Resumo:
Within the framework of the third solar cell generation some new ideas to enlarge the spectral response of the solar cells toward the infrared have been proposed. Among them the inclusion of an Intermediate Band (IB) seems to be very promising. This paper will deal with one of the ways to generate the IB namely the deep level center approach. We will discuss not only its existence but also the carriers lifetime recovery which is necessary to obtain the expected increase of the solar cell efficiency.

This paper presents videogames as a very useful tool in high studies with respect to mathematical matters. It describes the implementation of a videogame developed by its authors which makes it possible for students to reinforce mathematical concepts in a motivating environment. With this work we intend to contribute to the process of engaging a bigger number of university teaching professionals and researchers in the use of serious games and the study of their theoretical frameworks, design, development and application of scientific education. With this idea the authors of the present paper have created and developed the videogame The Math Castle which consists in a series of tests through which various aspects of Mathematics are dealt with, especially in the areas of Discrete Mathematics, which due to its nature can be particularly well adapted to this kind of activity, Analysis or Geometry. In this paper there lies a complete description of the game developed and the results obtained with it.

3D Modular construction is poorly known and scarcely published in technical literature. In spite of that there are an increasing number of manufacturers offering their products in different countries. This method has largely evolved from early examples such as the American Gold Rush prefabrication in the nineteenth century, the Sears precut homes or Voisins prototypes for modular homes, to the end of the first half of the twentieth century. In this period a non negligible number of attempts in 3D modular construction have been carried out, ranging from theoretical proposals to several hundred or thousand units produced. Selected examples of modular architecture will be analyses in order to illustrate its technical evolution, concerning materials, structure, transportation and on site assembly. Success and failure factors of the different systems will be discussed. Conclusions about building criteria shown in them and their applicability in current architecture will be drawn.

Total Ionization Dose (TID) is traditionally measured by radiation sensitive FETs (RADFETs) that require a radiation hardened Analog-to-Digital Converter (ADC) stage. This work introduces a TID sensor based on a delay path whose propagation time is sensitive to the absorbed radiation. It presents the following advantages: it is a digital sensor able to be integrated in CMOS circuits and programmable systems such as FPGAs; it has a configurable sensitivity that allows to use this device for radiation doses ranging from very low to relatively high levels; its interface helps to integrate this sensor in a multidisciplinary sensor network; it is self-timed, hence it does not need a clock signal that can degrade its accuracy. The sensor has been prototyped in a 0.35m technology, has an area of 0.047mm2, of which 22% is dedicated to measuring radiation, and an energy per conversion of 463pJ. Experimental irradiation tests have validated the correct response of the proposed TID sensor.

Emergency management is one of the key aspects within the day-to-day operation procedures in a highway. Efficiency in the overall response in case of an incident is paramount in reducing the consequences of any incident. However, the approach of highway operators to the issue of incident management is still usually far from a systematic, standardized way. This paper attempts to address the issue and provide several hints on why this happens, and a proposal on how the situation could be overcome. An introduction to a performance based approach to a general system specification will be described, and then applied to a particular road emergency management task. A real testbed has been implemented to show the validity of the proposed approach. Ad-hoc sensors (one camera and one laser scanner) were efficiently deployed to acquire data, and advanced fusion techniques applied at the processing stage to reach the specific user requirements in terms of functionality, flexibility and accuracy.

Frequency selective surfaces (FSS) and reflect/trasmitarrays are mostly designed on the basis ot optimization using an electromagnetic simulator. That is a time consuming method and some decisions have to be taken using simply intuition. The use of equivalent circuits of the scatterers selected for the design allows the substitution of the intuition and most part of the optimization process by the application of the classic rules of filter design. This communication presents all the steps necessary to obtain the equivalent circuit of different square scatterers in a periodic lattice and to implement the desired FSS frequency behaviour calculating the number of layers and the dimensions of the periodic cells. Several examples are included to evaluate the results.

In this work we review some earlier distributed algorithms developed by the authors and collaborators, which are based on two different approaches, namely, distributed moment estimation and distributed stochastic approximations. We show applications of these algorithms on image compression, linear classification and stochastic optimal control. In all cases, the benefit of cooperation is clear: even when the nodes have access to small portions of the data, by exchanging their estimates, they achieve the same performance as that of a centralized architecture, which would gather all the data from all the nodes.

Legumes establish a root-nodule symbiosis with soil bacteria collectively known as rhizobia. This symbiosis allows legumes to benefit from the nitrogen fixation capabilities of rhizobia and thus to grow in the absence of any fixed nitrogen source. This is especially relevant for Agriculture, where intensive plant growth depletes soils of useable, fixed nitrogen sources. One of the main features of the root nodule symbiosis is its specificity. Different rhizobia are able to nodulate different legumes. Rhizobium leguminosarum bv. viciae is able to establish an effective symbiosis with four different plant genera (Pisum, Lens, Vicia, Lathyrus), and any given isolate will nodulate any of the four plant genera. A population genomics study with rhizobia isolated from P. sativum, L. culinaris, V. sativa or V. faba, all originating in the same soil, showed that plants select specific genotypes from those available in that soil. This was demonstrated at the genome-wide level, but also for specific genes. Accelerated mesocosm studies with successive plant cultures provided additional evidence on this plant selection and on the nature of the genotypes selected. Finally, representatives from the major rhizobial genotypes isolated from these plants allowed characterization of the size and nature of the respective pangenome and specific genome compartments. These were compared to the different genotypes ?symbiotic and non-symbiotic?present in rhizobial populations isolated directly from the soil without plant intervention.

Rhizobium leguminosarum bv viciae (Rlv) is a soil bacterium able to establish specific root-nodule symbioses with legumes of four different genera: Pisum, Vicia, Lens and Lathyrus. Rlv isolates from nodules of any of these legumes can nodulate any of them; however, it has been shown that plants select specific rhizobial genotypes from those present in the soil (1,2). We have previously shown this at the genomic level by following a population genomics approach. Pool genomic sequences from 100 isolates from each of four plant species: P. sativum, L. culinaris, V. faba and V. sativa, show different, specific profiles at the single nucleotide polymorphism (SNP) level for relevant genes. In this work, the extent of Rlv selection from a well-characterized soil population by different legume plant hosts: P. sativum, L. culinaris, V. faba and V. sativa, after a medium-term mesocosm study is described. Direct soil isolates from each of these mesocosm studies have been tested for specific rhizobial genes (glnII and fnrN) and symbiotic genes (nodC and nifH). Different populations were characterized further by Sanger sequencing of both the rpoB phylogenetic marker gene and the symbiotic genes nodC and nifH. The distribution and size of the rhizobial population for each legume host showed changes during the medium-term mesocosm study. Particularly, a non-symbiotic group of rhizobia was enriched by all four hosts, in contrast to the symbiotic rhizobia profile, which was specific for each legume plant host.

The study of the Upper Jurassic-Lower Cretaceous deposits (Higueruelas, Villar del Arzobispo and Aldea de Corts Formations) of the South Iberian Basin (NW Valencia, Spain) reveals new stratigraphic and sedimentological data, which have significant implications on the stratigraphic framework, depositional environments and age of these units. Moreover, these new data encourage revising the previously proposed stratigraphic correlations between the studied units and those deposited in adjacent areas of the Iberian Basin. The Higueruelas Fm was deposited in a mid-inner carbonate platform where oncolitic bars migrated by the action of storms and where oncoid production progressively decreased towards the uppermost part of the unit. The overlying Villar del Arzobispo Fm has been traditionally interpreted as an inner platform-lagoon evolving into a tidal-flat. Here it is interpreted as an inner-carbonate platform affected by storms, where oolitic shoals protected a lagoon, which had siliciclastic inputs from the continent. The Aldea de Corts Fm has been previously interpreted as a lagoon surrounded by tidal-flats and fluvial-deltaic plains. Here it is reinterpreted as a coastal wetland where siliciclastic muddy deposits interacted with shallow fresh to marine water bodies, aeolian dunes and continental siliciclastic inputs. The contact between the Higueruelas and Villar del Arzobispo Fms, classically defined as gradual, is interpreted here as gradual and rapid, because the transition between both units comprises few meters. More importantly, the contact between the Villar del Arzobispo and Aldea de Corts Fms, previously considered as unconformable, is here interpreted as gradual. The presence of Alveosepta in the Villar del Arzobispo Fm suggests that at least part of this unit is Kimmeridgian, unlike the previously assigned Late Tithonian-Middle Berriasian age. Consequently, the underlying Higueruelas Fm, previously considered Tithonian, should not be younger than Kimmeridgian. Accordingly, sedimentation of the Aldea de Corts Fm, previously considered Valanginian-Hauterivian, probably started during the Tithonian and it may be considered part of the regressive trend of the Late Jurassic-Early Cretaceous cycle. This is consistent with the dinosaur faunas, typically Jurassic, described in the Villar del Arzobispo and Aldea de Corts Fms.

Applied colorimetry is an important module in the program of the elective subject "Colour Science: industrial applications. This course is taught in the Optics and Optometry Degree and it has been used as a testing for the application of new teaching and assessment techniques consistent with the new European Higher Education Area. In particular, the main objective was to reduce the attendance to lessons and encourage the individual and collective work of students. The reason for this approach is based on the idea that students are able to work at their own learning pace. Within this dynamic work, we propose online lab practice based on Excel templates that our research group has developed ad-hoc for different aspects of colorimetry, such as conversion to different colour spaces, calculation of perceptual descriptors (hue, saturation, lightness), calculation of colour differences, colour matching dyes, etc. The practice presented in this paper is focused on the learning of colour differences. The session is based on a specific Excel template to compute the colour differences and to plot different graphs with these colour differences defined at different colour spaces: CIE E, CIE E94 and the CIELAB colour space. This template is implemented on a website what works by addressing the student work at a proper and organized way. The aim was to unify all the student work from a website, therefore the student is able to learn in an autonomous and sequential way and in his own pace. To achieve this purpose, all the tools, links and documents are collected for each different proposed activity to achieve guided specific objectives. In the context of educational innovation, this type of website is normally called WebQuest. The design of a WebQuest is established according to the criteria of usability and simplicity. There are great advantages of using WebQuests versus the toolbox Campus Virtual available in the University of Alicante. The Campus Virtual is an unfriendly environment for this specific purpose as the activities are organized in different sectors depending on whether the activity is a discussion, an activity, a self-assessment or the download of materials. With this separation, it is more difficult that the student follows an organized sequence. However, our WebQuest provides a more intuitive graphical environment, and besides, all the tasks and resources needed to complete them are grouped and organized according to a linear sequence. In this way, the student guided learning is optimized. Furthermore, with this simplification, the student focuses on learning and not to waste resources. Finally, this tool has a wide set of potential applications: online courses of colorimetry applied for postgraduate students, Open Course Ware, etc.

Recently, many efforts have been made in the academic world to adapt the new degrees to the new European Higher Education Area (EHEA). New technologies have been the most important factor to carry out this adaptation. In particular, the tools 2.0 have been spreading quickly, not just the Web 2.0, but even in all the educational levels. Nevertheless, it is now necessary to evaluate whether all these efforts and all the changes, carried out in order to obtain improved academic performance among students, have provided good results. Therefore, the aim of this paper is focused on studying the impact of the implementation of information and communication technologies (ICTs) in a subject belonging to a Master from the University of Alicante in the academic year (2010-2011). In special, it is an elective course called "Advanced Visual Ergonomics" from the Master of Clinical Optometry and Vision. The methodology used to teach this course differs from the traditional one in many respects. For example, one of the resources used for the development of this course is a blog developed specifically to coordinate a series of virtual works, whose purpose is that the student goes into specific aspects of the current topic. Next, the student participates in an active role by writing a personal assessment on the blog. However, in the course planning, there is an attendance to lessons, where the teacher presents certain issues in a more traditional way, that is, with a lecture supported with audiovisual materials, such as materials generated in powerpoint. To evaluate the quality of the results achieved with this methodology, in this work the personal assessment of the students, who have completed this course during this academic year, are collected. In particular, we want to know their opinion about the used resources, as well as the followed methodology. The tool used to collect this information was a questionnaire. This questionnaire evaluates different aspects of the course: a general opinion, quality of the received information, satisfaction about the followed methodology and the students critical awareness. The design of this questionnaire is very important to get conclusive information about the methodology followed in the course. The questionnaire has to have an adequate number of questions; whether it has many questions, it might be boring for the student who would pay no enough attention. The questions should be well-written, with a clear structure and message, to avoid confusion and an ambiguity. The questions should be objectives, without any suggestion for a desired answer. In addition, the questionnaire should be interesting to encourage the student s interest. In conclusion, this questionnaire developed for this subject provided good information to evaluate whether the methodology was a useful tool to teach "Advanced Visual Ergonomics". Furthermore, the students opinion collected by this questionnaire might be very helpful to improve this didactic resource.

Objetivo. Estimar la reproducibilidad de tres medidas objetivas de desempeo fsico de personas mayores en atencin primaria. Diseo. Estudio descriptivo y prospectivo con observacin directa de la funcin fsica por parte de profesionales de la salud de acuerdo a un protocolo estandarizado. Emplazamiento. Tres centros de atencin primaria de las provincias de Alicante y Valencia. Participantes. Muestra de 66 personas de 70 y ms aos, evaluadas en dos ocasiones por el mismo profesional al objeto de replicar idnticas condiciones del estudio, en un intervalo temporal de dos semanas (mediana de 14 das). Mediciones principales. Se evalu el funcionamiento fsico a travs de tres pruebas objetivas de desempeo: el test de equilibrio, el de velocidad de la marcha, y la capacidad para levantarse y sentarse de una silla. Estas medidas provienen de los estudios E PESE (Established Populations for Epidemiologic Studies of the Elderly). Se ha calculado la fiabilidad test-retest mediante el coeficiente de correlacin intraclase. Resultados. Los coeficientes de correlacin intraclase (CCI) fueron de 0,55 para el test de equilibrio, de 0,69 para el test de levantarse de la silla, y de O, 79 para el de velocidad de la marcha. El valor para la puntuacin total de la batera EPESE fue de 0,80. Conclusiones. La reproducibilidad de estas medidas de desempeo es tan aceptable como las aportadas por la bibliografa de referencia. Estas pruebas de desempeo permiten evaluar con rigor cambios importantes en funcionamiento y salud que se producen con el tiempo.

The adaptation of the Spanish University to the European Higher Education Area (EEES in Spanish) demands the integration of new tools and skills that would make the teaching- learning process easier. This adaptation involves a change in the evaluation methods, which goes from a system where the student was evaluated with a final exam, to a new system where we include a continuous evaluation in which the final exam may represent at most 50% in the vast majority of the Universities. Devising a new and fair continuous evaluation system is not an easy task to do. That would mean a students learning process follow-up by the teachers, and as a consequence an additional workload on existing staff resources. Traditionally, the continuous evaluation is associated with the daily work of the student and a collection of the different marks partly or entirely based on the work they do during the academic year. Now, small groups of students and an attendance control are important aspects to take into account in order to get an adequate assessment of the students. However, most of the university degrees have groups with more than 70 students, and the attendance control is a complicated task to perform, mostly because it consumes significant amounts of staff time. Another problem found is that the attendance control would encourage not-interested students to be present at class, which might cause some troubles to their classmates. After a two year experience in the development of a continuous assessment in Statistics subjects in Social Science degrees, we think that individual and periodical tasks are the best way to assess results. These tasks or examinations must be done in classroom during regular lessons, so we need an efficient system to put together different and personal questions in order to prevent students from cheating. In this paper we provide an efficient and effective way to elaborate random examination papers by using Sweave, a tool that generates data, graphics and statistical calculus from the software R and shows results in PDF documents created by Latex. In this way, we will be able to design an exam template which could be compiled in order to generate as many PDF documents as it is required, and at the same time, solutions are provided to easily correct them.

Mathematics expresses itself everywhere, in almost every facet of life - in nature all around us, and in the technologies in our hands. Mathematics is the language of science and engineering - describing our understanding of all that we observe. In fact, Galileo said that Mathematics is the language with which God has written the universe. Aristotle defined mathematics as "the science of quantity", i.e., the science of the things that can be counted. Now you can think that counting has a vital role in our daily life; just imagine that there were no mathematics at all, how would it be possible for us to count days, months and years? Unfortunately, people usually ignore the connection between mathematics and the daily life. Most of university degrees require mathematics. Students who choose not to take seriously mathematics or to ignore it in high school, find several difficulties when they come up against them at the university. This study explores the perceptions of how mathematics influences our daily life among our students and how teachers can use this information in order to improve the academic performance. The used research instrument was a questionnaire that was designed to identify their understanding on learning mathematics.
