Ultrafast photoinduced absorption by infrared-active vibrational modes is used to detect charged solitons in oriented trans-polyacetylene. Soliton pairs are photogenerated within similar to250 fs with quantum efficiencies (phi(ch)) approaching unity. The excitation spectrum of phi(ch) shows an onset at similar to1.0 eV with a weak photon energy dependence up to 4.7 eV. The results are consistent with the ultrafast soliton formation predicted by Su and Schrieffer and with the Su-Scrieffer-Heeger threshold of 2E(g)/pi for soliton pair production. The recombination dynamics of charged solitons is very fast (initial decay<1 ps) with a modest dependence on the pump photon energy.

Ultrafast photoinduced absorption by IRAV modes is used to detect charged solitons in oriented polyacetylene. We find that soliton pairs are photogenerated within our time resolution of similar to250 fs with similar to100% quantum efficiency (phi(ch)). The excitation spectrum of phi(ch) shows an onset at 1.0 eV, with a weak photon energy dependence up to 4.7 eV. These results agree with the ultrafast soliton formation predicted by Su and Schrieffer and with the SSH threshold of 2E(g)/pi for soliton pair production.

Extensive systematizations of theoretical and experimental nuclear densities and of optical potential strengths extracted from heavy-ion elastic scattering data analyses at low and intermediate energies are presented. The energy dependence of the nuclear potential is accounted for within a model based on the nonlocal nature of the interaction. The systematics indicates that the heavy-ion nuclear potential can be described in a simple global way through a double-folding shape, which basically depends only on the density of nucleons of the partners in the collision. The possibility of extracting information about the nucleon-nucleon interaction from the heavy-ion potential is investigated.

Nonlocal interactions are an intrinsically quantum phenomenon. In this work we point out that, in the context of heavy ions, such interactions can be studied through the refractive elastic scattering of these systems at intermediate energies. We show that most of the observed energy dependence of the local equivalent bare potential arises from the exchange nonlocality. The nonlocality parameter extracted from the data was found to be very close to the one obtained from folding models. The effective mass of the colliding, heavy-ion, system was found to be close to the nucleon effective mass in nuclear matter.

The pCT deals with relatively thick targets like the human head or trunk. Thus, the fidelity of pCT as a tool for proton therapy planning depends on the accuracy of physical formulas used for proton interaction with thick absorbers. Although the actual overall accuracy of the proton stopping power in the Bethe-Bloch domain is about 1%, the analytical calculations and the Monte Carlo simulations with codes like TRIM/SRIM, MCNPX and GEANT4 do not agreed with each other. A tentative to validate the codes against experimental data for thick absorbers bring some difficulties: only a few data is available and the existing data sets have been acquired at different initial proton energies, and for different absorber materials. In this work we compare the results of our Monte Carlo simulations with existing experimental data in terms of reduced calibration curve, i.e. the range - energy dependence normalized on the range scale by the full projected CSDA range for given initial proton energy in a given material, taken from the NIST PSTAR database, and on the final proton energy scale - by the given initial energy of protons. This approach is almost energy and material independent. The results of our analysis are important for pCT development because the contradictions observed at arbitrary low initial proton energies could be easily scaled now to typical pCT energies. © 2010 American Institute of Physics.

In this paper, the main features of Raman spectroscopy, one of the first choice methods in the study of polymorphism in pharmaceuticals, are presented taking chlorpropamide as a case of study. The antidiabetic drug chlorpropamide (1-[4-chlorobenzenesulphonyl]-3-propyl urea), which belongs to the sulfonylurea class, is known to exhibit, at least, six polymorphic phases. These forms are characterized not only by variations in their molecular packing but also in their molecular conformation. In this study, the polymorphism of chlorpropamide is discussed on the basis of Raman scattering measurements and quantum mechanical calculations. The main spectroscopic features that fingerprint the crystalline forms are correlated with the corresponding crystalline structures. Using a theoretical approach on the energy dependence of the conformers, simulated molecular torsion angles are plotted versus the formation energy, which provides a satisfactory agreement between the torsion angles at the energy minima and the experimental values observed in the different solid forms of chlorpropamide. A systematic study is presented for centrality, transverse momentum (p(T)), and pseudorapidity (eta) dependence of the inclusive charged hadron elliptic flow (v(2)) at midrapidity (vertical bar eta vertical bar < 1.0) in Au + Au collisions at root s(NN) = 7.7, 11.5, 19.6, 27, and 39 GeV. The results obtained with different methods, including correlations with the event plane reconstructed in a region separated by a large pseudorapidity gap and four-particle cumulants (v(2){4}), are presented to investigate nonflow correlations and v(2) fluctuations. We observe that the difference between v(2){2} and v(2){4} is smaller at the lower collision energies. Values of v(2), scaled by the initial coordinate space eccentricity, v(2)/epsilon, as a function of p(T) are larger in more central collisions, suggesting stronger collective flow develops in more central collisions, similar to the results at higher collision energies. These results are compared to measurements at higher energies at the Relativistic Heavy Ion Collider (root s(NN) = 62.4 and 200 GeV) and at the Large Hadron Collider (Pb + Pb collisions at root s(NN) = 2.76 TeV). The v(2)(pT) values for fixed pT rise with increasing collision energy within the pT range studied (<2 GeV/c). A comparison to viscous hydrodynamic simulations is made to potentially help understand the energy dependence of v(2)(pT). We also compare the v(2) results to UrQMD and AMPT transport model calculations, and physics implications on the dominance of partonic versus hadronic phases in the system created at beam energy scan energies are discussed.

Radiation dose assessment is essential for several medical treatments and diagnostic procedures. In this context, nanotechnology has been used in the development of improved radiation sensors, with higher sensitivity as well as smaller sizes and energy dependence. This paper deals with the synthesis and characterization of gold/alanine nanocomposites with varying mass percentage of gold, for application as radiation sensors. Alanine is an excellent stabilizing agent for gold nanoparticles because the size of the nanoparticles does not augment with increasing mass percentage of gold, as evidenced by UV-vis spectroscopy, dynamic light scattering, and transmission electron microscopy. X-ray diffraction patterns suggest that the alanine crystalline orientation undergoes alterations upon the addition of gold nanoparticles. Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy indicates that there is interaction between the gold nanoparticles and the amine group of the alanine molecules, which may be the reason for the enhanced stability of the nanocomposite. The application of the nanocomposites as radiation detectors was evaluated by the electron spin resonance technique. The sensitivity is improved almost 3 times in the case of the nanocomposite containing 3% (w/w) gold, so it can be easily tuned by changing the amount of gold nanoparticles in the nanocomposites, without the size of the nanoparticles influencing the radiation absorption. In conclusion, the featured properties, such as homogeneity, nanoparticle size stability, and enhanced sensitivity, make these nanocomposites potential candidates for the construction of small-sized radiation sensors with tunable sensitivity for application in several medical procedures.

A detailed characterization of a X-ray Si(Li) detector was performed to obtain the energy dependence of efficiency in the photon energy range of 6.4 - 59.5 keV. which was measured and reproduced by Monte Carlo (MC) simulations. Significant discrepancies between MC and experimental values were found when lhe manufacturer parameters of lhe detector were used in lhe simulation. A complete Computerized Tomagraphy (CT) detector scan allowed to find the correct crystal dimensions and position inside the capsule. The computed efficiencies with the resulting detector model differed with the measured values no more than 10% in most of the energy range.

To interpret the mean depth of cosmic ray air shower maximum and its dispersion, we parametrize those two observables as functions of the rst two moments of the lnA distribution. We examine the goodness of this simple method through simulations of test mass distributions. The application of the parameterization to Pierre Auger Observatory data allows one to study the energy dependence of the mean lnA and of its variance under the assumption of selected hadronic interaction models. We discuss possible implications of these dependences in term of interaction models and astrophysical cosmic ray sources.

he physics program of the NA61/SHINE (SHINE = SPS Heavy Ion and Neutrino Experiment) experiment at the CERN SPS consists of three subjects. In the first stage of data taking (2007-2009) measurements of hadron production in hadron-nucleus interactions needed for neutrino (T2K) and cosmic-ray (Pierre Auger and KASCADE) experiments will be performed. In the second stage (2009-2010) hadron production in proton-proton and proton-nucleus interactions needed as reference data for a better understanding of nucleus-nucleus reactions will be studied. In the third stage (2009-2013) energy dependence of hadron production properties will be measured in p+p, p+Pb interactions and nucleus-nucleus collisions, with the aim to identify the properties of the onset of deconfinement and find evidence for the critical point of strongly interacting matter. The NA61 experiment was approved at CERN in June 2007. The first pilot run was performed during October 2007. Calibrations of all detector components have been performed successfully and preliminary uncorrected spectra have been obtained. High quality of track reconstruction and particle identification similar to NA49 has been achieved. The data and new detailed simulations confirm that the NA61 detector acceptance and particle identification capabilities cover the phase space required by the T2K experiment. This document reports on the progress made in the calibration and analysis of the 2007 data.

In the recently proposed framework of hard pion chiral perturbation theory, the leading chiral logarithms are predicted to factorize with respect to the energy dependence in the chiral limit. We have scrutinized this assumption in the case of vector and scalar pion form factors FV;S(s) by means of standard chiral perturbation theory and dispersion relations. We show that this factorization property is valid for the elastic contribution to the dispersion integrals for FV;S(s) but it is violated starting at three loops when the inelastic four-pion contributions arise.

In external beam radiation therapy, it is imperative that the prescribed dose is administered to the correct location and in the correct amount. Though several ex vivo methods of quality assurance are currently employed to achieve this goal, verifying that the correct dose is received within the patient in situ is impossible without the capability of measuring dose inside the patient. Recently, a method of measuring dose delivered within the patient has been developed, an implantable MOSFET dosimeter. This dosimeter is implanted within the patient and records the dose received. Since the dosimeter is implanted in the patient, it could serve a dual function as a fiducial marker for image guided radiation therapy (IGRT) treatment if it could be modified to be visible on x-rays. In this study, modifications to the MOSFET dosimeter were made to increase its visibility for IGRT treatment. To test whether the modifications hindered the dosimeter’s ability to accurately measure and transmit dose information, the energy dependence, angular dependence and wireless read range of the modified dosimeter were measured and compared to unmodified dosimeters. It was found that the modified dosimeter performed as well as the unmodified dosimeter while also being suitable for use as a fiducial marker for IGRT treatment.
