This study aims to explore the nature of shame, while emotional experience and its relationship with loneliness in the chronic mentally ill. We evaluated the internal and external shame, loneliness, and negative emotional states, including depression, anxiety and stress. 41 users participated in this investigation with a diagnosis of mental disorder. To assess the psychological variables was intended to use Internal Shame Scale (ISS), the Foreign Shame Scale (OAS), the UCLA Loneliness Scale and the Scale for Depression, Anxiety and Stress (DASS-21). The results indicated that the mentally ill in our sample have higher levels of shame compared to the general population. They are women who have higher levels of internal shame, while the divorced have higher rates of external shame and loneliness. Patients who have a work activity demonstrate lower levels of loneliness and depression. The higher the educational level of participants, the lower the level of anxiety. In the comparative study of institutionalized patients and non-institutionalized, it was found that the former have significantly higher levels of anxiety, not distinguishing relation to the perception of loneliness and shame (internal and external). The analysis of the relationship between the variables showed that the values of internal shame and loneliness were positively associated with depression and high and moderately to anxiety and stress. Despite the recognized limitations, this study contributes to a better understanding of negative emotional states in the mentally ill.

The main objective of this study is to understand how self - compassion is related to the self - criticism and psychopathological symptoms, specifically, anxiety, depression and stress in adolescence. At the same time we sought to test the application of the scale of self-pity to a sample of adolescents and it is carried to its adaptation and psychometric study of this specific developmental period. The sample included 130 boys and 48 girls with a mean age of 16.92 years (SD = 1.40) and average years of schooling was 9.99 (SD = 1.67). In the present study we used the following instruments: the Self - Compassion (SCS), Depression, Anxiety and Stress Scale (DASS), and the Forms of Self – Criticizing/Attacking and Self – Reassuring Scale (FSCRS). The scale of self- compassion showed good internal consistency and good temporal stability. The results indicated that the boys present levels of self - compassion significantly higher than girls. In both sexes were observed in the expected correlations between self-pity and negative emotional states, self-criticism and self-reassurance. In other words, the higher the level of adolescent self-pity, less depressive symptoms, anxiety and stress associated with the present as well as lower your self-criticism. In contrast, the larger the self-compassion, the greater the ability to self-reassuring. Conclusion: Based on the available research in adults, I contribute to this study was to extend to adolescents not only the assessment of self- compassion, as well as their association with variables. Thus, the results suggest that in adolescents, self- compassion can reduce their vulnerability to negative emotional states translated, either by symptoms of anxiety, depression and stress, either by adopting a self-critical style exaggerated and dysfunctional.

Depression in children and adolescents, as well as in adults, is one of the most common mental disorders. Since its appearance in these age groups leads to serious consequences in adulthood, it is critical to identify depressive symptoms in early stages. Therefore, self-report instruments play a key role in this contexto since they allow to easily, reliably and validly have access to ways the subject thinks, feels and acts. The aim of this study was to translate, adapt and study the Center for Epidemiological Studies Depression Scale for Children (CES-DC) (Weissman, Orvash & Padian, 1980) for portuguese adolescents. The sample consists of 417 adolescents, aged between 12 and 18 years old, attending the 3rd cycle of basic education and secondary education schools. To study the convergent and divergent validity of the CES-DC, the Depression Anxiety Stress Scales (DASS 21) (Lovibond & Lovibond, 1995) was used, along with the Children's depression Inventory (CDI) (Sailor, 1994) and the Students' Life Satisfaction Scale (SLSS) (Marques, Pais-Ribeiro & Lopez, 2007) that evaluate, respectively, the negative emotional states (depression, anxiety and stress), depressive symptoms and overall satisfaction with life. The results show that the evaluated scale presents a good internal consistency, an adequate temporal stability as well as good validity. They also suggest that this is a three-dimensional scale: humor factor, interpersonal factor and happiness factor. These data allow for the progress of psychology, regarding the assessment and clinical practice among adolescents. The usefulness of the questionnaire should be verified in other age groups, especially in children with less than 12 years old and in a clinical sample. Despite these limitations, the results suggest that CES-DC is useful in the assessment questionnaire of depressive symptoms in adolescents.

This research study investigates the role and impact of psychoanalytically-informed short-term parent work with long-term foster carers of looked-after children, in support of the foster placement. The study reflects on the data gathered from four child assessments and five foster families seen by a psychoanalytic child psychotherapist for four sessions each. It draws on psychoanalytic ideas from a range of theoretical traditions, exploring such concepts as trauma, defences, compulsion to repeat, psychological-mindedness, ‘container/contained’ (Bion) and ‘holding environment’ (Winnicott). One distinctive contribution of this research is what it adds to our already existing understanding of the defences (or responses) aroused in the carer when faced with the intense and distressing affect associated with the child’s early trauma; and the impact of this legacy of trauma on the child, on the carer and on the wider Social Services system. Applying Grounded Theory and psychoanalytically-informed clinical case study methodology to the research material, the study breaks down the data analysis into seven stages of coding, from the initial reading of the data to the eventual development of two key hypotheses. One of the predominant themes that emerged from the analysis was the carer’s capacity to remain focused on the child’s emotional needs and how this in turn was linked to the direction of the therapist’s focus. The successive analyses of the data culminated in the hypothesis that the more the therapist focused on the carer and the carer’s emotional states in the course of the parent work, the more the carer was enabled to focus on the child’s emotional needs. As the system of categories emerged according to the themes exemplified in the sessions, a particular focus of analysis became the concept of psychologicalmindedness, considered under several sub-categories: displaying insightful comments; awareness of the child’s bodily states; awareness of the child’s affect; the carer’s ability to recognize the child’s defences; and the carer’s ability to make links between the child’s current difficulties and the child’s past experiences. Through this analysis it became apparent that degree of psychological-mindedness was closely linked to the individual carer’s capacity to metabolize the child’s distressed and distressing communication. This in turn led to a deeper exploration of the situations that were particularly challenging for the carers: i.e., instances when the child was compelled to repeat past traumatic emotional states and as a result was communicating intense distress. This exploration eventually generated the second hypothesis: that in reaction to the child’s distress, the response of each carer could be plotted somewhere along a spectrum, from either distancing themselves from the child’s emotional state to seeking excessive closeness with the child (merging). The next stage of the analysis developed four new categories of carer responses to the distressed child: identification and distancing from the child; identification and merging with the child; the category that describes the carer’s psychologicalmindedness as being ‘impaired’; and ‘good enough’ caring. This then led to an exploration of the carer’s own defences at these most challenging times. This research demonstrates clearly that even within the short space of four sessions of weekly psychoanalytic parent work, it is possible to achieve significant improvement in a carer’s capacity to bear the child’s compulsion to repeat early traumas, and to help the carers become more emotionally available to provide the child with effective psychological parenting at such difficult and challenging times. Key words: looked-after children; long-term foster carers; psychoanalytic short-term parent work; trauma; compulsion to repeat; psychological-mindedness; empathy; defences; psychoanalytically-informed clinical case study research methodology; Grounded Theory research methodology.

The purpose of this study was to analyze emotions related to a child’s critical illness from the perspective of the family and discuss the link those emotions might form with value creation. High quality service is of paramount importance in hospital care, especially when a child is diagnosed with critical illness. Through the analysis of patient family emotions and their triggers, the study was aiming to deepen the understanding of value creation for customer. Therefore, the research sought to find answers to the following three sub-questions: 1. What are the emotions experienced? 2. What triggers them? 3. How are the emotions linked to amelioration or aggravation of value for patient and family? The theoretical background of this research is built on two core concepts: emotions and value creation. As both concepts are wide and multifaceted, the research concentrates on viewing emotions from the applicable cognitive angle, identifying and categorizing emotions in a general level. Value creation is studied from the service perspective, discussing the possible relations between emotions and value creation. Moreover, the suitability of views regarding customer value co-creation to health care encounters is analyzed. Qualitative approach was selected as the most appropriate methodology for conducting the empirical research. The empirical data was collected from public blogs, for which a total of 18 blogs were reviewed. Five blogs were selected for the analysis, which had the intent of identifying the emotions experienced by patient families and deepening the knowledge of their role in value creation during health care service encounters. The empirical study of this research discovered a wide range of positive and negative emotions, which denotes that a severe life situation does not prevent the feeling of positive emotions. Furthermore, by combining the empirical findings to the theoretical background, this study concludes that recognizing and treating the patient family as a partner and value creator is essential. The high quality technical aspect of care is vital, but it is not the sole attribute for service quality, as the interpersonal communication plays a large role in the customer’s overall assessment of the health care performance. The patients and their families largely evaluate the service encounter based on their perceptions, thus emotions play a significant role. Depending on the service experience, value maybe created or destructed. Hence, this study posits emotion at the core of the service encounter, indicating towards the importance of active assessment of customer perceptions and the recognition of the emotional states

We propose a study of the mathematical properties of voice as an audio signal -- This work includes signals in which the channel conditions are not ideal for emotion recognition -- Multiresolution analysis- discrete wavelet transform – was performed through the use of Daubechies Wavelet Family (Db1-Haar, Db6, Db8, Db10) allowing the decomposition of the initial audio signal into sets of coefficients on which a set of features was extracted and analyzed statistically in order to differentiate emotional states -- ANNs proved to be a system that allows an appropriate classification of such states -- This study shows that the extracted features using wavelet decomposition are enough to analyze and extract emotional content in audio signals presenting a high accuracy rate in classification of emotional states without the need to use other kinds of classical frequency-time features -- Accordingly, this paper seeks to characterize mathematically the six basic emotions in humans: boredom, disgust, happiness, anxiety, anger and sadness, also included the neutrality, for a total of seven states to identify

Theory of mind (also called ‘mindreading’), is the ability to explain and predict others’ behaviour by inferring their mental states, such as their knowledge, beliefs, perceptions and desires. One largely unexplored question in theory of mind research is the relationship between personality and theory of mind abilities in adults. The current study investigated introverts’ and extraverts’ performance on two theory of mind tasks: one task involved judging emotional states from pictures of eyes (RMTE task), and the other involved making judgments about one’s own and others’ visual perspective (AVP task). In both tasks, the personal relevance of the situation was varied to examine whether this factor would differentially affect the performance of introverts and extraverts. There was a significant interaction between personality (introvert vs. extravert) and condition (personal vs. impersonal) in the AVP task, with extraverts performing better in the personal than in the impersonal condition but introverts performing the same in both conditions. In the RMTE task there was no interaction, as all participants performed better in the personal condition regardless of personality. There was also a main effect of personality in the RMTE, with introverts performing better overall than extraverts at judging emotions from eyes. Possible reasons behind these and other observed differences are discussed.

Self-identified sad music (SISM) is often listened to when experiencing sad life situations. Research indicatesthat the most common reason people give for listening to SISM is “to be in touch with or express feelings ofsadness”. But why might this be the case? We suggest that one reason people choose to listen to sad musicwhen feeling sad is to accept aversive situations. We tested if SISM is associated with acceptance copingand consolation. We hypothesized that SISM relates to acceptance-based coping via the recognitionand identification of emotional states, and that people will report more acceptance from SISM than selfidentifiedhappy music when seeking consolation. In Study 1, participants recalled how happy or sadthe music sounds that they normally listen to for consolation, and if they listen to this music to gainacceptance of negative moods and situations. In Study 2, participants reported their goals when listeningto sad music during a recalled time in which they experienced an adverse life situation and whether thislead to acceptance. Study 1: People reported that they were more likely to listen to sad music than happymusic when seeking consolation, though they preferred happy music in general. Listening to SISM (butnot self-identified happy music) when seeking consolation was associated with acceptance of both anegative situation and the associated negative emotions. Additionally, seeking to deal with emotions wasassociated with both SISM listening (for consolation) and acceptance. Study 2: Listening to SISM to get intouch with and express affect was the most important self-regulatory strategy (of six examined) throughwhich acceptance was recalled to be achieved. Experiencing adverse situations or seeking consolation, people report that listening to SISM is associated with acceptance coping (through the re-experiencing ofaffect). Implications for music therapy and theories of emotional coping are discussed.
