitata in quanto fortemente dipendente dall’operatore. Il fine ultimo è quello di definire un indice del rischio di caduta specifico per il soggetto. Gli obiettivi della tesi comprendono la valutazione della ripetibilità in dipendenza dalla lunghezza del trial di una serie di misure di variabilità e stabilità applicate al cammino di soggetti anziani, la valutazione della correlazione fra queste misure di variabilità e stabilità e il risultato delle scale cliniche e la valutazione della correlazione fra queste misure di variabilità e stabilità e la storia di caduta dei soggetti. Per fare questo si sono somministrati alcuni questionari e schede di valutazione funzionale (CIRS, Barthel, Mini-BESTest) a 70 soggetti di età superiore a 65 anni. Questi hanno eseguito inoltre una camminata lungo un tratto rettilineo di circa 100 m di lunghezza; il relativo segnale accelerometrico è stato registrato mediante sensori inerziali. Il risultato generale ottenuto è che alcune misure di stabilità come la MSE e la RQA, già in passato risultate legate alla storia di cadute, mostrano promettenti performance per la definizione del rischio di caduta.
