During Leg 125, scientists drilled two serpentinite seamounts: Conical Seamount in the Mariana forearc and Torishima Forearc Seamount in the Izu-Bonin forearc. Grain densities of the serpentinized peridotites range from 2.44 to 3.02 g/cm**3. The NRM intensity of the serpentinized peridotites ranges from 0.01 to 0.59 A/m and that of serpentine sediments ranges from 0.01 to 0.43 A/m. Volume susceptibilities of serpentinized peridotites range from 0.05 * 10**-3 SI to 9.78 * 10**-3 SI and from 0.12 * 10**-3 to 4.34 * 10**-3 SI in the sediments. Koenigsberger ratios, a measure of the relative contributions of remanent vs. induced magnetization to the magnetic anomaly, vary from 0.09 to 80.93 in the serpentinites and from 0.06 to 4.74 in the sediments. The AF demagnetization behavior of the serpentinized peridotites shows that a single component of remanence (probably a chemical remanence carried by secondary magnetite) can be isolated in many samples that have a median destructive field less than 9.5 mT. Multiple remanence components are observed in other samples. Serpentine sediments exhibit similar behavior. Comparison of the AF demagnetization of saturation isothermal remanence and NRM suggests that the serpentinized peridotites contain both single-domain and multidomain magnetite particles. The variability of the magnetic properties of serpentinized peridotites reflects the complexity of magnetization acquired during serpentinization. Serpentinized peridotites may contribute to magnetic anomalies in forearc regions.

As part of a larger experiment, atmospheric turbidity measurements were carried out during the austral summer 1985/86 in Adelie Land, Eastern Antarctica at 1560 m elevation. A comparison of our measurements of the solar beam with those of other areas in the Arctic and Antarctic was carried out. Our values were higher than all measurements from the Arctic. For Antarctica, Plateau and Mizuho Stations, both higher in altitude, had somewhat higher values, while the value of the coastal stations were lower. We calculated also turbidity indexes such as Unke's turbidity factor T and Angstrom's turbidity coefficient ß. Mean values of T were around 2.0, which are low values indeed. Beta values were around 0.04, a rather typical value for polar regions. No trend in turbidity could be observed for the time of observation. Further, it could be shown that the decrease in intensity with increasing optical air mass was less pronounced for larger wavelengths than for shorter ones.

A significant number of short-to-mid height RC buildings with wide beams have been constructed in areas of moderate seismicity of Spain, mainly for housing and administrative use. The buildings have a framed structure with one-way slabs; the wide beams constitute the distinctive characteristic, their depth being equal to that of the rest of the slab, thus providing a flat lower surface, convenient for construction and the layout of facilities. Seismic behavior in the direction of the wide beams appears to be deficient because of: (i) low lateral strength, mainly because of the small effective depth of the beams, (ii) inherent low ductility of the wide beams, generated by high amount of reinforcement, (iii) the big strut compressive forces developed inside the column-beam connections due to the low height of the beams, and (iv) the fact that the wide beams are wider than the columns, meaning that the contribution of the outer zones to the resistance of the beam-column joints is unreliable because there is no torsion reinforcement. In the orthogonal direction, the behavior is worse since the only members of the slabs that contribute to the lateral resistance are the joists and the façade beams. Moreover, these buildings were designed with codes that did not include ductility requirements and required only a low lateral resistance; indeed, in many cases, seismic action was not considered at all. Consequently, the seismic capacity of these structures is not reliable. The objective of this research is to assess numerically this capability, whereas further research will aim to propose retrofit strategies. The research approach consists of: (i) selecting a number of 3-story and 6-story buildings that represent the vast majority of the existing ones and (ii) evaluating their vulnerability through three types of analyses, namely: code-type, push-over and nonlinear dynamic analysis. Given the low lateral resistance of the main frames, the cooperation of the masonry infill walls is accounted for; for each representative building, three wall densities are considered. The results of the analyses show that the buildings in question exhibit inadequate seismic behavior in most of the examined situations. In general, the relative performance is less deficient for Target Drift CP (Collapse Prevention) than for IO (Immediate Occupancy). Since these buildings are selected to be representative of the vast majority of buildings with wide beams that were constructed in Spain without accounting for any seismic consideration, our conclusions can be extrapolated to a broader scenario.

After a penetrating lesion in the central nervous system, astrocytes enlarge, divide, and participate in creating an environment that adversely affects neuronal regeneration. We have recently shown that the neural cell adhesion molecule (N-CAM) partially inhibits the division of early postnatal rat astrocytes in vitro. In the present study, we demonstrate that addition of N-CAM, the third immunoglobulin-like domain of N-CAM, or a synthetic decapeptide corresponding to a putative homophilic binding site in N-CAM partially inhibits astrocyte proliferation after a stab lesion in the adult rat brain. Animals were lesioned in the cerebral cortex, hippocampus, or striatum with a Hamilton syringe and needle at defined stereotaxic positions. On one side, the lesions were concomitantly infused with N-CAM or with one of the N-CAM-related molecules. As a control, a peptide of the same composition as the N-CAM decapeptide but of random sequence was infused on the contralateral side of the brain. We consistently found that the population of dividing astrocytes was significantly smaller on the side in which N-CAM or one of the N-CAM-related molecules was infused than on the opposite side. The inhibition was greatest in the cortical lesion sites (approximately 50%) and was less pronounced in the hippocampus (approximately 25%) and striatum (approximately 20%). Two weeks after the lesion, the cerebral cortical sites infused with N-CAM continued to exhibit a significantly smaller population of dividing astrocytes than the sites on the opposite side. When N-CAM and basic fibroblast growth factor, which is known to stimulate astrocyte division in vitro, were coinfused into cortical lesion sites, astrocyte proliferation was still inhibited. These results suggest the hypothesis that, by reducing glial proliferation, N-CAM or its peptides may help create an environment that is more suitable for neuronal regeneration.

By contrast to major constitutional reforms elsewhere in the UK, in England's eight regions beyond London New Labour has favoured administrative decentralisation. This paper examines these institutional arrangements and assesses their capacity to develop a more integrated approach to territorial development. It confirms a growing awareness of the need to ensure greater coherence between policies to promote economic, social and environmental wellbeing. Nonetheless, a complex regional institutional architecture, inconsistent sector-based strategies, a lack of strategic leadership and blurred accountabilities hamper moves towards policy integration and the delivery of joint outcomes. Moreover, despite ongoing reforms, the absence of a clear regional agenda in a functionally designed Whitehall raises fundamental questions about the ability of sub-national bodies to work collectively to develop and implement a more coherent approach to regional policy.

Enterprise policy is increasingly favouring support for high growth firms (HGFs). However, this may be less effective in promoting new jobs and economic development in peripheral regions. This issue is addressed by a study of HGFs in Scotland. Scottish HGFs differ in a number of respects from the stylised facts in the literature. They create less employment than their counterparts elsewhere in the UK. Most have a significant physical presence outside of Scotland, thereby reducing their Scottish 'footprint' and domestic job creation. Scottish HGFs appear to have a high propensity to be acquired, increasing the susceptibility of the head office to closure. The evidence suggests that the tendency towards 'policy universalism' in the sphere of entrepreneurship policy is problematic.

Controlling the growth mechanism for nano-structures is one of the most critical topics in material science. In the past 10 years there has been intensive research worldwide in IIIN based nanowires for its many unique photonic and electrical properties at this scale. There are several advantages to nanostructuring III-N materials, including increased light extraction, increased device efficiency, reduction of efficiency droop, and reduction in crystallographic defect density. High defect densities that normally plague III-N materials and reduce the device efficiency are not an issue for nano-structured devices such as LEDs, due to the effective strain relaxation. Additionally regions of the light spectrum such as green and yellow, once found difficult to achieve in bulk planar LEDs, can be produced by manipulating the confinement and crystal facet growth directions of the active regions. A cheap and easily repeatable self-assembly nano-patterning technique at wafer scale was designed during this thesis for top down production of III-N nanowires. Through annealing under ammonia and N2 gas flow, the first reported dislocation defect bending was observed in III-N nanorods by in-situ transmission electron microscopy heating. By growing on these etched top down nanorods as a template, ultra-dense nanowires with apex tipped semi-polar tops were produced. The uniform spacing of 5nm between each wire is the highest reported space-filling factor at 98%. Finally by using these ultra-dense nanorods bridging the green gap of the light spectrum was possible, producing the first reported red, yellow, green light emission from a single nano-tip.

Macadamias, adapted to the fringes of subtropical rainforests of coastal, eastern Australia, are resilient to mild water stress. Even after prolonged drought, it is difficult to detect stress in commercial trees. Despite this, macadamia orchards in newer irrigated regions produce more consistent crops than those from traditional, rain-fed regions. Crop fluctuations in the latter tend to follow rainfall patterns. The benefit of irrigation in lower rainfall areas is undisputed, but there are many unanswered questions about the most efficient use of irrigation water. Water is used more efficiently when it is less readily available, causing partial stomatal closure that restricts transpiration more than it restricts photosynthesis. Limited research suggests that macadamias can withstand mild stress. In fact, water use efficiency can be increased by strategic deficit irrigation. However, macadamias are susceptible to stress during oil accumulation. There may be benefits of applying more water at critical times, less at others, and this may vary with cultivar. Currently, it is common for macadamia growers to apply about 20-40 L tree-1 day-1 of water to their orchards in winter and 70-90 L tree-1 day-1 in summer. Research reported water use at 20-30 L tree-1 day-1 during winter and 40-50 L tree-1 day-1 in summer using the Granier sap flow technique. The discrepancy between actual water use and farmer practice may be due to water loss via evaporation from the ground, deep drainage and/or greater transpiration due to luxury water consumption. More irrigation research is needed to develop efficient water use and to set practical limits for deficit irrigation management.

The tissue kallikreins are serine proteases encoded by highly conserved multigene families. The rodent kallikrein (KLK) families are particularly large, consisting of 13 26 genes clustered in one chromosomal locus. It has been recently recognised that the human KLK gene family is of a similar size (15 genes) with the identification of another 12 related genes (KLK4-KLK15) within and adjacent to the original human KLK locus (KLK1-3) on chromosome 19q13.4. The structural organisation and size of these new genes is similar to that of other KLK genes except for additional exons encoding 5 or 3 untranslated regions. Moreover, many of these genes have multiple mRNA transcripts, a trait not observed with rodent genes. Unlike all other kallikreins, the KLK4-KLK15 encoded proteases are less related (25–44%) and do not contain a conventional kallikrein loop. Clusters of genes exhibit high prostatic (KLK2-4, KLK15) or pancreatic (KLK6-13) expression, suggesting evolutionary conservation of elements conferring tissue specificity. These genes are also expressed, to varying degrees, in a wider range of tissues suggesting a functional involvement of these newer human kallikrein proteases in a diverse range of physiological processes.
