‘The Father of Canadian Transportation’ is a term commonly associated with William Hamilton Merritt. Although he is most known for being one of the driving forces behind the building of the first Welland Canal, he was many things throughout his life; a soldier, merchant, promoter, entrepreneur and politician to name a few. Born on July 3, 1793 at Bedford, Westchester County, N.Y. to Thomas Merritt and Mary Hamilton, Merritt’s family relocated to Canada shortly after in 1796. The move came after Merritt’s father petitioned John Graves Simcoe for land in Upper Canada after serving under him in the Queen’s Rangers during the American Revolution. The family quickly settled into their life at Twelve Mile Creek in St. Catharines. Merritt’s father became sheriff of Lincoln County in 1803 while Merritt began his education in mathematics and surveying. After some brief travel and further education Merritt returned to Lincoln County, in 1809 to help farm his father’s land and open a general store. While a farmer and merchant, Merritt turned his attention to military endeavours. A short time after being commissioned as a Lieutenant in the Lincoln militia, the War of 1812 broke out. Fulfilling his duty, Merritt fought in the Battle of Queenston Heights in October of 1812, and numerous small battles until the Battle of Lundy’s Lane in July 1814. It was here that Merritt was captured and held in Cheshire, Massachusetts until the war ended. Arriving back in the St. Catharines area upon his release, Merritt returned to being a merchant, as well as becoming a surveyor and mill owner. Some historians hypothesize that the need to draw water to his mill was how the idea of the Welland Canals was born. Beginning with a plan to connect the Welland River with the Twelve mile creek quickly developed into a connection between the Lakes Erie and Ontario. Its main purpose was to improve the St. Lawrence transportation system and provide a convenient way to transport goods without having to go through the Niagara Falls portage. The plan was set in motion in 1818, but most living in Queenston and Niagara were not happy with it as it would drive business away from them. Along with the opposition came financial and political restraints. Despite these factors Merritt pushed on and the Welland Canal Company was chartered by the Upper Canadian Assembly on January 19, 1824. The first sod was turned on November 30, 1824 almost a year after the initial chartering. Many difficulties arose during the building of the canal including financial, physical, and geographic restrictions. Despite the difficulties two schooners passed through the canal on November 30, 1829. Throughout the next four years continual work was done on the canal as it expended and was modified to better accommodate large ships. After his canal was underway Merritt took a more active role in the political arena, where he served in various positions throughout Upper Canada. In 1851, Merritt withdrew from the Executive Council for numerous reasons, one of which being that pubic interest had diverted from the canals to railways. Merritt tried his hand at other public works outside transportation and trade. He looked into building a lunatic asylum, worked on behalf of War of 1812 veterans, aided in building Brock’s monument, established schools, aided refugee slaves from the U.S. and tried to establish a National Archives among many other feats. He was described by some as having “policy too liberal – conceptions too vast – views too comprehensive to be comprehensible by all”, but he still made a great difference in the society in which he lived. One such group is the Welland Canals Foundation. They describe themselves as: “. . . a volunteer organization which strives to promote the importance of the present and past Welland Canals, and to preserve their history and heritage. The Foundation began in 1980 and carries on events like William Hamilton Merritt Day. The group has strongly supported the Welland Canals Parkway initiative and numerous other activities”. The Welland Canals Foundation does not work alone. They have help from other local groups such as the St. Catharines Historical Society. The recipient of the letters is John Henry Dunn who was born on St. Helena (a British territory island of volcanic origin located in the South Atlantic Ocean) in 1792 to John Charles Dunn and Elizabeth Bazette. He was married to Charlotte Roberts on May 4th, 1820 and they had 6 sons and 2 daughters. He came to Canada in 1820 in which year he became the Receiver General for Canada. He held this position until 1841.Charlotte died in 1835. In 1822 he was named to the Province’s Legislative Council. He was president of the Welland Canal Company from 1825-1833. In 1836 he was named to the executive council of Upper Canada but resigned 3 weeks later with fellow counselors when lieutenant governor Sir Francis Bond refused the advice of the council. Dunn was made the Receiver General for the newly formed Province of Canada in 1841, and was elected to represent Toronto in the legislative assembly that year. He married his second wife on March 9th, 1842. Her name was Sophie-Louise Juchereau Duchsnay. They had a son and a daughter. In 1843 he resigned, and was not re-elected in 1844. He returned to England with his family and died in London on April 21, 1854. Dunn was a supporter of the Welland Canal, St. Lawrence Canals and other public improvements. Between the passage of the Canada Trade Act and the Act of the Union he had tried to insure that projects received funding despite financial constraints. He claimed that he has saved Upper Canada from bankruptcy. His son, Alexander Roberts Dunn received the Victoria Cross for his role in the Charge of the Light Brigade at Balaclava. Dunn Street in Niagara Falls is named after John Henry Dunn. The town and township of Dunnville were also named for him. En concevant que toute société a deux clivages dominants, l’un social et l’autre partisan, cette thèse développe une théorie sur le changement institutionnel. L’hypothèse initiale, selon laquelle les groupes sociaux créés par le premier clivage agiront pour restreindre le changement institutionnel et que le changement aura lieu lors de l’émergence d’un groupe partisan capable de croiser le clivage social, fut testée par les processus traçant les changements qui furent proposés et qui ont eu lieu au sein des conseils nominés en Amérique du Nord britannique. Ces conseils furent modifiés un bon nombre de fois, devenant les chambres secondaires de législatures provinciales avant d’être éventuellement abolies. La preuve supporte l’hypothèse, bien qu’il ne soit pas suffisant d’avoir un groupe partisan qui puisse croiser le clivage qui mène le changement : un débat partisan sur le changement est nécessaire. Ceci remet aussi en cause la théorie prédominante selon laquelle les clivages sociaux mènent à la formation de partis politiques, suggérant qu’il est plus bénéfique d’utiliser ces deux clivages pour l’étude des institutions.

RESUMO: A Marca de um País também vende. A imagem de um País é nos dias de hoje um activo muito importante para a sua economia. Uma marca é uma promessa feita ao consumidor, é o ponto de referência de todas as impressões, positivas e negativas adquiridas ao longo do tempo. O Marketing é a ferramenta que deverá percepcionar, estudar e apresentar factores de diferenciação, mostrar e convencer os consumidores das qualidades de um produto ou serviço. A realidade impõe uma atenção especial ao tema e a Marca Portugal teve um boom de programas de desenvolvimento e de promoção a partir dos anos 90 do séc. XX. O responsável pela gestão da Marca Portugal é o Governo, através da AICEP, Agência para o Investimento e Comércio Externo de Portugal, que tem como missão aumentar a notoriedade de Portugal, dinamizando o investimento estruturante e a internacionalização das empresas, criando condições competitivas e estimulando a exportação no Mercado Global, diversificando a oferta dos produtos e os Países de Destino. A falta de estratégia e os planos mal sucedidos, são alguns dos erros apontados à gestão da Marca Portugal, mas é determinante assumir claramente que a assumpção da Marca e o seu Reposicionamento é um vector estratégico para o desenvolvimento do País. Portugal tem boas referências, na indústria, nos serviços, tem produto, que podem ajudar a promover a imagem global de Portugal e contribuir para o aumento das receitas, seja das exportações, do Turismo ou do Investimento Estrangeiro. Portugal precisa de um Plano de Marketing e de uma entidade gestora de Marca, que garanta uma gestão eficaz da Marca Portugal, integrada e articulada com todos os produtos e serviços estratégicos para a exportação ou para o consumo interno. Esta dissertação apresenta um Modelo de Reposicionamento da Marca Portugal que agrega todos os pontos positivos que Portugal possui, como, a sua capacidade de vendas, o seu potencial para se investir, o que há para ser visitado, e desenvolve um programa sério e transversal que promova Portugal no estrangeiro e que atraia investidores e visitantes. ABSTRACT: The Brand of a Nation also sells. The image of a country is, nowadays, an important asset for its economy. A brand is a promise made to the consumer; it is the reference point for all impressions, positive and negative acquired over time. Marketing is the tool that must perceive, study and present differentiation factors, must show and convince consumers about the qualities of a product or service. Reality demands a special attention to this topic and the Portugal Brand experienced a development and promotion program boom since the 20th Century 90’s. Currently, the figure in charge of the management of the Portugal Brand is the Government, through AICEP, whose mission is to increase the notoriety of Portugal, captivating structural investment and the internationalization of enterprises, mainly small and medium businesses, creating competitive conditions and stimulating exports to the Global Market, diversifying product offer and Destination Countries. Some errors have been pointed out in the management of the Portugal Brand, such as lack of strategy and unsuccessful plans, but it is imperative to irrevocably understand that Brand assumption and its Repositioning is a strategic vector for the development of the Country. Portugal has good references, either in industry, or services, has product, that help promoting Portugal’s global image and contributing to an increase in revenues, either in exports, Tourism or Direct Investment. Portugal needs a Marketing Plan and a Brand management entity, such as a Brand strategic executive council, to ensure an effective management of the Portugal Brand, integrated and articulated with all the products and services flagged as strategic assets for exportation or domestic use. This thesis presents a Repositioning Model of the Portugal Brand that aggregates all positive aspects that Portugal has, such as sale capacity, potential for investment, lots of places to visit, and develops a serious and transversal program to promote Portugal abroad and to attract investors and visitors alike.

The International Plant Proteomics Organization (INPPO) is a non-profit-organization consisting of people who are involved or interested in plant proteomics. INPPO is constantly growing in volume and activity, which is mostly due to the realization among plant proteomics researchers worldwide for the need of such a global platform. Their active participation resulted in the rapid growth within the first year of INPPO’s official launch in 2011 via its website (www.inppo.com) and publication of the ‘viewpoint paper’ in a special issue of PROTEOMICS (May 2011). Here, we will be highlighting the progress achieved in the year 2011 and the future targets for the year 2012 and onwards. INPPO has achieved a successful administrative structure, the Core Committee (CC; composed of President, Vice-President, and General Secretaries), Executive Council (EC), and General Body (GB) toward achieving the INPPO objectives by its proposed initiatives. Various committees and subcommittees are in the process of being functionalized via discussion amongst scientists around the globe. INPPO’s primary aim to popularize the plant proteomics research in biological sciences has also been recognized by PROTEOMICS where a new section has been introduced to plant proteomics starting January 2012, following the very first issue of this journal devoted to plant proteomics in May 2011. To disseminate organizational activities to the scientific community, INPPO has launched a biannual (in January & July) newsletter entitled “INPPO Express: News & Views” with the first issue published in January 2012. INPPO is also planning to have several activities in 2012, including programs within the Education Outreach committee in different countries, and the development of research ideas and proposals with priority on crop and horticultural plants, while keeping tight interactions with proteomics programs on model plants such as Arabidopsis thaliana, rice, or Medicago truncatula. Altogether, the INPPO progress and upcoming activities are because of immense support, dedication, and hard work of all members of the INPPO family, and also due to the wide encouragement and support from the communities (scientific and non-scientific).
