The goal of this study is to investigate the applicability of different constitutive models for silicone networks using comprehensive multiaxial experimental tests, including non-equibiaxial mechanical tests which introduce differential constraints on the networks in the two orthogonal directions, on samples prepared using various crosslinking densities. Uniaxial stress-strain experiments show that a decrease in crosslinker amounts used in the preparation of silicone networks lead to more compliant material response as compared to that obtained using higher amounts of crosslinker. Biaxial data were used to obtain fits to the neo- Hookean, Mooney-Rivlin, Arruda-Boyce and the Edward-Vilgis slip-link constitutive models. Our results show that the slip-link model, based on separation of the individual contributions of chemical crosslinks and physical entanglements, is better at describing the stress-strain response of highly crosslinked networks at low stretches as compared to other constitutive models. Modulus obtained using the slip-link model for highly crosslinked networks agrees with experimentally determined values obtained using uniaxial tension experiments. In contrast, moduli obtained using coefficients to the other constitutive models underpredict experimentally determined moduli by over 40 %. However, the slip-link model did not predict the experimentally observed stiffening response at higher stretches which was better captured using the Arruda-Boyce model.

Significant progress in understanding the mechanical behavior of metallic glasses (MGs) was made over the past decade, particularly on mechanisms of plastic deformation. However, recent research thrust has been on exploring the mechanics and physics of fracture. MGs can be very brittle with K-Ic values similar to silicate glasses and ceramics or very tough with K-Ic akin to high toughness crystalline metals. Even the tough MGs can become brittle with structural relaxation following annealing at temperatures close to glass transition temperature (T-g). Detailed experimental studies coupled with complementary numerical simulations of the recent past have provided insights on the micromechanisms of failure as well as nature of crack tip fields, and established the governing fracture criteria for ductile and brittle glasses. In this paper, the above advances are reviewed and outstanding issues in the context of fracture of amorphous alloys that need to be resolved are identified.

Molecular mechanics based finite element analysis is adopted in the current work to evaluate the mechanical properties of Zigzag, Armchair and Chiral Single wall Carbon Nanotubes (SWCNT) of different diameters and chiralities. Three different types of atomic bonds, that is Carbon Carbon covalent bond and two types of Carbon Carbon van der Waals bonds are considered in the carbon nanotube system. The stiffness values of these bonds are calculated using the molecular potentials, namely Morse potential function and Lennard-Jones interaction potential function respectively and these stiffness's are assigned to spring elements in the finite element model of the CNT. The geometry of CNT is built using a macro that is developed for the finite element analysis software. The finite element model of the CNT is constructed, appropriate boundary conditions are applied and the behavior of mechanical properties of CNT is studied.

There is a need to use probability distributions with power-law decaying tails to describe the large variations exhibited by some of the physical phenomena. The Weierstrass Random Walk (WRW) shows promise for modeling such phenomena. The theory of anomalous diffusion is now well established. It has found number of applications in Physics, Chemistry and Biology. However, its applications are limited in structural mechanics in general, and structural engineering in particular. The aim of this paper is to present some mathematical preliminaries related to WRW that would help in possible applications. In the limiting case, it represents a diffusion process whose evolution is governed by a fractional partial differential equation. Three applications of superdiffusion processes in mechanics, illustrating their effectiveness in handling large variations, are presented.

In this work, we present a numerical study of flow of shear thinning viscoelastic fluids in rectangular lid driven cavities for a wide range of aspect ratios (depth to width ratio) varying from 1/16 to 4. In particular, the effect of elasticity, inertia, model parameters and polymer concentration on flow features in rectangular driven cavity has been studied for two shear thinning viscoelastic fluids, namely, Giesekus and linear PTT. We perform numerical simulations using the symmetric square root representation of the conformation tensor to stabilize the numerical scheme against the high Weissenberg number problem. The variation in flow structures associated with merging and splitting of elongated vortices in shallow cavities and coalescence of corner eddies to yield a second primary vortex in deep cavities with respect to the variation in flow parameters is discussed. We discuss the effect of the dominant eigenvalues and the corresponding eigenvectors on the location of the primary eddy in the cavity. We also demonstrate, by performing numerical simulations for shallow and deep cavities, that where the Deborah number (based on convective time scale) characterizes the elastic behaviour of the fluid in deep cavities, Weissenberg number (based on shear rate) should be used for shallow cavities. This paper presents an analysis of crack problems in homogeneous piezoelectrics or on the interfaces between two dissimilar piezoelectric materials based on the continuity of normal electric displacement and electric potential across the crack faces. The explicit analytic solutions are obtained for a single crack in an infinite piezoelectric or on the interface of piezoelectric bimaterials. For homogeneous materials it is found that the normal electric displacement D-2, induced by the crack, is constant along the crack faces which depends only on the remote applied stress fields. Within the crack slit, the perturbed electric fields induced by the crack are also constant and not affected by the applied electric displacement fields. For bimaterials, generally speaking, an interface crack exhibits oscillatory behavior and the normal electric displacement D-2 is a complex function along the crack faces. However, for bimaterials, having certain symmetry, in which an interface crack displays no oscillatory behavior, it is observed that the normal electric displacement D-2 is also constant along the crack faces and the electric field E-2 has the singularity ahead of the crack tip and has a jump across the interface. Energy release rates are established for homogeneous materials and bimaterials having certain symmetry. Both the crack front parallel to the poling axis and perpendicular to the poling axis are discussed. It is revealed that the energy release rates are always positive for stable materials and the applied electric displacements have no contribution to the energy release rates.

By recalling mankind's path during past 50 years in the present article, we mainly highlight the significance of environmental issues today. In particular, two major factors leading to environment deterioration in China such as water resources and coal burning are stressed on. Present-day environmental issues are obviously interdisciplinary, of multiple scales and multi-composition in nature. Therefore, a process-based approach for environment research is absolutely necessarily. A series of sub-processes, either physical, chemical or biological, are subsequently analyzed in order to established reasonable parameterization scheme and credible comprehensive model. And we are now in a position to answer questions still open to us, improve existing somewhat empirical engineering approaches and enhance quantitative accuracy in prediction. To illustrate this process-based research approach, three typical examples associated with the Yangtze River Estuary, Loess Plateau and Tenggeli Desert environments have been dealt with respectively. A theoretical model of vertical flow field accounting for runoff and tide interaction has been established to delineate salinity and sediment motion which are responsible for the formation of mouth bar at the outlet and the ecological evolution there. A kinematic wave theory combined with the revised Green-Ampt infiltration formula is applied to the prediction of runoff generation and erosion in three types of erosion region on the Loess Plateau. Three approaches describing water motion in SPAC system in arid areas at different levels have been improved by introducing vegetation sub-models. However, we have found that the formation of a dry sandy layer and biological crust skin are additional primary causes leading to deterioration of water supply and succession of ecological system.

A review is presented of the mechanics of microscale adhesion in microelectromechanical systems (MEMS). Some governing dimensionless numbers such as Tabor number, adhesion parameter and peel number for microscale elastic adhesion contact are discussed in detail. The peel number is modified for the elastic contact between a rough surface in contact with a smooth plane. Roughness ratio is introduced to characterize the relative importance of surface roughness for microscale adhesion contact, and three kinds of asperity height distributions are discussed: Gaussian, fractal, and exponential distributions. Both Gaussian and exponential distributions are found to be special cases of fractal distribution. Casimir force induced adhesion in MEMS, and adhesion of carbon nanotubes to a substrate are also discussed. Finally, microscale plastic adhesion contact theory is briefly reviewed, and it is found that the dimensionless number, plasticity index of various forms, can be expressed by the roughness ratio.

It is demonstrated that when tension leg platform (TLP) moves with finite amplitude in waves, the inertia force, the drag force and the buoyancy acting on the platform are nonlinear functions of the response of TLP. The tensions of the tethers are also nonlinear functions of the displacement of TLP. Then the displacement, the velocity and the acceleration of TLP should be taken into account when loads are calculated. In addition, equations of motions should be set up on the instantaneous position. A theoretical model for analyzing the nonlinear behavior of a TLP with finite displacement is developed, in which multifold nonlinearities are taken into account, i.e., finite displacement, coupling of the six degrees of freedom, instantaneous position, instantaneous wet surface, free surface effects and viscous drag force. Based on the theoretical model, the comprehensive nonlinear differential equations are deduced. Then the nonlinear dynamic analysis of ISSC TLP in regular waves is performed in the time domain. The degenerative linear solution of the proposed nonlinear model is verified with existing published one. Furthermore, numerical results are presented, which illustrate that nonlinearities exert a significant influence on the dynamic responses of the TLP.

This paper carries out the analysis of mechanics of a grip system of three-key-board hydraulic tongs developed for offshore oil pipe lines which has been successfully used in oil fields in China. The main improvement of this system is that a lever frame structure is used in the structural design, which reduces greatly the stresses of the major components of the oil pipe tongs. Theoretical analysis and numerical calculation based on thirteen basic equations developed Show that the teeth board of the tongs is not easy to slip as frequently happens to other systems and is of higher reliability.

The metal thin film delamination along metal/ceramic interface in the case of large scale yielding is studied by employing the strain gradient plasticity theory and the material microscale effects are considered. Two different fracture process models are used in this study to describe the nonlinear delamination phenomena for metal thin films. A set of experiments have been done on the mechanism of copper films delaminating from silica substrates, based on which the peak interface separation stress and the micro-length scale of material, as well as the dislocation-free zone size are predicted.
