Estuarine systems play an important role in the retention of toxic trace elements owing to the affinity of these elements with particles dissolved in water. This work presents the use of a voltammetric sensor to monitor heavy metal (Zn (II), Cd(II) and Pb (II)) concentrations in the Cananeia-Iguape Estuarine-Lagoon region (Sao Paulo State, Brazil). Lower concentrations were found in the Southern estuarine system (Cananeia City) and increased concentrations observed in the Northern sector (Iguape City) were promoted by anthropogenic activities, with particular influence from the historical introduction of mining wastes and inputs from agricultural, industrial and domestic effluents. The proposed method is reliable, inexpensive and fast, can simultaneously provide information on the concentration of these metallic ions and can be easily used for field measurements aboard oceanographic ships.

Several types of alumina were synthesized from sodium aluminate (NaAlO2) by precipitation with sulfuric acid (H2SO4) and subsequently calcination at 500 degrees C to obtain gamma-Al2O3. The precursor aluminate was derived from aluminum scrap. The various gamma-Al2O3 synthesized were characterized by Fourier-transform infrared spectroscopy (FTIR), X-ray diffraction (XRD), adsorption-desorption of N-2 (S-BET) and scanning electron microscopy (SEM). XRD revealed that distinct phases of Al2O3 were formed during thermal treatment. Moreover, it was observed that conditions of synthesis (pH, aging time and temperature) strongly affect the physicochemical properties of the alumina. A high-surface-area alumina (371 m(2) g(-1)) was synthesized under mild conditions, from inexpensive raw materials. These aluminas were tested for the adsorption of Cd(II), Zn(II) and Pb(II) from aqueous solution at toxic metal concentrations, and isotherms were determined. (C) 2012 Elsevier B.V. To date, the effects of ocean acidification on toxic metals accumulation and the underlying molecular mechanism remains unknown in marine bivalve species. In the present study, the effects of the realistic future ocean pCO2 levels on the cadmium (Cd) accumulation in the gills, mantle and adductor muscles of three bivalve species, Mytilus edulis, Tegillarca granosa, and Meretrix meretrix, were investigated. The results obtained suggested that all species tested accumulated significantly higher Cd (p<0.05) in the CO2 acidified seawater during the 30 days experiment and the health risk of Cd (based on the estimated target hazard quotients, THQ) via consumption of M. meretrix at pH 7.8 and 7.4 significantly increased 1.21 and 1.32 times respectively, suggesting a potential threat to seafood safety. The ocean acidification-induced increase in Cd accumulation may have occurred due to (i) the ocean acidification increased the concentration of Cd and the Cd2+/Ca2+ in the seawater, which in turn increased the Cd influx through Ca channel; (ii) the acidified seawater may have brought about epithelia damage, resulting in easier Cd penetration; and (iii) ocean acidification hampered Cd exclusion.

Chemical analyzes show that interstitial waters from ore-bearing bottom sediments of the Atlantis II and Discovery Deeps are enriched in Fe, Mn, Cu, Ni, Co, Zn, Pb, and Cd compared to sea water. Enrichment factors of these trace elements in the interstitial waters of the Atlantis II Deep relative to the sea water vary within the following ranges: for Fe from 100 to 7000, for Mn from 19047 to 32738, for Zn from 500 to 1600, for Pb from 78333 to 190000, for Cu from 107 to 654. Comparison of average weighted concentrations of Fe, Mn, Zn, Pb, Cu, Ni in the bottom sediments and the interstitial waters of the Atlantis II Deep indicates common regularities and good relationship in distribution of these elements along sediment cores. Differences in concentrations and distribution of the studied trace elements in the interstitial waters of the Atlantis II and Discovery Deeps result from different chemical compositions of hydrothermal fluids entering these deeps.

The first Zn(II)-translocating P-type ATPase has been identified as the product of o732, a potential gene identified in the sequencing of the Escherichia coli genome. This gene, termed zntA, was disrupted by insertion of a kanamycin gene through homologous recombination. The mutant strain exhibited hypersensitivity to zinc and cadmium salts but not salts of other metals, suggesting a role in zinc homeostasis in E. coli. Everted membrane vesicles from a wild-type strain accumulated 65Zn(II) and 109Cd(II) by using ATP as an energy source. Transport was sensitive to vanadate, an inhibitor of P-type ATPases. Membrane vesicles from the zntA∷kan strain did not accumulate those metal ions. Both the sensitive phenotype and transport defect of the mutant were complemented by expression of zntA on a plasmid.

Organic-inorganic nanocomposites combine unique properties of both the constituents in one material. Among this group of materials, clay based as well as ZnO, TiO2 nanocomposites have been found to have diverse applications. Optoelectronic devices require polymerinorganic systems to meet certain desired properties. Dielectric properties of conventional polymers like poly(ethylene-co-vinyl acetate) (EVA) and polystyrene (PS) may also be tailor tuned with the incorporation of inorganic fillers in very small amounts. Electrical conductivity and surface resistivity of polymer matrices are found to improve with inorganic nanofillers. II-VI semiconductors and their nano materials have attracted material scientists because of their unique optical properties of photoluminescence, UV photodetection and light induced conductivity. Cadmium selenide (CdSe), zinc selenide (ZnSe) and zinc oxide (ZnO) are some of the most promising members of the IIVI semiconductor family, used in light-emitting diodes, nanosensors, non-linear optical (NLO) absorption etc. EVA and PS materials were selected as the matrices in the present study because they are commercially used polymers and have not been the subject of research for opto-electronic properties with semiconductor nanomaterials
