Nanofibrous membranes are a promising material for tailoring the properties of laminated CFRP composites by embedding them into the structure. This project aimed to understand the effect of number, position and thickness of nanofibrous modifications specifically on the damping behaviour of the resulting nano-modified CFRP composite with an epoxy matrix. An improvement of damping capacity is expected to improve a composites lifetime and fatigue resistance by prohibiting the formation of microcracks and consequently hindering delamination, it also promises a rise in comfort for a range of final products by intermission of vibration propagation and therefore diminution of noise. Electrospinning was the technique employed to produce nanofibrous membranes from a blend of polymeric solutions. SEM, WAXS and DSC were utilised to evaluate the quality of the obtained membranes before they were introduced, following a specific stacking sequence, in the production process of the laminate. A suitable curing cycle in an autoclave was applied to mend the modifications together with the matrix material, ensuring full crosslinking of the matrix and therefore finalising the production process. DMA was exercised in order to gain an understanding about the effects of the different modifications on the properties of the composite. During this investigation it became apparent that a high number of modifications of laminate CFRP composites, with an epoxy matrix, with thick rubbery nanofibrous membranes has a positive effect on the damping capacity and the temperature range the effect applies in. A suggestion for subsequent studies as well as a recommendation for the production of nano-modified CFRP structures is included at the end of this document.

Cerium oxide in catalysis can be used both as support and as a catalyst itself. Ceria catalyses many oxidations reactions, its excellent catalytic properties are due to its store oxygen storage capacity (OSC) and the reticular defects present on its surface. Different morphologies expose different reticular planes, and different reticular planes can expose different amounts of defects. The preparation method of cerium oxide can influence the surface area, morphology, and the number of defects in the sample. This work is focused on different preparation methods for gold nanoparticles supported on 1D nanostructures of cerium oxide prepared via electrospinning, their XRD, DRUV-Vis and Raman characterizations, and their catalytic performance on the oxidation reaction of HMF to FDCA.

Nowadays, one of the most ambitious challenges in soft robotics is the development of actuators capable to achieve performance comparable to skeletal muscles. Scientists have been working for decades, inspired by Nature, to mimic both their complex structure and their perfectly balanced features in terms of linear contraction, force-to-weight ratio, scalability and flexibility. The present Thesis, contextualized within the FET open Horizon 2020 project MAGNIFY, aims to develop a new family of innovative flexible actuators in the field of soft-robotics. For the realization of this actuator, a biomimetic approach has been chosen, drawing inspiration from skeletal muscle. Their hierarchical fibrous structure was mimicked employing the electrospinning technique, while the contraction of sarcomeres was designed employing chains of molecular machines, supramolecular systems capable of performing movements useful to execute specific tasks. The first part deals with the design and production of the basic unit of the artificial muscle, the artificial myofibril, consisting in a novel electrospun core-shell nanofiber, with elastomeric shell and electrically conductive core, coupled with a conductive coating, for the realization of which numerous strategies have been investigated. The second part deals instead with the integration of molecular machines (provided by the project partners) inside these artificial myofibrils, preceded by the study of several model molecules, aimed at simulating the presence of these molecular machines during the initial phases of the project. The last part concerns the realization of an electrospun multiscale hierarchical structure, aimed at reproducing the entire muscle morphology and fibrous organization. These research will be joined together in the near future like the pieces of a puzzle, recreating the artificial actuator most similar to biological muscle ever made, composed of millions of artificial myofibrils, electrically activated in which the nano-scale movement of molecular machines will be incrementally amplified to the macro-scale contraction of the artificial muscle.

Electrospinning is the most common and industrially scalable technique for the production of polymeric nanofibers. Currently, nanocomposites are drawing much interest for their excellent properties in terms of flexibility, electrical conductivity and high surface area, which enhances the interaction with the surrounding environment. The objective of this thesis was the optimization of different electrospinning setups for the production of nanostructured polymeric composites using graphene-related materials as nanofillers. Such composites were obtained using different polymers as matrix (polyamide 6, polyinylidene fluoride and polylactic acid) that were selected and combined with the appropriate reinforcements based on their properties and their interest for specific applications. Moreover, this study highlighted the possibility to tune the morphology and size of the produced nanofibers by the addition of appropriate nanofillers even in low amounts. The addition of only 0.5% of GO allowed the production of smooth nanofibers with diameters up to 75% thinner (in the case of PLA) than the ones obtained from the pristine polymer. PVdF was charged with GO to produce triboelectric materials that can be exploited in a wearable nanogenerator for the conversion of human motion energy in electrical energy. The addition of GO improved the open-circuit voltage and power-output of a generator prototype by 3.5 times. Electrospun PA6 membranes were coated with rGO using a simple two-step technique to produce conductive textiles for wearable electronic applications. The sheet resistance of the produced materials was measured in approximately 500 Ω/sq and their resistance to washing and bending was successfully tested. These materials could be exploited as strain sensors or heating elements in smart textiles. PLA was co-electrospun with GO and cellulose nanofibers to produce high-surface area and porosity mats that could be exploited for the production of functionalized highly selective adsorption membranes with low pressure drops.

The layer-by-layer technique has been used as a powerful method to produce multilayer thin films with tunable properties. When natural polymers are employed, complicated phenomena such as self-aggregation and fibrilogenesis can occur, making it more difficult to obtain and characterize high-quality films. The weak acid and base character of such materials provides multilayer systems that may differ from those found with synthetic polymers due to strong self-organization effects. Specifically, LbL films prepared with chitosan and silk fibroin (SF) often involve the deposition of fibroin fibrils, which can influence the assembly process, surface properties, and overall film functionality. In this case, one has the intriguing possibility of realizing multilayer thin films with aligned nanofibers. In this article, we propose a strategy to control fibroin fibril formation by adjusting the assembly partner. Aligned fibroin fibrils were formed when chitosan was used as the counterpart, whereas no fibrils were observed when poly(allylamine hydrochloride) (PAH) was used. Charge density, which is higher in PAH, apparently stabilizes SF aggregates on the nanometer scale, thereby preventing their organization into fibrils. The drying step between the deposition of each layer was also crucial for film formation, as it stabilizes the SF molecules. Preliminary cell studies with optimized multilayers indicated that cell viability of NIH-3T3 fibroblasts remained between 90 and 100% after surface seeding, showing the potential application of the films in the biomedical field, as coatings and functional surfaces.

Adsorbent materials and composites are quite useful for sensor development. Therefore, the aim of this work is the surface modification of particulates and/or composite formation. The material was produced by plasma polymerization of HMDS (hexamethyldisilazane) in a single step. SEM analysis shows good surface coverage of particulates with a plasma polymerized film formed by several clusters that might increase adsorption. Particles (starch. 5 5 mu m) recovered with HMDS films show good properties for retention of medium-size Organic molecules, such as dye. Thin films formed by a mixture of particles and plasma polymerized thin film HMDS species were obtained in a single step and can be used for retention of organic compounds, in liquid or gaseous phase. In this work a new method for crosslinking ultra-thin films with potential applications in sensor systems is proposed. The films were produced by layer-by-layer (LbL) assembly using a conducting polymer, poly(o-ethoxyaniline) (POEA), alternated with a thermosetting resin, novolac-type phenolformaldehyde (PF), crosslinked by a simple thermal treatment. The PF resin served as both alternating and crosslinking agents. The films were characterized by Fourier transform infrared (FTIR) and ultraviolet-visible (UV-Vis) spectroscopy, thermogravimetry (TG), desorption, doping/dedoping cycling and electrical measurements. The results showed that film architecture and crosslinking degree can be controlled by the conditions used for film deposition (number of bilayers, polymer concentration, pH, and deposition time), and crosslinking time. Moreover, this approach offers several advantages such as fast curing time and low cost, indicating that these films can be used to produce sensors with improved stability.

Poly(vinylidene fluoride-trifluoethylene) electrospun membranes were obtained from a blend of dimethylformamide (DMF) and methylethylketone (MEK) solvents. The inclusion of the MEK to the solvent system promotes a faster solvent evaporation allowing complete polymer crystallization during the jet travelling between the tip and the grounded collector. Several processing parameters were systematically changed to study their influence on fiber dimensions. Applied voltage and inner needle diameter do not have large influence on the electrospun fiber average diameter but in the fiber diameter distribution. On the other hand, the increase of the distance between the needle tip to collector results in fibers with larger average diameter. Independently on the processing conditions, all mats are produced in the electroactive phase of the polymer. Further, MC-3T3-E1cell adhesion was not inhibited by the fiber mats preparation, indicating their potential use for biomedical applications.

The influence of the dispersion of vapor grown carbon nanofibers (VGCNF) on the electrical properties of VGCNF/epoxy composites has been studied. A homogeneous dispersion of the VGCNF does not imply better electrical properties. The presence of well distributed clusters appears to be a key factor for increasing composite conductivity. It is also shown that the main conduction mechanism has an ionic nature for concentrations below the percolation threshold, while above the percolation threshold it is dominated by hopping between the fillers. Finally, using the granular system theory it is possible to explain the origin of conduction at low temperatures.

The influence of the dispersion of vapor-grown carbon nanofibers (VGCNF) on the electrical properties of VGCNF/ Epoxy composites has been studied. A homogenous dispersion of the VGCNF does not imply better electrical properties. In fact, it is demonstrated that the most simple of the tested dispersion methods results in higher conductivity, since the presence of well-distributed nanofiber clusters appears to be a key factor for increasing composite conductivity.

This work reports on the influence of polarization and morphology of electroactive poly(vinylidene fluoride), PVDF, on the biological response of myoblast cells. Non-poled, ‘‘poled +’’ and “poled-“ -PVDF were prepared in the form of films. Further, random and aligned electrospun -PVDF fiber mats were also prepared. It is demonstrated that negatively charged surfaces improve cell adhesion and proliferation and that the directional growth of the myoblast cells can be achieved by the cell culture on oriented fibers. Therefore, the potential application of electroative materials for muscle regeneration is demonstrated.

Poly(vinylidene fluoride) electrospun membranes have been prepared with different NaY zeolite contents up to 32%wt. Inclusion of zeolites induces an increase of average fiber size from ~200 nm in the pure polymer up to ~500 nm in the composite with 16%wt zeolite content. For higher filler contents, a wider distribution of fibers occurs leading to a broader size distributions between the previous fiber size values. Hydrophobicity of the membranes increases from ~115º water contact angle to ~128º with the addition of the filler and is independent on filler content, indicating a wrapping of the zeolite by the polymer. The water contact angle further increases with fiber alignment up to ~137º. Electrospun membranes are formed with ~80 % of the polymer crystalline phase in the electroactive  phase, independently on the electrospinning processing conditions or filler content. Viability of MC3T3-E1 cells on the composite membranes after 72 h of cell culture indicates the suitability of the membranes for tissue engineering applications.

Deuterium NMR was used to investigate the orientational order in a composite cellulosic formed by liquid crystalline acetoxypropylcellulose (A PC) and demented nematic 4'-penty1-4-cyanobiphenyl (5CB-4 alpha d(2)) with the per centage of 85% A PC by weight Three forms of the composite including electro spun microfibers, thin film and bulk samples were analyzed The NMR results initially suggest two distinct scenarios, one whet e the 503-alpha d(2), is confined to small droplets with dimensions smaller than the magnetic coherence length and the other where the 503-alpha d(2) molecules arc aligned with the A PC network chains Polarized optical microscopy (POW from thin film samples along with all the NMR results show the presence of 5CB-alpha d(2) droplets in the composite systems with a nematic wetting layer at the APC-5CB-alpha d(2) interface that experiences and order disorder transition driven by the polymer network N-I transition The characterization of the APC network I-N transition shows a pronounced subcritical behavior within a heterogeneity scenario.

A nanohybrid electrochemical transducer surface was developed using carbon and gold nanomaterials. The strategy relayed on casting multiwalled carbon nanotubes or carbon nanofibers onto a screen-printed carbon electrode surface, followed by in situ generation of gold nanoparticles by electrochemical deposition of ionic gold, in a reproducible manner. These transducers, so fabricated, were characterized using both electrochemical and microscopic techniques. Biofunctionality was evaluated using the streptavidin-biotin interaction system as the biological reaction model. These platforms allow to achieve low detection limits (in the order of pmoles), are reproducible and stable at least for a month after their preparation, being a perfect candidate to be used as transducer of different sensor devices.
