Based on the molecular dynamics (MD) method, the single-crystalline copper nanowire with different surface defects is investigated through tension simulation. For comparison, the MD tension simulations of perfect nanowire are firstly carried out under different temperatures, strain rates, and sizes. It has concluded that the surface-volume ratio significantly affects the mechanical properties of nanowire. The surface defects on nanowires are then systematically studied in considering different defect orientation and distribution. It is found that the Young’s modulus is insensitive of surface defects. However, the yield strength and yield point show a significant decrease due to the different defects. Different defects are observed to serve as a dislocation source.

Background: HIV-1 Pr55gag virus-like particles (VLPs) expressed by baculovirus in insect cells are considered to be a very promising HIV-1 vaccine candidate, as they have been shown to elicit broad cellular immune responses when tested in animals, particularly when used as a boost to DNA or BCG vaccines. However, it is important for the VLPs to retain their structure for them to be fully functional and effective. The medium in which the VLPs are formulated and the temperature at which they are stored are two important factors affecting their stability. FINDINGS We describe the screening of 3 different readily available formulation media (sorbitol, sucrose and trehalose) for their ability to stabilise HIV-1 Pr55gag VLPs during prolonged storage. Transmission electron microscopy (TEM) was done on VLPs stored at two different concentrations of the media at three different temperatures (4[degree sign]C, --20[degree sign]C and -70[degree sign]C) over different time periods, and the appearance of the VLPs was compared. VLPs stored in 15% trehalose at -70[degree sign]C retained their original appearance the most effectively over a period of 12 months. VLPs stored in 5% trehalose, sorbitol or sucrose were not all intact even after 1 month storage at the temperatures tested. In addition, we showed that VLPs stored under these conditions were able to be frozen and re-thawed twice before showing changes in their appearance. Conclusions Although the inclusion of other analytical tools are essential to validate these preliminary findings, storage in 15% trehalose at -70[degree sign]C for 12 months is most effective in retaining VLP stability.

Catalytic decomposition is a very attractive way to convert tar components into H2, CO and other useful chemicals. The performance of Fe3Ni8/PG (palygorskite, PG) reduced in hydrogen at different temperatures for the catalytic decomposition of benzene has been assessed. Benzene was used as the model biomass tar. The effects of calcination atmosphere, temperatures and benzene concentration on catalytic cracking of benzene were measured. The results of XRD (X-Ray Diffraction), TEM (Transmission Electron Microscope), TPR (Temperature Program Reduction), TPSR (Temperature Program Surface Reduction), TC (Total Carbon), the reactivity component and reaction mechanism over Fe3Ni8/PG for catalytic cracking of benzene are discussed. The results showed particles of awaruite (Fe, Ni) about 2–30 nm were found on the surface of palygorskite by TEM when the calcination temperature was 600 °C. Particles with size smaller than 30 nm were obtained on all prepared Fe3Ni8/PG catalysts as shown by XRD. The nanoparticles proved to be the reactive component for catalytic cracking of benzene and the increase of active particle size caused the decrease in the reactivity of Fe3Ni8/PG. Fe3Ni8/PG annealed in hydrogen at 600 °C was proved to have the best reactivity in experiments (45% hydrogen yield). High concentration benzene (448 g/m3) accelerated the formation of carbon deposition. However, iron oxide decreases carbon deposition and increases the stability of catalyst for catalytic cracking of benzene. The application of Fe3Ni8/PG catalysts was proved a very effective catalyst for the catalytic cracking of benzene.

In this paper, we report the development of novel Pt/nanostructured RuO2/SiC Schottky diode based sensors for hydrogen gas applications. The nanostructured ruthenium oxide thin films were deposited on SiC substrates using radio frequency sputtering technique. Scanning electron microscopy revealed the sputtered RuO2 layer consists of nano-cubular structures with dimensions ranging between 10 and 50 nm. X-ray diffraction confirmed the presence of tetragonal ruthenium (IV) oxide, with preferred orientation along the (101) lattice plane. The current-voltage characteristics of the sensors were investigated towards hydrogen gas in synthetic air at different temperatures from 25 °C to 240 °C. The dynamic responses of the sensors were studied at an optimum temperature of 240 °C and a voltage shift of 304 mV was recorded toward 1% hydrogen gas.

This paper presents material and gas sensing properties of Pt/SnO2 nanowires/SiC metal oxide semiconductor devices towards hydrogen. The SnO2 nanowires were deposited onto the SiC substrates by vapour-liquid-solid growth mechanism. The material properties of the sensors were investigated using scanning electron microscopy, transmission electron microscopy and X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy. The current-voltage characteristics have been analysed. The effective change in the barrier height for 1% hydrogen was found to be 142.91 meV. The dynamic response of the sensors towards hydrogen at different temperatures has also been studied. At 530°C, voltage shift of 310 mV for 1% hydrogen was observed.

We developed Pt/tantalum oxide (Ta2O5) Schottky diodes for hydrogen sensing applications. Thin layer (4 nm) of Ta2O5 was deposited on silicon (Si) and silicon carbide (SiC) substrates using the radio frequency sputtering technique. We compared the performance of these sensors at different temperatures of 100 °C and 150 °C. At these operating temperatures, the sensor based on SiC exhibited a larger sensitivity, whilst the sensor based on Si exhibited a faster response toward hydrogen gas. We discussed herein, the experimental results obtained for these Pt/Ta2O5 based Schottky diodes exhibited that they are promising candidates for hydrogen sensing applications.

Synthetic goethite and thermally treated goethite at different temperatures were used to remove phosphate from sewage. The effect of annealing temperature on phosphate removal over time was investigated. X-ray diffraction(XRD), transmission electron microscopy (TEM), N2 adsorption and desorption (BET), and infrared emission spectrum (FT-IES) were utilized to characterize the phase, morphology, specific surface area, pore distribution, and the surface groups of samples. The results show that annealed products of goethite at temperatures over 250 °C are hematite with the similar morphology as the original goethite with different hydroxyl groups and surface area. Increasing temperature causes the decrease in hydroxyl groups, consequential increase in surface area at first and then experiences a decrease (14.8–110.4–12.6 m2/g) and the subsequent formation of nanoscale pores. The variation rate of hydroxyl groups and surface area based on FT-IES and BET, respectively, are used to evaluate the effect of annealing temperature on phosphate removal. By using all of the characterization techniques, it is concluded that the changes of phosphate removal basically result from the total variation rate between hydroxyl groups and surface area.

With a hexagonal monolayer network of carbon atoms, graphene has demonstrated exceptional electrical 22 and mechanical properties. In this work, the fracture of graphene sheets with Stone–Wales type defects and vacancies were investigated using molecular dynamics simulations at different temperatures. The initiation of defects via bond rotation was also investigated. The results indicate that the defects and vacancies can cause significant strength loss in graphene. The fracture strength of graphene is also affected by temperature and loading directions. The simulation results were compared with the prediction from the quantized fracture mechanics.

One DDT-contaminated soil and two uncontaminated soils were used to enumerate DDT-resistant microbes (bacteria, actinomycetes and fungi) by using soil dilution agar plates in media either with 150 μg DDT ml -1 or without DDT at different temperatures (25, 37 and 55°C). Microbial populations in this study were significantly (p<0.001) affected by DDT in the growth medium. However, the numbers of microbes in long-term contaminated and uncontaminated soils were similar, presumably indicating that DDT-resistant microbes had developed over a long time exposure. The tolerance of isolated soil microbes to DDT varied in the order fungi>actinomycetes>bacteria. Bacteria from contaminated soil were more resistant to DDT than bacteria from uncontaminated soils. Microbes isolated at different temperatures also demonstrated varying degrees of DDT resistance. For example, bacteria and actinomycetes isolated at all incubation temperatures were sensitive to DDT. Conversely fungi isolated at all temperatures were unaffected by DDT.

Nitrogenated carbon nanotips (NCNTPs) have been synthesized using customized plasma-enhanced hot filament chemical vapor deposition. The morphological, structural, and photoluminescent properties of the NCNTPs are investigated using scanning and transmission electron microscopy, X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy, Raman spectroscopy, and photoluminescence spectroscopy. The photoluminescence measurements show that the NCNTPs predominantly emit a green band at room temperature while strong blue emission is generated at 77 K. It is shown that these very different emission behaviors are related to the change of the optical band-gap and the concentration of the paramagnetic defects of the carbon nanotips. The studies shed light on the controversies on the photoluminescence mechanisms of carbon-based amorphous films measured at different temperatures. The relevance of the results to the use of nitrogenated carbon nanotips in light-emitting optoelectronic devices is discussed.

Graphyne is an allotrope of graphene. The mechanical properties of graphynes (α-, β-, γ- and 6,6,12-graphynes) under uniaxial tension deformation at different temperatures and strain rates are studied using molecular dynamics simulations. It is found that graphynes are more sensitive to temperature changes than graphene in terms of fracture strength and Young's modulus. The temperature sensitivity of the different graphynes is proportionally related to the percentage of acetylenic linkages in their structures, with the α-graphyne (having 100% of acetylenic linkages) being most sensitive to temperature. For the same graphyne, temperature exerts a more pronounced effect on the Young's modulus than fracture strength, which is different from that of graphene. The mechanical properties of graphynes are also sensitive to strain rate, in particular at higher temperatures.

Isolated and purified organosolv eucalyptus wood lignin was depolymerized at different temperatures with and without mesostructured silica catalysts (i.e., SBA-15, MCM-41, ZrO2-SBA-15 and ZrO2-MCM-41). It was found that at 300 oC for 1 h with a solid/liquid ratio of 0.0175/1 (w/v), the SBA-15 catalyst with high acidity gave the highest syringol yield of 23.0% in a methanol/water mixture (50/50, wt/wt). Doping with ZrO2 over these catalysts did not increase syringol yield, but increased the total amount of solid residue. Gas chromatography-mass spectrometry (GC-MS) also identified other main phenolic compounds such as 1-(4-hydroxy-3,5-dimethoxyphenyl)-ethanone, 1,2-benzenediol, and 4-hydroxy-3,5-dimethoxy-benzaldehyde. Analysis of the lignin residues with Fourier transform-Infrared spectroscopy (FT-IR) indicated decreases in the absorption bands intensities of OH group, C-O stretching of syringyl ring and aromatic C-H deformation of syringol unit, and an increase in band intensities associated with the guaiacyl ring, confirming the type of products formed.

Gac fruits were physically measured and stored under ambient conditions for up to 2 weeks to observe changes in carotenoid contents (lycopene and beta carotene) in its aril. Initial concentrations in the aril of lycopene were from 2.378 mg/g fresh weight (FW) to 3.728 mg/g FW and those of beta carotene were from 0.257 to 0.379 mg/g FW. Carotenoid concentrations in the aril remained stable after 1 week but sharply declined after 2 weeks of storage. Gac oil, pressed from gac aril, has similar concentrations of lycopene and beta carotene (2.436 and 2.592 mg/g, respectively). Oil was treated with 0.02% of butylated hydroxytoluene, or with a stream of nitrogen or untreated then stored in the dark for up to 15 or 19 weeks under different temperatures (5 °C, ambient, 45 and 60 °C). Lycopene and beta carotene in control gac oil degraded following the first-order kinetic model. The degradation rate of lycopene and beta carotene in the treated oil samples were lower than that in the control oil but the first-order kinetic was not always followed. However, both lycopene and beta carotene degraded quickly in gac oil with the first-order kinetic under high temperature conditions (45 and 60 °C) regardless of the treatments used. © 2009 Elsevier Ltd. The development of a microstructure in 304L stainless steel during industrial hot-forming operations, including press forging (mean strain rate of 0.15 s(-1)), rolling/extrusion (2-5 s(-1)), and hammer forging (100 s(-1)) at different temperatures in the range 600-1200 degrees C, was studied with a view to validating the predictions of the processing map. The results have shown that excellent correlation exists between the regimes exhibited by the map and the product microstructures. 304L stainless steel exhibits instability bands when hammer forged at temperatures below 1100 degrees C, rolled/extruded below 1000 degrees C, or press forged below 800 degrees C. All of these conditions must be avoided in mechanical processing of the material. On the other hand, ideally, the material may be rolled, extruded, or press forged at 1200 degrees C to obtain a defect-free microstructure.

In the present investigation, ion nitriding of Maraging steel (250 grade) has been carried out at three different temperatures i.e., at 435 degrees C, 450 degrees C and 465 degrees C for 10 h duration in order to achieve good wear resistance along with high strength required for the slat track component of aircraft. The microstructure of the base material and the nitrided layer was examined by optical and scanning electron microscope, and various phases present were determined by X-ray diffraction. Various properties, such as, hardness, case depth, tensile, impact, fatigue properties and corrosion resistance were investigated for both un-nitrided and ion-nitrided materials. It is observed that the microstructure of the core material remains unaltered and Fe4N is formed in the hardened surface layer after ion nitriding at all the three temperatures employed. Surface hardness increases substantially after ion nitriding. Surface hardness remains almost the same but case depth increases with the increase in ion nitriding temperature due to greater diffusivity at higher temperatures. Tensile strength, fatigue strength and corrosion resistance are improved but ductility and energy absorbed in impact test decrease on ion nitriding. These results are explained on the basis of microstructural observations. The properties obtained after ion nitriding at 450 degrees C for 10 h are found to be optimum when compared to the other two ion nitriding temperatures.
