Utilising Intranet technologies in construction sector SMEs:building up knowledge bases for extreme weather event risk management

Intranet technologies accessible through a web based platform are used to share and build knowledge bases in many industries. Previous research suggests that intranets are capable of providing a useful means to share, collaborate and transact information within an organization. To compete and survive successfully, business organisations are required to effectively manage various risks affecting their businesses. In the construction industry too this is increasingly becoming an important element in business planning. The ability of businesses, especially of SMEs which represent a significant portion in most economies, to manage various risks is often hindered by fragmented knowledge across a large number of businesses. As a solution, this paper argues that Intranet technologies can be used as an effective means of building and sharing knowledge and building up effective knowledge bases for risk management in SMEs, by specifically considering the risks of extreme weather events. The paper discusses and evaluates relevant literature in this regard and identifies the potential for further research to explore this concept.

Systemological Bases of Management Consulting

The problem of management consulting for sustainable development organization support is discussed. The problem is formally described by means of systemological terms. The mathematical problem solving is considered. Practical use of the obtained results is outlined.

Conceptual Information Compression and Efficient Pattern Search

This paper introduces an encoding of knowledge representation statements as regular languages and proposes a two-phase approach to processing of explicitly declared conceptual information. The idea is presented for the simple conceptual graphs where conceptual pattern search is implemented by the so called projection operation. Projection calculations are organised into off-line preprocessing and run-time computations. This enables fast run-time treatment of NP-complete problems, given that the intermediate results of the off-line phase are kept in suitable data structures. The experiments with randomly-generated, middle-size knowledge bases support the claim that the suggested approach radically improves the run-time conceptual pattern search.

Information Processing in a Cognitive Model of NLP

A model of the cognitive process of natural language processing has been developed using the formalism of generalized nets. Following this stage-simulating model, the treatment of information inevitably includes phases, which require joint operations in two knowledge spaces – language and semantics. In order to examine and formalize the relations between the language and the semantic levels of treatment, the language is presented as an information system, conceived on the bases of human cognitive resources, semantic primitives, semantic operators and language rules and data. This approach is applied for modeling a specific grammatical rule – the secondary predication in Russian. Grammatical rules of the language space are expressed as operators in the semantic space. Examples from the linguistics domain are treated and several conclusions for the semantics of the modeled rule are made. The results of applying the information system approach to the language turn up to be consistent with the stages of treatment modeled with the generalized net.

Systemological Bases of Business Intelligence

Sustainable development support, balanced scorecard development and business process modeling are viewed from the position of systemology. Extensional, intentional and potential properties of a system are considered as necessary to satisfy functional requirements of a meta-system. The correspondence between extensional, intentional and potential properties of a system and sustainable, unsustainable, crisis and catastrophic states of a system is determined. The inaccessibility cause of the system mission is uncovered. The correspondence between extensional, intentional and potential properties of a system and balanced scorecard perspectives is showed. The IDEF0 function modeling method is checked against balanced scorecard perspectives. The correspondence between balanced scorecard perspectives and IDEF0 notations is considered.

Information Technologies for the Preservation of Language Heritage

In this paper we try to present how information technologies as tools for the creation of digital bilingual dictionaries can help the preservation of natural languages. Natural languages are an outstanding part of human cultural values and for that reason they should be preserved as part of the world cultural heritage. We describe our work on the bilingual lexical database supporting the Bulgarian-Polish Online dictionary. The main software tools for the web- presentation of the dictionary are shortly described. We focus our special attention on the presentation of verbs, the richest from a specific characteristics viewpoint linguistic category in Bulgarian.

Design of information architecture of the web site of the Faculty of Industrial Engineering and Tourism of the Universidad Central “Marta Abreu” de Las Villas (Cuba)

The information architecture supports information retrieval by users in Web environment. The design should be center in the information user, favoring usability. The Faculty of Industrial Engineering and Tourism of the Universidad Central "Marta Abreu" de Las Villas, lacks a site that enhances the disclosure of information to its members. Are presented as objectives of the study: 1) conduct a user survey to identify information needs of users, 2) establish guidelines for information architecture for the institution focused on users, 3) designing the information architecture for the institution and 4) designed to evaluate the proposal. To obtain results are used methods in the theoretical and empirical levels. Besides, are use techniques that favored the design and evaluation. Is designed the intranet of the Faculty of Industrial Engineering and Tourism. Is evaluated the proposed design for the validation of the results.

Cómo los proyectos deben ir de la mano de un plan de acción concretable que esté acorde con los parámetros básicosconceptuales, fruto de la reflexión del papel que debe cumplir una biblioteca infantil como movilizadora social dentro del ámbito de la sociedad actual, es parte de la temática de la siguiente ponencia.La Escuela de Bibliotecología, Documentación e Información de la Universidad Nacional de Costa Rica, me solicitó explicara un poco como desde nuestra experiencia estamos concretando los procesos de planificación que se deben llevar a cabo para formular y crear un proyecto de extensión comunitaria de una biblioteca infantil.Es importante tener en cuenta el contexto en el qué se sitúa un proceso de planificación y por eso a esta intervención se le ha agregado el título “Bases para la creación de una biblioteca infantil acorde a los retos de la sociedad actual.El concepto de la sociedad actual de la información refleja bastante bien, desde mi punto de vista, los elementos básicos de nuestro entorno social.La sociedad enfrenta un incremento y difusión de la información que dió lugar al término de “sociedad de la información” posteriormente denominada como “sociedad del conocimiento”.Este cambio de terminología lo provocó el hecho que no se trata solo de informarse, sino que es necesario un proceso tanto individual como colectivo de tratamiento de esta información para convertirla en conocimiento. Casi de inmediato comenzamos a percibir que el acceso a lainformación no era suficiente.

La información es un factor importante dentro del desarrollo de los pueblos. La ciencia surge ante una necesidad de responder a interrogantes, de ahí que las civilizaciones más antiguas lograron grandes conquistas en le campo de la ciencia, debido a que para poder subsistir sobre la tierra se vieron obligados a desarrollar técnicas específicas a través de la naturaleza y sus fenómenos. Esta situación permitió acumular gran cantidad de información que posteriormente fue transmitida de una generación a otra a pesar de no contar en esa época con los mejores medios para ello.

Filosofía y Objetivos de los Cursos Análisis de la Información y Bases de Datos, Bibliografía, Documentación y Seminario y Práctica Supervisada

La información es poder o puede convertirse en poder. Por, este motivo el mundo se ha dividido en países ricos y países pobres también en cuanto a información se refiere. Costa Rica se ubica entre estos últimos porque no hemos logrado comprender el valor ni la forma de utilización de este poder. Somos ingenuos en uso porque duplicamos esfuerzos desperdiciamos capacidades, creamos una visión limitada de lo que es la información, no creamos un semillero de ciudadanos con capacidad para utilizarla en el futuro, no logramos utilizarla inteligentemente y no hemos logrado diseminar esta información con eficiencia.
