Letters that construct limits: intellectual and political projects in the letters of Capistrano de Abreu to Barao do Rio Branco (1886-1903)

The intention of this paper is to analyze the letters from Capistrano de Abreu to Barao do Rio Branco in the years between 1886 and 1903. The focus will be given to the divergences around the notion of territorial formation, a basic concept for these authors who were thinking about the construction of a historical narrative at the end of the 19(th) and beginning of the 20(th) century. Later, the question is the construction of the craft of the historian in the letters of Capistrano de Abreu and his distinction and proximity to the ideas of the Barao do Rio Branco.

Onset of the Henry constant for supercritical adsorption into carbonaceous porous materials

The Henry constant is commonly used as a measure of how strong an adsorbate is attracted towards a solid surface and is regarded as one of the fundamental parameters in adsorption studies. Having a sound basis in thermodynamics, the Henry Law is often used as a criterion to evaluate the validity of adsorption isotherm equations. However, the application of the Henry Law for microporous materials, especially microporous activated carbon, remains questionable. It is the aim of this paper to examine the Henry Law behavior of supercritical adsorbates in carbonaceous pores of different sizes, and to define the conditions for the Henry Law to be applicable for carbonaceous adsorbents.

Transpecific microsatellites for hard pines M. Shepherd, M. Cross, T. Maguire, M. Dieters, C. Williams, R. Henry

Microsatellites are difficult to recover from large plant genomes so cross-specific utilisation is an important source of markers. Fifty micro satellites were tested for cross-specific amplification and polymorphism to two New World hard pine species, slash pine (Pinus elliottii var. elliottii) and Caribbean pine (R caribaea var. hondurensis). Twenty-nine (58%) markers amplified in both hard pine species, and 23 of these 29 were polymorphic. Soft pine (subgenus Strobus) microsatellite markers did amplify, but none were polymorphic. Pinus elliottii var. elliottii and R caribaea var. hondurensis showed mutational changes in the flanking regions and the repeat motif that were informative for Pinus spp. phylogenetic relationships. Most allele length variation could be attributed to variability in repeat unit number. There was no evidence for ascertainment bias.

Sôbre o encontro de Lutzomyia longipalpis (Lutz & Neiva, 1912) no Estado de São Paulo, Brasil

Relata-se o encontro de Lutzomyia longipalpis na localidade denominada Bairro do Arado, município de Salto de Pirapora, Estado de São Paulo, Brasil. Trata-se do primeiro registro concreto da presença dessa espécie em território paulista. Sugere-se a necessidade de investigar o significado epidemiológico dêsse achado.

Reestuda-se a questão de Psychodopygus squamiventris (Lutz & Neiva, 1912), estabelecendo a validade dessa identificação para exemplares de várias procedências. Firma-se o conceito de novas sinonímias.

Estudo comparativo dos métodos coprológicos de Lutz, Kato-Katz e Faust modificado

Foram estudados, comparativamente, em 500 pacientes, os métodos de exames de fezes de Lutz, Faust modificado e Kato-Katz para o diagnóstico parasitológico de fezes. O método de Kato-Katz proporcionou maiores índices de positividade do que as outras duas técnicas no diagnóstico de ancilostomideos, T. trichiurus e S. mansoni. Nenhuma diferença foi observada quanto ao diagnóstico de A. lumbricoides. Para o diagnóstico das protozooses não houve diferença significativa entre os métodos de Faust modificado e de Lutz. Baseado nos dados obtidos, eficiência, simplicidade e rapidez de execução recomenda-se a associação dos métodos de Kato-Katz e Faust modificado na rotina de diagnóstico parasitológico de fezes.

The literal road leading Richmond from exile to victory in Bosworth Field, in 1485, is eventually transformed into a metaphoric path that prefigures the long, deep process of learning undertaken during his 24-year reign. This fundamental process carried out by the king will be approached mainly through the passages focused on the Lambert Simnell/Perkin Warbeck affairs, the most difficult probelms the monarch had to face in a time and in a kingdom of many uncertainties. The Simnell/Warbeck menaces embodied Henry Tudor’s greatest dilemmas, continually emphasised in Bacon’s work – the essence of legitimacy and the essence of royalty.

Consideram-se Simulium antunesi (Lane & Porto, 1940), S. mauense Nunes de Mello, 1974 e S. nilesi Rambajam, 1979 sinonímias de Simulium perflavum Roubaud, 1906; S. sucamense Nunes de Mello, 1974 e S. santaelenae Ramirez-Pérez & Peterson, 1981 sinonímias de S. (Psilopelmia) iracouboense Floch & Abonnenc, 1946; S. major Lane & Porto, 1940 sinonímia S. (Helmicnetha) rubrithorax Lutz, 1909. Ressalta-se a utilização errônea do nome Grenierella para o subgênero Grenieriella Vargas & Nájera, 1951. Simulium (G.) pruinosum Lutz, 1910 é revalidada, e sugere-se que S. nigrimanum Macquart, 1838 volte a ocupar a posição de species inquirendae.

Interação flebotomíneos, animais domésticos e dominância de Lutzomyia (Nyssomyia) intermedia (Lutz & Neiva, 1912) em área com alto grau de antropia, no Sul do Brasil

Relatam-se os resultados de coletas de flebotomíneos em área com elevado grau de antropia, no Município de São Jorge do Ivaí, Estado do Paraná, Brasil. A espécie predominante foi Lutzomyia (Nyssomyia) intermedia (Lutz & Neiva, 1912). Verificou-se que o número de flebotomíneos diminuiu sensivelmente em duas residências com o deslocamento de uma pocilga, à distância de 100 metros das residências, e a desobstrução do porão de uma das residências.

Relata-se a ocorrência, pela primeira vez, do vetor da leishmaniose visceral, Lutzomyia longipalpis, na área urbana de Campo Grande, Mato Grosso do Sul. Discute-se a importância deste encontro na transmissão da doença nessa área.
