A study of T=1, T=3/2, and T=2 states in some light nuclei using (He^3,n) reactions

The (He³, n) reactions on B¹¹, N¹⁵, O¹⁶, and O¹⁸ targets have been studied using a pulsed-beam time-of-flight spectrometer. Special emphasis was placed upon the determination of the excitation energies and properties of states with T = 1 (in Ne¹⁸), T = 3/2 (in N¹³ and F¹⁷) and T = 2 (in Ne²⁰). The identification of the T = 3/2 and T = 2 levels is based on the structure of these states as revealed by intensities and shapes of angular distributions. The reactions are interpreted in terms of double stripping theory. Angular distributions have been compared with plane and distorted wave stripping theories. Results for the four reactions are summarized below:

1) O¹⁶ (He³, n). The reaction has been studied at incident energies up to 13.5 MeV and two previously unreported levels in Ne¹⁸ were observed at E_x = 4.55 ± .015 MeV (Γ = 70 ± 30 keV) and E_x = 5.14 ± .018 MeV (Γ = 100 ± 40 keV).

2) B¹¹ (He³, n). The reaction has been studied at incident energies up to 13.5 MeV. Three T = 3/2 levels in N¹³ have been identified at E_x = 15.068 ± .008 MeV (Γ ˂ 15 keV), E_x = 18.44 ± .04, and E_x 18.98 ± .02 MeV (Γ = 40 ± 20 keV).

3) N¹⁵ (He³, n). The reaction has been studied at incident energies up to 11.88 MeV. T = 3/2 levels in F¹⁷ have been identified at E_x = 11.195 ± .007 MeV (Γ ˂ 20 keV), E_x = 12.540 ± .010 MeV (Γ ˂ 25 keV), and E_x = 13.095 ± .009 MeV (Γ ˂ 25 keV).

4) O¹⁸ (He³, n). The reaction has been studied at incident energies up to 9.0 MeV. The excitation energy of the lowest T = 2 level in Ne²⁰ has been found to be 16.730 ± .006 MeV (Γ ˂ 20 keV).

Angular distributions of the transitions leading to the above higher isospin states are well described by double stripping theory. Analog correspondences are established by comparing the present results with recent studies (t, p) and (He³, p) reactions on the same targets.

Void swelling in MA956 ODS steel irradiated with 122 MeV Ne-ions at elevated temperatures

An investigation of a commercial oxide dispersion-strengthened steel (MA9561) irradiated with high energy Ne-ions to high doses at elevated temperatures is presented. Specimens of MA956 oxide dispersion strengthened steel together with a 9% Cr ferritic/martensitic steel, e.g., Grade 92 steel were irradiated simultaneously with 20Ne-ions (with 122 MeV) to successively increasing damage levels of 1, 5 and 10 dpa at the damage peak at 440 C and 570 C, respectively. Cross-sectional microstructures of the specimens were investigated with transmission electron microscopy. MA956 oxide dispersion strengthened steel showed a higher resistance to void swelling especially to void growth at the grain boundaries than the ferritic/martensitic steel, e.g., Grade 92 steel did, and thus exhibited a prominence for an application in the situation of a high He production at high temperatures. The suppression of the growth of voids especially at the grain boundaries in MA956 is ascribed to an enhanced recombination of the point defects and a trapping of Ne atoms at the interfaces of the yttrium–aluminum oxide particles and the matrix.

MEASUREMENT OF THE PROTON-PROTON CORRELATION FUNCTION FROM THE BREAK-UP OF Mg-22 AND Ne-20

An experiment of Mg-22 and Ne-20 beams bombarding on a C-12 target at an energy of 60 similar to 70 A MeV has been performed at the RIKEN projectile fragment separator (RIPS)in the RIKEN Ring Cyclotron Facility to study the two-proton correlated emission from Mg-22 and Ne-20 excited states. The two-protons momentum correlation functions have been obtained for Mg-22 and Ne-20, respectively. The trajectories of the Mg-22 decayed products (Ne-20 + p + p) were also measured to get the angular correlations between the two protons in Center of Mass of decaying system by relativistic-kinematics reconstruction. The results exhibit that Mg-22 has the features of He-2 cluster decay mechanism.

Fluorescence yields for 3lnl′ Rydberg series in ions belonging to the He isoelectronic sequence

Fluorescence yields are reported for 3lnl' Rydberg series members in He-like ions of N, O and Ne. Results are presented for singlet series members with n values between 3 and 9, i.e. up to the region of overlap with the states belonging to the 4l4l' manifold in these atoms. This data is required, for example, for the interpretation of charge-exchange experiments involving bare N, O and Ne nuclei. Fluorescence yields, averaged over all 3lnl' singlet states, larger than 50% are obtained from about n = 7.

Hybrid time dependent/independent solution for the He i line ratio temperature and density diagnostic for a thermal helium beam with applications in the scrape-off layer-edge regions in tokamaks

Spectroscopic studies of line emission intensities and ratios offer an attractive option in the\r\ndevelopment of non-invasive plasma diagnostics. Evaluating ratios of selected He I line\r\nemission profiles from the singlet and triplet neutral helium spin systems allows for simultaneous\r\nmeasurement of electron density (ne) and temperature (Te) profiles. Typically, this powerful\r\ndiagnostic tool is limited by the relatively long relaxation times of the 3S metastable term of helium\r\nthat populates the triplet spin system, and on which electron temperature sensitive lines are based.\r\nBy developing a time dependent analytical solution, we model the time evolution of the two spin\r\nsystems. We present a hybrid time dependent/independent line ratio solution that improves the\r\nrange of application of this diagnostic technique in the scrape-off layer (SOL) and edge plasma\r\nregions when comparing it against the current equilibrium line ratio helium model used at\r\nTEXTOR.
